00:01 Welcome back to Your Favorites by Request.
00:03 As I often say,
00:04 this is my favorite segment of the program
00:06 where we get to talk to some really important people,
00:09 you the viewers.
00:11 And this is a friend of mine on the line
00:14 that is a music minister
00:15 in Springfield, Missouri
00:17 at the Crossway Baptist Church,
00:19 Mark Mathes, a wonderful songwriter
00:21 and singer and piano player.
00:23 I am honored to have you with us Mark Mathes.
00:25 Thank you for calling in.
00:28 Well, thank you.
00:29 It's good to be here. It's good to see you today.
00:31 Yeah, great to see you too.
00:33 Now, tell me what does music mean to you?
00:36 Oh, Tim, music means a world to me.
00:38 I've been singing since I was child.
00:41 My family, all sing.
00:43 And we would sing in the car on our way to church.
00:47 We'd sing at home. Sing with grandma and grandpa.
00:49 I've just been around music all my life.
00:51 It just really speaks to my heart.
00:53 Right.
00:54 And... You are...
00:55 How many are in your choir there at Crossway?
00:57 Oh, right now somewhere around 160.
01:00 That is awesome.
01:02 And you have an orchestra as well?
01:03 We do, yeah.
01:05 Now do you lead worship from the piano,
01:07 or do you stand and lead worship?
01:10 Most of the time I stand and lead worship.
01:12 But I do go to piano from time to time and play.
01:15 Nice, I love to have that flexibility.
01:16 That is awesome.
01:18 And you are a wonderful songwriter,
01:20 you have some songs...
01:22 What are some of the songs that you have written?
01:23 A lot of southern gospel songs.
01:25 Yeah, lots of southern gospel songs,
01:28 some that you might be familiar with.
01:30 Sometimes it takes mountain by the gate of could be.
01:33 Now, The Hoppers are singing a new song I wrote
01:36 called "Life is good".
01:37 Nice, yeah.
01:39 Great. Yeah.
01:40 Gold City says what?
01:42 Oh, they did, I believe in some other songs.
01:45 Right. Yeah, you know what?
01:46 It's always hard to think of songs
01:48 when you're put on the spot.
01:50 I know. I know from my experience.
01:52 Well, what about a favorite song
01:55 that you have, maybe that you haven't written.
01:58 Oh, in this, it's hard to pick out a favorite song
02:01 but, one that's really dear to me
02:04 "What a day that would be".
02:06 Oh, great, that's by Jim Hill and...
02:09 I think so. Yeah.
02:10 I remember whenever I was with the Spears.
02:14 Brock Speer used to love to sing that song,
02:17 and let's give that one a stamp right here, and so...
02:21 Okay. Just sing along with me.
02:23 Sing along at home.
02:24 There is coming a day
02:28 When no heart aches shall come
02:32 No more clouds in the sky
02:36 No more tears to dim the eye
02:41 All is peace forever more
02:45 On that happy golden shore
02:49 What a day, glorious day that will be
02:57 Sing it out loud.
02:58 What a day that will be
03:03 When my Jesus I shall see
03:07 And I look upon His face
03:11 The One who saved me by His grace
03:16 When He takes me by the hand
03:20 And leads me through the Promised Land
03:24 What a day, glorious day that will be
03:37 Wonderful, wonderful song.
03:39 Mark Mathes, thank you very much.
03:40 You're a dear friend, I appreciate you so much.
03:43 Thank you, Tim, and you too. God bless you.
03:45 You have mentioned a song that you wrote
03:48 and I just want to do just a verse and a chorus of it,
03:53 because it's such a beautiful song
03:54 and if you want to sing along, you are free to do so.
03:58 You wrote it so,
03:59 but I'm gonna play it in the key of A.
04:01 I faced a mountain
04:04 That I never faced before
04:08 That's why I'm calling on the Lord
04:15 I know it's been awhile
04:19 But Lord please hear my prayer
04:23 I need you like I never have before
04:28 Sometimes it takes a mountain
04:36 Sometimes a troubled sea
04:43 Sometimes it takes a desert
04:50 To get a hold of me
04:57 Your Love is so much stronger
05:03 Then whatever troubles me
05:10 Sometimes it takes a mountain
05:17 To trust you and believe
05:27 Awesome, sometimes it takes a mountain,
05:29 Mark Mathes wrote that song.
05:30 Great, great song.
05:33 Here is a song I want to send out to Jessica
05:35 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina,
05:37 a great classic, "There is a River".
05:49 There is a river
05:58 That flows from deep within
06:07 There is a fountain
06:16 That frees the soul from sin
06:25 Come to this water
06:34 There is a vast supply
06:42 There is a river
06:50 That never shall run dry
07:00 There was a thirsty woman
07:08 She was drawing from a well
07:17 Her life, it was ruined and wasted
07:26 And her soul was bound for hell
07:34 Oh but then she met the Master
07:44 And He told her of her sin
07:52 He said
07:54 "If you just drink this water
08:01 You'll never thirst again"
08:11 There is a river
08:19 That flows from deep within
08:28 There is a fountain
08:37 That frees my soul from sin
08:46 Just come to this water
08:55 For there is a vast supply
09:04 There is a river
09:13 That never shall run dry
09:36 You are beautiful beyond description
09:43 Too marvelous for words
09:49 Too wonderful for comprehension
09:55 Like nothing ever seen or heard
10:02 Who can grasp Your infinite wisdom?
10:08 Who can fathom the depths of your love?
10:15 You are beautiful beyond description
10:21 Majesty enthroned above
10:28 And I stand, I stand in awe of You
10:35 I stand, I stand in awe of You
10:42 Holy God, to whom all praise is due
10:50 I stand in awe of You
11:05 You are beautiful beyond description
11:12 Yet, God crushed You for my sin
11:19 In agony and deep affliction
11:24 Cut off that I may enter in
11:33 Who can grasp such tender compassion?
11:40 Who can fathom this mercy so free?
11:46 You are beautiful beyond description
11:51 Lamb of God, who died for me
11:59 And I stand, I stand in awe of You
12:06 I stand, I stand in awe of You
12:12 Holy God, to whom all praise is due
12:19 I stand in awe of You
12:26 I stand in awe of You
12:34 I stand in awe of You
12:52 My prayer is that...
12:53 You know Christ
12:55 and that you know Him so well
12:56 that you stand in awe of Him,
12:58 as He directs your life with the song on your lips.
13:01 We'll see you next time.
13:11 Send me your song
13:13 Then you sing along with me
