00:42 >> Hello and welcome to It Is
00:44 Written Canada.
00:45 Thank you for joining us.
00:47 Many years ago, both Helen
00:50 Northcott and Linda Butt had
00:52 their lives transformed by the
00:54 truths of the Bible and watching
00:56 It Is Written.
00:57 >> They studied the Bible study
00:59 guides diligently and they gave
01:02 their hearts to the Lord and
01:04 were baptized, but they didn't
01:05 stop there.
01:06 They felt compelled to dedicate
01:09 their lives to serving God as
01:11 Bible workers and to serving
01:13 people wherever God led them.
01:16 >> Our guests on It Is Written
01:18 Canada today are both trained
01:20 Bible workers who have taught
01:21 men and women, boys and girls,
01:24 the life-giving truths of the
01:26 Bible and led them to put their
01:28 faith in Jesus as their Lord
01:31 and Saviour.
01:33 Helen and Linda, welcome to
01:36 It Is Written Canada.
01:38 >> Thank you, it's really a
01:39 pleasure to be here.
01:41 >> So, Linda, you and Helen have
01:44 been friends for quite some
01:46 time, both Bible workers.
01:49 Can you tell us where you met
01:52 and what kind of outreach you've
01:53 done together?
01:55 >> Okay.
01:55 Well, we met at Hope Camp
01:57 Meeting in BC and we've been
02:00 friends for probably about 40
02:01 years and we've done outreach in
02:04 the community, door-to-door
02:05 Bible studies, we've done
02:06 vegetarian cooking schools
02:08 together, and we endeavoured to
02:11 begin a branch Sabbath School in
02:14 Port Perry, and we had
02:18 vegetarian demonstrations, we
02:20 had Daniel seminars, we had a
02:23 church...
02:26 ...church services going and
02:29 we've really enjoyed doing
02:31 door-to-door and visiting people
02:32 in the community and we tried to
02:34 find out what their interests
02:35 were to see, you know, where
02:38 we could do programs, like with
02:40 spiritual things or vegetarian
02:42 healthy things, we tried to find
02:44 out what they were interested
02:45 in doing.
02:46 >> So you've really done some
02:48 work.
02:49 Being a Bible worker has to be a
02:50 hard work thing.
02:51 I know Jesus said to His
02:53 disciples, "The harvest truly is
02:56 great, but the labourers are
02:57 few," and then He says,
02:59 "Therefore pray the Lord of the
03:01 harvest to send out labourers
03:03 into His harvest."
03:04 That's something that I pray for
03:07 on a daily basis is that men and
03:10 women, women like yourselves,
03:11 will become Bible workers.
03:13 So what does it take to be a
03:15 good Bible worker?
03:18 >> I think a good Bible worker
03:19 has to really believe in the
03:21 Bible and love the Bible, love
03:24 studying the Bible and has a
03:27 strong belief that there's other
03:29 people out there that really
03:31 would like to study the Bible.
03:33 And so that inspires you to go
03:35 out and find them.
03:37 And it's only the Holy Spirit
03:39 that inspires people to want to
03:43 know spiritual things and to
03:45 study the Bible.
03:46 And so we've really depended on
03:48 the Holy Spirit to sort of bring
03:50 us together, right?
03:51 [LINDA] It takes prayer, a lot
03:53 of prayer, a lot of
03:53 perseverance, there's a lot of
03:55 obstacles out there.
03:56 And I think if you have a solid
03:59 relationship with Christ and a
04:02 real desire to share the truth
04:04 with others, I believe that this
04:06 is very important, you have to
04:08 be in love with Jesus yourself
04:11 and love people so that you can
04:13 share with them.
04:15 [MIKE] So both of you have
04:17 a love for the Bible,
04:19 thatbvious.
04:20 Where did it start for you?
04:22 >> Well, when I started
04:24 studying, I first went to the
04:27 Baptist church, my mother sent
04:28 me to the Baptist church because
04:31 it was the closest one to us, it
04:32 was five minutes away.
04:34 And I really enjoyed going there
04:36 because we learned about Jesus
04:39 and we learned about the Bible
04:40 and that's basically where I
04:42 found Jesus as my Saviour, was
04:44 in that church.
04:46 So I really enjoyed going there
04:49 and I had a lot of questions
04:52 about different things.
04:53 The Holy Spirit was leading me
04:55 to study further into the
04:56 scriptures and so what happened
04:58 was I decided-- I was studying
05:00 Daniel and Revelation around age
05:02 19 and I thought, you know, I'm
05:04 looking at these beasts and I
05:05 thought, "What does this mean?
05:07 Somebody somewhere must know
05:08 what this means."
05:09 So I went to the pastor and I
05:10 asked him and he says, "Oh,
05:12 that's a closed book," he said,
05:13 "We can't understand that."
05:15 And I said, "Well, you know,
05:16 somebody somewhere must
05:18 understand this.
05:18 I cannot believe that God would
05:20 write a book and not explain
05:22 it to us."
05:23 So the next year I decided I
05:25 would start my search, studying
05:29 the Bible and searching for a
05:31 group of people who would
05:32 understand what this message
05:33 meant.
05:34 And it seems that my mother was
05:36 praying for me during this time
05:38 which I didn't really know about
05:40 and she saw my deep interest in
05:43 the scriptures.
05:45 And so she had some really old
05:46 Voice of Prophecy lessons, they
05:48 were all yellow, and she says,
05:50 "Well, here," you know, I says,
05:51 "Mom, how come you have all the
05:52 answers and the pastor doesn't?"
05:54 So she handed me these lessons
05:56 and I said, "Oh, good!"
05:57 So I was reading them and
05:59 writing them and then I said,
06:00 "Well, some are missing," so I
06:01 sent away for the missing
06:03 lessons.
06:03 Well, they started me at lesson
06:05 one, took me right through
06:06 Daniel, Revelation, all the way
06:08 through the whole series and it
06:10 was such a blessing to study
06:11 those lessons.
06:12 Also during this time I was
06:15 viewing It Is Written with
06:16 George Vandeman on television
06:17 and so impressed with the truth
06:19 and the knowledge that he had
06:21 and his spirit and so I watched
06:24 that and also I went to
06:25 evangelistic meetings with
06:28 evangelist, Lawton Lowe, and
06:31 then I was baptized by Pastor
06:33 Shonder on March 31st, 1974 and
06:36 I became an Adventist with the
06:39 Seventh-day Adventist Church and
06:40 became a member.
06:41 So it was quite a process and
06:43 the Lord was leading me every
06:44 step of the way.
06:45 [HELEN] Mm-hm, amen.
06:47 >> Linda, you discovered
06:48 something about your mom
06:50 and dad.
06:51 Can you tell us what you learned
06:53 about your parents and how
06:55 they've changed?
06:57 >> Well, my mother was always a
06:58 Seventh-day Adventist and I
07:01 didn't know that until I started
07:02 searching the Bible and she saw
07:03 my interest.
07:05 And my father was not,
07:07 he was a Methodist.
07:08 He promised my mother that he
07:11 would join the Adventist Church,
07:12 but he never did.
07:14 He had a bad experience which
07:15 affected him when he was young
07:17 and it turned him off of all
07:18 churches so he really wasn't
07:21 going to join any church.
07:22 And so then my mother kept
07:28 praying for me and my dad, he--
07:32 she wanted him to take him to
07:33 church, but my mother couldn't
07:35 drive 'cause in those days the
07:36 women didn't drive and he would
07:38 not take her.
07:39 So she just, I guess, kept
07:40 praying that he would change.
07:43 He never did while she was
07:45 alive, but when my mother died,
07:49 he started reading the Bible and
07:52 The Great Controversy and Desire
07:53 of Ages and he was very
07:56 impressed with it and he
07:58 believed what he read and he was
08:01 looking forward to Jesus'
08:02 return.
08:03 So it's a shame my mother did
08:06 not see that, but I was able to
08:08 witness it so I was happy
08:09 about that.
08:10 >> I think she will see it
08:11 one day.
08:12 [LINDA] Yeah, she will.
08:13 [laughter]
08:14 >> So that's why your mom gave
08:16 you the Voice of Prophecy Bible
08:19 studies because she had them at
08:20 home because she was an
08:21 Adventist.
08:22 [LINDA] Right.
08:23 My mother had-- she was a lay
08:25 Bible worker in St. John's,
08:27 Newfoundland where she's from
08:29 and she worked with the pastor.
08:31 And to see my interest in Bible
08:34 really did her heart good.
08:37 >> What about you, Helen?
08:39 >> Yes.
08:40 I had a very excited uncle, very
08:44 passionate about the Word,
08:46 you know?
08:46 And he was always sharing, I was
08:49 a young girl and, you know, he
08:51 was sharing, talking about the
08:52 Bible and things like that.
08:55 But, you know, he started--
08:56 stirred up an interest in that.
08:58 And I think in my early teens I
09:01 was watching television and I
09:03 saw the It Is Written telecast
09:05 and it was George Vandeman and
09:09 I liked what he was sharing on
09:10 there and they offered free
09:12 Bible study guides and so they
09:14 mailed them out and you filled
09:15 them in and then send it back,
09:17 you get corrected and send you
09:20 some more and then you get a
09:21 certificate, you know?
09:23 And, "Hey, this is fun, this is
09:24 great," you know?
09:25 And I'm learning, you know, and
09:27 I'm learning more things and so
09:29 finally Pastor Eric Juriansz
09:32 came by to check out how my
09:36 interest was going.
09:38 And so he wanted to study the
09:39 Bible, I says, "Okay, fine,"
09:41 you know?
09:41 He invited the family to be
09:42 there, you know, I said, "Yeah,
09:44 okay."
09:44 But then, you know, the next
09:46 time he came, you know, they'd
09:47 hear the car coming in the
09:48 driveway and say, "Helen, the
09:50 pastor's here for your Bible
09:51 studies," you know?
09:52 And they'd all stay in their
09:53 rooms, you know, so it was just
09:54 pastor and I that were studying.
09:56 And so he introduced me to
10:00 Kingsway College so I said,
10:02 "Okay, let's go up and see what
10:04 Kingsway College is, I'm really
10:05 kind of interested in a
10:06 Christian education."
10:08 And I had already put in my
10:10 application at a St. Clair
10:12 College 'cause I was interested
10:14 in legal, legal secretarial.
10:17 And so I said to-- I was
10:20 interested in Christian
10:21 education, but I wanted to know.
10:23 I said, "Okay, God, so if You
10:25 want me to go up there for
10:26 Christian education then
10:29 St. Clair College will give me b
10:31 my entrance moneys."
10:34 And when I wrote them a letter
10:35 and told them what I was gonna
10:36 do and things like that, they
10:37 sent me back my money so I knew
10:40 that God wanted me to come to
10:41 Kingsway College.
10:43 >> So, Helen, can you tell us
10:45 what led you to being baptized?
10:49 >> Being out here, I became
10:51 friends with the pastor's
10:52 daughter and they had me over
10:54 for dinner and so we began
10:57 talking.
10:58 It was very comfortable and, of
11:00 course, I'd been doing all of
11:01 this studying before and things
11:03 like that and so he just asked
11:05 me if I'd like to be baptized
11:07 and I said, "Yes, I would."
11:09 So he obliged and we studied and
11:11 I was baptized here at College
11:13 Park Church, and February the
11:15 13th, 1971, that's when I was 19
11:19 years old and never looked back,
11:22 never looked back.
11:23 >> And then, Helen, what led you
11:27 to become a Bible worker?
11:29 >> Okay.
11:30 So...
11:32 I was working here as a medical
11:35 secretary and I was going to
11:38 prayer meetings and you go to
11:40 prayer meetings, you know, usual
11:41 kind of prayer meetings, but
11:43 this particular time and I think
11:44 it was the only time it ever
11:45 happened, someone came there and
11:47 they were-- they came and said,
11:48 "We're gonna teach you how to
11:50 give Bible studies and everybody
11:52 who comes tonight is gonna go
11:54 out with somebody tonight and
11:56 you're gonna go give-- do some
11:57 Bible study work and then you're
11:59 gonna come back here to the
12:00 church and you're gonna tell us
12:01 your experience."
12:02 Great! This is fantastic!
12:06 I've never done this before and
12:07 I got, you know, I got the Bible
12:10 work, you know, bug burning in
12:12 me, you know, 'cause I really
12:14 like doing this, you know?
12:15 And so even when I was working
12:18 in town, I decided that, you
12:20 know, I wanna go out and be
12:22 trained.
12:23 So I went to CUC and that's when
12:24 I completed my Bachelors of
12:28 Theology out there and I was
12:30 hired by the Alberta Conference
12:32 and I worked for them for two
12:34 and a half years.
12:35 And part of my experience was
12:37 when I came back, I was coming
12:39 back to Toronto and I worked
12:40 with Tracy Bravo and Henry
12:43 Feyerabend and the work that
12:45 they were doing for the
12:46 Portuguese people.
12:47 And I loved it, it's like I
12:48 went-- John the Baptist, I went
12:50 before the evangelist, you know?
12:51 I'd go into areas and try and
12:53 prepare people for the
12:54 evangelistic meetings and things
12:56 like that.
12:57 And I also wrote for the
12:59 St. Paul newspaper
13:01 for over ten months.
13:03 I actually got a letter from It
13:05 Is Written, saying, "Thank you
13:06 so much for writing these
13:08 articles in the paper about
13:10 Daniel 11."
13:11 It was just an encouragement
13:12 again from It Is Written Canada
13:14 to keep on doing this kind of
13:16 work of sharing the Bible with
13:18 people, so...
13:20 >> I see that both of you have
13:21 your Bibles with you.
13:23 So we've been talking about your
13:24 experience, now let's look in
13:26 the Bible itself.
13:27 Is there a Bible text that both
13:29 of you have, probably different
13:31 Bible texts, that you go to,
13:33 that's kind of a favourite Bible
13:34 text or an encouraging Bible
13:36 text or maybe even a story in
13:38 the Bible.
13:39 >> Yes.
13:40 My favourite is not just a text
13:42 but is Psalm 103 and it says...
14:16 So this is my favourite.
14:18 [laughs]
14:19 No matter what age I am, it's--
14:22 everything's there.
14:24 Forgiveness of sins, the healing
14:27 of diseases, giving me things to
14:30 satisfy my mouth. [laughs]
14:32 And it's just the promise of
14:35 renewing, you know, our strength
14:38 in the Lord.
14:39 >> And there's a praise there,
14:41 right, like it's praising,
14:43 "Bless the Lord," and you
14:44 continue to repeat that.
14:46 I think that's good for us,
14:47 isn't it?
14:47 [HELEN] Absolutely.
14:48 [MIKE] Just to be grateful.
14:50 When you're grateful, you know,
14:51 it encourages your own heart.
14:54 And what about you, Linda?
14:55 >> Well, my favourite book in
14:56 the Bible has always been the
14:57 book of John and I chose this
15:01 verse because I think it kinda
15:02 sums up what the book of John is
15:04 about.
15:05 And it's John chapter 20, verse
15:08 31 and it says...
15:19 It's kind of like a sister text
15:20 to the It Is Written text, you
15:22 know, about what is written in
15:24 the Bible.
15:25 And also I had another text,
15:27 John 14:6 and it says...
15:38 And I think of Jesus, He's the
15:40 eternal way, He's the eternal
15:42 truth, He's the eternal life.
15:44 And He lives today, He's in
15:47 heaven preparing a place for us
15:49 and I can't wait to see Him.
15:51 [HELEN] Amen!
15:52 >> And I know for people who are
15:53 watching, you know, Jesus does
15:55 love you and He wants you in His

19:50 And I really enjoyed working
19:52 with the indigenous people.
19:55 And so then, soon after that,
19:59 during our training, my roommate
20:01 and I went to-- door-to-door
20:04 with our training, went knocking
20:06 door-to-door and my roommate and
20:07 I found this lady who was
20:08 interested in studying the
20:09 Bible.
20:10 So we started studying with her.
20:12 And she told us one day, she
20:14 said, "My husband's in prison,
20:16 could you go visit him?"
20:17 So we thought, "Yeah, sure!"
20:19 So we got the two of us and two
20:21 other male students, the four of
20:24 us went to the prison, and we
20:25 visited the inmates, we started,
20:27 we had singing, we had a little
20:29 sermonette, and we talked with
20:31 the inmates and they really
20:33 enjoyed the personal
20:34 conversation, you know 'cause
20:35 they really wanted someone to
20:36 listen to them.
20:38 And we started that ministry,
20:39 that was about the mid-1970s and
20:42 that ministry kept on until
20:44 COVID today.
20:45 So it was something that was,
20:47 you know, that lasted.
20:49 You know, when you're a Bible
20:51 instructor and you're a female,
20:53 there aren't many jobs in the
20:55 ministry for us and so I really
20:57 prayed that the Lord would give
20:58 me work and then the BC
21:00 Conference decided to hire me as
21:03 a Bible worker.
21:05 It was like a self-supporting
21:06 type of a setup, and Brad Thorpe
21:09 was running it and he taught us
21:11 personal evangelism, how to, you
21:13 know, work with evangelistic
21:14 meetings, and Elsa Cook who has
21:17 since passed away, was a lay
21:19 Bible instructor and she was
21:22 training me in doing
21:23 door-to-door work.
21:24 And then from there I was sent
21:26 to Kelowna, BC where I worked
21:28 there for three years.
21:29 This is where I met Nora and her
21:31 daughter, Amber, was on your
21:33 program just a, I guess a few
21:35 months back, and so Nora and I
21:37 studied together and she was
21:38 really a joy to work with, she
21:39 was just so open to the truth
21:41 and she just loved the Lord.
21:42 And she decided that she would
21:46 become baptized and become a
21:47 member.
21:48 To me, there's nothing more
21:50 beautiful than watching someone
21:52 give their heart to Jesus.
21:54 That just, to me, it's the most
21:56 satisfying work you can
21:57 possibly do.
21:58 [HELEN] Yes.
21:59 >> Helen and Linda, how are you
22:01 both involved in your local
22:04 churches now?
22:05 >> My local church is Chatham,
22:07 Ontario and I was instrumental
22:10 in getting a branch Sabbath
22:12 School started there.
22:14 There used to be a little church
22:15 there years ago, probably like
22:17 35 years ago now, and so it's
22:22 been wonderful because God has
22:24 just brought people that are
22:26 Filipinos and there's some
22:28 Spanish people and it's just--
22:31 we started out with about five
22:32 or seven of us and now it's
22:34 grown to 25.
22:36 And so we're just really excited
22:39 to keep it growing and we have
22:43 been blessed by places to meet
22:47 and we're continuing to work on
22:48 that aspect of it as well.
22:50 >> That's really awesome.
22:51 So you're in the Chatham church,
22:53 but you started your branch
22:54 Sabbath school in the Dresden,
22:56 Ontario area.
22:58 That's beautiful.
22:59 We've been there and it's just
23:02 growing and you're really
23:03 instrumental in being a part
23:05 of that.
23:06 [HELEN] Amen, thank you.
23:07 >> What about you, Linda?
23:08 >> I'm currently, I'm teaching
23:10 Sabbath school via Zoom and also
23:14 a church member and myself are
23:16 studying the Bible with a lady
23:18 who's very interested in
23:19 studying the Bible and loves the
23:20 Lord so we're studying with her.
23:23 [MIKE] That's awesome.
23:24 So we've got two final
23:25 questions.
23:26 First of all, as Bible workers,
23:28 do you see that people are more
23:31 or less interested in receiving
23:33 Bible studies today?
23:34 >> I feel that different decades
23:37 there's different responses, but
23:39 I think with people looking at
23:41 the environment and seeing
23:42 things happening today that they
23:44 are really starting to question
23:46 things and questioning where
23:47 they're coming from and is there
23:49 really a God and I believe the
23:51 interest is growing.
23:53 >> Mm, they're seeing wars,
23:54 they're seeing unexplainable
23:56 things, sickness...
23:57 [LINDA] Earthquakes, people
23:59 having more problems with their
24:00 health and their mental peace
24:04 and they're just feeling that
24:06 there's gotta be more.
24:07 [MIKE] So they're looking for
24:08 answers.
24:09 [HELEN] Yeah, I think the key is
24:11 responsiveness and the Holy
24:14 Spirit works with people on a
24:16 very personal, individual basis.
24:19 For us to number that, to try to
24:20 put a number on, you know,
24:22 whether they're more responsive
24:24 or not responsive, I don't know.
24:26 It's kinda like limiting the
24:27 Holy Spirit because we need to
24:29 be working with the Holy Spirit
24:31 because if the Holy Spirit's
24:32 working with them, then we
24:34 should be able to be matched up,
24:36 right?
24:37 >> Sure.
24:37 And Jesus said the harvest is
24:38 plentiful so there's a lot out
24:40 there who are looking, we just
24:42 need more people like yourself.
24:43 I really like what you're doing
24:44 'cause it's, like you said, it's
24:46 a heart of love and love means
24:49 hard work, getting out there and
24:50 doing that work.
24:52 >> Do you have any final
24:54 thoughts that you would like to
24:55 share with our viewers?
24:57 [LINDA] I would like to say at
24:58 the time when I was in the
25:00 Baptist church, I remember
25:01 standing on the balcony and
25:03 looking around the church and
25:05 realizing that this is the last
25:06 time I was going to worship in
25:07 this church.
25:09 And so it was not easy to leave,
25:12 but I knew I had to follow my
25:13 heart, I had to follow the Holy
25:14 Spirit and I had to follow
25:16 the truth.
25:17 So I left that church and I had
25:19 prayed that one day this church
25:21 would become a Seventh-day
25:23 Adventist church.
25:24 And many years later, it was
25:26 sold several times, and
25:28 amazingly enough, the
25:29 Seventh-day Adventists actually
25:31 purchased that church.
25:32 So when I went back to visit
25:34 again later, I went there not as
25:36 a Baptist, but as a Seventh-day
25:37 Adventist.
25:38 The Lord really answered that
25:39 prayer.
25:40 And I'd just like to say that,
25:42 you know, those of you who are
25:43 searching and who are looking, I
25:45 just want you to know that Jesus
25:47 loves you, He died for you, He
25:49 was resurrected for you, He's
25:50 living for you in heaven and
25:51 preparing a place for you and He
25:53 can't wait to share that place
25:55 with you.
25:55 [MIKE] Mmm.
25:56 Thank you, Linda.
25:57 So gonna give the final word, a
26:00 prayer, I want you to pray for
26:02 us, Helen.
26:03 Pray for our viewers.
26:05 [HELEN] Yes, absolutely.
26:06 >> There may be someone who's
26:06 struggling right now and they're
26:08 listening and maybe they're
26:09 struggling to believe in God or
26:11 to believe that there is some
26:13 answer to what they're going
26:15 through.
26:16 Maybe you can pray for them
26:17 right now.
26:17 >> Yes, let's do that.
26:19 Heavenly Father, we thank You
26:20 for Jesus, we thank You for the
26:22 work of the Holy Spirit, we're
26:24 thankful for It Is Written,
26:25 we're thankful that they offer
26:27 the Bible studies that people
26:28 can find the answers that
26:30 they're looking for.
26:32 Help those that are struggling,
26:34 Lord.
26:35 May they respond to that measure
26:38 of faith that You've put in
26:39 their hearts so that they can
26:43 find their way to You and find
26:45 Your way to the people of God
26:48 that love Jesus and keep the
26:50 commandments.
26:52 Continue to bless each one at
26:55 It Is Written.
26:56 You know everyone's
26:57 responsibilities here and we
26:59 pray that You will continue to
27:02 bless and guide them and help
27:04 them to share their faith so
27:06 that people will know that Jesus
27:08 is coming soon and we want to be
27:11 ready and we want to help others
27:14 to be ready as well.
27:15 We pray this in Jesus' name,
27:17 amen.
27:18 [MIKE & RENÉ] Amen.
27:20 >> Helen and Linda, thank you so
27:22 much for joining us on It Is
