00:01 Welcome back to the Ultimate Prescription.
00:02 I'm your host Nick Evenson.
00:04 And on today's program,
00:05 we're talking with Danny Shelton
00:07 about his experience with bypass surgery.
00:08 And, Dr. Marcum,
00:09 tell us a little bit about your thoughts on
00:12 how Danny's experience has been.
00:14 Is this common?
00:15 No, it's not.
00:17 A couple of things are uncommon,
00:18 but beneficial.
00:20 One is that most people aren't as active
00:23 as quick as Danny has and I tribute that
00:27 he was in such good shape going into the surgery.
00:31 So that's one thing,
00:33 two, yes, most people have more side effects
00:36 on the medicines than even he does.
00:38 And I would suggest that if you don't feel right,
00:40 don't ignore it.
00:42 You know, and the faith that Danny has,
00:45 that helped him heal
00:48 much quicker than most people do.
00:50 I've noticed that people that have faith,
00:53 not all of them get better quicker,
00:55 but sometimes it can definitely help people get better
00:58 because as we talked, you know, we all have genetics
01:00 and how they respond is so different.
01:03 So what happened to you is not,
01:05 could have necessarily representative everybody, okay?
01:09 But we've talked about some of the complications,
01:11 some of the feelings,
01:13 we've talked about the medications,
01:14 how we made the diagnosis, the place for modern medicine.
01:18 But now, I really want to talk just a few minutes,
01:21 just a couple of specific things that only Danny knows, okay?
01:26 One is, you know,
01:28 how has your experience your walk with God changed?
01:33 And two, how does it affect your approach to serving God?
01:38 Or has it?
01:40 Actually, it has, it's just made me more aware
01:43 because all of us can get in a rut no matter what we do.
01:46 And so time to time, from time to time,
01:48 it's good to have a wake-up call.
01:50 Right.
01:51 And so I look at this as a wake-up call.
01:53 That is I mentioned earlier, every day is a gift.
01:57 And I realize now there's a good chance
02:00 I may not be here till the Lord comes
02:02 not that He may be so long, but I may be gone tomorrow.
02:05 Right. This can happen to you.
02:07 Something else could happen.
02:08 But every day, you say, "Okay, Lord,
02:11 how can You use me today?"
02:13 Because I realize I'm here to be a witness.
02:15 He said, "Go ye into all the world."
02:18 He didn't just say go Mark Finley
02:19 or Doug Batchelor, He said, "Go ye."
02:21 So when I'm in church service I ask people,
02:23 how many ye's are here?
02:25 Let me see your hands?
02:26 So I say unless you don't have one,
02:27 it should be raised up.
02:29 So we don't put that responsibility on someone else.
02:31 But here's what I found out, Dr. Marcum,
02:34 when I'm concerned about others,
02:36 see, God knew this in His infinite wisdom,
02:39 when He said, "Go ye into all the world."
02:40 Now does He really need me
02:41 and you to bring people to Christ?
02:44 Not at all. Why did He do it? No.
02:46 He did it for our own salvation because when I'm loving,
02:51 worrying about witnessing to you,
02:53 I'm not worried about me, myself and I.
02:56 So when I'm not worried about me, myself and I,
02:58 there's, I'm certainly relax,
03:00 I'm at peace because I'm worried about others.
03:02 I'm involved in their life
03:05 mentally, physically, spiritually.
03:07 And it's such a healer to be able to do that.
03:09 So I love...
03:11 I talked to people on planes everywhere we go.
03:14 My wife says, "My folks just tell me,
03:16 that boy never meets a stranger."
03:17 You know, I enjoy people. I enjoy talking.
03:20 And so to me witnessing to the Lord is for our benefit.
03:25 It's the best thing we could ever do.
03:27 You can't say people say,
03:28 "Well, I just don't have the gift of gab.
03:30 I can't talk." I say, "Really?"
03:32 I was at some folk's home, they had beautiful home.
03:35 They said, "Well, you can talk but we can't do that.
03:38 I said, "Really?"
03:39 I said, "You have beautiful home."
03:41 Thank you.
03:42 I said, "Who purchased it for you?"
03:43 Oh, we did? I said, "How'd you?"
03:45 Oh yeah, we talked to realtor
03:47 and they wanted this and we got him down.
03:49 I said sound like you talk pretty good to me.
03:51 Yeah. There you go.
03:52 So you were able to negotiate when you wanted to
03:55 be able to talk I said, "You bought your own car.
03:57 So you dealt with the people. " Yeah. I said, "Okay."
04:00 Go ye into all the world.
04:01 So people do what my dad used to say,
04:04 "People do what they wanna do."
04:05 My encouragement is to when this happens,
04:09 whatever happens in our life,
04:10 when we look outside instead of itself,
04:13 and look outside, we'll find a peace the Lord knew,
04:17 go ye into all the world.
04:18 He's willing to use us.
04:20 He flows through us to be a blessing.
04:22 He says, "If I be lifted up
04:24 from this earth will draw all men unto me."
04:27 So when we do that, your perspective on life,
04:30 it's you don't have to worry about getting depressed,
04:32 or get down and out 'cause you say,
04:34 no matter what the devil throws at me,
04:36 I'm still, God still loves me.
04:38 He's a mansion with my name on it,
04:40 your name on it in heaven already prepared.
04:43 It's a free gift, salvation.
04:45 All we have to do is accept it. Yeah.
04:47 Then go and tell what He's done for us.
04:49 Well, that's wonderful because
04:50 that's what we like to focus on.
04:52 And I wanna talk a little bit about that is,
04:54 you know, you are living a healthy lifestyle, okay?
04:58 You had God in your life.
05:00 And yet you had these bad things happen.
05:02 God knows why, of course,
05:04 but how do you feel now?
05:08 Now the way exercising doing things,
05:10 but the way you feel like
05:12 two months before bypass surgery,
05:13 have you felt different?
05:15 And, you know, and the reason I'm asking as everyone says,
05:19 "Well, some people are reluctant to use
05:21 modern medicine, modern technology,
05:23 they see that as a weakness.
05:26 You know, they see that as weakness.
05:27 But I tell people,
05:28 there's a place for modern technology in keeping us going.
05:32 So God can use us more, replacing parts,
05:35 dealing with emergencies.
05:36 There's a place for that.
05:38 So do you feel better after all this has happened?
05:40 Absolutely.
05:42 I had a doctor on once I was interviewing
05:44 an orthopedic surgeon.
05:46 She said, "There is no need for doctors anymore.
05:50 I used to think so. I am a doctor.
05:52 I quit my practice.
05:54 That, you know, it's, you just trust the Lord."
05:56 And, you know, doctors, there's you know, it's,
05:59 I couldn't believe I'm interviewing this person.
06:02 And it's on television, right?
06:04 And I'm thinking she's gonna give us some good news.
06:06 So I said to her, "So you don't see any reason."
06:08 And she was dealing with cancer and stuff.
06:10 Saying, "No, you don't need a doctor."
06:12 And I said, "Well, let's say that you leave here right now
06:15 and you go outside in your car and you get in an accident
06:17 and your arm gets cut off, which you used to do surgery
06:20 and it's laying in a ditch, do you not need a doctor."
06:24 I mean, I think you'd want somebody to come and fix it
06:26 'cause I don't think if you're vegetarian eating
06:29 and your life, healthy lifestyle
06:30 is gonna get that arm to come back and grow back on.
06:33 We have to be balanced.
06:34 The devil doesn't care which side of the boat
06:36 we fall out as just long as we fall out.
06:38 Right. So the balancing.
06:39 Do I feel better? Absolutely, I feel better.
06:41 And I'm working, you know, I'm here at 3ABN,
06:44 weekends we're traveling a lot.
06:46 I know I should slow down some,
06:47 but I'm also helping build a house.
06:50 You know, and I love that being outside
06:52 and that's therapeutic for me
06:53 outside in the summer and this fall,
06:56 been able to do a lot of work and I'm just enjoying it.
06:58 And I praise God for every minute.
07:00 That's great, well, you know, we've talked so much
07:02 about in each individual,
07:05 there's no black or white genetically
07:07 'cause we're all so different.
07:09 And God heals us different ways that might be outside.
07:11 And we talked about, you know,
07:13 how things have changed over time,
07:15 the technology and bypass has improved so much
07:18 than it was 30 years ago.
07:20 In fact, if your dad was here today,
07:23 things might have been different.
07:24 But God chose to heal him differently.
07:26 Yeah. There you go.
07:28 And lifestyle things, you know, we focus on so many things,
07:31 but nowadays, we're having a shift
07:33 where we've talked a lot about exercise and food,
07:36 but now it's getting more towards mental health,
07:39 you know, 'cause we know when the brain doesn't work well.
07:42 When it doesn't do well,
07:43 it again causes our body to age when it ages enough,
07:46 we have a symptom,
07:48 we have a symptom then modern medicine can help.
07:50 So there are so many variables and I think you've given
07:53 some great insights in the variables.
07:55 Now if a gentleman has had bypass surgery,
07:58 I think you've stressed
07:59 the importance of relationships and exercise.
08:02 Are you still able to be physical
08:04 and do your exercise every day and stick with that plan?
08:08 Absolutely.
08:10 Just like I did before, like I said,
08:11 "I've never had a chest pain and fortunate to this day."
08:15 But everything that I did before
08:18 I'm still able to do and I climb up down the ladder
08:20 sometime 50 times a day on top of roof
08:23 and when I'm carrying stuff and carrying plywood up
08:25 and setting trusses,
08:27 I did a whole garage trusses by myself,
08:29 24 feet trusses, put them up, not bragging,
08:31 just saying those are things I used to do.
08:33 So my wife says,
08:34 "I think you think you're a whole lot younger now
08:37 since that surgery,
08:38 you seem to be doing so much more stuff."
08:40 And I said, "Well, I just didn't have the opportunity
08:42 this house coming getting outside."
08:44 But now I feel great.
08:46 I would encourage somebody to do what,
08:49 you know, you're here to tell us
08:51 and I appreciate your program.
08:52 I wanna say that so much for what you do
08:55 for the cause of God,
08:57 but you're so balanced because you're bringing in,
08:59 look there is room for medicine,
09:02 sometimes we need it in order to stay alive and to do things.
09:05 God has given man that knowledge.
09:08 And so, on the other hand
09:10 you bring us right back to the Ultimate Prescription
09:13 which is the Lord Jesus Christ
09:14 and so thank you so much for what you do, Dr. Marcum.
09:17 I'm so thrilled that you work with 3ABN
09:19 and have for so long on this and we pray you continue,
09:22 Nick, to do this type of programs
09:25 that encourage and strengthen people.
09:27 Well, I wanna, you know, most people after bypass,
09:30 they can go in your direction, okay?
09:33 But some people also go the other direction
09:35 of lot of fear and anxiety every little thing.
09:37 They quit living. No, we don't do that.
09:39 You know, they live, "Oh, something's gonna happen.
09:42 You know, something's gonna happen."
09:43 And, but I think you brought out a great
09:46 biblical prescription that in all things give thanks.
09:50 Just giving thanks and I've noticed
09:52 that people after bypass
09:53 after I've had a health problem,
09:55 I'm more thankful. Yeah.
09:57 Thankful for the trial. Oh, yeah.
09:58 Thankful for God.
10:00 Thankful for today,
10:01 thankful for the ability to serve.
10:02 And in that thanks itself, you know, ask, you know,
10:06 when we come in for God, what's He ask us?
10:07 He doesn't ask us for supplications first
10:09 He says, you know,
10:11 thanks and praise for us, you know,
10:13 and just that can sometimes help bring us to higher.
10:16 Because it benefits us. Yeah.
10:17 He doesn't, He's not narcissistic
10:19 needs all this praise.
10:21 He knows that when we praise Him,
10:22 it's healing for us.
10:24 Praise and thanks.
10:25 And that just gives us
10:27 back to these words in the Bible.
10:28 You know, our last, all times
10:31 and it gives us hope today and for tomorrow.
10:33 Nick? Yeah.
10:34 I'm just reminded that God doesn't want us to live in fear
10:36 but to live the life more abundant by praising
10:38 and enjoying your relationship with Him.
10:40 And Dr. Marcum, biblical prescriptions is part of that.
10:43 Let's share today's biblical prescription.
10:45 What I try to do is I try to look in scripture
10:49 for biblical prescriptions
10:51 that have evidence-based medicine
10:53 that changes us.
10:54 So I look for the evidence and then teach people
10:56 how to apply it to life.
10:58 It doesn't necessarily treat things that are,
11:01 you know what, you know emergencies
11:03 and things that wear out,
11:05 but it helps maybe slow
11:06 the process down but it gives us,
11:07 points us back to the hope we have in eternity.
11:10 So today, I'd like to share James 1:5.
11:14 And this is something I try to do as a cardiologist.
11:17 And I wanna encourage all of our
11:19 viewers out there to do this.
11:20 Well, James 1:5, "If any of you lack wisdom."
11:25 I lack wisdom on a daily basis.
11:27 The more I learned,
11:29 the less I know and more humble I become,
11:32 "Let him ask of God,
11:34 who gives to all liberally and without reproach,
11:38 and it will be given another gift to him."
11:42 So God is full of gifts
11:44 to those that are humble enough to admit
11:46 that I lack wisdom.
11:47 Okay.
11:49 So, you know, I look at my life and, you know,
11:52 as in service and all of us look at our life and,
11:54 you know, what does God say is a biblical prescription.
11:57 If you lack wisdom, ask me.
11:59 That's a biblical prescription
12:01 'cause when you know where to go for help,
12:03 that again turns down your stress,
12:06 your anxiety, it teaches you,
12:08 you know, God, I need wisdom on this situation,
12:11 you know, how should I handle this?
12:13 Teach me your way.
12:14 So I think that's a wonderful biblical prescription
12:17 that we can have in all the...
12:19 If any of you lack wisdom,
12:20 and I think everyone lacks wisdom every now and then.
12:22 Except, Nick, you lack wisdom? Every single day.
12:26 And I think the more life goes on,
12:28 the more I realized, you know,
12:29 there's so much we do not know about the earth,
12:32 about God, about even our spirituality
12:35 every day that I walk with God,
12:37 I learned something new and I'm humbled.
12:40 You know, I realized that I have bad genes.
12:42 I need a savior. There you go.
12:44 Constantly, I need a savior for everything.
12:47 So I need wisdom to help in life.
12:49 So I think that's a great biblical prescription, Nick.
12:51 Well, we've got to wrap it up here.
12:53 But, Danny, thank you so much for sharing with us
12:54 again today on the Ultimate Prescription.
12:56 And, viewers, if you'd like more information

13:07 a 10-minute Bible study every day,

13:11 and help you discover healing through God's Word.
13:14 Dr. Marcum will be with us in just a moment
13:16 to close the program with prayer.
13:24 We've heard a wonderful testimony today.
13:27 And God uses each of our testimony
13:29 to help uplift the body of Christ
13:32 'cause we're all here to serve each other
13:34 that leads us to the chemistry of love.
13:37 We'd like to have a prayer with you right now
13:39 that God comes into your heart in a special way.
13:42 So we bow our heads.
13:45 Father, God, as the Holy Spirit infuses us,
13:48 we wanna thank You for using us
13:50 in whatever way even using us in illness
13:53 to glorify Your name.
13:55 We wanna thank You for the promise of healing
13:57 as long as we walk with You.
14:00 Now go with us this day.
14:01 Stay close to us is our prayer. Amen.
14:06 If any of you might have questions
14:08 that we can help you with,
14:10 I encourage you to go to our website
14:11 at HeartWiseMinistries.org.
