00:15 Happy Sabbath. We're super excited that you

07:48 We have one more song we're going to be singing
07:51 this morning. It's titled "I Surrender."
07:55 And I don't think there's any better reminder than "I Surrender"
07:59 before another week. Oftentimes, we get to the end of the week, and we're like,
08:04 "Thank you, Lord, for getting us through." And He has our back, and He does
08:08 get us through those weeks. But, guys, something that I've been trying to encourage myself

20:45 I heard on the radio. I was going home one evening from Pioneer for supper.
20:50 I'm listening to WBBM Newsradio out of Chicago. And I had to pull off the road.
20:59 My eyes were so out of focus with tears.
21:04 West Monroe, Louisiana. A father and mother were going
21:08 out for a Saturday night, and they took their 14-year-old
21:12 little girl over to her girlfriend's place
21:15 to spend the night. But as young daughters can do,

21:24 to her friend, "Let's go over -- Let's go to our house,

21:31 1:00 in the morning, Mom and Dad come back from Saturday night on the town, and Kaye says,

21:51 The father instinctively grabs a gun and shoots his daughter through the neck.
21:58 Her last words to him -- "Daddy, I love you."
22:09 I just sat there at the side of the road. I have a little girl.
22:12 She's still my little girl. And I cannot imagine how a father would feel
22:22 killing his little girl. We've got an obscure text here. We're going to look at it
22:31 right now. It has this story and Jesus' love written all over it.
22:36 And you've got to see it. So open your Bible. Hope you can find the book --
22:39 Zechariah. It's next to the last book in the Old Testament.
22:43 If you get to Malachi, just one more book. Zechariah, chapter 12.
22:50 Zechariah, chapter 12.
22:59 God's speaking. "I will pour out on the house of David
23:04 and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace
23:09 and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced,
23:16 and they will mourn for Him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for Him
23:21 as one grieves for a firstborn son." I was in this church yesterday
23:27 afternoon as we said goodbye to a firstborn son. Too young to die.
23:32 Just under 40 years of age. Sad. I can't imagine that father
23:41 on the front row of his daughter's funeral. I mean, what is going through
23:46 his mind? But that's what we just read. See this line?
23:54 "They will look on me, the one they have pierced." They killed Him.
24:01 They killed Him.
24:06 It's as plain as a nose on your face. It's interesting, that line,
24:12 "The one they have pierced," their look on me. It's tucked away in
24:16 the New Testament. Friday afternoon, late, the man on the center Cross
24:23 has just expired with that triumphant cry. It is finished.
24:30 They're making sure the prisoners will die quickly. They break the legs of one
24:37 of the thieves, they break the legs of the others so that they can't push against
24:42 their legs and they will die of suffocation. They come to the man
24:46 on the middle cross. Let's pick it up right here in John, chapter 19.
24:49 "But when they came to Jesus and found that He was already dead, they did not break his legs.
24:56 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear,
25:00 bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. The man who saw it
25:05 has given testimony." That's John Boy. "And his testimony is true.
25:09 He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe.
25:15 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled --
25:18 'Not one of his bones will be broken.' And as another scripture says,
25:22 'They will look on the one they have pierced.'" We just read it, didn't we?
25:27 "They will look on the one they have pierced." Zechariah 12, John 19
25:35 telling the same Calvary truth. And what is that Calvary truth? We killed Him.
25:43 I'm going to put it in big letters so it sticks in your mind.

26:14 you're trying to make, but let's be real. I didn't kill him.
26:19 Really, I didn't." And that's the nearly overmastering challenge
26:25 God has with me. "How am I going to help Dwight?" Understand the immensity
26:35 of the cost of just His sins alone, just one of His sins. Never mind the sins
26:41 of the world. Let's say I go over to your house for dinner or lunch.
26:51 I'd love to. And you're in the kitchen throwing lunch together
26:55 and I'm out there. Let's say your house has a fireplace, and you know above
26:58 the fireplace is that mantle, and you got all your little keepsakes there.
27:02 And clumsy me. I pick up a beautiful vase, and I'm turning it in my hand
27:08 when I drop it. It falls to the bricks below, and I am so embarrassed.
27:13 I am down there. I have to get these shards picked up before you come
27:16 out of the kitchen. And I'm picking them up as fast as I can.
27:19 Suddenly you're racing out of the kitchen, and I look up at you, and I mumble,
27:22 "I'm so sorry. Clumsy me. Listen, don't worry about it.
27:29 I'll get you another one. I think I've seen one in Walmart,
27:33 and I'll get it for you." And you look back at me with your -- with your
27:37 blanched face. Your lips are moving, but nothing is coming out.
27:43 And finally, when your voice whispers, you tell me,
27:48 "That was an heirloom from my great-grandmother. There's only one other one
27:54 in the world, and it is valued at $167,000." You know, I kind of felt sorry
28:04 a moment ago, but I've got astronomical repentance going on right now.
28:11 Why? Because I just realized the cost of what my clumsiness has done.
28:24 When I know the cost, then I feel the pain. "And I will pour out
28:32 on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace

28:40 and they will mourn for Him as one mourns for an only child and grieve bitterly for Him
28:45 as one grieves for a firstborn." See, that's why God had to pour his spirit out,
28:52 because until His spirit works on this heart, I'm telling you, I'm just not going to get it.
28:59 I'm not going to realize the immensity of the cost. My sins killed Him.
29:10 Your sins, our sins. You say, "Aw, come on, Dwight. What sins are you talking
29:15 about?" Well, I'm talking about -- I'm talking about your darling
29:18 sin. And I'm talking about my besetting sin.
29:23 You know, the one that we have -- We even have a hard time
29:28 wanting to let go of it. "Mañana. I'll get to it someday."
29:33 Someday, that's gone. Promise, it'll be gone. And for those of us
29:38 who are sitting here right now and saying, "Yo, I appreciate this talk about great sins,
29:44 but I'm going to be honest with you. I cannot think of one big sin
29:49 in my life right now." And I can think of one big sin in your life right now.
29:56 Dishonesty. No, come on. I'm being serious.
30:01 Because, look, if you aren't able to admit that you have the sin that
30:09 killed Him... you're doing a number on yourself.
30:16 You are fooling yourself, sir. I'm telling you. The one sin,
30:25 the one addiction, the one pet that I just don't want to let go
30:34 yet, that's the one.
30:43 I debated whether to put these words on the screen or not.
30:46 I went back and forth in my own mind.
30:50 And then I just got the conviction. "No, I'll put them up."
30:54 Let me share them with you. 100 years ago... "God's law reaches the feelings
30:59 and motives, as well as the outward acts. It reveals the secrets of the
31:05 heart, flashing light upon things before buried in darkness.
31:11 God knows every thought, every purpose, every plan, every motive."
31:20 And then here's the line. "The books of Heaven record the sins that would have been
31:26 committed had there been opportunity."
31:32 And I said to myself -- Seriously, I said to myself
31:36 this week, "I don't know. I'm not sure about that."
31:42 And then, just like that, the Sermon on the Mount,
31:46 the red-letter words of Jesus.
31:49 If a man looks on a woman with lustful eyes, he has broken already
31:59 the Seventh Commandment. True or false? It's true.
32:06 The sin that I would commit were I given the opportunity. But I don't.
32:14 "The books of Heaven record the sins that would have been committed had there been
32:19 that opportunity." Wow. I'm telling you,
32:25 it's the gospel truth. We killed Him, your sin and mine.
32:31 The words of Horatius Bonar, a 19th-century Scottish hymn writer --
32:37 "Twas I that shed the sacred blood. I nailed Him to the tree.
32:43 I crucified the Christ of God. I joined the mockery." "Desire of Ages."
32:51 Doesn't pull any punches. "Upon all" -- "Upon all rests the guilt
32:58 of crucifying the Son of God." I'm telling you, we killed Him. I did.
33:07 You did. "And I will pour out on the house of David
33:12 and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication.
33:16 They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for Him
33:22 as one mourns for an only child and grieve bitterly for Him as one grieves for
33:27 a firstborn son." Because that's the truth of Calvary.
33:34 But I'm grateful for that word "look." "They will look on me."
33:40 [ Inhales sharply ] Reminds me of a camel-haired, bushy-bearded
