00:02 Hey, campers, welcome to Bible Gems.
00:05 Today, we're gonna be learning about a man named Gideon
00:07 and how he fought an entire army with God's help.
00:10 Isn't that right, Julie?
00:12 Julie? Attack!
00:13 No, no, Julie not yet!
00:15 Oops, sorry.
00:17 Ooh, the Midianites are coming.
00:19 Bible Gems is up next.
00:45 Welcome, boys and girls to Bible Gems.
00:49 Come and join us.
00:50 We have a real gem today.
00:52 You won't wanna miss it. Come on.
00:58 Aunty Linda, I found the most amazing
00:59 Bible Gem ever.
01:01 We got this from the...
01:02 Oh, Uncle Aron, Uncle Aron look.
01:04 Oh boy!
01:05 Can you tell us the story please?
01:06 Oh, that's a great Bible gem.
01:08 Hey, that goes along with our song today.
01:12 Miss Jo Dee, teach us our song, now we've got a Bible Gem.
01:15 Yeah, are you excited, boys and girls?
01:17 Yes!
01:20 If God be for us
01:23 Who can be against us
01:26 Romans 8:31
01:30 If God be for us
01:33 Who can be against us
01:36 Romans 8:31
01:42 That's awesome.
01:44 Well, what about that story, Uncle Aron?
01:47 All right.
01:48 The story we're gonna learn about today is a man
01:51 who is really scared.
01:54 Anyone here ever been scared before?
01:56 Richard, yeah,
01:57 I've been scared before too but,
02:00 over time, once God made Himself known to this man,
02:04 he became more and more and more courageous.
02:07 The man's name was Gideon.
02:10 Before I go into the story of Gideon,
02:12 let me tell you about the time period
02:14 that he was living in.
02:15 It was the time period in the Bible called
02:17 the period of the Judges.
02:19 During the time of the Judges,
02:22 there wasn't a king ruling over Israel.
02:24 And often what took place was that
02:26 there were foreign enemies of Israel
02:29 and they would come in
02:30 and they would oppress the people of God.
02:32 And this one time, the Midianites came in,
02:35 and for seven years
02:37 the Israelites were held in bondage.
02:40 They were being oppressed by the Midianites,
02:43 but eventually the children of Israel
02:45 got so tired of being oppressed
02:47 by the Midianites that they cried out to God.
02:49 They said, "God, deliver us from the Midianites."
02:52 Anyone here ever cried out to God for help before?
02:56 Yeah, that's what we need to do in our time of need.
02:58 So the Israelites cried out to God and said,
03:00 "God, help us."
03:02 And God heard their cry,
03:04 and He sent a prophet to tell them,
03:06 that they would be delivered.
03:08 So God came and He sent an angel
03:11 to a man named Gideon, and there was Gideon.
03:15 And guess what Gideon was doing?
03:17 He was hiding.
03:19 He was scared of the Midianites
03:21 and he was away at his father's winepress
03:24 and he was in secret
03:26 because he was afraid of the Midianites.
03:28 And there comes the angel of Lord
03:30 came right to Gideon and said,
03:32 "Gideon, you're a mighty man of valor,
03:34 and I'm gonna use you to deliver the Israelites."
03:38 Was Gideon ready to go right then and there?
03:42 No! He said, "Really?
03:45 Me?
03:46 I'm the least in all of my clan,
03:49 all of my, in my family,
03:50 I'm the smallest, I'm the littlest.
03:52 I can't do that!"
03:54 But God reminded him that He was with him.
03:57 And if God is with us, that's all that matters, right?
04:02 If God is with us, who can be against us?
04:04 So Gideon said, "Okay, God,
04:06 I'm gonna come and I'm gonna make you
04:08 an offering so I know it's you."
04:10 And so Gideon brought God an offering and boom,
04:13 it's set on fire right in front of him.
04:15 And he said, "Whoa, God really must be with me."
04:19 Then God said, "Yep, it really is Me.
04:21 Now, what I want you to do
04:23 before I use you to deliver My people,
04:26 I need you to go and to tear down
04:29 the altars of Baal
04:31 that your father has in his front yard."
04:35 "Okay.
04:36 But if I tear it down, all the people in the city
04:39 are gonna wanna kill me."
04:41 God said, "You gotta do it,
04:43 because before I can be fully with you,
04:45 you need to get rid off
04:47 of all of the idols in your life.
04:49 So Gideon, even though he was beginning
04:52 to step forward with courage with God,
04:54 was a little bit afraid,
04:56 and instead of going out in the middle of the day,
04:58 he went at night time
05:00 and he went to the altar of Baal,
05:03 and in the middle of the night,
05:04 he came and he tore it down, and he ripped it apart
05:08 and then he set up an altars to the Lord,
05:11 right on the same place.
05:13 He set it up, and he built it and there
05:16 they began to worship God but,
05:19 where the other people
05:20 in the town happy that their altar to Baal
05:22 was torn down?
05:24 No! No!
05:25 And so they came and they said, "Whoa, who tore down our altar?
05:29 Who did it?"
05:30 And someone said, "I heard it was Gideon."
05:32 They said, "Oh, where's Gideon?
05:34 They went looking through, where's Gideon?
05:35 We're gonna kill him."
05:37 But then, Gideon's dad stepped up and said "What?
05:40 You're gonna defend Baal?
05:43 Baal was the one whose altar was destroyed.
05:45 Let Baal defend himself."
05:47 And they said, "Well, that makes a lot of sense.
05:49 If our God is really that powerful,
05:51 we should let him defend himself."
05:54 And so they gave Gideon a nickname.
05:56 Who knows the nickname that they gave to Gideon?
05:59 Anyone here? No?
06:01 They named him "Jerubbaal"
06:05 which means "Let Baal defend himself."
06:08 It was a name in honor to the glory of God.
06:11 So there was, Gideon said, "Wow, God is really with me."
06:15 Now, was Gideon ready to go right then and there?
06:19 No, not yet.
06:20 He's still needed to make sure that
06:22 God is with him
06:23 and so what Gideon did is he went,
06:25 and he grabbed the fleece.
06:27 He grabbed the fleece and he said,
06:28 "Okay God, I'm gonna put it on the ground here
06:32 and if in the morning, the fleece is wet,
06:37 well then I'll know that you're with me."
06:40 And he went to bed that night and he woke up in the morning
06:43 and guess what happened, boys and girls?
06:46 The fleece was soaking wet and so he said, "Oh!
06:48 Okay God must be with me."
06:51 Was he ready to go then?
06:52 No! No!
06:54 He said, "Okay God, don't be mad at me,
06:57 but I wanna give one more test.
06:59 I wanna put the fleece out again but this time,
07:01 the way I'll know you're with me
07:03 is if the fleece is dry
07:04 and the ground around it is wet."
07:06 So there he went, and he put out the fleece
07:09 and he went to bed that night.
07:13 And he woke up in the morning and he came back out
07:15 to the fleece and guess what?
07:17 The ground was wet but the fleece was dry.
07:23 And he said, "Whoa, God is really with me.
07:26 Okay, I think I'm almost ready to go."
07:30 So God came and He told him.
07:31 He said, "Okay, there's 32,000 of you
07:36 and a 120,000 Midianites.
07:40 And Gideon said, "Well,
07:41 the odds are looking a little bit
07:42 in the favor of the Midianites."
07:45 And God said, "Well, I don't wanna use 32,000.
07:50 I wanna use less."
07:51 And so he told Gideon to say anyone
07:54 who is afraid that they can go home.
07:57 And so Gideon went away,
07:58 "If you're afraid, you get to go home."
08:00 And how many went home?
08:01 Twenty two thousand. That's right.
08:04 Twenty two thousand went home and they were afraid.
08:06 So Gideon was left with how many?
08:08 Ten thousand. Ten thousand.
08:10 And he's like, wow, God just took, you know,
08:13 two-thirds of my troops.
08:15 Well, I hope He doesn't take anymore,
08:16 10,000 versus 120,000, but was God done?
08:21 No. Dwindling down He said no.
08:23 He said "All right, the next test
08:24 I want you to do is I want you to bring your army,
08:27 bring them to the water, bring them to the water
08:31 and have them get a drink of water."
08:33 Now, there was two groups of people.
08:35 Some of them came to the water,
08:37 and what did they do when they came to the water?
08:40 They stuck their face in it.
08:41 They were so used to bowing down
08:43 to idols that they bowed all way down
08:45 to the river instead.
08:47 And they just slurped up that water.
08:49 But, there were some that just got on their knees,
08:53 and they got their hands,
08:55 and they dipped their hands into the water,
08:57 and they kept their head up, and they lapped it,
09:00 they drank it out of their hands.
09:02 And God said, "All right, Gideon.
09:05 This is what I want you to do.
09:06 Only bring with you in the battle,
09:09 those who stayed on their knees and drank out of their hands.
09:13 All of those who stuck their face in the water,
09:16 tell them to go home.
09:18 And how many men were left with Gideon?
09:21 Three hundred. Whoa, only 300?
09:25 300 versus 120,000!
09:31 Man, at this rate, God better do a miracle.
09:35 And what was God about to do? A miracle.
09:39 And so, Gideon, he said,
09:41 "Okay, I'm still little bit nervous
09:43 but I have the confidence that God is with me."
09:46 And as he was thinking things through,
09:48 God came to him and said,
09:49 "Okay, Gideon, this is what I want you to do.
09:52 I want you to go down into the valley
09:55 where the Midianites are staying,
09:58 and I will give you courage when you go down.
10:00 But if you are still a little bit afraid,
10:02 you can bring with you your servant.
10:04 And so Gideon,
10:06 he was still a little bit afraid
10:07 and so he brought with him his servant,
10:10 and he got up and he went to spy on the Midianites.
10:12 Now, let's go together.
10:14 The Midianites are right down there in the valley.
10:17 Let's quietly let's go and sneak over
10:20 and see if we can overhear something going on
10:23 with the Midianites.
10:24 Let's go guys.
10:26 Don't get too close, they might wake up, okay.
10:29 So there they were
10:30 and they overheard a conversation.
10:35 "Hey, wake up.
10:40 I had an awful dream.
10:43 You know what it was?" "What?"
10:45 "I dreamt a barley loaf rolled down the hill
10:51 and hit our tent
10:52 and destroyed it and knocked it down.
10:55 What do you think it means?"
10:56 "It means that Gideon is going to win the battle."
10:59 "Oh, no!
11:02 Well, we better get our swords and get ready for battle."
11:08 Once Gideon heard this,
11:09 he quietly went back to the camp
11:11 while worshiping God.
11:13 He went back to the camp, and he said, Oh!
11:16 He got his 300 men together and he said,
11:19 "Guys, okay, God is with us.
11:21 And this very night,
11:23 we're gonna defeat the Midianites."
11:24 So he gave them all a lamp.
11:27 He gave them all a lamp into their hands
11:29 and he gave them a clay pitcher, jug there.
11:33 And then they all had trumpets, and they went out
11:36 and they split up in the third
11:38 so a 100 went over there,
11:39 a 100 went over there and a 100 were here.
11:42 And they went all around the valley.
11:45 And altogether, right before they attacked,
11:50 they cried out.
11:52 The trumpets began to blare and they cried out,
11:57 "The Sword of the Lord and of Gideon."
12:00 The Sword of the Lord and of Gideon.
12:02 The Sword of the Lord and of Gideon.
12:05 The Sword of the Lord and of Gideon.
12:09 And then, there was mayhem in the camp
12:12 and something began to happen.
12:15 "I can't see anything, it's pitch black!"
12:17 "I can't either." "Can you see anything?"
12:18 "No." "They must be coming.
12:20 I heard a terrible yell. Let's fight them."
12:27 And God began to perform a miracle.
12:30 All of the Midianites began to slay one another!
12:34 They didn't know
12:35 who the enemy was and they just...
12:37 It was chaotic
12:38 and they were stabbing each other
12:39 and they didn't know what was going on.
12:41 And then, the army of 300 went into the camp,
12:45 and they slew how many?
12:48 All of them, all the 120,000.
12:51 And God defeated the Midianites and delivered the Israelites.
12:57 Now, boys and girls, you may be scared,
13:00 you maybe a little person with not a lot of strength,
13:04 but God knows that if He comes
13:07 and He fights your battle for you,
13:08 that you don't need to be afraid of anyone of anything.
13:12 Do you boys and girls want to have God on your side?
13:15 Yes!
13:16 Because if God is with us, who can be against us?
13:21 Boys and girls, at home, I hope the same thing for you
13:24 that you bring God into your life,
13:25 and let Him defeat your enemies for you.
13:29 God is amazing, boys and girls.
13:31 Remember to share your Bibles
13:33 and you will find so many precious gems.
13:37 Well, come back and see us next time.
13:40 Bye, boys and girls!
13:41 Bye!
