00:09 >> And then we leave it there
00:10 to soak for two weeks.
00:12 >> After two weeks,
00:14 what do you see?
00:15 >> You reach in
00:17 and pull out a...
00:18 red canvas.
00:20 >> Do you think that
00:22 any of the original plain
00:23 white canvas will be
00:25 showing through?
00:26 >> Not a chance!
00:27 Every fibre and microfibre
00:30 of the canvas is soaked and
00:32 saturated in red paint.
00:34 >> Now...
00:35 what if that was you?
00:37 >> Excuse me?
00:38 >> No, I don't mean that you
00:39 are soaked and saturated
00:41 in red paint.
00:42 What I mean is,
00:43 what if you were soaked
00:45 and saturated in the
00:45 love of Jesus?
00:47 What if every fibre and
00:50 microfibre of your being
00:51 were immersed in the
00:52 goodness of Christ?
00:54 What would you look like?
00:55 >> Well, I would look
00:56 like Jesus.
00:58 I would be truthful, kind,
00:59 compassionate, forgiving,
01:01 merciful, and I would live at
01:03 peace with all people.
01:05 Galatians 3:27 says that...
01:10 or soaked and saturated
01:12 in Jesus
01:15 so that you are now living a
01:19 Jesus-like life.
01:21 None of the plain old you
01:23 shows through.
01:25 >> In Galatians 2:20
01:26 Paul says:
01:32 And in I Corinthians
01:34 he uses this phrase:
01:40 >> We want to encourage you
01:42 to take the plunge.
01:43 Every day become
01:45 soaked and saturated
01:46 in the love of Jesus.
01:48 And when others look at you,
01:50 they will see Jesus.
01:52 >> In a moment, we are going
01:53 to introduce you to an amazing
01:55 person who was so soaked and
01:57 saturated in the love of Jesus
01:59 that he became the most
02:01 popular man in his country.
02:05 ♪♪
02:42 >> He was described as quite
02:44 simply the most popular and
02:46 friendliest man in Bermuda.
02:48 His name was Johnny Barnes
02:50 and he was soaked and
02:51 saturated in the
02:53 love of Jesus.
02:54 >> Johnny Barnes worked
02:55 on the Bermuda Railroad
02:57 as an electrician until the
02:59 railroad closed in 1948.
03:02 And then at the age of 25
03:04 Johnny became a bus driver.
03:06 And he was a very
03:08 friendly man,
03:09 fond of waving to the people
03:11 while driving his bus.
03:13 >> He would even sit and wave
03:15 to people on his breaks or
03:17 when continuing to work.
03:19 >> One day a lady by the name
03:21 of Rosemary Tyrrell,
03:22 she remembers that when she
03:24 was little, Johnny used to
03:25 always wave and cheer to all
03:27 the children and make them
03:29 feel like they were royalty.
03:31 >> In 1986 after
03:33 thirty-eight years of
03:34 working as a bus driver,
03:36 Johnny retired at the
03:37 age of 63.
03:39 Mike: But Johnny wasn't the
03:40 kind of man who could retire.
03:42 He was in the habit of
03:43 getting up every morning
03:44 really early, 2:00 A.M.,
03:46 eating his breakfast,
03:47 reading his Bible
03:48 and praying for two hours.
03:50 And one morning
03:51 around 3:00 A.M.
03:53 Johnny remembers that he was
03:55 praying to the Lord,
03:56 asking Him, "What do you want"
03:57 "me to do now?"
03:59 "I'm retired and I can't just"
04:00 "sit around all day."
04:02 "I want to help people."
04:04 "I have to do something"
04:05 "for other people."
04:06 "I have to tell them"
04:08 "about Your love, Lord."
04:10 "I am just this little"
04:12 "Johnny Barnes," he said.
04:13 "I am an instrument in Your"
04:14 "hands, Lord."
04:16 "Lord, what do you want me"
04:17 "to do now?"
04:19 >> Johnny says the Lord
04:20 impressed him to go stand on
04:22 the street corner and tell the
04:24 people passing the following
04:26 three words:
04:27 "I love you."
04:28 >> So Johnny was obedient
04:30 and he went to the corner
04:31 of Crow Lane where the
04:33 roundabout was,
04:34 the busiest intersection
04:35 in Bermuda
04:36 and he started waving to the
04:38 people at 3:45 in the morning.
04:42 >> It was still dark out when
04:43 he started,
04:44 but that didn't stop Johnny.
04:46 He stood there
04:47 and waved at everyone passing
04:49 into Hamilton
04:51 on their way to work
04:52 until 10:00 A.M. that morning.
04:54 >> And the next morning
04:56 he woke up at 2:00 A.M. again,
04:57 he ate his breakfast,
04:58 he opened up his Bible,
05:00 he prayed to the Lord
05:01 for guidance
05:02 and he felt impressed to do
05:03 the very same thing.
05:05 He made it to the corner at
05:08 Crow Lane at 3:45 A.M. again
05:12 and he started waving to the
05:13 people and telling them,
05:14 "God loves you, I love you,"
05:16 "I hope you have a good day!"
05:18 >> From Monday to Friday
05:20 he could be found waving to
05:22 the people for six hours and
05:23 fifteen minutes saying,
05:26 "God loves you, I love you,"
05:28 "I love you, I love you!"
05:30 >> So one day, the director of
05:33 transportation for Bermuda,
05:35 his name is Herman Basden,
05:36 he received a message from one
05:38 of his supervisors saying,
05:40 "Mr. Barnes is waving to the"
05:42 "traffic at Crow Lane."
05:44 >> So the director of
05:45 transportation for Bermuda
05:47 asked if Mr. Barnes could be
05:49 sent to him.
05:50 And when Johnny Barnes came,
05:52 he asked him why he was waving
05:54 at the traffic and saying,
05:56 "I love you."
05:57 >> And Johnny said,
05:58 "Mr. Basden,"
05:59 "this is something that God"
06:00 "has asked me to do."
06:02 "He has blessed me to do it."
06:03 "I need to do it."
06:04 "I want to do it."
06:06 >> Mr. Basden answered:
06:08 "Well, who am I"
06:09 "to question that?"
06:11 And Johnny was free to keep
06:12 waving at the people.
06:14 >> And Johnny Barnes continued
06:15 day after day,
06:16 week after week,
06:18 and year after year
06:20 waving and blowing kisses to
06:22 the people and saying,
06:23 "I love you, I love you,"
06:24 "I love you!"
06:26 >> One day after more than
06:28 fifteen years of waving
06:30 on the street corner,
06:32 Johnny failed to show up at
06:34 his regular spot at Crow Lane.
06:36 >> And all over the island of
06:38 Bermuda phones were calling in
06:40 to the police station and the
06:42 local radio station to find
06:43 out what had happened to
06:44 Johnny Barnes.
06:46 >> Well, it turned out that
06:47 Johnny was in the hospital,
06:49 nothing serious.
06:50 And soon after that, he
06:52 reappeared in his usual spot.
06:54 >> But this "time off"
06:57 that Johnny had,
06:58 he got the people to worrying.
07:00 What would happen if Johnny
07:03 wasn't there for the drive to
07:04 work in the morning?
07:06 >> The answer was to hire a
07:08 local sculptor to create a
07:10 life-size bronze statue of
07:12 Johnny Barnes, which they did,
07:15 spending over $70,000 to honour
07:18 a man who was still alive.
07:20 >> So this got me to thinking,
07:22 and here's a personal
07:22 question:
07:23 What if you didn't turn up
07:25 at work?
07:26 What if I didn't turn up at
07:28 work one morning?
07:29 Would people call in to the
07:30 radio stations or the police
07:31 station to find out what had
07:33 happened to me?
07:34 >> Would they raise $70,000
07:37 to create a life-size statue
07:39 of you?
07:40 >> I really don't think anyone
07:42 would ever do that for me.
07:43 But it really wasn't
07:44 about Johnny.
07:46 Johnny wasn't doing it to
07:47 attract attention to himself.
07:50 He did it because God told him
07:51 to do it.
07:53 It was about the
07:54 message of love,
07:55 the message of God's love.
07:57 >> Johnny said,
07:58 "The good Lord and I,"
08:00 "we are just trying"
08:01 "to make people happy."
08:04 So let's take a look at the
08:05 man himself, Johnny Barnes,
08:08 and what the people of Bermuda
08:10 thought about him.
08:11 >> Take a look at this.
08:17 >> Ummm...
08:21 He's the person
08:23 that loves people
08:26 and he cares about everybody
08:29 and he's nice...
08:36 and all day he likes
08:39 to do this:
08:42 blow kisses and
08:46 say "hi" to people.
08:50 [Johnny Barnes chuckling]
08:53 Johnny Barnes: God gives us
08:54 all something to do.
08:56 The tongue has a talent:
08:57 speech.
08:59 We can use it to God's
09:00 name, honour and glory
09:01 or we can use it to
09:02 just the opposite way.
09:05 [young girl speaking]
09:06 >> He's not paid, he's not...
09:09 he's not asked to do it,
09:10 he does it for free.
09:11 [2nd young girl speaking]
09:12 >> He stands out there in the
09:13 wind and the rain
09:14 and the sun and...
09:15 everything.
09:16 [3rd young girl speaking]
09:17 >> I think it's
09:18 6:00 until 10:00.
09:19 That's about four hours.
09:20 That's quite a long time just
09:22 standing on a round-about
09:23 and in the heat.
09:24 It can get quite hot,
09:26 even in the morning.
09:27 Just to think,
09:28 he gets up there every day,
09:30 early in the morning,
09:31 apart from Christmas day,
09:32 and then goes all the way over
09:34 to this round-about and he
09:35 starts making everyone happy
09:37 which is...
09:38 just mind-blowing really
09:40 that someone would do that.
09:44 >> I say "I love you" to my
09:46 parents, but not to other
09:48 people I don't know.
09:50 That's weird...
09:52 because I don't really know
09:53 them so...yeah.
09:57 >> I've met him
09:58 in a grocery market
10:00 and he said the same thing
10:03 there at the [unintelligible].
10:05 He said,
10:05 I love you, I love you"
10:06 at the grocery market, too.
10:08 But he was just shopping there
10:10 and whenever he'd come by
10:12 someone he would say that.
10:14 When I saw the statue,
10:17 I thought it was pretty cool
10:18 because he's sort of like...
10:20 more like...
10:23 important-er maybe than
10:24 the Premier
10:26 because I don't think the
10:27 Premier has a statue,
10:29 but I can understand that
10:31 because the Premier hasn't
10:33 been the Premier for over
10:34 twenty-five years.
10:37 Except Johnny Barnes has.
10:39 He's been doing
10:40 "I love you, I love you"
10:41 for twenty-five years.
10:44 >> I l'-- I l'-- I love--
10:46 I love you.
10:47 Johnny Barnes: I want to
10:48 go to heaven.
10:49 You know, I don't want to live
10:50 here forever.
10:51 No way!
10:53 I wanna go upstairs.
10:54 [chuckles]
10:56 I wanna go to heaven.
10:58 That's why I'm trying to do my
10:59 little bit.
11:01 Trying to leave this world a
11:02 little better place than I
11:03 found it.
11:04 Happiness...
11:05 Happiness is a choice.
11:07 You can choose to be happy,
11:08 choose not to be ha--.
11:09 I choose to be happy.
11:11 When the good Lord wakes me up
11:12 in the morning,
11:13 puts a song in my soul,
11:14 a joy in my soul,
11:15 a smile on my face,
11:16 I just give it away
11:18 to others.
11:19 That's why the good Lord and I
11:20 are down there every morning.
11:21 Just trying to give it away,
11:22 make people happy.
11:23 There's a chorus that I used
11:24 to sing, it says umm...
11:26 Johnny singing: ♪In His time♪
11:30 ♪in His time
11:33 ♪He'll make all things
11:34 ♪beautiful in His time
11:39 ♪In His time, in His time
11:43 [Young girl speaking]
11:44 >> Everyone will always
11:45 remember and keep the memory
11:47 of Johnny Barnes.
11:48 And they will tell their
11:49 children...
11:50 and their children might even
11:51 tell their children.
11:52 The memory will pass down
11:53 for quite a while.
11:55 So people will remember him
11:56 for the great deed he has done
11:57 for the whole of Bermuda.
12:01 >> There was one man who saw
12:02 Johnny Barnes for the first
12:04 time and he said, "When I saw"
12:06 "this man standing there on"
12:07 "the street corner,"
12:08 "I expected him to"
12:10 "come out to me and ask me"
12:11 "for money, but when he"
12:12 "didn't ask me for money,"
12:13 "I didn't understand!"
12:14 "What's this guy doing there?"
12:15 >> Another lady asked,
12:17 "Why would a person go out"
12:19 "there in the middle"
12:20 "of the night, in the rain,"
12:21 "in the thunder,"
12:22 "the lightning."
12:24 "He's there with a rain suit"
12:25 "and an umbrella when it's"
12:27 "raining with one message:"
12:29 "I love you."
12:30 "I don't even say that"
12:31 "to the people I love."
12:33 "I don't understand where"
12:34 "that is coming from."
12:36 >> I'll tell you where it's
12:37 coming from,
12:37 it's coming from this book,
12:38 the Bible
12:39 and from Jonhny's relationship
12:41 with the God of the Bible,
12:42 the God who is love.
12:44 In Psalm chapter 81, verse 10
12:47 God says...
12:52 >> That's precisely what
12:54 Johnny did every single day.
12:56 He opened wide his mouth
12:58 in prayer.
12:59 These are some of Johnny's own
13:01 words and his prayers.
13:03 Listen to this:
13:04 Johnny said...
13:15 And this is how he prays...
13:50 >> Can you see and hear how
13:52 Johnny Barnes was so soaked
13:53 and saturated in the love of
13:54 God that he couldn't help
13:56 spilling over into the lives
13:58 of everyone he met.
14:00 You know, Jesus identified the
14:02 credentials of His followers
14:04 in this way when He stated:
14:13 >> Johnny Barnes lived that
14:15 message because he wasn't
14:16 afraid to say to everyone he
14:18 met, "I love you."
14:20 Did you know he even said it
14:22 to the Queen of England?
14:23 >> It's true.
14:24 Her Majesty,
14:25 Queen Elizabeth II
14:27 visited Bermuda in 2009
14:29 and when she met Johnny Barnes
14:30 to give him a certificate of
14:32 honour, he said to her,
14:35 "I love you"
14:36 "and I am praying for you."
14:38 >> And the Queen responded:
14:40 "And I love you, too."
14:41 >> Wow!
14:43 Can you imagine Her Majesty,
14:44 Queen Elizabeth II saying
14:46 those words to you?
14:47 "And I love you, too."
14:49 >> God's word says..
15:02 >> So there are approximately
15:04 6,500 languages spoken in the
15:07 world today.
15:08 >> So how many of those
15:09 do you speak?
15:11 >> I'd say maybe half, 3,250.
15:14 That would be impressive if
15:16 you did.
15:17 >> If I met someone who could
15:19 speak ten languages fluently,
15:22 I would be very impressed.
15:24 >> Me, too!
15:25 The Bible says that as
15:26 impressive as that would be,
15:28 if I could speak all the
15:29 languages of men and of angels,
15:32 but do not have love
15:34 then I would be an annoying
15:36 distraction like a resounding
15:39 gong that's always booming
15:41 or a clanging cymbal.
15:43 >> Verse 2 of I Corinthians
15:45 chapter 13 says...
15:59 >> So no matter how high
16:02 your education,
16:04 how deep your understanding of
16:05 prophetic mysteries
16:07 or if you should possess such
16:09 great faith and have power
16:11 even to work miracles
16:13 yet without love those gifts
16:15 would be worthless.
16:17 >> In the heart and mind
16:19 of God, love is clearly the
16:21 most essential of all
16:23 character traits.
16:24 >> Yes, it is.
16:26 And look at this simple man,
16:28 Johnny Barnes,
16:29 a retired bus driver
16:31 but the love that he
16:32 demonstrated caught
16:34 the attention of everyone
16:35 that he met,
16:37 even the Queen of England.
16:40 >> Verse 3 of
16:41 I Corinthians 13 says...
16:55 >> So if you didn't have any
16:56 genuine love in your heart,
16:59 even if you gave all your
17:00 money to feed the poor,
17:01 that act would not win the
17:04 favour of God.
17:05 >> Correct.
17:06 >> And even if I was
17:09 so enthusiastic about my faith
17:11 that I were to be burnt
17:13 at the stake and receive a
17:15 martyr's death,
17:17 yet if my fervent faith were
17:20 not activated by love,
17:23 I would be regarded by God as
17:24 some kind of deluded
17:25 enthusiast or an ambitious
17:27 hypocrite of some kind.
17:29 >> That's painfully true also.
17:32 >> As humans, we are
17:34 desperately complex creatures.
17:37 >> We can perform what appear
17:39 to be impressive acts of
17:40 kindness and love,
17:42 but they may be entirely
17:44 motivated by a heart that is
17:46 soaked and saturated in
17:47 selfishness,
17:49 a heart that says,
17:50 "Look at me! Look at me!"
17:52 "Look at how good I am!"
17:54 >> Mmhmm.
17:55 This is a trap that can catch
17:56 every person because God's
17:58 word warns us
18:00 that the human...
18:06 And then the question comes:
18:08 who can understand it?
18:10 The Lord quickly answers:
18:17 >> We look at outward
18:18 appearances, but only God sees
18:21 the heart and knows its true
18:22 condition and motives.
18:24 >> That is why a man like
18:26 Johnny Barnes felt motivated
18:28 every day to wake up at 2:00
18:29 in the morning
18:31 to open his Bible,
18:32 to open his heart before the
18:34 Lord of love,
18:36 to seek God in prayer,
18:38 to honestly examine
18:40 his own heart,
18:41 and to ask the
18:42 Almighty Creator to fill him
18:44 with His Holy Spirit,
18:46 to fill him with the
18:47 love of God.
18:48 >> The scriptures tell us that
18:50 God is Love
18:51 and that He wants us to love
18:53 one another.
18:54 When you are soaked and
18:55 saturated in God's love,
18:58 when you are filled with His
18:59 Holy Spirit of love,
19:02 that love fills you.
19:04 It overflows and it spills
19:06 over into the lives
19:07 of other people.
19:09 René: That is genuine love
19:12 and only the almighty powerful
19:14 working of the Holy Spirit
19:16 can transform our hearts and
19:18 fill us with the love
19:20 that is completely free from
19:22 complaining, criticizing,
19:24 competing, and comparing
19:27 ourselves with one another.

22:30 how do I become filled
22:32 with Holy Spirit of God?
22:34 >> Jesus gave the answer when
22:36 He said, "Ask and it will be"
22:38 "given to you,"
22:39 "seek and you will find,"
22:41 "knock and the door will"
22:43 "be opened to you."
22:44 >> When she was a little girl,
22:46 our youngest daughter,
22:47 Miclain, once asked me
22:49 for a pony.
22:50 And I made a deal with her.
22:52 I told her, "If you get a job"
22:54 "and you earn enough money"
22:55 "to pay for half, then I'll"
22:57 "pay for the other half,"
22:58 "the price of the pony."
23:00 >> It didn't take too long
23:02 and Miclain was riding her
23:03 very own pony.
23:05 Mike: And I was very happy
23:07 to help her to get that pony.
23:09 But you know, it's not the
23:11 same with the Holy Spirit.
23:13 God gives us His Holy Spirit
23:14 without us paying
23:16 a single cent.
23:18 >> In Luke 11, verse 13
23:20 Jesus shows us how to become
23:23 filled with the Holy Spirit
23:24 when He said these words:
23:38 >> So ask and you will receive
23:40 the Holy Spirit.
23:42 >> That is exactly what
23:43 Johnny Barnes did when he woke
23:45 up at 2:00 in the morning.
23:46 He asked for God to fill him
23:48 with the Holy Spirit.
23:50 >> And God faithfully filled
23:51 his heart and his mouth with
23:53 the wonderful words of life
23:55 and love to speak to the
23:57 people passing by in Bermuda.
23:59 >> From the time he retired at
24:01 the age of 63, until he died
24:04 at the age of 93,
24:06 Johnny Barnes stood on the
24:08 corner of Crow Lane shouting
24:10 to the people:
24:11 "I love you!"
24:13 because that's what God told
24:15 him to do.
24:16 >> So for the last thirty
24:18 years of his life,
24:19 from 3:45 until 10:00 in
24:22 the morning,
24:23 rain or shine,
24:24 five days a week
24:25 from Monday to Friday,
24:26 Johnny Barnes showed up and
24:28 freely shared a simple
24:30 message of love.
24:32 >> We want to share with you
24:34 this last tribute to Johnny's
24:35 life which was filmed the year
24:38 before he died when he was
24:39 92 years of age.
