00:44 Canada.
00:44 Thank you for joining us.
00:46 Like Jonah in the Bible, our
00:47 special guest, Troy Guderyan,
00:50 found himself running from God.
00:52 >> However, he found out that he
00:54 was not able to outrun God's
00:57 love for him.
00:59 Pastor Troy, welcome to It Is
01:01 Written Canada.
01:03 >> Thank you for having me.
01:05 [MIKE] Troy, tell us a little
01:06 bit about yourself, where you're
01:08 from, your family, their
01:10 influence in your life.
01:12 >> So I grew up in a small town,
01:15 Hudson Bay, which is about four
01:17 and a half hours,
01:19 a little, I guess, over four
01:21 hours northeast of Regina.
01:23 And...
01:26 ...from Hudson Bay, the farm
01:28 that we grew up on was just
01:29 south of Hudson Bay, ten miles
01:31 or so.
01:32 So it was just a ten minute
01:33 drive into town.
01:34 But...
01:36 ...yeah, it was-- I grew up as a
01:39 farm kid and loved the outdoors,
01:42 fishing, hunting.
01:44 In fact, like, after school, I
01:46 would jump on the quad and I
01:48 would drive over to a buddy's
01:50 house, and we would be in the
01:51 bush till like 10:00 at night.
01:53 And we ended up spending a night
01:55 in the bush one time.
01:56 It was just fun things, I guess,
01:58 for-- just things that I enjoyed
02:01 growing up.
02:03 You know, as my family was, you
02:08 know, they were religious and
02:10 Seventh-day Adventist, I grew up
02:11 in an Adventist home.
02:13 And so, you know, we always went
02:15 to church on Sabbath.
02:16 There wasn't a question of, you
02:18 know, what were we gonna do on
02:19 Saturday, you know, we knew that
02:21 we were going to church.
02:22 That's just what we did.
02:24 So obviously, coming from a
02:27 small town and having just
02:29 relatives in the church, you
02:31 know, and to come to the age of
02:33 finding, you know, a life
02:34 partner, you know, where do you
02:37 go when there's a church full of
02:39 cousins, right?
02:40 So you're not going to marry
02:42 your cousin.
02:43 Obviously, I knew that.
02:45 So fortunately, there was a girl
02:46 that had moved away
02:48 some years prior.
02:50 She had moved back to Hudson Bay
02:53 and come to high school.
02:56 And I was in my 12th grade and
02:58 she was in grade 11 and...
03:00 And so this girl was actually a
03:03 friend of my, one of my best
03:05 friends, right?
03:06 And so when she'd come to town,
03:09 he phoned her up and said, "Hey,
03:11 you know, do you wanna get
03:12 together, do something?"
03:13 And I happened to be actually
03:15 with my buddy at the time.
03:16 And anyways, we spent the
03:18 afternoon together and, you
03:21 know, we ended up hitting it off
03:23 and today she's my wife.
03:24 And so, yeah.
03:25 So it turned out well.
03:28 [RENÉ] So you were high school
03:29 sweethearts?
03:30 >> Yes, we are high school
03:31 sweethearts.
03:33 >> So, Troy, you mentioned that
03:35 you grew up in the church.
03:37 Did it become your faith and did
03:41 you understand why you were
03:44 going to church?
03:46 [TROY] You know, I just knew,
03:49 like I said, every Saturday,
03:51 you know, we'd just, we'd go to
03:52 church.
03:53 And obviously growing up and,
03:55 you know, as a kid, you learn
03:56 the Bible stories.
03:58 And so, I mean,
04:00 you know the Bible, you know
04:02 what it teaches, you know the
04:03 principles of it, but, you know,
04:07 you don't really embrace it as
04:09 your own and...
04:10 And it wasn't until we had an
04:13 evangelist come to Hudson Bay,
04:15 Victor Gill I believe it was,
04:17 and he did a Revelation seminar.
04:21 So that's where I learned about
04:23 the Lamb of God and, you know,
04:25 His substitutionary sacrifice
04:27 for us.
04:29 And actually, that was when I
04:31 decided to give my life to the
04:32 Lord through baptism and I was,
04:34 I believe I was 17 or 18, I
04:36 would have to do the math,
04:38 but yeah.
04:40 That's when it became real to me
04:42 and I really understood what God
04:44 actually did for me by, you
04:46 know, His sacrifice on the
04:47 cross.
04:48 And it was at that moment that
04:50 I decided to give my life
04:52 to the Lord.
04:54 >> So, Troy, once you were
04:55 baptized, did you feel like God
04:57 had a plan for your life?
04:59 >> You know, I knew God had a
05:02 plan for my life because God has
05:03 a plan for everyone's life, but
05:06 I didn't know what that was.
05:07 And my buddy was actually
05:09 enrolling in Millwright
05:12 Industrial Mechanics.
05:14 And so I thought, "Hey, why not?
05:16 I'll try that out too."
05:17 Because I liked working with my
05:19 hands and doing things, so...
05:21 So I enrolled in Millwright
05:23 School and I enjoyed it.
05:26 We did welding and machining.
05:29 So we started the machine shop
05:31 and being 21 years old, you
05:34 know, we didn't have any money.
05:36 And so my dad ended up cosigning
05:40 for the loans and, you know, he
05:42 put up some land for collateral
05:43 and obviously he believed in
05:45 what we were doing.
05:46 I hired my cousin to work
05:48 for me.
05:48 He was he was a second year
05:50 machinist so he had a little bit
05:51 more experience machining than I
05:53 did just being at Millwright.
05:54 And so we were working on our
05:59 first few jobs, we were excited,
06:01 you know, to get going.
06:02 Things were not going, you know,
06:04 obviously well, as you start a
06:05 business, it takes time to get
06:07 your feet on the ground.
06:09 >> So just before you and
06:11 Lynnette got married, you had
06:13 this machine shop in Hudson Bay
06:16 that you were running and your
06:17 cousin was helping you.
06:18 But then something unexpected
06:21 happened.
06:22 Can you tell us about that?
06:24 >> We started working on these
06:27 hydraulic cylinders, was a piece
06:29 of equipment from my cousin's
06:31 skidder, and...
06:34 ...taking apart these hydraulic
06:35 cylinders, you know, sometimes
06:37 they can come apart easy and
06:39 sometimes they can, you know,
06:41 be a little bit more difficult.
06:44 I took apart the first hydraulic
06:46 cylinder by using
06:47 compressed air.
06:48 And I give it the shot of air, I
06:51 had all the retaining rings off
06:53 and the cylinder just, it come
06:54 out in my hand, nice and slick.
06:57 And I thought, this was
06:58 quite easy.
06:59 So I tried the second cylinder
07:01 and the second cylinder, it's
07:04 identical cylinders, and when I
07:06 went to to take it apart, the
07:08 shaft extended and it come to
07:10 the end where the gland is in
07:11 the cylinder.
07:12 But when I give it a shot of
07:13 air, it wasn't coming.
07:15 And so I thought, "Okay, a
07:16 little bit more air, needs a
07:17 little bit more air," and so you
07:18 continue to give it air.
07:20 And pretty soon, you know, this
07:23 cylinder has got 95 pounds of
07:26 air in it and it was like a
07:27 six-inch cylinder.
07:28 And so if you multiply that out,
07:30 it's like 2,600 pounds per
07:32 square inch of force that comes
07:35 out of that cylinder.
07:38 Well, that cylinder finally gave
07:42 way and when it did it, it hit
07:44 me in the stomach.
07:46 And so, you know, it pushed
07:49 everything up into my chest
07:50 cavity, you know, I fell to one
07:53 knee, I got up, and my cousin
07:56 looked at me and he said, "Do we
07:58 have to go to the hospital?"
07:59 And I said, "No, just let me
08:00 catch my breath."
08:01 And as I was catching my breath,
08:03 I realized that, you know what,
08:05 there's something seriously
08:06 wrong.
08:07 >> There was a lot of pressure
08:08 there.
08:09 It was like a cannonball hitting
08:10 you in the stomach.
08:11 [TROY] Yeah, like...
08:12 >> Throwing everything up.
08:13 But you, I mean, you're feeling
08:15 this and a second before you're,
08:18 everything's fine.
08:19 And so after it hits you, it
08:21 hits you so quickly you don't
08:22 even...
08:22 Hey, no passage of time.
08:24 You're fine.
08:25 But it wasn't just shortness
08:27 of breath.
08:28 [TROY] No, it wasn't.
08:29 In fact, there was quite a bit
08:31 of internal damage done and we
08:33 didn't realize that until I got
08:35 to the hospital and they, you
08:37 know, they cut my coveralls off
08:39 and they prepped me to fly out
08:41 to Saskatoon.
08:43 And when I flew out to
08:44 Saskatoon, when I arrived to
08:46 Saskatoon, my mom and my aunt
08:48 were waiting at the hospital
08:49 for me.
08:50 And, you know, as I was flying,
08:54 I could-- I noticed my stomach,
08:55 you know, it just kept getting
08:56 larger and larger and so I knew
08:59 something was really wrong.
09:00 And, you know, when you're
09:01 laying there in that state,
09:02 you're wondering, you know,
09:04 obviously you're praying, you
09:05 know, you know, you don't know
09:06 what's going on and, you know,
09:08 the thought crossed my mind, you
09:10 know, "What am I doing?" right?
09:13 "Is this really God's plan for
09:15 my life?" you know, start a
09:16 machine shop.
09:18 And you know, I questioned
09:20 myself, you know, "Am I running
09:22 from God?"
09:23 But the funny thing is we,
09:25 sometimes we just continue doing
09:27 what we're doing because
09:30 it's easy, right?
09:31 And so we ended up getting to
09:34 the hospital.
09:36 My mom and aunt were waiting
09:37 there and they rushed me in and
09:39 prepped me for surgery.
09:41 And I remember the last thing
09:43 that the doctor told me, he said
09:45 that, "You might come out with a
09:48 bag, colostomy."
09:50 So I wasn't in the situation
09:55 to argue with him.
09:56 So I come out of surgery.
09:59 When I come out of surgery,
10:01 praise God, I didn't have a bag
10:03 and everything was well, I, you
10:06 know, my stomach was stapled, I
10:08 can't remember 40 some staples
10:10 and they just cut me,
10:13 went around my bellybutton and,
10:14 you know, cut me wide open.
10:15 They pulled everything out,
10:17 cleaned it up, put it back in.
10:18 Everything-- they couldn't have
10:20 done a better job, but as I was
10:25 laying in bed, I was quite-- I
10:28 never had an accident like this
10:29 before, so I didn't know what to
10:31 expect for, you know, the amount
10:32 of pain that one would be in
10:34 in a situation like this.
10:36 And so I was in quite a bit of
10:38 pain and they had given a button
10:41 to push as soon as you needed
10:43 the pain medication and so I was
10:45 pushing it and nothing was
10:47 really helping.
10:48 The only thing that was kind of
10:50 odd was I was starting to get
10:52 itchy and...
10:55 ...my back especially.
10:57 And so I would ask Lynette,
10:59 "Lynette, can you scratch
11:00 my back?"
11:00 And so she was scratching my
11:02 back so hard that it was just
11:04 leaving welts on my back and...
11:07 But it felt so good, like when
11:08 she scratched, but it was just
11:10 welting my back.
11:11 And so she was questioning the
11:15 doctors, the nurses, like, "Do
11:17 you think that he could be
11:18 allergic to the medication?"
11:20 Like, I was allergic to
11:21 penicillin when I was young,
11:23 right, and so she was asking
11:25 about the morphine medication.
11:28 And they didn't think that it
11:30 was an issue.
11:31 And so she was getting hungry
11:34 and so she jumped in the
11:36 elevator and she went down to
11:38 the cafeteria to get a
11:39 bite to eat.
11:40 And as she was in the elevator,
11:46 she heard over the intercom...
11:49 [] “Code blue, room 305.
11:51 All doctors to the E.R.”
11:52 [TROY] And she said she knew
11:54 right away that it had to have
11:56 been me.
11:57 And so she come right back up to
11:59 the room.
12:00 And they were trying to get her
12:01 into a quiet room, and she
12:04 wasn't having that.
12:05 She said, "No, I know what
12:06 happens in the quiet room."
12:07 And so she talked her way into
12:10 the room.
12:11 And so she was able to get into
12:12 the room and she-- I don't-- I
12:14 didn't know this, she was
12:16 rubbing my foot and she's, you
12:18 know, calling my name and I'm,
12:21 she said I'm-- I was staring
12:22 right through her.
12:24 It turns out that I was allergic
12:26 to the morphine and my body
12:28 started shutting down.
12:30 And so once Lynette got back
12:33 into the room and they gave me a
12:37 shot of adrenaline and I
12:39 remember like it was yesterday,
12:41 I sat up in bed and I thought I
12:45 was dreaming.
12:46 You know, there was a light, you
12:47 know, they had the light in my
12:48 face and I sat up and I looked
12:51 out and I saw Lynette surrounded
12:54 by, you know, a few nurses and
12:55 I, and I'm like, "Oh," I said to
12:57 myself, "Oh, I must be
12:57 dreaming."
12:58 And I just laid right back.
13:03 I went back to sleep.
13:05 There was no audio sound, I,
13:07 like I say, I could just see her
13:08 there and I was happy and I laid
13:11 back down.
13:12 The second shot of adrenaline
13:14 that they gave me,
13:15 my audio came back.
13:17 And so when I opened my eyes,
13:20 you know, they had the light in
13:21 my face and I started hearing
13:23 what they were saying and they
13:24 were they were saying, you know,
13:25 I stopped breathing and, you
13:27 know, so they started going
13:28 through all the things that they
13:30 were doing.
13:31 And I realized at that moment
13:33 that they were actually talking
13:34 about me.
13:36 And so it was at that moment
13:39 that I'm like, I have to tell
13:40 myself to keep breathing, right?
13:42 I realized the situation and how
13:44 severe it was and how close to
13:47 death I was.
13:49 I said a short prayer to the
13:51 Lord and I just said, "Lord, if
13:54 You have something else in mind
13:56 for me, you know, show me
13:59 what that is."
14:00 But I said to Him, I said, "If
14:03 You save my life," basically a
14:06 second chance, right?
14:08 "If You save my life, I will go
14:10 wherever You want me to go.
14:11 I will do whatever You want me
14:12 to do."
14:14 We were planning on getting
14:15 married in two months, and so
14:18 you know what?
14:19 The Lord was good.
14:20 He answered my prayer.
14:22 I didn't realize it at the time,
14:24 but it was eight days later I
14:26 was out of the hospital.
14:28 We went to Taco Time and I got
14:31 the hot sauce and tested out how
14:33 well the doctor did on my
14:34 stomach and everything was 100%.
14:37 And so we returned back to
14:39 Hudson Bay and, you know, once I
14:42 had recovered from the injury,
14:45 back working at the shop.
14:46 And it was three and a half
14:49 years later that I just felt
14:51 that, you know, maybe there's
14:53 something else the Lord
14:54 has for me.
14:55 And I said to Lynette, you know,
14:58 "I just feel like the Lord maybe
14:59 is calling us into the
15:00 ministry."
15:02 So we...
15:04 ...packed up our vehicle and
15:06 I don't even know what the
15:07 circumstance was, but we ended
15:08 up out it at Burman, er it was
15:10 CUC at the time.
15:12 We took a trip out to CUC and
15:14 we toured the campus and, you
15:16 know, everything looked great
15:17 and we started looking for
15:18 housing and housing was through
15:20 the roof.
15:21 And so we turned around and we
15:23 went back to Hudson Bay and
15:25 continued on our life machining
15:26 and welding and, you know,
15:28 life as usual.
15:31 It was probably close to seven
15:34 years and...
15:38 ...you know, I felt that feeling
15:40 again, but it wasn't until there
15:42 was a few signs that things were
15:44 happening.
15:45 >> Troy, you were looking for a
15:47 sign from God, and that's
15:48 understandable.
15:50 I mean, Gideon looked for a
15:51 sign, he asked God for a sign.
15:52 You were looking for a sign, you
15:54 didn't really know you were
15:55 looking for a sign, but you
15:56 felt like you were running from
15:57 God, but He sent you three signs
16:00 and they were obvious to you.
16:01 Tell us about those three signs.
16:03 >> Yeah.
16:04 You know, like you say, I didn't
16:06 realize that we were actually
16:08 looking for three signs until
16:10 things started happening.
16:12 The first thing that happened to
16:14 me was I was working in the
16:17 industry and there was a heavy
16:20 door that had to get put back up
16:22 into place after working on this
16:24 piece of equipment.
16:26 And as I was, we were putting
16:29 this door up, I went to reach
16:32 in and pull a chain out of this
16:35 door, and the piece of equipment
16:38 had slipped and the door
16:41 slammed shut and it...
16:44 ...it actually crushed
16:45 this finger.
16:46 I didn't realize, I pulled my
16:48 hand out and my finger was
16:51 hanging there, my bone sticking
16:52 out, and I stuck my hand back in
16:55 the glove and I made my way to
16:57 the parking lot, drove myself to
16:58 the hospital.
17:00 And, you know, we were sent to
17:02 Saskatoon once again and, you
17:05 know, they they repaired
17:06 my finger.
17:08 So that was sign number one.
17:10 The second thing that happened
17:11 was it wasn't that long after.
17:14 In fact, my finger wasn't even
17:16 healed up.
17:17 I-- we had it in gauze and it
17:20 was just a big ball on the end
17:22 of my finger.
17:24 I had a pin in my finger that
17:28 went to the, about the middle of
17:29 my hand.
17:31 And I was doing some, just a
17:34 small job, and I was bending
17:38 some pieces of rebar and I had a
17:41 square tubing locked in the vise
17:44 and I would stick the rebar in
17:45 and I had another piece of
17:46 square tubing that I would slide
17:47 over and I would just bend
17:49 basically hooks, right?
17:51 And so I had 80 of these hooks
17:53 to do and I was going through
17:55 them and I got 60 some of them
17:57 done and didn't realize, but the
18:00 piece in the vise was working
18:01 loose, working itself loose.
18:03 And I think probably I wasn't
18:04 able to tighten the vise enough
18:06 because of my hand was still
18:08 damaged.
18:09 And when I was doing a bend and
18:13 giving it the final, you know,
18:16 push, the whole thing popped out
18:19 of the vise and it ended up
18:22 hitting me right in the mouth.
18:24 Now, it didn't, like it didn't

18:27 I must have been smiling as I
18:28 was working, I don't know, but

18:43 a lot of damage and it...
18:45 And you know, just hard enough
18:47 just to break both of those
18:48 teeth.
18:49 And so we found ourselves
18:50 driving to Swan River, Manitoba,
18:53 to get, you know, my teeth root
18:55 canal-ed.
18:56 And on the way there, you know,
18:58 I'm talking with Lynette and,
19:00 you know, we're saying to

19:35 But we had just gotten into bed
19:37 and I was pulling my hand out

19:41 the bed and the pin and my
19:44 finger had a little hook on the

21:14 and sometimes we should just,

21:24 >> So, Pastor Troy, you've been

21:31 Can you tell us what has been
21:33 the most toughest thing in the

22:30 And I got to Melville, we fueled
22:33 up with fuel and I phoned my

22:57 He was waiting for them and the

23:02 him and landed on her and
23:06 it took her life and...
23:08 So he asked me to do the
23:12 service and that was...
23:16 ...that was the toughest thing
23:17 I had to do.
23:21 Yeah.
23:26 But the thing that was really
23:31 joyful, the best thing that I've
23:34 done so far and probably will
