00:12 Sermon #B697 - Put Some Respect On His Name
00:20 Dr. Byrd: Thank you for joining us and worship today. God is going to do a great thing through His word.
00:26 I have been praying all week long basking in the word of God praying. And I know that God is going to do something special today.
00:32 May God's name be glorified.
00:34 May His people be edified. And today may the devil be horrified on what God is going to do through his word today.
00:42 And so the message-- we've title for this day is Put Some Respect on His Name. That is right. Put some respect on His name.
00:51 The scripture text is very very very familiar text to all of us. Matthew chapter one verse number twenty-one,
00:59 just one verse Matthew chapter one verse number twenty-one, and she shall bring forth a son and thou shalt call His name Jesus.
01:08 For He shall, not maybe, not might, not perhaps, He shall save his people from their sins and she shall bring forth a son
01:16 and thou shalt call His name Jesus for He shall save His people from their sins.
01:23 I dare you in the name of Jesus to put some respect on His name today. Father God, we praise You right now. We lift You up.
01:31 We magnify Your name. If we had ten thousand tongues,
01:33 it would not be enough to praise You but Lord we promised to use this one tongue we have got right now.
01:39 And so as we preach this word, we pray Your power. We pray for Your presence in this place. Forgive me of my sins.
01:48 Hide it behind your cross. And Lord, may we be able to see it was good to have worship with You today virtually.
01:53 It was good to praise You today. It was good to lift You up today. And so as we preach this word, as we preach this message,
02:01 as we teach this word, we asked oh, God that You would be with us. Give us open minds and receptive hearts.
02:07 And when the appeal time comes, oh God, do what You do. Do what You do by Your Spirit, we pray. Thank You for this time.
02:14 Thank You for one more time, where we can praise Your Holy Name through the spoken word. It is in Jesus name we pray today.
02:21 Amen, amen.
02:24 Put some respect on His name. Society has said that the Christmas season is the most wonderful time of the year.
02:36 It is during this time of year that it appears that people tend to be extra kind, extra nice, extra giving, and extra helpful.
02:50 And I often ask myself the question, 'Why is it that we can only be this way during this time of year?'
02:58 I wish I had a witness in this place. But it is also during this period where millions engage in shopping.
03:06 That is right. Millions engage in shopping. Usually, during this time of year, malls and retail stores are packed.
03:15 Now, I do not know if they will be packed this year due to covid-19. But from what I can see,
03:22 people are still doing what they want to do and they are still going to the malls. Are you hearing what I am saying?
03:30 And if they are not in the malls, there on the internet as online shopping is at its highest ever. In fact on Black Friday of last week,
03:41 I am told that nine billion dollars were spent in online shopping, the highest in history.
03:49 So then, people are still shopping. People are still putting up Christmas decorations. People are still putting up Christmas lights.
03:58 People are still in the Christmas spirit. Let me today give you a word of caution. Because if we are not careful,
04:08 we can succumb to the commercialized cultural norms of our twenty-first century and cheapen Christmas by devaluing its significance
04:18 and making it a celebration, not of God's love manifested in human flesh. If we are not careful, we can denigrate, disparage,
04:30 and depreciate the fulfillment of God's promise. In Genesis chapter three verse number fifteen, the first promise in the Bible,
04:39 where God fixed the fall of Adam and Eve with the birth of Jesus Christ. And because of His birth, His life, and then His death,
04:52 we can have eternal life. If we are not careful during this season, people will disrespect Christ.
05:00 They will secularize this special event and celebrate Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus, and Frosty the Snowman.
05:10 Instead of focusing on God's gift to the world, they will focus on what they want the world to give to them.
05:19 Instead of knowing who Christ is and what Christ has done, Christ gets confused with Santa Claus.
05:27 As some people think that Jesus is making a list and that He is checking it twice to find out who has been naughty or nice.
05:36 But let me remind you today that there is a difference between Santa and Jesus.
05:43 There is a difference between Santa Claus and Jesus Christ. Santa is fake, but Jesus is the real thing. Santa lives at the North Pole,
05:54 but Jesus is everywhere. Santa rides on a sleigh, but Jesus rides in on the wind and He walks on water.
06:03 Santa comes only once per year,
06:07 but Jesus is an ever-present help in times of trouble. Santa, you have to wait in line to see him,
06:15 but Jesus is as close as the mention of His name. Santa does not even know your name,
06:21 but Jesus knew your name before you knew your name. Santa may make you laugh,
06:28 but Jesus gives you a joy that the world cannot give and the world cannot take it away.
06:34 Do not get you caught up in all this hype, that Christmas is only about Santa Claus, a Christmas tree, Santa's elves,
06:42 Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, mall visits, package, presidents, eggnog, or a partridge in a pear tree.
06:54 Christmas is about Jesus, not jingle bells. Christmas is about a savior, not Santa. Christmas is about a redeemer, not a reindeer.
07:07 Christmas is about Christ, and not Claus. But because Christmas is about Jesus, there is a lot of questions and concerns,
07:18 conversations and controversy, surrounding Jesus and Christmas.
07:24 Listen to me good. Many people say that Jesus was not born on December 25. And while Jesus was not born on December 25,
07:35 somebody just ought to praise God that He was born. Because although we really do not know when exactly Jesus was born,
07:44 we do know why He was born. Then there are some who will say, Jesus was not born of a virgin birth,
07:52 and that His mother Mary was not impregnated by the Holy Ghost. But let me tell you today,
07:58 although we do not know exactly how Jesus was born, we do know for whom Jesus was born. Jesus came into this world to save us.
08:08 Jesus came into this world to set us free. Jesus came into this world to give us eternal life. I do not know about you,
08:16 but I am free in Jesus today. Then there are some who say that the celebration of Christmas is contaminated by paganism
08:26 and Christmas should not be embraced as a legitimate part of the Christian faith. They say that Christmas finds its pagan practices,
08:37 its roots in the pagan practice of the Norseman of the ancient European days. But let me be clear,
08:44 do not confuse the incarnational ministry of Jesus with the empty idol worship of paganism. Do not get caught up.
08:57 Listen to me. Do not get caught up in a Christmas tree being a sign of paganism. Christmas is not about a Christmas tree.
09:08 Christmas is about what Jesus did on a tree. Christmas is not about Christmas lights,
09:15 but Christmas is about the light Jesus put in our hearts. Christmas is not about Christmas presents,
09:22 but Christmas is about Jesus' presence in our lives. So in the name of Jesus, do not get sidetracked with all these controversies
09:31 and all these conversations
09:34 but recognize today that the celebration of Jesus' birth has had more global impact than any celebration in the world and at Christmas.
09:45 Thank You, Jesus.
09:47 Even those who do not believe in Christ, even those who do not celebrate Christ, suddenly, all of a sudden begin to talk about peace,
09:54 goodwill, and the prospect for a better world. You see friends of mine. I get excited about this season
10:02 because the Christian faith is the only faith that celebrates the birth of its founder. The other major faiths of the world,
10:11 you name them, Islam, Buddhism, Confucianism, Hinduism, never claimed a miraculous birth for their founders.
10:20 Jesus' birth is so powerful that the enemies of God try without success to devalue the impact and power of Christ.
10:35 But I believe that I have got witnesses watching right now. Who knows that when you are doing something right, I am a witness to that.
10:43 When you are doing something right, that is when the devil tries to work overtime on you. If you weren't doing anything right,
10:51 then the devil would leave you alone. Somebody said, "Why is the devil always messing with me?
10:57 Why does it seem that he has no one's address, but my address?" You need to count it all joy,
11:02 because if the devil were not messing with you then maybe, you and the devil are running in the same direction,
11:07 'I wish I had a witness in this place.' Think about it. The world does not try to stop people from preaching in the name of Muhammad.
11:17 The world does not try to prevent people from preaching in the name of Buddha. No one has anything to say against Confucius.
11:27 But when you call the name of Jesus, when you call the name of Jesus anywhere in the world, it irritates some people
11:37 because there is something about the name of Jesus. There is something about the name of Jesus. That sets Jesus above Muhammad,
11:47 above Buddha, above Confucius. Do you hear what I am saying? And I have come to remind somebody today that
11:53 because of the power of His name, because of the power of His birth, because of the power of His life,
12:01 because of the power of His death, because of the power of His resurrection, you better put some respect on His name.
12:10 Now each one of us has a name. Each one of us possesses a name given to us by our parents. Maybe we were named after our parents.
12:21 Maybe we were named after a relative. Maybe we were named after our grandmother or our grandfather. Maybe we were named after aunts.
12:31 Maybe we were named after an uncle. Maybe we were named after a famous celebrity or a famous person.
12:39 Names are given to us by our parents and sometimes they mean something in our family background.
12:45 And then there are some names that our parents did not give to us.
12:49 Praise the Lord because every time they heard that name it would- it would elicit a certain negative response.
12:56 You see I was going name. And some of those names today, but I said, I better that do that
13:01 because some of you may carry some of those names. Are you hearing what I am saying with me?
13:05 But maybe that is why in naming your children, you stayed away from a certain name
13:10 because it was the name of some classmate from your childhood that you were at odds with.
13:16 Maybe you stayed away from a certain name because it reminded you of your past. Maybe it was an old boyfriend.
13:23 Maybe it was an old girlfriend. Maybe it was an old boss or an old supervisor. Maybe you stayed away from a certain name
13:31 because it carried a certain connotation. I mean if we are real today, I do not know anyone who has named their child Jezebel.
13:39 I do not know anyone who has named their child Judas. I do not hear people naming their children Saddam Hussein or Adolf Hitler.
13:47 Why? Because the actions of these persons were so bad that nobody wants to be associated with bad names.
13:55 Are you hearing what I am saying?
13:57 But I am so glad I read and can read Matthew 1:21. Because, in Matthew 1:21, we are told of a good name. In fact,
14:06 The Bible says, "And she shall bring forth a son and thou shalt call his name Jesus. For he shall save his people from their sins."
14:16 So you better put some respect on His name. Why should you put some respect on His name? Number one, because it is a sanctified name.
14:28 His name is a sanctified name. You see that sanctified means to set aside, to set apart, to make holy.
14:37 Remember, the Sabbath is sanctified. It is set apart. It is set aside. The Sabbath is made holy. The tithe is sanctified.
14:47 The tithe is set apart. The tithe is set aside. The tithe is made holy. You need to understand the name of Jesus is sanctified.
14:58 It is set aside. It is set apart. It is Holy. You see we often hear names, James, John, Jason, Michael, Matthew, Brian, Benjamin,
15:14 Christopher, Collin, Tyler, Timothy, Wayne, and William, but you do not hear commonly people naming their child Jesus.
15:25 Because there is something sanctified about that name. His name was chosen by his Father. Mary was his mother,
15:34 but Mary did not choose his name. His earthly father was Joseph. But Joseph did not choose his name.
15:41 His name was chosen by his Heavenly Father. It was set aside. It was set apart. It was holy. You see friends of mine.
15:50 In Hebrew culture when your name was chosen, your name was symbolic of your character. And so your behavior defines your name.
16:00 I wonder what your name would be if it defined your character. I wish I had a witness in this place. But in the Bible,
16:06 Moses meant to pull out of the water, to draw out of water. Jacob meant supplanter or trickster. Joseph meant God will increase.
16:17 Samuel meant God has heard. David meant beloved. But the Bible says in Matthew 1:21 that when God named His son,
16:27 He named him Jesus because Jesus means Jehovah is salvation. That is and make somebody want to shout right there.
16:36 God loves us so much that He sent His son Jesus into the world to die for our sins and the very mention of his name means salvation.
16:48 Now, do not get it twisted friends of mine. God does not love us because Jesus died for us. Jesus died for us because God loves us.
16:57 You all do hear what I am saying. I said God does not love us because Jesus died for us. Jesus died for us because God loves us.
17:06 God sent Jesus to take our place on the cross. He who knew no sin became sin for us that we might have salvation.
17:14 So you better put some respect on His name because His name is a sanctified name.
17:20 Jesus, and let me be clear on this, is not your homeboy.
17:23 He is not the man upstairs. He is not the big guy. But Jesus is the King of kings. Jesus is the Lord of lords.
17:35 Jesus is somebody's waymaker. Jesus is the bridge over troubled waters. Jesus is somebody's doctor in the sick room.
17:45 He is somebody's lawyer in the courtroom. I do not know what you call Him. But I call him Jesus. Isaiah called Him Wonderful,
17:53 Counselor, the Mighty God, Everlasting Father. He called Him the Prince of Peace. You better understand who He is
18:00 and put some respect on His name.
18:03 But number two, the reason why you need to put some respect on His name. His name is a sinless name.
18:10 There is no sin associated with Jesus' name. There is no spot. There is no blemish. There is no wrinkle.
18:19 There is no tarnish with the name of Jesus. You will remember in the Old Testament sacrificial system,
18:25 in order to receive forgiveness from sin, sinners had to come and bring a lamb, bring a goat, bring a sheep,
18:33 bring a bullock, bring an offering,
18:35 a sin offering that was without blemish until the sanctuary there daily to receive forgiveness from sin.
18:43 The sin-bearer placed his hand on the head of the sin offering, the throat of the sin offering was slit.
18:51 So blood came streaming down because remember, there can be no forgiveness of sin without the shedding of blood.
18:59 Go back to Genesis. And you will remember that God did not accept Cain's sacrifice not because Cain brought his best,
19:07 it was not about bringing his best. God could not accept Cain's sacrifice because Cain did not bring God what God asks for.
19:14 If you are going to bring a sacrifice, you got to bring a lamb without blemish. Because there has to be some blood.
19:20 There has to be the shedding of blood. Are you hearing what I am saying?
19:23 In the Old Testament, they brought this sin offering and offer the blood of the sin offering was shed.
19:30 But I am so glad that to know that when Jesus died we do not need a lamb anymore. We do not need a goat anymore.
19:39 We do not need sheep anymore. John 1:29 says, "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sins of the world."
19:48 Jesus the perfect Lamb of God. He was sinless but took on our sins that we might have everlasting life and be saved.
19:57 Hallelujah somebody. Let me try this way because somebody still not getting it. You are watching but you are not getting it.
20:03 I wish I had a church because they would say amen in this place, but you are not getting. Let me try this way.
20:08 Jesus got dirty so we could be clean. Let me say that one more time. Jesus got dirty so that we might be clean.
20:23 I think about our dumpster-diving God. I mean no disrespect by that but I have a deep appreciation,
20:34 a deep adoration for a God who left pristine sinless heaven to search through the filth, and the trash,
20:45 and the rubbish of this dirty world for something precious to him.
20:50 He left the celestial courts of heaven to come down to this sin infested earth to find you and to find me.
20:59 He got dirty so I could become clean. His name is a sinless name. There are no sins associated with His name.
21:09 There are no transgressions associated with His name. There are no crimes associated with His name.
21:15 There is no bad reputation associated with His name.
21:20 But I am so glad that two thousand years ago, one Friday afternoon on a hill called Calvary, Jesus died.
21:31 And when Jesus died something happened. I wish I had a church in his place.
21:36 When the blood spilled down from his body something happened. I wish I had a witness in this place.
21:43 When Jesus died salvation was available to you and to me.
21:48 You see friends. I cannot explain how a brown cow can eat green grass and give off white milk.
21:57 Just like I cannot explain how this brown body can be dipped in red blood and come out white as snow.
22:05 But I know this, Jesus' blood, it saves me. When the Romans crucified Jesus they made one crucial mistake. They shed His blood.
22:16 They should have hung him. They should have beaten him up. They should have made him drink poison. They should have stood stone him.
22:24 They should have knocked him out. But when they let His blood shed, His blood flow down and had a revival over death, hell,
22:31 and the grave, and His blood will never lose its power. His blood will never lose its effectiveness.
22:37 His blood will never lose its potency. And when His name is called-- I said when his name is called,
22:46 everybody watching right now, everybody watching who is saved, who is sanctified, who is secured,
22:54 and selected knows that there is salvation in His name. You better put some respect on His name.
23:02 His name is a sanctified name. His name is a sinless name.
23:07 But I have got one more point. His name is a saving name. Romans-- Acts 4:12 says,
23:13 "There is no other name under heaven whereby we can be saved but the name of Jesus."
23:19 Which means Mohamed cannot give you salvation. Buddha cannot give you salvation. Confucius cannot give you salvation.
23:26 Brahma cannot give you salvation. Shema cannot give you salvation. President Bush cannot give you salvation.
23:34 President Clinton cannot give you salvation. President Obama cannot give you salvation. President Trump cannot give you salvation.
23:42 President Biden cannot give you salvation. Pastor Byrd cannot give you salvation.
23:47 But there is only one name under heaven whereby we can be saved and that is the name of Jesus.
23:54 You better put some respect on His name because, at the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow, every tongue must confess,
24:03 every president, every senator, every congressman, every governor, every king, every queen, every preacher, every teacher,
24:11 every accountant, every scientist, everybody at the name of Jesus, shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
24:22 I do not know about you, but I cannot sit still. I cannot hold my peace.
24:27 I cannot be quiet at the mention of His name because I have got a witness that knows at the mention of His name.
24:33 Cancer goes in remission. Hypertension goes into hiding. Coronavirus goes on vacation. Diabetes simmers down.
24:43 Relationships are restored. Marriages are saved. At His name children come back to the Lord. At His name jobs are found.
24:52 At His name souls are saved. At the name of Jesus, Romans 10:13 says that whosoever, that means everybody-- whosoever,
25:01 that means anybody, whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved." This means to the utmost, Jesus saves.
25:10 To the guttermost, Jesus saves. He will pick you up and turn you around. Hallelujah, Jesus saves.
25:17 It is time to stop but my soul is getting happy right about now. If I were a demon,
25:22 I would look for an exit door out of this sanctuary right now. Because I am about to shout on Jesus' name.
25:27 It is a sanctified name. It is a sinless name. It is a saving name. You better put some respect on His name.
25:36 I am not going to blaspheme His name. I am not going to curse His name. I am not going to profane His name.
25:41 I am not going to make light of His name. I am not going to disrespectfully use His name.
25:46 But I am going to bless His name. Bless the Lord, oh, my soul and all that is within me. Bless His holy name.
25:55 I am going to lift up His name. Jesus said, "If I be lifted up, I will draw all men unto me." I am going to magnify His name.
26:03 Oh, come and magnify the Lord with me. And let us exalt His name together.
26:08 I am going to defend His name for I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation.
26:16 But in the end I am going to praise His name. Praise ye the Lord. Praise God in His sanctuary.
26:23 Praise Him in the firmament of his power. Praise Him for His mighty acts. Praise Him according to His excellent greatness.
26:29 Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet. Praise Him with the sultry in the heart. Praise Him with the timbrel and dance.
26:34 Praise with string instruments and organs. Praise Him with the loud cymbals and the high sounding cymbals.
26:40 Let everything-- let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
26:48 And she shall bring forth a son. Thou shalt call His name Jesus. For He shall save His people from their sin.
27:02 This is what Christmas is about, Jesus. This is what this season is about, Jesus. This is what the first advent is about, Jesus.
27:14 This is what life is about, Jesus. This is about what we are living for, Jesus. This is what salvation is about, Jesus.
27:29 And you better put some respect on His name because it is a sanctified name. It is a sinless name. It is a saving name.
