00:01 The following program presents principles designed
00:03 to promote good health
00:04 and is not intended to take the place
00:06 of personalized professional care.
00:08 The opinions and ideas expressed
00:09 are those of the speaker.
00:11 Viewers are encouraged to draw their own conclusions
00:13 about the information presented.
00:16 Despite knowing the best health practices
00:18 and employing them in our lives,
00:20 sometimes facing cardiovascular disease
00:22 is unavoidable.
00:23 Today we'll hear from Bobby Davis
00:25 on how our trials can sometimes be a blessing.
00:28 Thanks for joining us today on the Ultimate Prescription.
00:50 Thank you for joining us today.
00:52 I'm Nick Evenson, your host
00:53 and we have a special edition
00:55 of the Ultimate Prescription for you today.
00:57 And we have Dr. James Marcum,
00:58 speaker and director of Heartwise Ministries,
01:01 and special guest, Bobby Davis
01:03 of Three Angels Broadcasting Network.
01:04 Bobby, welcome to the program.
01:05 Thank you so much.
01:07 And just tell us a little bit about what's your role here?
01:09 Well, I work as a producer for the 3ABN Today program.
01:13 I'm also the editor for 3ABN World Magazine.
01:17 And I do some voiceover work
01:19 for the radio network and also some video editing.
01:23 So I wear a lot of hats, including my cowboy hat.
01:25 So you may be behind the scenes
01:27 a little bit more than in front of the camera,
01:28 but everyone certainly appreciate
01:30 what you do here at 3ABN.
01:32 Thank you so much.
01:33 And, Dr. Marcum,
01:35 if you're a new viewer here with the program,
01:36 Dr. Marcum, you're a practicing physician
01:37 with the Chattanooga Heart Institute.
01:39 Yeah, I'm a cardiologist
01:40 with the Chattanooga Heart Institute.
01:42 And at one time I was one of the younger ones
01:44 but as the years go,
01:46 I am one of the older cardiologists now
01:47 so I do a lot of hiring and firing the young gentlemen.
01:52 And what I really have learned through the years
01:54 is my specialist in disease reversal.
01:57 So I work with people and teach them
01:59 how to reverse disease.
02:00 But I also like to think that I point them
02:02 to the ultimate physician
02:04 who's the healer of all disease.
02:05 Amen. Yeah.
02:07 Now, Bobby, you've got a story
02:09 that we want to share with our viewers today
02:11 and, Dr. Marcum, you can provide
02:12 some interesting insights as a cardiologist.
02:14 And so let's...
02:15 Where does the story start?
02:17 How do we start to tell about this?
02:18 Well, I woke up on a Friday morning
02:21 with the pain in my shoulder up here on top of my shoulder
02:24 and one in the middle of my back.
02:27 My guess is it probably ended up being
02:29 pericarditis at the time,
02:31 because I developed that a few days later,
02:33 but also had a tiny little bit of tightness in my chest,
02:39 I would say it was 1.5 on a scale of 10.
02:42 And that tightness did not go away.
02:45 And so by the second day, I was like,
02:47 maybe I need to check this out.
02:49 Yeah.
02:50 So we talked in earlier programs
02:52 about prolonged symptoms
02:53 above the waist needs to be checked.
02:56 Now I have a curious question before the week or two before,
03:00 did you notice that you weren't feeling good
03:01 when you were doing things
03:03 or when you were exerting yourself?
03:04 Did you have any problems with walking and doing things?
03:07 I was a little busy.
03:09 Okay, so that could have been a symptom of a chronic disease.
03:12 But as we talked about sometimes
03:13 a disease doesn't even show up
03:15 till you have a pain that won't go away,
03:17 a heart attack situation or unstable coronary.
03:20 Yes.
03:22 I didn't feel much pain besides the knots in my shoulder.
03:25 So you sort of ignored it at first, didn't you?
03:26 I did.
03:27 Oh, it's not me, nothing's wrong with me.
03:29 I hear that all the time.
03:30 But not for very long.
03:32 And by the next day,
03:33 I decided I needed to check it out.
03:36 And actually, it was Sunday morning.
03:39 And I thought, "Man, I just need to check out
03:41 this tightness in my chest."
03:43 So you went to the emergency room?
03:44 I did.
03:46 And what did they do there?
03:47 Immediately they put me in, I mean,
03:48 I went right into the medical room.
03:50 There you go.
03:52 They did blood tests.
03:53 My tests of my heart seemed to be okay,
03:57 but as soon as the result came back
04:00 my troponin enzyme levels were up
04:03 and they said you've had a heart attack.
04:05 And the next thing I know,
04:06 I'm being bundled up
04:07 and pushed into an ambulance and off to the nearest
04:11 cardiac catheterization lab in Carbondale.
04:14 And that was quite an experience.
04:18 How were you feeling inside when all this was going on?
04:21 You know, curiously, I was more or less at peace,
04:24 but in the ambulance
04:26 that the driver and the attendant
04:28 both sat in the front
04:29 and I was by myself in the back.
04:31 And for about the 15 minute ride,
04:33 I realized all at once, you know,
04:37 this may be the last day of my life,
04:39 I need to make some things right with my maker.
04:42 And I did, I said a prayer and I asked God
04:45 to reveal to me anything that stood in the way
04:48 of my relationship with Him.
04:50 And several things came up,
04:52 I confess those sins and made peace with God
04:56 and then one more thing came up and it was a resentment
04:59 that I had with somebody and I wasn't letting go of it.
05:04 It wasn't anything that was done to me.
05:05 But I was holding on to this resentment.
05:07 And I realized, that's my fault,
05:11 you know, when I refuse to forgive somebody,
05:14 I'm holding something, and that's toxic
05:16 and that keeps me away from God.
05:19 And I made peace with that by asking God
05:22 to give me His forgiveness for that person
05:24 that I would pass it along.
05:26 And at that point,
05:28 something dramatic happened to me,
05:30 and we'll go into it a little later but basically,
05:32 I felt an incredible peace come over me,
05:36 like I've never had in my entire life.
05:39 And that peace continues to this day,
05:42 and we can talk more about it later.
05:43 Well, I think that's pretty remarkable
05:46 'cause most people
05:48 don't have a faith to begin with.
05:50 They don't have that relationship
05:51 to begin with.
05:52 And that's why we want to encourage everyone
05:54 to have that relationship for these tough times in life.
05:56 'Cause, you know, you had that but so many people don't
06:00 and I see them, Nick, Bobby, and they're scared to death.
06:04 And that makes the condition that much worse.
06:06 They're scared.
06:07 You know, they don't have, they don't know where to go,
06:09 what to do.
06:11 You knew what to do so in the ambulance
06:14 you had this experience.
06:16 You get to the catheterization lab.
06:17 What happens after that?
06:19 I've never seen people work so fast in my entire life
06:22 within a few minutes, and I mean,
06:24 maybe two minutes
06:26 they had me completely prepped and ready.
06:28 And the doctor, very kind doctor came in
06:31 and explained the procedure,
06:34 he catherized me through my wrist.
06:37 And I watched the whole procedure
06:41 on the huge television monitor right there
06:44 and learned some things about cardiac cath
06:46 that I didn't know, for one I knew that they inject die,
06:49 but I didn't realize it's tiny little bits of dye.
06:52 I thought they'd fill this up with dye
06:54 and could see everything
06:55 but it's just little burst of dye.
06:58 And I think they must have given me
07:02 something else to sedate me.
07:03 We do, we usually give them medicine
07:04 to sort take the edge off.
07:06 That's right, because what I thought took
07:07 maybe 10 minutes probably took a little longer than that,
07:11 to really look at all the different arteries
07:13 and they found three blocked arteries.
07:17 One completely blocked and the other two,
07:18 just about completely.
07:20 Okay.
07:21 And he came in after the procedure was over
07:24 and held my hand with both his hands and he says
07:27 "Bobby, we found some blockage in your heart.
07:30 I'm afraid we're going to have to do a triple bypass
07:34 on your heart in order to help you."
07:37 And he was incredibly kind, I mean,
07:39 it just really touched my heart
07:41 that this doctor was so personable to me
07:45 and not cold or clinical about it.
07:48 He was very kind.
07:51 And I was again at peace.
07:52 I'm gonna stop the story right there to sort of
07:55 tie in some of the things we talked about.
07:56 So whenever you have a symptom, you can't ignore it, okay.
08:01 And the people that have a relationship with God,
08:03 have that peace or can have that peace
08:06 or should have that peace.
08:08 And that helps the overall medical,
08:09 the bad genetics that we might be experienced.
08:12 So you had lots of blockages,
08:14 they did not get there in a day.
08:16 And I talked to Nick,
08:17 sometimes this blockage is based on their genetics,
08:20 their stress in life,
08:21 they slowly build up over time until they express themselves.
08:26 So and then we talked about the treatment, you know,
08:29 which sometimes we can do stents,
08:31 sometimes we can do medicines,
08:33 but sometimes we do need to go to bypass.
08:36 So now that you're in one place,
08:39 what's the next step after they told you that?
08:42 Now we've given you medicines to stabilize you,
08:44 you sort of realize what's going on.
08:46 So now what's the next step?
08:48 Well, they hospitalized me
08:50 and immediately started heparin,
08:52 which is I guess a blood thinner.
08:54 That is a blood thinner.
08:56 And that's apparently a little tricky
08:57 to get just the right level, not too much, not too little.
09:01 And that took actually several days
09:04 to get me stabilized
09:05 while they were trying to schedule surgery for me.
09:08 Now, I should tell you
09:09 that in the process of all of this,
09:11 I'm single, I don't have a wife or somebody to take care of me.
09:15 And I was terrified at the prospect
09:18 of being by myself at home,
09:21 trying to get through
09:22 the postoperative procedures and, you know,
09:24 how do I get in and out of bed
09:26 and shower and all those things.
09:28 So I was determined if I could to move
09:31 to a different hospital.
09:32 And in fact, they did allow me finally,
09:35 after I prayed about it, they stabilized me,
09:39 they put me on several other drugs
09:41 to keep me that way.
09:43 And they allowed me
09:44 to go to Atlanta where my sister lives.
09:47 By then by God's grace I had already found a doctor,
09:51 a very well known doctor
09:53 in one of the best hospitals in the city,
09:56 and had an appointment with him.
09:58 So I went down there and they warned me
10:00 that if you feel anything,
10:02 you better stop at the nearest ER.
10:04 Right. So you didn't drive yourself, did you?
10:06 No, no, no. Okay.
10:08 My brother-in-law, God love him.
10:09 He drove eight hours up there and eight hours back
10:12 all in the same day to pick me up.
10:14 And you made the trip pretty stressed fine.
10:16 Just fine, just fine.
10:17 And again, was not nervous at all.
10:19 I know that's a typical.
10:20 Yeah.
10:22 And what's interesting is that, remember,
10:23 the disease was there all along,
10:26 and then it triggered and it acted up,
10:28 and then your body couldn't compensate
10:30 so you had a symptom.
10:32 And once they stabilized that symptom, you were fine.
10:34 But you probably, you know,
10:36 if you would have done anything,
10:37 you would have done very well.
10:39 That's why they probably say don't move, don't do anything,
10:41 anything, you recall it, Bob.
10:43 So I got to Atlanta and met with my surgeon,
10:47 and I spent another three days or so in the hospital there
10:51 trying to get me off of plavix,
10:54 which is the drug they had me on
10:56 and they switched me back over to heparin
10:59 and there were other things like the doctor is,
11:03 was in the high demand and there was an emergency
11:06 that came up so my surgery was delayed one more day.
11:10 But all along the way I was treated
11:12 with so much good care that it really impressed me.
11:16 So you move from...
11:17 Did you move...
11:18 Were you staying at your sister's house
11:20 for a while before the...
11:21 And then they scheduled the bypass
11:23 but you weren't doing anything until that?
11:25 No.
11:26 I was taking it easy.
11:28 And do you want me to go through the surgery?
11:31 Well, we are gonna go after we have
11:33 a few more questions here is to let everyone know.
11:36 So before all this happened,
11:38 you weren't taking any medications, were you?
11:41 I was on some medications,
11:43 but I had been really showing bad symptoms
11:46 with the statins that they'd tried on me.
11:49 And in your family did you ever have a history
11:51 of heart disease and anyone in your family?
11:53 My father had high blood pressure
11:56 and high cholesterol for a while
11:58 until he had a very interesting stroke
12:02 that happened in his medulla and all of a sudden
12:05 his blood pressure went down dramatically
12:08 and he didn't have any more problems
12:10 but that was my problem, my heredity so to speak,
12:13 is high blood pressure and I had suffered from that
12:16 for so many years mostly from my lifestyle.
12:19 And I need to add the fact that I'm diabetic also
12:23 Type II diabetic and that I'm sure contributed.
12:26 So you had some stressors on the cardiovascular system.
12:29 Had you ever had any testing on your heart before,
12:31 a stress test or anything like that?
12:34 No testing, so now we've gone, Nick,
12:37 from a person that you felt pretty well the month before
12:40 except maybe a few symptoms now gone
12:42 from having an angiogram, a diagnostic test.
12:46 So when a person is having a symptom,
12:48 now is not I don't like to talk about prevention and reversal.
12:53 Now's the time to treat the symptom
12:55 'cause if you don't treat the symptom
12:57 then you get around to the cause.
12:59 So, Nick, why don't you take us over to break
13:01 and then after break, we'll talk about the surgery.
13:04 Yeah. Well, Bobby, thank you for sharing this with us.
13:06 There's more to come
13:08 but we got to take a quick break.
13:09 So after the break,
13:10 we're gonna learn more about how this whole experience
13:12 has been a real blessing in your life.
13:14 And we'll be back in just a moment.
