00:01 Welcome back to the Ultimate Prescription
00:02 and thank you for joining us.
00:04 I'm Nick Evenson, your host,
00:05 and we're talking with Dr. James Marcum today
00:06 about the medicinal properties of food,
00:09 and how we can incorporate that into our diet
00:11 to live healthier lives as God intended.
00:13 And, Dr. Marcum, what are we gonna talk about today?
00:15 What kind of foods have we brought
00:17 that we're gonna talk about?
00:18 You know, you know,
00:19 there are so many different foods
00:21 we can talk about,
00:22 but what I wanna do is talk about specific foods
00:25 and studies that have been done that proves,
00:28 proves beyond a doubt that these foods,
00:30 the chemicals in them
00:31 can be used to treat certain conditions.
00:34 And I had a gentleman that came to the office
00:36 not too long ago
00:38 and he suffered from Gout, okay.
00:39 Now what is gout?
00:41 You know, gout is a very painful condition
00:44 that many people have
00:45 where the body makes excess uric acid,
00:48 and the uric acid gets in a joint usually
00:51 and it causes lots of inflammation,
00:53 lots of pain.
00:55 In fact, one of the joints
00:57 that happens with the most is the big toe.
00:59 So when anyone comes with a swollen big toe,
01:03 you always say, "Well, could they have gout?"
01:05 And the way we make this diagnosis,
01:07 it's sort of an arthritis, inflammation,
01:10 inflammation of a joint is called arthritis.
01:13 And different things can cause the inflammation,
01:15 sometimes the inflammation is caused by uric acid,
01:17 we call that gout,
01:19 sometimes it's caused by just age and wearing out,
01:22 we call that osteoarthritis.
01:24 Sometimes the body attacks itself,
01:26 we call that rheumatoid arthritis.
01:29 So there's different types of arthritis
01:31 and we can treat this with medicinal,
01:34 you know, we can use food as a medicine treat.
01:35 So this gentleman came to me
01:37 and he had a lot of problems with gout.
01:40 Well, I told him that cherries could be used to treat gout.
01:44 And we brought some cherries here today,
01:47 and he started eating the cherries.
01:49 And guess what?
01:51 His inflammation of his body decreased.
01:54 And I wanna share with our viewers of how cherries
01:57 is the treatment for inflammation,
01:59 specifically, the inflammation of gout.
02:01 And we brought some cherries here, didn't we?
02:02 That's right, we did it.
02:04 I'm actually gonna go ahead and take one
02:05 and we're gonna cut it up here and just kinda...
02:06 You've gotta tell and taste
02:08 'cause if we've got food, we might as well try it.
02:10 But some people have never even eaten cherries very much.
02:12 So are those hard, are they soft?
02:15 These are whole cherries, and they're, they're not hard.
02:19 They're kind of soft,
02:20 but they have a pit in them and a stem.
02:22 So I'm gonna try not to cut myself here
02:24 and we're gonna cut one open and see.
02:25 Okay.
02:27 So I gave this gentleman cherries to help with,
02:30 you know, his inflammation of his gout,
02:32 'cause he had gout a lot.
02:33 Uric acid, he measured in his blood,
02:36 sometimes we used to actually check crystals,
02:39 we used to put a needle in it
02:40 and get the crystals out to prove
02:42 what kind of arthritis it was.
02:44 But we started eating cherries and guess what his gout...
02:48 Are you gonna try that or you want me to try that?
02:49 Oh, you try that, Marcum.
02:51 So the cherries...
02:52 You better be careful,
02:53 don't stain your jacket, please.
02:55 No, I won't.
02:56 Very juicy. Juicy.
02:57 Very flavorful. I like that.
02:59 You can eat them on their own, they're nice and sweet.
03:01 And about a cup is probably a decent serving I would guess.
03:05 This is about a cup of cherries.
03:06 And...
03:08 I guess you eat them raw.
03:09 You wash them off and eat them raw.
03:10 Yeah. Okay.
03:12 They're probably better for you
03:13 just like this rather than having them in a pie.
03:14 'Cause what happens when we take these foods
03:16 and we put them in with ice cream, or pies...
03:18 Sometimes we get the bad things from the other foods
03:21 and, you know, it negates as much of the good stuff
03:23 from the cherries.
03:24 But anyway, these ideas as cherry is treating gout
03:27 and inflammation has been around for a long time.
03:31 In fact, in the '50s, there was a Cleveland Clinic article
03:35 that suggested cherry as a treatment for gout.
03:37 But back in around 2006,
03:40 in the Journal of the Nutrition,
03:43 Dr Kelly showed the studies where people ate cherries,
03:47 it helped inflammation,
03:49 decreased the inflammation that comes with gout.
03:53 But, you know, you want to get at the cause of gout as well,
03:56 remember, uric acid.
03:57 Sometimes people just get it
03:59 because their metabolism is poor.
04:01 But a lot of people eat uric acid in their foods.
04:04 We know that foods that have animals in them
04:07 have a lot more uric acid in them than plants.
04:11 So we... People eat more plants that have lots of gout
04:13 that helps prevent it.
04:15 Now the medicines that sometimes used to that
04:17 is we have one called, Allopurinol.
04:19 And that's really used to help the production of uric acid,
04:23 and then when a person gets it,
04:24 they get on lots of anti-inflammatory,
04:27 'cause it's very painful when your foot is all swollen.
04:29 So they've traditionally taken one called Indocin,
04:33 other anti-inflammatories,
04:34 but now this study shows that maybe instead of taking
04:37 the anti-inflammatory medicines,
04:39 we can take cherries as a treatment
04:41 for chronic disease.
04:43 So as we talk this series of programs,
04:46 we're gonna talk about different foods
04:48 and how it can help different conditions,
04:50 and also we're gonna talk about how certain foods,
04:52 bad foods can cause, accelerate things to happen.
04:57 Did you know that, Nick, if you have genetics,
05:00 let's say you're born with,
05:01 you know, your bad genes for instance,
05:04 do we know that bad habits including bad foods
05:07 put stress on our bodies?
05:10 And when the stress happens to the body,
05:12 the part of our DNA called the telomere starts to change,
05:15 it gets smaller,
05:16 then we have mutations in our genetics,
05:19 and disease is activated at a much earlier age.
05:22 So let's say you're destined to have abnormalities
05:26 in a metabolism at certain age.
05:28 Well, if you eat certain foods that put stress on that system,
05:31 that might happen at an earlier age
05:34 than if you didn't do things
05:35 that we're putting stress on the body.
05:37 So everything that we put in our bodies, in our minds,
05:40 is either gonna make us better or worse.
05:43 And what I define as stress is anything
05:45 that goes against God's original plan,
05:48 sort of puts stress on us.
05:50 And we saw in our opening about,
05:52 we talked about Genesis
05:54 and how our original plan was
05:56 to eat lots of things that grow.
05:58 Well, when we put things that don't grow in us,
06:01 it could put stress on it and activate bad things,
06:04 including bad genetics
06:05 that we might have inherited from our mom and dad.
06:08 No, not everything, you know, some things are purely genetic
06:11 but usually it's things that stresses,
06:14 turn on our genetics,
06:16 and there's a rapidly growing field
06:17 called epigenetics.
06:19 What activates your genes? What turns them on and off?
06:22 Why do these things happen?
06:24 A very fascinating thing that we're gonna talk about,
06:27 and food seems to play a role
06:29 in how our genes are turned on and off.
06:31 And it seems like food seems to help our good genes do better.
06:35 Yeah.
06:36 You know, there's a lot of great information right there.
06:38 Let me kind of see if I can recapture
06:40 a couple of key points that you mentioned.
06:42 One of them was that uric acid is the key contributor
06:44 for causing gout, is that right?
06:46 Yes, that's correct.
06:47 And eating a heavy meat diet contributes to more uric acid?
06:51 Yes, it does. Okay.
06:52 That's more gout in the body and if you have bad genes
06:55 that can't, you know, metabolize uric acid,
06:57 that uric acid is made too much of it,
07:00 we can see that in the blood or in the joint
07:02 and if it gets in a joint,
07:04 and the crystals start to deposit in that joint,
07:06 you have lots of pain.
07:08 A big swollen toe, a big swollen foot,
07:11 those type of things happen.
07:12 So basically, if we eat more zero'iym as you said earlier,
07:16 things that grow...
07:17 Things that grow.
07:19 Eat more of that, that's kind of God's plan for our lives
07:20 and if we follow God's plan,
07:22 it's gonna, it's gonna help many areas of our life.
07:25 And we're gonna find out that these are the studies
07:27 that we know about,
07:29 there's lots of studies that we don't,
07:30 so we know that cherries help gout
07:32 but we also know that cherries have antioxidants
07:35 that help our DNA,
07:36 lower the risk of cancer,
07:37 lowering the risk of many other things
07:39 that are going on in our bodies.
07:41 That's great.
07:42 You know, we've actually been working
07:43 on a Bible study program
07:45 called Biblical Prescriptions for Life, this last year,
07:47 we're gonna talk about that more in just a minute,
07:49 but we've got a clip
07:50 that Dr. Marcum presents a Biblical Prescriptions
07:52 for Life in 60 seconds,
07:54 and we wanna take a look at that right now.
07:56 I'm Dr. James Marcum
07:58 with your Biblical Prescriptions for Life.
08:01 Unfortunately, many in this world
08:03 suffer from chronic pain.
08:05 Well, I've got some good news for you
08:07 and that's a Biblical prescription
08:09 for the treatment of chronic pain.
08:11 It's in Psalm 100:2, it says
08:14 "Serve the Lord with gladness,
08:16 come before His presence with singing."
08:20 Did you know that when we sing, when we have music in our life,
08:23 it is a treatment for chronic pain?
08:26 Studies in Circulation, the Southern Medical Journal,
08:29 and also the Cochrane report has shown,
08:31 that when we have music in our lives,
08:33 it decreases our pain in our body.
08:35 It might do this by increasing oxytocin and endorphins
08:39 or decreasing chronic stress.
08:42 But if you have chronic pain,
08:43 I want to encourage you
08:44 turn to a biblical prescription for life.
08:47 That's found in Psalms 100:2,
08:49 "Come before the Lord with singing."
08:56 So that's a Biblical prescription
08:58 from the scriptures
08:59 that can help everybody's lives today.
09:02 And I think it's so interesting, Nick,
09:04 that now we have technology to prove the Bible is true.
09:10 You know, we know that God's words are true,
09:12 but now we have science, and studies,
09:14 and we have DNA.
09:16 We can look at these genetics,
09:17 and we can look at these MRIs and scans,
09:20 and show how God's word actually does affect our lives.
09:23 Yeah.
09:24 And what that, you know, that's why we published this
09:27 Biblical Prescriptions for Life,
09:28 this is a seven-week Bible study
09:30 that literally walks people through
09:33 these Biblical prescriptions.
09:34 Right.
09:35 So this is a video and a study guide
09:37 that people can take
09:39 and do at home with their friends.
09:40 And this is to help make these health principles practical,
09:43 and applicable, and to help each other along
09:46 in studying God's word and in a small group setting.
09:49 Is that right? Yeah.
09:50 And it's also a way that they can help their friends,
09:52 and neighbors, and if you're,
09:54 if you wanna share the gospel with someone,
09:56 it gives ways that you can introduce them
09:58 into a relationship with their Savior.
10:00 'Cause this shows how worship in itself
10:02 changes their physiology.
10:04 Yeah, now, is this just about food
10:06 or is this covering a broad spectrum of health?
10:08 Health is more than just one aspect.
10:11 You know, health involves everything in our lives.
10:13 The way we think, the way we move,
10:16 the way we interact with God, the food we eat,
10:19 but it really focuses on worship,
10:21 and how worship acts as a corner of our health,
10:24 'cause when we have worship, God gives us the power
10:26 to change for the right reasons.
10:28 So how can people get a hold of this?
10:29 Yeah.
10:30 So we would love to encourage you all,
10:32 if you wanna learn more about
10:33 Biblical Prescriptions for Life,
10:35 you can visit our website at BiblicalPrescriptions.com/3abn.
10:39 And you can find the video that you just saw
10:41 of Dr. Marcum presenting a 60-second message,
10:43 and you can share that on your social media,
10:46 you can download those, and play them in your church.
10:48 Wherever you can,
10:49 you're welcome to download those
10:50 and share those.
10:52 And we also invite you to call 3ABN
10:53 and get your copy by calling them at
10:55 618-627-4651.
10:59 So they can order this,
11:00 they can start their study in their home,
11:02 and they can take this to their friends and neighbors,
11:04 small groups, that sounds like something that,
11:07 and it's very inexpensive as well,
11:09 much cheaper than taking medicines
11:11 the rest of your life.
11:12 That's right.
11:13 You know, we're trying to follow Jesus' example here
11:15 when He, when He reached people,
11:16 He tried to help them with their physical health
11:18 and then point them towards a relationship
11:19 with the Father.
11:21 And that's kind of
11:22 a lot of your philosophy in health, right?
11:23 Yeah, and if they have questions
11:25 and get a hold of us, how they can get a hold of us?
11:28 With our website? Yep, that's right.
11:29 Sorry. Our website... You got blank on me there.
11:31 That's right, sorry. Stay with me.
11:33 HeartwiseMinistries.org is our website
11:35 and we encourage you to visit that
11:37 and see health articles, we also have radio programs,
11:40 a lot of great health content you can find there.
11:42 So thank you very much for joining us today
11:44 and Dr. Marcum is gonna close in a moment
11:46 with just a few final thoughts.
11:55 We have covered a lot of ground today.
11:59 But I wanna leave you with two major thoughts
12:01 that you can take with you.
12:02 Number one, is food can be used as medicine.
12:06 We can use certain foods to treat things
12:09 as well as to prevent different conditions,
12:12 and we want you to check with your doctor,
12:14 when your medical condition to see
12:16 if certain foods would help, help you do better.
12:19 So don't do this 'cause certain foods
12:21 can interact with the medications
12:23 your physicians might have you on.
12:25 Point number two,
12:27 is cherries is very useful for people
12:30 that have gout and inflammation.
12:32 So try some cherries if you might suffer from gout.
12:35 And realize cherries probably do a lot more
12:37 than just help the inflammation of gout.
12:41 We also know the importance of prayer,
12:43 and God's word in healing our bodies 'cause, you know,
12:46 all of us are promised healing.
12:48 It's just where, when, and how,
12:49 when we have that relationship with our heavenly Father.
12:53 So let me say a prayer with you today,
12:55 those of you that might need a little extra help,
12:58 might need encouragement to make some changes
13:00 one step at a time.
13:01 Let's bow our heads.
13:04 Heavenly Father, we thank you for being a God
13:06 that loves us and give us recommendations
13:08 about the foods we should eat,
13:10 and given us different things we can do to make our bodies
13:13 that you've given us better, now those,
13:15 all those out there that need healing right now, Father,
13:18 we pray that You be especially close to them.
13:21 Now go with us this day, is our prayer.
13:24 Amen.
13:26 Well, I wanna thank you for joining us
13:28 on the Ultimate Prescription.
13:29 If you want to get a hold of me,
13:31 go to our website HeartwiseMinistries.org,
13:34 there we have a wonderful prayer page.
13:36 And if you leave your name and your prayer requests,
13:39 we would be happy to pray for you.
