00:01 Stay tuned to meet the team behind the scenes
00:03 on Dare to Dream,
00:04 also known as the Dare to Dream dream team.
00:08 My name is Yvonne-Lewis Shelton.
00:10 And I'm Jason Bradley,
00:11 and you're watching Urban Report.
00:39 Hello and welcome to Urban Report.
00:41 Our guests today are no strangers
00:44 to Dare to Dream or 3ABN,
00:46 although you may have never seen them before.
00:49 They are the behind-the-camera team
00:53 who make the programs come together,
00:55 our D to D, Dare to Dream dream team,
00:59 Matthew Andrew and Ricky Carter.
01:02 Yay!
01:04 Thank you, thank you. We're so glad you're...
01:06 And, of course, Jason Bradley.
01:09 I was wondering when you were going to get to that.
01:11 You know I couldn't forget you, J.
01:13 You know I can't forget you.
01:14 You know, people don't really realize
01:17 what goes into these programs that we do.
01:20 You know, people just turn on the television
01:24 or watch on their iPad or on their iPhones
01:27 and they have no idea who's behind the programs,
01:32 what goes into producing these programs.
01:35 And so we brought that to you today
01:37 because we really want you to know these wonderful people
01:41 that have contributed so much to our ministry.
01:46 And so Ricky Carter does our graphics, and animation,
01:51 and all the opens...
01:53 99% of the opens that you see on Dare to Dream,
01:58 Ricky Carter does.
02:00 And we're going to show you some of his work later.
02:02 And then Matthew Andrew is our editor, and he,
02:07 you know, when things are a little out of sync
02:09 or he has to put the names
02:11 under at the bottom of the screen,
02:13 just all that stuff, things that you wouldn't...
02:16 you just kind of take for granted
02:18 because you just don't know what goes into it.
02:21 So we want to, first of all,
02:23 say thank you publicly to both of you
02:26 because what you do is...
02:30 You're our unsung heroes.
02:33 You're never in front of the camera,
02:35 all your work is behind the camera,
02:37 but God has gifted both of you with such wonderful gifts.
02:41 So we just want to acknowledge what you do and say thank you.
02:45 Yeah, thank you.
02:46 And you guys do it with such a positive attitude.
02:48 Yes.
02:49 I mean, we can call you about anything,
02:50 anytime we need something, sometimes it's last minute.
02:54 I know I've reached out to you, Ricky,
02:57 plenty of times
02:59 when there's been some type of change
03:01 or something that was last minute,
03:03 you could be in the car driving,
03:04 you're like, "Okay, hold on,
03:06 let me make a U-turn, my laptop's at the house.
03:07 I'll send it to you. I'll be there in five minutes."
03:11 And I mean, you really go above and beyond.
03:12 And, Matthew, you as well,
03:14 I mean, I can call upstairs to you
03:17 or go upstairs into your office
03:19 and no matter what it is that I need,
03:22 you find a way to make it happen,
03:24 and you do so with such a cheerful heart.
03:27 And I definitely appreciate both of you guys.
03:30 And this is a little bit different for us today because,
03:36 you know, we've switched...
03:38 Well, we didn't switch roles.
03:40 I'm glad you made that clear.
03:43 Well, now I'm the Dare to Dream General Manager.
03:46 He is the General Manager.
03:48 And you are the Dare to Dream Founder/Consultant.
03:50 Right.
03:52 So it's a little bit different now
03:54 because, previously, she was the General Manager.
03:58 Yes, and I want to say in acknowledgement of you, J,
04:02 that I'm just so, as a mom and as your boss,
04:06 I'm so proud of where God has brought you.
04:09 You have grown so much
04:12 in the short time that you've been here,
04:14 but you've been here four years, right?
04:16 Yeah, almost five.
04:17 Almost five years, and to see where God has brought you,
04:22 it's amazing, and so I want to say to you,
04:25 thank you so much for all that you do.
04:27 You have no idea all the stuff,
04:29 all the hats that Jason wears as well,
04:31 and it's a blessing because we can just see that
04:36 God is moving through all of us.
04:41 And He has chosen us to do this work.
04:46 It's really humbling to think that
04:48 God has chosen us to do this work.
04:52 But I want to say congratulations.
04:54 Right. Thank you.
04:55 As the GM. Thank you.
04:57 That's awesome. And you...
05:00 I'm going to talk about you for a second.
05:02 You did an excellent job with...
05:04 I'm not stepping into a situation,
05:06 you know, oftentimes,
05:07 you'll see a politician or something,
05:10 they always complain about their predecessor.
05:12 I've got no complaints.
05:14 You know, my mom/boss did a great job and left me...
05:19 left Dare to Dream in a position
05:21 where I'm stepping into a seat or sitting down in a seat
05:24 that is geared up and ready for success.
05:27 All I have to do is continue to submit to the Lord
05:30 and run it as He guides me.
05:33 So you've done an exceptional job.
05:35 You were here when there was no Dare to Dream,
05:38 and you had these programs and these concepts,
05:41 and you met people,
05:43 and God placed people in your path, and you did...
05:45 He did, He did.
05:47 You've done and continue to do an exceptional job
05:49 with Dare to Dream.
05:50 Well, praise the Lord.
05:52 And I'm so happy that I can still pick your brain.
05:55 What little there is left.
05:56 I told you that, when you turn, like, 90 years old,
05:59 I'm going to pick you up for work.
06:02 And you better be ready, don't make me late.
06:05 Don't make me late.
06:06 Comb those thin strands of hair and let's go.
06:10 You know what, it's too funny.
06:13 And also, I want to acknowledge
06:15 because, you know, people at home are seeing us here,
06:19 but there are so many other people
06:21 that have a role with Dare to Dream.
06:24 We have Brad that's directing this program as we speak.
06:26 Yes.
06:28 We have all of the people that are on camera right now.
06:30 We have the video graphics people, I mean...
06:33 Our floor director Kate.
06:34 Yeah, floor director Kate, and Bree,
06:38 and all these people...
06:39 Justin. Yep, Justin Lee.
06:41 Terrance. Terrance Marshall.
06:44 Too many people to name.
06:45 Yeah 'cause I'm going to forget somebody
06:47 and someone will be mad, so...
06:49 So I mean, there's such a huge administration
06:52 and everybody who has supported,
06:55 and you, you are part of the Dare to Dream team.
06:58 Absolutely.
07:00 You make it possible for these programs to take place.
07:02 You know, without your support...
07:05 We couldn't do it without you. That's right.
07:07 And so we are appreciative of you
07:09 and what you do for this ministry,
07:11 and how you share it with your friends,
07:12 your financial support as well.
07:15 I could go on forever and ever.
07:16 Let's continue with the... Let's get back to it.
07:19 Well, you know, the one thing that we know is that
07:22 God has chosen all of us to do this work.
07:25 He has a work for everyone to do.
07:27 Amen.
07:28 And so this is what we do,
07:32 and I want our viewers to hear your journeys
07:36 because, Matthew, let's start with you.
07:39 Yes.
07:40 Because, Matthew, you have
07:41 a very interesting testimony as far...
07:44 it's very interesting that God would have you working
07:47 with Dare to Dream particularly.
07:49 Yes. Why is that?
07:53 This has been a real journey for me,
07:55 and it was...
07:56 As I'm about to explain something that I probably told
07:58 maybe eight people in the world, I've never...
08:02 others outside of a few of you know this testimony.
08:06 As a young man, I grew up in a good family,
08:09 had a good upbringing, they...
08:11 It was a Christian family,
08:13 and they taught us to love people,
08:14 and be respectful,
08:16 and I grew up, went to high school age,
08:20 and in the city where I went,
08:21 there was people of all races, nationalities,
08:24 and it was a mix like most of America.
08:27 And I didn't really hate anyone,
08:29 got along with everybody, and really had a great time.
08:33 Later on in my life, I migrated...
08:35 I became a paramedic,
08:36 and I became on the fire department,
08:39 and being out, getting sent to the worst situations
08:43 where you meet the worst people
08:45 in their worst times with their worst attitudes
08:49 and see the results of shootings, stabbings...
08:52 And, of course, at the time when I was younger,
08:55 in the '70s, let's start there.
09:01 Let's start there. Let's start there.
09:04 It was a time when there was still racial tension,
09:08 and there was a lot of it,
09:09 and the stuff that was portrayed on TV,
09:11 if you're just growing up,
09:13 that's what you thought the world was like.
09:16 You saw in the news,
09:18 the Black Panthers and these things
09:20 that were a little more in the news, but they didn't...
09:23 I thought that's what all people were like, like that
09:27 'cause that's the picture I saw.
09:29 And having nothing else to really to think about,
09:32 that's what I thought,
09:33 but I got to the point where I hated,
09:35 I hated black people.
09:38 I really did.
09:40 Hate, hate.
09:42 And as I made these runs and saw a black-on-black crime,
09:45 black-on-white crime, white...
09:47 Yes, it was white-on-white crime,
09:48 sure, there's all that stuff out in the real world,
09:51 but I don't know where that came from,
09:55 I really don't 'cause it's not what I learned as a child,
09:57 but somewhere I migrated into that
09:59 Satan will take you if you take your eyes off Him
10:02 to a place you don't want to go.
10:03 Yes. You just don't want to go.
10:06 He will twist your view of the world, of people,
10:10 and I got to the point where I just hated people of color.
10:15 And that's hard to admit, that's hard to say out loud.
10:18 Especially surrounded by black people.
10:23 It's not hard for me today,
10:25 it is more hard for me to say it for me
10:29 than it is for all our viewers.
10:30 Yes.
10:32 Because I don't know where that came from
10:35 and that stayed with me for many years,
10:37 but then I started being led to the Lord leading me back.
10:42 And I won't include that whole journey,
10:43 that's a whole another story, but slowly but surely,
10:46 He led me back to a picture of...
10:49 Look at Jesus, look at Jesus,
10:51 this is the picture of what heaven will be like,
10:54 and what people in heaven will be like.
10:56 And so eventually, I came to the point
10:59 where I got beyond the hatred,
11:01 and it wasn't something that happened
11:03 like a road to Damascus experience,
11:05 it was one of those over time, imperceptible,
11:08 where I woke up one day and said,
11:10 "You know, I don't hate people anymore."
11:14 Did you...
11:15 Was it a situation
11:17 where you didn't know any black people personally
11:19 because I find that, you know, a lot of times
11:21 when there's this misperception on either side,
11:24 you know, black against white or white against black,
11:28 it's because you don't know anybody
11:30 from a different culture?
11:31 You don't know them except superficially.
11:34 Yeah. "Hi, how are you doing?"
11:35 But they're not...
11:36 They're not coming to your house,
11:38 they are not hanging out with you,
11:39 so you don't really know them.
11:40 Was it a situation where
11:42 you got to know someone of color
11:44 and that's how your misperceptions dropped
11:49 or was it just the Lord just lead you out?
11:53 That's a good question.
11:55 And as I think about that, as I think back on that,
11:57 when I was in high school, I had black friends.
12:00 I didn't think of them as black folks or white, they...
12:04 It was... They were my friends.
12:06 And so I don't know where that came from.
12:08 And it's shocking for me to look back and say that
12:11 the devil can take you on their journey.
12:13 Absolutely.
12:14 And you have to watch, you know, guard your heart
12:17 and guard your eyes in what you see
12:19 and don't let perceptions of the world tell you
12:21 what you ought to think and how you ought to be.
12:24 And so somehow I got past all that
12:27 and became a Christian.
12:29 I'm a Seventh-day Adventist Christian now, and we...
12:32 Some years ago, Phyllis and I came to 3ABN, and we just,
12:37 as many people who come here to begin their journey,
12:41 working for the Lord,
12:43 they put you someplace but you get migrated
12:45 and shifted around until you find your niche.
12:47 Right.
12:48 Many of us have done many different jobs
12:50 since we've been here.
12:51 I started out in marketing, have done many other things,
12:54 but I don't want to get too far off the course here.
12:56 The thing is that,
12:58 one day, I was in the pastoral department
13:00 working on the prayer line
13:03 and our former General Manager Mollie Steenson said,
13:07 "You know, we'd like to talk to you."
13:08 So I went down and she said,
13:10 "We think you have the makings to be an editor."
13:12 And I thought,
13:14 "This woman needs psychiatric help.
13:18 There's no way in the world.
13:19 She's obviously not hearing from the Lord."
13:21 But she was and...
13:23 But I loved working with computers.
13:25 I just love it. It just fascinated me.
13:28 And they're going to let me work on a Mac computer.
13:30 I said, "Well, now I have to do something."
13:33 So I said, "Okay."
13:36 And I got into that, and that was very interesting.
13:39 And they just said, "Learn editing."
13:42 That's all I knew about it, and I said, "Okay."
13:44 So some of the people started teaching me,
13:45 and then I realized one day they said,
13:47 "And you're going to do the editing
13:49 for the Dare to Dream network."
13:55 That's great. It is.
13:57 I can do that, you know,
13:58 but this has been a journey for me
14:01 because as I've been editing these programs,
14:05 I've been seeing fantastic people of color.
14:08 Amen. Praise the Lord.
14:10 Who are doctors, and lawyers, and brilliant people,
14:14 and business people, and educators,
14:16 who are out there making incredible,
14:19 incredible contributions to their communities
14:22 that are turning and encouraging young people.
14:26 And I've seen black young people come on and I've seen...
14:29 Look at these wonderful things young people are doing.
14:32 And I realized there's a part of the journey
14:35 that's deceptive.
14:37 It's not enough to say, "I hate and now I don't,"
14:41 because if we're going to be in heaven,
14:43 Jesus says, "You must love one another."
14:45 Now that's a different ballgame.
14:47 Right.
14:49 So you have to get past hate to not hating,
14:52 but that's the beginning
14:54 'cause now I have to learn to love.
14:55 That's right. I have to learn to love.
14:57 I've got to go all the way.
14:59 Just getting to I don't hate is just neutral.
15:02 We got to go the whole distance,
15:04 the whole distance.
15:05 Where have I heard that before? Right.
15:07 Okay. Yeah.
15:08 So I just started watching this,
15:09 and I was so fascinated, and I found out,
15:11 "Yes, you're going to be on Dare to Dream
15:14 and Yvonne Lewis is going to be your boss."
15:17 And I said, "Well, that's pretty cool."
15:23 Because the Lord tests us.
15:26 He tests us. "Do you really love Me?
15:29 You know, you say you don't hate,
15:31 but are you willing to build relationships?"
15:34 Right. Right.
15:35 "Can you build relationships?" So I said, "I can do this."
15:38 And then after just sitting down,
15:39 I wasn't long talking to you,
15:41 I said, "Oh, yeah, I'm in a good place."
15:43 Praise the Lord.
15:45 And so now I went from hating black people
15:48 to being on the Urban Network.
15:52 Right. God has a sense of humor.
15:55 I really think He does.
15:57 And He gave me a black female boss,
16:01 and I was having some health challenges.
16:04 And I said, "Okay, Lord, I really feel like
16:06 I'm making progress, but I need another doctor."
16:10 My doctor made a recommendation,
16:12 see this neurologist I want to set you up with,
16:14 so I went to the neurologist, I'd never seen her,
16:16 didn't know her, I see her name is...
16:19 Oh, it's a female, Tiffany.
16:21 Okay, and I won't go any further than that
16:23 'cause we're not doing that.
16:24 But anyway, I went to her and found out that,
16:28 as I walked in, God has a sense of humor,
16:30 she was a young, female black doctor.
16:35 And I said, "I got the picture."
16:37 Yeah.
16:39 And so, and I love her, and I love you folks,
16:41 and you're all my family, and so it's not enough.
16:44 Yes. That's my journey.
16:45 My testimony is just not enough to not hate, you have to love.
16:48 Amen, amen.
16:50 That is a powerful testimony.
16:52 And like you, I believe that God does have a sense of humor.
16:56 He does, yeah. And that story proves it.
16:59 Ricky, we want to talk about you as well
17:01 and go into your journey.
17:03 But before we do, we actually have a roll compiled of
17:08 your work and Matthew's work.
17:10 You put together the opening graphics
17:13 and you edit the program,
17:15 so I want to take a look at that.
17:17 All right.
17:51 And so we have this double emphasis on
17:54 Christ being called up to God unto His throne,
17:56 which is what happens as He's resurrected
17:59 and begins His mediation, His intercessory work there.
18:02 Each one of these epochs and each one of these
18:04 churches, seals, trumpets, and salvation signs
18:06 begins in the Apostolic age,
18:08 begins at this holy place, simultaneous ministry,
18:12 and shows us the churches, seals, and trumpets
18:14 are all cycles of seven,
18:16 that parallel, that run down together
18:19 at the same time, happens simultaneously.
18:21 So we couldn't say that the seven churches occur here
18:24 but then the seven seals occur after the seven churches.
18:28 Or the seven trumpets occur after this...
18:31 No, they unfold simultaneously.
18:35 You know, when you're working the dream,
18:38 the struggle is oh-so real.
18:42 You have to be determined.
18:44 You have to work hard.
18:48 And be compassionate.
18:50 Set goals.
18:52 And be timely.
18:54 Stay focused. And reach high.
18:57 You need all these and the Lord to come together
19:00 to make you a better person
19:02 while you're working the dream.
19:07 You actually even met.
19:09 Them pastors be making some big dollar bills, y'all.
19:13 Selling snake oil, prayer cloths,
19:16 splinters from the tree of life and all that stuff,
19:18 so if I can't make it in the real world,
19:20 I'mma make some money as a pastor,
19:21 that's what I'm trying to say.
19:23 I understand, I understand. Don't you worry about it.
19:25 What makes you think you're a good fit
19:27 for this particular position?
19:28 Man, I got the experience, I got the education,
19:31 plus I bring some swagger,
19:33 you know, nobody in this company so far
19:35 that I've seen got swag in.
19:37 This company needs some swagger,
19:38 that what G-stack brings to the table.
19:40 We do have swagger.
20:20 Girl, I thought, I told you to get this mess cleaned up.
20:23 You sure did tell her, Mom.
20:25 She never does anything you tell her to do.
20:27 I already cleaned up this room.
20:29 Who are you talking to like that?
20:30 I said get this mess cleaned up!
20:33 First of all, I need you to get out of my face
20:36 and stay out of my face.
20:38 I already cleaned this room up yesterday.
20:40 Oh, no! Oh, no! Oh, no!
20:44 You have me confused with somebody else.
20:47 Who do you think you're talking to?
20:48 If you don't get this mess cleaned up,
20:50 we're going to be planning a funeral in here today.
20:56 And it shall come to pass
20:59 That before they call
21:01 I will answer
21:03 Yes, I will answer.
21:06 And while they are yet speaking
21:11 I will hear Yes, I will hear.
21:16 Isaiah 65:24 says this
21:21 Isaiah 65:24
21:25 And it shall come to pass
21:27 That before they call
21:30 I will answer Yes, I will answer
21:34 And while they are yet speaking
21:39 I will hear Yes, I will hear
21:44 Isaiah 65:24 says this
21:49 Isaiah 65:24
22:34 That is such a powerful demonstration of the gifts
22:38 that God has given to both of you,
22:40 and, again, we just thank you.
22:42 We thank you so much for bringing them here
22:45 to Dare to Dream and 3ABN.
22:47 Ricky, tell us about your journey?
22:50 How did you get to Dare to Dream too?
22:53 You know, I worked for Country Music Television
22:56 for a good little while and after working...
22:58 Well, while working with them, near the end of my time there,
23:02 the Lord was impressing on me,
23:03 "How can you promote 40 greatest drinking songs?
23:06 How can you promote Coyote Ugly,
23:10 women that are half-dressed?
23:11 How could you do that and still represent Me?"
23:14 And that really worked on my heart, and I said,
23:16 "Lord, if you can get me out of here,
23:19 then I will serve You,
23:20 I will dedicate the talent that You've given me,
23:24 I'll dedicate it to You."
23:25 And the Lord made a way so I could work for myself,
23:29 worked for myself for a few years, went to Michigan,
23:31 worked for one of my clients there,
23:33 then went back to working for myself,
23:36 where most of my clients...
23:37 I'd say 98% of my clients are not just Christian clients now
23:41 but they're Adventists.
23:43 Wow.
23:44 And so I remember
23:46 when Dare to Dream was starting, and I was like,
23:49 "Boy, I would love to work for that channel."
23:51 And I just called and asked for you,
23:55 but you weren't there, so I left a message,
23:57 "Dr. Lewis, this is Ricky Carter,
23:59 I'm a designer animator,
24:00 would you be interested in having
24:02 any volunteer graphic work done for any of our programs?"
24:06 You called me back a few days later,
24:08 and we talked, things worked well,
24:10 and gave me the first project,
24:12 and I remember that first project,
24:13 it was Take it to the Bank.
24:15 And that was a fun project to work on.
24:18 And with that project,
24:20 not only doing the graphics for it,
24:22 designing the logo,
24:23 but being able to come up with the music
24:26 and then doing the voiceover.
24:27 Yes.
24:29 But yeah, the Lord just opened up a way for me
24:31 to use my talents to work for Him, it reminds me of...
24:36 There's an artist in the Bible, I think his name is Aholiab,
24:40 and he was one of those artists that worked on designing
24:45 all the artwork in the temple,
24:48 and I was like, "Man, if he could do that,
24:51 I know I could do something for the Lord as well."
24:53 Wow, wow. That's beautiful.
24:55 You know, when you called me about volunteering,
24:58 I thought that's such a great thing.
25:01 That was such a great way to get your foot in the door
25:03 because he wasn't asking for anything,
25:05 he was volunteering his time and his talent,
25:08 and then when I saw how talented you were,
25:10 I was like, "Oh, wow, now can you do this?
25:12 Can you do that?"
25:14 And then you actually helped to give Dare to Dream its identity
25:17 as far as, you know, like the logo and the...
25:23 The Sabbath, the happy Sabbath,
25:25 you know, that whole animation thing.
25:28 So again, that's...
25:30 God brought the two of you, the two of you to us.
25:32 Absolutely.
25:33 What would you say to
25:36 those who have talent like you, who mightwant to...
25:39 both of you, who might want to do something for the Lord,
25:42 but they're hesitant?
25:44 What would you say?
25:45 You have about 30 seconds, both of you, to say it.
25:49 The simple answer is don't hesitate.
25:51 If you feel God is leading you
25:54 by the power of the Holy Spirit,
25:56 don't stop, go forward,
25:57 He will never lead you in a place
25:58 where He's not willing to supply every need.
26:00 Amen. Amen.
26:01 I would say,
26:03 trust in the Lord with all your heart,
26:05 lean not on to your own understanding.
26:07 In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct thy
26:09 paths.
26:11 Yes. Amen.
26:13 That is the key to trust in God and to know
26:16 that He is going to have you...
26:19 He's going to take you,
26:20 the steps of a righteous man are ordered by the Lord.
26:22 He's going to take you to where you need to go,
26:25 if you just trust in Him.
26:26 Do you have any closing thoughts, J?
26:28 Yeah, I just think it's amazing and interesting that
26:33 even while you were volunteering,
26:35 you put forth your best work.
26:37 Right.
26:38 You know, you always give your best,
26:39 never anything less, no matter what.
26:42 I don't care if you're sweeping the floor,
26:44 I don't care, whatever is going on,
26:46 you always give your best,
26:47 and I believe that with both of you,
26:51 you guys always put forth your best work.
26:53 They do. I definitely appreciate that.
26:55 They do.
26:56 And we want you to know that,
26:58 again, we always say this,
26:59 that God has a plan for your life
27:01 and if you look at,
27:03 you know, where God brought Matthew from,
27:06 you know, a place of animosity toward minorities
27:10 and now he's working with a minority network,
27:12 I mean, it really is funny.
27:13 And then...
27:15 And loving it because God is love,
27:17 and you have sought God,
27:19 and God's Spirit is working through you.
27:21 And then Ricky came on as a volunteer
27:24 and then began to do all of our work basically,
27:28 and work for the parent network as well.
27:31 So we just want to, again, thank you and acknowledge you.
27:34 Thank you, J, for all that you're doing.
27:38 And again, I'm just so proud and thankful
27:40 for the work that you're doing.
27:42 And expect great things coming from J as the General Manager
27:46 because he's got some great ideas
27:49 as to what he wants to do
27:51 and where he wants to take the network
27:53 by the grace of God.
27:55 Thank you for being with us.
27:57 Join us next time because, you know what,
27:59 it just wouldn't be the same without you.
