00:01 >> Hello and thank you
00:03 for joining us on
00:04 It Is Written Canada.
00:06 You know, far too often
00:08 we received the worst
00:10 possible news.
00:12 >> We get a phonecall or see
00:14 it on the news and often what
00:16 we do when we hear the worst
00:19 possible news is determined by
00:21 our understanding of the
00:23 goodness of God.
00:25 How do you see Him?
00:27 Why do bad things happen to
00:28 innocent people and where is
00:30 God when tragedy strikes?
00:34 How does He relate to our
00:36 suffering and pain?
00:38 In the Bible we see that God
00:39 is not standing aloof at a
00:41 distance allowing us to suffer
00:44 on our own.
00:46 It was really at the cross
00:47 that we see that sin and
00:50 sickness and death have caused
00:52 the greatest suffering to the
00:54 heart of God Himself.
00:57 >> To help us understand these
00:59 practical questions, our guest
01:01 today is 11-year-old John Dias
01:04 who, with the help of his
01:06 mother, has started his own
01:08 YouTube channel to study
01:10 the Bible.

02:16 I'm really excited to be here.

02:19 here and you brought your

02:21 This is amazing.
02:22 This is so cool.
02:23 >> So what do you have set up

02:26 >> So this is the scene that
02:28 we're gonna be using for Job.
02:30 [René] OK, so we are happy to

02:41 And we know that you have your
02:42 own YouTube channel where you
02:44 use your LEGO to illustrate
02:47 truths from the Bible.
02:49 >> So what we've been talking
02:50 about is how the worst set of
02:53 circumstances you can get,
02:54 news about something really
02:56 bad like someone is sick or
02:57 someone died or
02:59 maybe you get sick.
03:00 Have you ever had something
03:01 like that happen to you?
03:02 >> Well, yes.
03:04 When I was a bit younger,
03:06 when I was about like
03:07 six years old, my grandfather
03:09 died and that made me and
03:11 my family really sad.
03:13 And recently me and my parents
03:15 got COVID-19.
03:17 >> Oh, man!
03:18 [John] Yeah.
03:19 >> Well, I'm so sad about your
03:20 grandfather, that's-- I'm
03:21 sorry about that, but
03:23 COVID-19, what was that like?
03:25 >> Well, I was sick for one
03:28 day and for me and my family
03:31 it wasn't as bad as we thought
03:32 it would be.
03:33 So, as I said, I was sick for
03:35 one day and my parents, they
03:37 were sick a little longer.
03:39 But really the worst part was
03:40 being in quarantine
03:42 for 14 days.
03:44 >> Yeah, that would be
03:44 the worst.
03:45 >> You just had to stay home
03:46 for 14 days and you weren't
03:47 even feeling sick.
03:48 [John] No.
03:50 So there are some people who
03:51 experience more tragedies
03:53 than others.
03:54 So, John, can you tell us a
03:56 little bit about Job?
03:58 >> Well, here, this is Job.
04:01 He was a rich man and
04:04 he feared God and he shunned
04:06 evil and he was a good and
04:07 honest person.
04:09 And he had many farm animals,
04:12 oxen, donkeys, camels, sheep,
04:16 and he had a large number of
04:18 servants and seven sons and
04:19 three daughters.
04:21 >> Well, that really doesn't
04:23 sound like he was suffering.
04:25 >> Well, he wasn't suffering
04:27 until Satan came in the scene
04:30 and started accusing Job to
04:32 God saying things like,
04:35 "Job only serves you because"
04:39 "You bless him, because You"
04:40 "give him everything."
04:41 "Let me take care of him"
04:43 "and he will curse You"
04:44 "to Your face."
04:46 >> So what happened, John?
04:48 >> So then God allowed Satan
04:50 to do anything to Job
04:52 except hurt Job.
04:54 So then immediately Satan came
04:56 and he destroyed all of the
04:58 son's house...
04:59 [Mike] Whoa!
05:00 where they were partying.
05:01 [René] Whoa! [gasps]
05:02 >> And along with all their--
05:04 along with Job's farm animals
05:08 and all his servants.
05:10 That was really intense.
05:11 [Mike] That was.
05:13 >> And so his sons and his
05:14 daughters died, too?
05:15 >> Yeah.
05:16 >> Oh, Job must have
05:17 been so sad.
05:19 >> Yes, I would have been very
05:21 unhappy if my parents died.
05:24 In fact my greatest fear is
05:27 that my family may die and I
05:29 wouldn't wanna go through what
05:30 Job went through.
05:31 When this happened, Job, when
05:34 he got the news, Job, he got
05:37 up and he tore his robe and he
05:40 shaved his head and he went to
05:42 the ground and he worshipped
05:43 God and he said:
05:46 "Naked I came from my"
05:47 "mother's womb and naked"
05:49 "I will depart."
05:50 "The Lord gave and the Lord"
05:52 "has taken away."
05:54 "May the name of the Lord"
05:55 "be praised."
05:56 "So when all of this happened,"
05:59 "Job, he did not sin by"
06:01 "charging God of wrong-doing."
06:04 >> So Satan was wrong, right?
06:06 I mean, Job was a faithful
06:09 friend of God, whether God
06:12 treated him well or allowed
06:14 this terrible thing to happen
06:16 to his whole family and took
06:17 it all away.
06:18 So what we see there is that
06:20 it's not really, you know,
06:22 some people say, "Oh, it's"
06:23 "God's fault that all these"
06:24 "things happened," but it
06:25 wasn't God who caused it,
06:26 it was actually Satan.
06:30 >> Yes!
06:32 In fact, the three main sources
06:35 of pain and suffering are
06:37 sin, Satan, and selfishness.
06:41 >> Oh, that's easy to
06:42 remember, right, three S's.
06:44 So, let's start with Satan,
06:46 this is this little guy that
06:47 you got here, so--
06:49 but he's real, right?
06:51 [John] Yeah.
06:52 >> Like, who is Satan?
06:53 >> Well, he, Satan, is the
06:56 "Chief Evil Spirit" or
06:58 "The Fallen Angel" and he's
07:01 the greatest enemy of God and
07:03 of humanity and he is also
07:06 known as "The Devil."
07:07 [René] So you said
07:09 "Fallen Angel," what do you
07:11 mean by "Fallen Angel," John?
07:13 [John] Well, before Satan was
07:17 the Devil, turned himself into
07:19 the Devil, he was an angel and
07:21 he was the highest angel in
07:23 heaven and he worked closest
07:25 to God and his name used to be
07:28 "Lucifer" which means
07:30 "morning star" or
07:31 "light-bearer."
07:33 >> So do we find that
07:34 in the Bible?
07:36 >> Yes, we can find that in
07:37 the Bible in Ezekiel 28.
07:41 >> Mm-hmm. What does it say?
07:43 [John] It says first he's the
07:45 anointed cherub which is
07:46 another name for an angel,
07:48 two, he was blameless, he was
07:52 perfect and there was no sin
07:54 in him and three, he was in
07:56 the Garden of Eden.
07:57 >> Wait a minute.
07:58 He was the closest angel to
08:00 God so was very close to God,
08:03 right, and then how did he
08:06 become the Devil?
08:08 >> The Bible gives us a clear
08:09 answer to that question.
08:11 In Isaiah 14:12-14 we read
08:15 these words...
08:46 So sin started in the
08:47 heart of Lucifer.
08:49 The Bible says that he said in
08:51 his heart that he wanted to be
08:53 higher than God.
08:55 >> So sin started in his
08:56 heart then?
08:58 [John] Yes, sin started in
08:59 Lucifer's heart.
09:00 >> So if it started in his
09:01 heart then did God create
09:04 Lucifer with a bad heart?
09:06 >> No, no, no.
09:07 God made Lucifer with a good,
09:09 very good heart.
09:10 He was blameless and
09:12 he was perfect and there was
09:13 no sin in him.
09:15 [Mike] So then how did it
09:16 get into his heart
09:18 if it was perfect?
09:21 >> First we need to understand
09:23 that there is no good reason
09:25 for sin, but if it can give a
09:28 reason for evil and then we
09:30 can excuse it.
09:31 [Mike] Right.
09:32 That's like if your car breaks
09:33 down because you didn't
09:35 maintain it then there's an
09:36 excuse, there's a reason.
09:37 >> Yeah.
09:38 >> But there's no good reason
09:40 for evil getting into a
09:42 perfect place like heaven.
09:43 So he must have--
09:45 How did it get in there?
09:46 >> So, but what we do know
09:49 is that God gave Lucifer the
09:52 power of choice.
09:53 God created Lucifer with the
09:55 power of choice and He gives
09:57 us that same freedom.
09:59 In Deuteronomy 30, God says...
10:09 >> So Lucifer chose to reject
10:12 God and he chose to be filled
10:15 with pride instead of being
10:18 filled with the love of God.
10:19 >> Yes, René, that's true.
10:21 Just take a look at
10:23 Lucifer's language.
10:25 He keeps on using
10:26 the word, "I."
10:27 "I will do this" and
10:28 "I will do that."
10:30 Count with me how much times
10:32 he uses the word "I" in two
10:33 verses of the Bible.
10:34 Isaiah 14:13-14...
10:39 "I will ascend into heaven..."
10:53 "I will ascend above the"
10:55 "heights of the clouds,"
10:56 "I will be like the"
10:57 "Most High."
10:58 "I, I, I, I, I."
11:01 He uses the word "I" in two--
11:05 He uses the word "I" five
11:07 times in two verses.
11:08 What does that tell us about
11:10 his choices?
11:12 >> Well, that tells me that
11:14 Lucifer was full of himself.
11:16 He was self-absorbed and
11:18 he was selfish and he was
11:20 jealous of God and His power
11:22 and authority.
11:24 >> Yes, Lucifer turned himself
11:26 into the Devil when he desired
11:29 to rob God of His position and
11:32 of His power.
11:33 >> Have you ever heard of
11:35 someone being green with envy?
11:39 >> Yes, when someone is green
11:41 with envy that means they have
11:43 the extreme desire to have
11:44 what rightfully belongs to
11:46 another person.
11:47 Like Lucifer, he had the
11:50 extreme desire to have what
11:52 rightfully belonged to God.
11:54 >> That's true.
11:55 That's what "green"
11:56 "with envy" means.
11:58 But if we eat green food, that
12:02 has a total different meaning
12:04 because green food like kale
12:07 and spinach and salads are
12:09 good for us because they are
12:11 healthy and they give our

13:09 Ah, I love coconut water.
13:11 >> Yeah, it's really good for
13:12 the summer, it has natural

13:17 left over, which sometimes we

13:40 smoothie and it's gonna give
13:41 it a really fun colour and

17:07 the Garden of Eden.
17:09 But we're gonna talk about
17:10 that later.
17:12 [Mike] So, John, you are a
17:15 YouTuber, you have your own
17:17 Bible station and we've been
17:19 talking to you about how
17:21 Lucifer was green with envy
17:24 which means that he didn't eat
17:25 green popsicles, it means that
17:28 he wanted God's position and
17:31 he was envious of God and you
17:34 were using these little LEGO's
17:35 which you use on your YouTube
17:37 to teach about the Bible.
17:38 So he was envious of God in
17:39 His position.
17:41 [René] So if Lucifer, if sin
17:46 started in Lucifer's heart,
17:48 then it must have started in
17:51 heaven because Lucifer lived
17:54 in heaven.
17:56 So how did that happen?
17:59 >> Yes, René, we can see in
18:00 the Bible, book of
18:02 Revelation 12:7-9, we read
18:06 these words...
18:32 >> So it seems kind of
18:33 strange, John, that there
18:34 would be war in heaven.
18:36 So what kind of war was that?
18:38 >> Yes, the word for "war" in
18:41 original Greek is pólemos
18:43 which means "a war of words."
18:46 So Satan and his angels had
18:50 a war of words with God and
18:52 His government because
18:54 Satan wanted to be
18:55 worshipped as God.
18:57 [Mike] Mmm! So I'm looking
18:59 at it this way: if God is so
19:01 powerful, He could just take
19:02 Satan and throw him to the
19:03 earth just like, you know,
19:05 cast a pebble, you know,
19:06 into a pond.
19:08 So why didn't God just destroy
19:10 him right from the beginning
19:11 instead of causing, you know,
19:13 all this sickness and
19:14 suffering that he allowed
19:16 him to do?
19:17 >> Good question.
19:18 The answer for that question
19:20 is found in 1 John: 4 which
19:23 mentions three important words:
19:26 "God is love."
19:28 Everything God has done,
19:30 is doing, or will do in the
19:32 future is based on the
19:33 principle of love.
19:36 Love is based on putting
19:37 others first and love doesn't
19:39 use force, but is based on the
19:42 willingness of allowing
19:44 everyone to have the freedom
19:46 of choice.
19:47 As I said, Satan is obsessed
19:50 with the love of power.
19:52 On the other hand, God works
19:54 by the power of love.
19:56 >> So God's love prevented Him
19:57 from destroying the Devil?
19:59 >> Yes, let me explain.
20:02 So suppose you have a great
20:03 leader whose name is Truth
20:07 and Truth is a good and honest
20:09 person, but Truth has a best
20:11 friend whose name is Lucifer
20:14 who works closest to Truth.
20:16 So then one day Lucifer comes
20:19 out and he starts telling lies
20:21 about Truth.
20:22 He says, Lucifer says that
20:24 Truth has been lying and
20:26 hasn't been telling the truth.
20:28 Do you think some people might
20:29 believe Lucifer?
20:31 >> Hey, can I see those
20:32 for a sec?
20:33 See, the way I look at it is
20:34 this: if Lucifer is so close
20:37 to Truth and he starts talking
20:41 about him and saying,
20:42 "Hey, Truth is telling a lie,"
20:44 then there might be some
20:46 people who think, "Yeah, you"
20:48 "know what, maybe he is"
20:49 "telling a lie."
20:51 So yeah, some people might
20:52 believe it.
20:54 >> Yes, but the truth is that
20:56 the leader, whose name is
20:57 Truth, is telling the truth
21:01 and Lucifer is lying,
21:03 but nobody really knows
21:04 that for sure.
21:06 So then Truth comes out and
21:08 kills Lucifer and he-- Truth
21:12 got rid of the real liar.
21:15 Do you Truth would have gotten
21:17 rid of his problem by getting
21:19 rid of the real liar?
21:20 >> I don't know if he'd get
21:21 rid of his problem because he
21:23 might have a bigger problem on
21:24 his hands because now you
21:26 really don't know who's
21:27 telling the truth 'cause all
21:28 of a sudden, God with all
21:29 His power just kills
21:31 Lucifer and gets him out of
21:33 the way, now he's got a bigger
21:34 problem on his hands because
21:36 now everyone is serving God
21:37 out of fear and not
21:40 out of love.
21:41 >> The Bible says in
21:42 1 John 4:18...
21:49 [Mike] So if God didn't create
21:52 us with the power of choice,
21:54 what kind of creatures could
21:55 He have created?
21:56 >> Well, God could have
21:57 created robots.
21:58 >> Robots...
22:00 >> Or He could have created
22:01 programmable machines
22:03 or even slaves.
22:05 >> So, John, what if your best
22:07 friend was a programmable robot
22:10 and he just was your friend
22:12 because you programmed him to
22:13 be your friend?
22:14 Would you like it?
22:15 >> No.
22:16 [Mike] Why not?
22:17 >> Because I would know that
22:19 he's only my friend because he
22:22 has no choice because he was
22:23 programmed to be my friend.
22:25 I want a friend who actually
22:27 wants to be my friend, who has
22:29 the freedom of choice.
22:31 >> Yeah, that's good.
22:32 But here is the thing: when
22:34 you have the freedom of
22:35 choice, it's very dangerous
22:38 because someone who likes you
22:40 now may choose to not like you
22:43 later and so that's pretty
22:45 dangerous, isn't it?
22:46 [John] Yeah, but that's the
22:48 risk that God took.
22:50 God is love so that's the risk
22:51 that He took in making his--
22:55 Lucifer, his angels, and us
22:57 with the power of choice.
22:59 [Mike] That's beautiful.
23:00 [René] So then, John, how did
23:02 sin come to planet earth?
23:06 >> Well, remember when I said
23:08 that Satan is also called
23:11 "The Ancient Serpent?"
23:12 [Mike] Mm-hmm.
23:13 You know you have the Garden
23:14 of Eden right here.
23:15 It's a cool LEGO...
23:18 So God actually said that
23:21 they-- there's Adam and Eve
23:23 over there, that they mustn't
23:24 eat of the tree, otherwise
23:26 what would happen to them?
23:27 >> They would die.
23:28 >> And what did Lucifer say?
23:30 >> Lucifer said, "You will"
23:31 "not certainly die and your"
23:33 "eyes would be opened and"
23:35 "you would be like God,"
23:36 "knowing good and evil."
23:38 >> So what he's really saying
23:40 is, "God is keeping"
23:41 "something away from you,"
23:43 right, and "you're gonna"
23:44 "become better, you're gonna"
23:45 "become more like God."
23:47 "You're gonna become God"
23:49 "yourself," just like he fell
23:50 because of that.
23:51 So did they become more like
23:53 God or less like God?
23:55 >> Much less.
23:55 [Mike] Much less.
23:57 So they became ashamed and
23:59 they hid their nakedness.
24:00 How did they do that?
24:01 With fig leaves, right?
24:02 >> Yes.
24:03 >> So we're running out of
24:05 time now, John, but is there
24:07 one last verse in the Bible or
24:09 something you would like to
24:10 share with us?
24:11 >> Yes, I wanna close off with
24:13 a verse in the Bible.
24:14 It's in Romans 6:23.
24:18 It says...
24:28 [Mike] That's beautiful.
24:30 So really what that verse
24:32 does-- can I just take the
24:33 Bible there?
24:34 It actually gives us the
24:36 answer to this problem of sin,
24:40 the solution to it.
24:41 And that is that, you know,
24:43 sin causes death,
24:45 but that God has given us
24:47 eternal life.
24:48 And we know if we look all the
24:50 way back in the Bible in
24:51 Revelation, the end of the
24:53 Bible, Revelation chapter 21.
24:55 It says something really
24:57 beautiful, it says,
24:58 "God will wipe away all"
24:59 "tears from our eyes."
25:00 So God is gonna hit the
25:02 "stop badness button" one day.
25:05 And it says there's gonna be
25:06 no more death, neither sorrow
25:08 nor crying, "neither shall"
25:10 "there be any more pain"
25:13 "for the former things have"
25:14 "passed away."
25:16 So God is one day going to
25:17 bring a complete end to all
25:20 the sin and suffering that we
25:21 find in the world.
25:23 Isn't that beautiful?
25:23 [John] Yes.
25:25 >> John, I'm gonna ask you to
25:25 pray for us as we
25:26 close off today.
25:28 >> Sure, let's pray.
25:31 God, we have seen that the
25:34 three main sources of pain and
25:36 suffering are sin, Satan,
25:39 and selfishness.
25:41 And God, we know that sin has
25:44 caused You to personally
25:46 suffer more than anyone
25:47 else, for the Bible says
25:49 that Your son, Jesus...
26:08 So, God, if there is someone
26:10 listening to my voice right
26:11 now who is feeling like giving
26:13 up, like life is not worth
26:16 living, like they have
26:17 experienced one painful,
26:19 tragic loss after another that
26:22 has shaken their life, then
26:23 please, Lord, help them to
26:26 discover the blessings that
26:28 they, too, may experience in
26:29 the midst of their pain, how
26:31 they can be filled with joy
26:33 and peace in the midst of
26:35 tragedy and pain.
26:37 Please, Lord, come very close
26:39 to them and fill their hearts
26:40 with Your love and joy
26:42 and peace.
26:43 In the name of Jesus,
26:45 I pray, amen.
26:47 [Mike & René] Amen.
