00:01 Hi, campers!
00:02 Welcome to Bible Gems.
00:04 Today, we're going to learn about
00:06 Jacob and his twin Esau.
00:10 Julie, what are you doing?
00:12 I'm opening the program, like you do.
00:15 I don't sound like that.
00:17 Oh, hush, Julie.
00:18 I'm trying to tell the story.
00:20 No, no, no, I'm Tiara, you're Julie.
00:23 You made me lose my place.
00:25 What was I talking about?
00:26 Okay, Julie, give me the wig.
00:28 Only for your birthright.
00:30 Julie, it's not funny anymore. It's not funny anymore.
00:32 Stop that! Stop that!
00:34 Julie, give me the wig.
00:35 Julie, stop it!
00:37 It's my wig! Cut it out!
00:39 We are also going to learn about
00:41 how Jacob deceived his father, little hooligan.
00:46 Julie, you can't tell them the whole story.
00:47 You're going to give it away.
00:49 Julie, hush now, child.
00:51 I'm Tiara. Would you give me the wig?
00:53 What, no, no, no!
00:56 Stop it! Stop it! Oh!
00:58 Stay tuned to see what happens with Jacob and Esau.
01:01 Oh!
01:03 Bible Gems is up next.
01:05 Ah! Give me the wig!
01:28 Welcome to Bible Gems. Yes!
01:33 So we are going to have fun today.
01:35 I think... What?
01:37 Uncle Aaron, what's our story about today?
01:40 Today, we're going to learn about the dangers of lying
01:44 within the story of Jacob.
01:45 Ooh, that sounds exciting.
01:47 Let's get started with our memory verse.
01:50 Okay.
01:52 Lying lips, lying lips
01:56 Are abomination to the Lord
01:59 But they that deal truly
02:04 Are His delight
02:08 Lying lips, lying lips
02:12 Are abomination to the Lord
02:16 But they that deal truly
02:21 Are His delight
02:25 Proverbs 12:22
02:38 Right.
02:40 Thank you for sharing that memory verse song.
02:41 That was great.
02:42 Do you guys think that was a good song to learn?
02:45 Yes. Amen.
02:47 Hmm. It's time for our Bible Gem.
02:49 And that means we're missing something.
02:51 What could it be?
02:52 Well, I think we're missing our treasure chest
02:55 full of Bible Gems.
02:57 You're right, Uncle Aaron. He's right.
02:59 I'll go get that right now. Right.
03:01 Somebody better help her.
03:03 Oh my, it's big and heavy.
03:04 Can someone come help me?
03:06 Oh.
03:10 Oh, I love treasures. Do you like treasures?
03:12 Yes.
03:13 Look at this. It takes all of us to carry it.
03:16 Wow!
03:17 That's got to be some treasure.
03:20 All right, let's set it down carefully.
03:23 Oh.
03:25 I wonder what it could be!
03:28 Can we open it, Uncle Aaron?
03:30 Let's do it. Let's see.
03:31 You guys want to open it?
03:33 Go ahead.
03:34 Tell me what's inside.
03:35 Whoa!
03:37 Wow!
03:38 Look at all that.
03:40 All kinds of gems.
03:41 But, hey, whoa, whoa, whoa,
03:42 what's that scroll right there?
03:44 Wow.
03:46 Guys, everyone, look at the scroll.
03:47 This is the true treasure.
03:49 That's the biggest treasure of all.
03:50 This is the biggest one.
03:52 Is that the real Hebrew Bible?
03:54 Yeah, this is the Hebrew Scriptures.
03:57 All right.
03:58 Hey, who wants to hear a Bible story?
04:02 I do! That's right.
04:05 Here we have a story in the Hebrew Scriptures.
04:10 And there's a story that we're going to learn today
04:13 about lying.
04:16 There was a man by the name of Jacob.
04:19 In fact, Jacob's name means...
04:22 Does anyone know?
04:26 Jacob's name means deceiver.
04:29 A deceiver is someone who lies.
04:32 Now Jacob, was Jacob
04:35 the only son of Isaac?
04:38 Yes or no?
04:40 No. No.
04:41 Who can tell me the other brother's name?
04:45 Let's go with Zachary.
04:46 Esau. Esau.
04:48 That's exactly right.
04:50 Who knows
04:52 or who here knows what a twin is?
04:56 A twin.
04:57 So Esau and Jacob were actually twins.
05:01 Whoa!
05:02 That means that they are born at the exact same time
05:05 from their mom.
05:08 Now do all twins look exactly identical?
05:11 No. No.
05:13 There can be a twin
05:14 that one is a girl and one's a boy
05:17 or sometimes a boy and a boy and a girl and a girl,
05:19 but they can actually look a little bit different.
05:22 Jacob and Esau were twins, but they look quite different.
05:27 As they grew up, Rebecca, the mother,
05:33 loved one of her two sons more than the other.
05:36 Oh, that's not good, Uncle Aaron
05:38 Yeah.
05:39 Does that ever lead to anything good?
05:41 'Cause Jesus loves us all the same.
05:42 That's right.
05:43 Who believes that Jesus loves all of us the same?
05:46 That's right.
05:47 He has love for all the boys and the girls
05:49 and all the people in the world.
05:51 Now let me grab, over here,
05:54 we have some skin.
05:57 The Bible tells us that Esau was a really hairy guy,
06:02 just like this.
06:03 This is...
06:04 I believe this is some goatskin.
06:06 And this is some rugged stuff.
06:08 So you want to pass this around and get a feel.
06:10 This is what Esau felt like, right?
06:13 Wow, that was one hairy man.
06:16 Yes, Esau was tough.
06:19 Now one day,
06:22 when Esau was out hunting,
06:26 he came back from being out and hunting
06:29 and doing things and he was really tired.
06:32 And typically, when you get tired,
06:34 you also get hungry.
06:37 Amen.
06:38 Do any of you get hungry
06:39 when you're outside and playing?
06:41 That's right. Yes.
06:43 That's good.
06:44 And so he came back and Jacob was back at home
06:47 and he was cooking a pot of red lentils.
06:51 Yeah. Anybody here like lentils?
06:54 Yeah. So Jacob was a good cook.
06:56 You know why?
06:57 Because he was a mama's boy, right?
07:00 He spent time with his mom.
07:02 And he learned how to cook a mean red stew.
07:05 And Jacob came back from being out hunting
07:08 and he was tired and he was hungry
07:09 and he came and he said,
07:11 "Jacob, give me some of your food."
07:17 Who knows what Jacob said to him?
07:21 Okay, let's give the mic to Gavin.
07:25 I'll trade you some for your birthright.
07:28 What? Is that what he really said?
07:31 Man, what an unfair trade.
07:35 Just for a little pot of stew, he said, "Okay,
07:37 I'll give you the food
07:38 if you'll give me your birthright."
07:41 And to make matters even worse, guess who agreed to this deal.
07:46 Esau. Esau did.
07:48 Ah, Esau despised his birthright
07:51 and he traded it for a mere pot of stew.
07:53 Now a little bit later in the story
07:56 when Isaac, their dad was getting older
07:59 and older and older,
08:00 his eyesight began to get really blurry, right?
08:04 He could hardly see.
08:06 And Jacob and Rebecca, his mom,
08:09 because remember, Rebecca really loved Jacob,
08:12 they thought that they could take advantage
08:13 of that situation.
08:15 So Isaac said, "You know,
08:16 I'm getting old and I might be dying soon."
08:18 So he called in Jacob and he says,"
08:20 Hey, Jacob, I want to bless you.
08:22 And with the blessing,
08:23 I want to have a special meal with you.
08:25 So will you go out..." And Excuse me?
08:28 You guys are listening.
08:30 You guys, you must really read the Scriptures.
08:34 Esau was told to go out and to hunt
08:38 and get an animal to come back and to prepare a meal,
08:44 a special meal with his with his father there.
08:47 Now Rebecca was overhearing this conversation
08:52 that was taking place.
08:53 And she knew that, oh, Jacob was supposed to be
08:57 the one who gets the birthright.
08:59 And so she called Jacob aside and said,
09:01 "Hey, you're my favorite son
09:03 and we're going to come up with a plot
09:06 and we're going to deceive your father."
09:09 That never worked.
09:10 She would deceive her own husband?
09:12 Can you believe it?
09:13 Rebecca thought to deceive her own husband
09:16 and Jacob thought to deceive his own dad.
09:19 Rebecca cooked up the meal, and he said,
09:22 "Well, I can't go in because Esau's really hairy.
09:25 And I'm just, you know,
09:27 not that hairy and stuff like that.
09:29 I'm smooth-skinned, right?"
09:30 And so Rebecca said, "Oh, what you'll do
09:33 is you'll get some skin, some rough goatskin,"
09:36 or whatever, it was goatskin, actually,
09:38 and she told him, "Wrap it around,
09:41 wrap it around your arm and around your neck,
09:45 and then go in.
09:47 And so when your father checks to see if it's really Esau,
09:51 he'll come over and he'll feel,
09:52 'Hmm, yeah, I guess that is Esau.'"
09:55 So...
09:56 Did he wear Esau's clothes too
09:59 so that he smelled like hunting?
10:01 Yeah, he got that burly smell, that manly smell.
10:04 And he tried to...
10:06 I mean, they were twins after all, right?
10:08 He tried to do as best of a job
10:10 to be like his brother that he could.
10:11 And he went into that tent.
10:13 And he went right up to his dad and he said,
10:15 "I'm ready for the birthright."
10:17 What did Isaac do?
10:19 Oh, Isaac smelled something a little fishy.
10:24 He heard something a little fishy
10:25 'cause he said, "Hmm, this sounds like my son Jacob.
10:30 Is it really Esau?
10:31 Esau, is this really you?"
10:33 And what did Jacob say?
10:36 He lied straight out of his teeth.
10:39 And he said, "Oh, I'm Esau." He said, "Really?"
10:42 So he leaned over and he felt his arm
10:45 and he's like, "Hmm,
10:47 yeah, that must be him because this is so hairy."
10:50 And so then he gave him the blessing
10:52 and they had the meal together.
10:54 And the birthright was given,
10:56 and eventually, Esau did come back.
10:59 And do you think he was happy or mad
11:02 when he found out that Jacob took his birthright?
11:05 Oh, he was furious and he was sad too.
11:09 He begged his father,
11:10 "Please, please, please, bless me.
11:12 Bless me. Is there any blessing left?"
11:15 And unfortunately, although Isaac,
11:17 his father did bless him,
11:18 oh, it wasn't anything of the splendor
11:23 and the amount and the glory that was given to Jacob.
11:26 And so what ended up happening is Esau was so angry,
11:29 he chased his brother away.
11:33 Even though Jacob ran away, God still blessed him.
11:38 That's exactly right.
11:39 You see, friends, even though sometimes
11:42 we make mistakes, God still blesses
11:47 and works through our failures.
11:49 You know why?
11:50 That's how God loves us that
11:52 even when He died on the cross for us,
11:53 He did it for us anyways 'cause He loves us so much.
11:55 Wow, Olivia, what a good point.
11:57 That's exactly right.
11:59 God's love for us is so great
12:01 that He's extremely patient with us.
12:04 And He says, "I don't care
12:05 how long I have to work for them.
12:07 I don't care what it takes, but I'm going to work,
12:11 and I'm going to save, and I'm going to be there
12:13 for my children."
12:15 Beautiful lesson. Now we're running out of time.
12:18 So I'm going to summarize the story
12:19 and get moving really quickly.
12:21 God said, "Jacob, I want you to go back
12:24 to your family,
12:25 to Isaac, to Canaan, to your brother Esau."
12:28 He said, "Oh, really? Okay."
12:30 So they got together and they began to make
12:32 their way, that way.
12:33 But before they made their way, all the way back,
12:36 Jacob went away to pray.
12:38 And as Jacob was praying, what happened to him?
12:41 He was there praying,
12:42 and he was praying and all of a sudden...
12:44 Bam!
12:45 A mystery man came out of nowhere,
12:47 and he began to wrestle with him,
12:48 and he was wrestling and wrestling all night long.
12:53 And then finally as the day was breaking, this mystery man,
12:56 "Ah," he touched Jacob's hip,
12:59 and there Jacob realized he wasn't just wrestling
13:01 against a human, a man,
13:03 but he was wrestling against who?
13:05 God. God Himself.
13:07 And there he realized that God still loves me
13:11 and God changed his name from deceiver to what?
13:14 To Israel To Israel.
13:15 Because, friends,
13:17 we don't struggle against just man,
13:19 but if we struggle with man and God,
13:22 we can be one who prevails just like how Jacob did.
13:25 Who wants to be a prevailer, just like how Jacob did
13:28 and he became Israel?
13:30 Amen.
13:32 That's all the time we have for now.
13:34 See you again on Bible Gems.
13:37 Good job, kids.
