00:25 us to "walk in love as Christ
00:28 also has loved us and given
00:31 Himself for us, an offering and
00:33 a sacrifice to God."
00:35 >> It was His deep love for you
00:37 that compelled Jesus to pay the
00:39 supreme price so that He can
00:41 live with you in heaven
00:43 eternally.
00:45 >> And one day, Jesus will

01:11 for Him and He will save us.
01:13 This is the Lord, we have waited
01:16 for Him. We will be glad and

01:25 >> Our guest, Dr. David Sloan,
01:27 is back with us to share the

01:33 him and how God's dream for his
01:37 life became his dream, too.
01:39 >> So we will be right back to

02:14 >> Hello and welcome and thank
02:16 you for joining us on It Is
02:17 Written Canada. Last week we
02:19 were talking to Dr. David Sloan
02:22 and he was sharing a miraculous,
02:25 amazing conversion experience
02:27 that he had. And sometimes we
02:30 want those experiences to be
02:31 just an instant thing, that
02:33 everything changes
02:35 automatically. And he was
02:37 telling us about how he grew up
02:39 in a pastor's home and how he
02:41 had drifted away from the Lord
02:44 and how the music industry had a
02:45 real tight hold upon him. And
02:48 so, Dr. Sloan, we thank you for
02:50 joining us and you have your
02:51 lovely wife, Erika, here with us
02:53 and we're going to be talking to
02:54 you a little bit later in the
02:56 journey as we go along with
02:58 this, Erika. So, Dr. Sloan, you
03:00 shared about how the music
03:03 industry had -- you had been
03:05 successful and how it kind of
03:07 pulled you away from God and you
03:09 had forgotten about God.
03:11 Although He hadn't forgotten
03:12 about you, He sent someone to
03:14 talk to you, miraculously, and
03:16 you looked for a sign because
03:18 you wanted to know, hey, is this
03:19 for real? And God gave you that
03:21 sign and spoke to you and there
03:24 was a great conversion that
03:25 happened in your life and you
03:27 surrendered your life to the
03:28 Lord. You had some obstacles
03:29 along the way though --
03:30 objections: should I do this and
03:34 if I give my heart to the Lord,
03:36 maybe He's going to pull me out
03:38 of everything I know and how am
03:41 I going to go forward with
03:42 that? And your friend assured
03:43 you, just surrender to the Lord
03:45 and He will help you. And He
03:47 opened your eyes and now you're
03:49 going to continue telling us
03:51 about what you went through at
03:52 that point. So would you like to
03:54 share --
03:55 >> Well, you know, I could
03:57 gradually see that the work that
04:00 I was doing was really not
04:02 furthering God's work in this
04:04 world. The question was, as you
04:07 said, is the hold that this had
04:10 on me and the, sort of, question
04:13 about where would I go, you
04:16 know. But what really turned
04:18 things around was -- I was with
04:21 the show band and we were
04:23 performing in Montreal and then
04:25 we were to then perform in the
04:28 eastern provinces, I think it
04:29 was New Brunswick. And I had
04:31 lent my van in order for them to
04:33 be able to carry the equipment
04:35 and so at the end, Saturday
04:38 night, when we were all
04:41 finished, they all took off and
04:42 said, "We'll see you in New
04:43 Brunswick." And I was left to
04:44 myself to bring all the
04:47 equipment; late at night,
04:49 driving through the night,
04:50 through, you know... So packed
04:55 up everything and I got in and
04:57 started driving and this was May
05:00 or June and here I am, driving
05:03 in the mountains -- they're not
05:04 mountains like western Canada,
05:06 but they're fairly large, sort
05:09 of hilly areas, and I was
05:11 driving through that and all of
05:13 a sudden, a freak snow storm.
05:14 May or June. And my van at the
05:20 time had bald tires and it was
05:22 stacked with equipment so high
05:26 centre of gravity and I was
05:29 going down a hill, a very steep
05:33 hill, and I started to lose
05:35 control. I could feel the van
05:38 going. And I was looking ahead
05:41 and all I could see was a steep
05:43 cliff and as I was going the van
05:46 just -- because there was no
05:48 traction it just turned right
05:50 around and I knew I was going
05:52 over the cliff. There was no
05:54 question in my mind, I thought,
05:56 "This is it, this is the end of
05:58 my life." And so as it came
06:02 around, it all of a sudden felt
06:05 like I'd hit a pole or a post or
06:07 something because it just
06:08 crunched to a stop. And I was
06:11 shaking like a leaf, I could
06:14 barely -- you know how when
06:15 you're so -- you could hardly --
06:17 >> The adrenaline is rushing.
06:17 Yeah.
06:19 >> I could hardly even walk I
06:20 was shaking so much, but I got
06:21 out and I went to the back to
06:24 look for that pole or post or
06:26 whatever that stopped me, and
06:28 there was nothing there.
06:30 Absolutely nothing there. And,
06:32 you know, it hit me so hard, I
06:35 realized, you know, Satan was
06:37 bent on destroying me because I
06:40 was planning to leave the music
06:43 business, that was in my heart.
06:45 He had no more use for me, he
06:47 was going to destroy me and that
06:48 God sent a mighty angel to stand
06:50 and stop that van from going
06:52 over that cliff. I was so
06:54 absolutely convinced of that. I
06:57 got back in the van, I sobbed
07:00 for what seemed like a long,
07:02 long, long time, I was just --
07:04 and I said, "Lord, I am going to
07:07 leave this business now." So I
07:11 made my way slowly back to a
07:13 motel and I got down on my knees
07:15 and I told the Lord, "I'm
07:17 leaving, and I'm leaving this up
07:19 to you, Lord, you show me the
07:21 way that I need to go, but I",
07:24 you know, "I'm leaving and I'm
07:27 not going to come back." So when
07:29 I got to New Brunswick the next
07:31 day, I told the band leader that
07:33 I was, you know, going to be
07:36 quitting the band from then on.
07:40 But now what was going on was I
07:45 was having severe health issues
07:48 and for a period of time through
07:51 my life, I was very sick, I was
07:53 a sickly child, I had a lot of
07:55 respiratory disorders and
07:57 allergies and things like that.
08:00 And so I was OK for a little
08:03 while, but then getting in the
08:05 band and being on the road and
08:06 the kind of diet that we were on
08:09 and the lifestyle and, you know,
08:11 the hard living that we did, it
08:15 took its toll. And I was pretty
08:18 much in every emergency room in
08:21 most of the cities and towns
08:23 across Ontario and Canada just
08:26 to get help. I can say this: I
08:29 never missed one night of
08:30 performance, but some nights
08:32 were pretty shaky. And so one
08:37 night we were playing in
08:39 Toronto, as a matter of fact we
08:40 had a bunch of friends out and
08:42 one of my doctor friends
08:44 introduced a chiropractor to me
08:46 who was studying to be a
08:48 naturopath and I said to this
08:54 particular doctor, I said, "You
08:57 know, I know I'm not well. I've
09:00 been to my family doctor, he's
09:02 given me a clean bill of health,
09:05 I've had the blood work and
09:06 checked me over, but I know I'm
09:07 not well." And he said, "Well",
09:10 you know, "come into my office
09:12 and I'll give you a checkup."
09:15 And so I did that and after he
09:18 had spent a couple of hours of
09:21 thoroughly going over
09:22 everything, we sat down at his
09:25 desk and he said, "Well,
09:28 basically, I figure you have
09:30 about two years to live." And as
09:37 I was thinking in my mind as he
09:39 said this, you know, I've just
09:40 been married to my dear wife for
09:44 about a year, how am I going to
09:46 explain this to her? Here I've
09:48 just married this man and now I
09:50 have to prepare for his funeral.
09:53 And so I said, you know, "I knew
09:57 I wasn't well, but I didn't
09:59 think I was that bad." He says,
10:01 "Well, your whole system is
10:04 basically shutting down. All
10:05 your major systems: your immune
10:07 system, your gastrointestinal,
10:08 digestive, respiratory,
10:11 elimination, all of these
10:13 different areas, cardiovascular,
10:16 as well, are being so gravely
10:21 affected by", you know, "what
10:24 you've been going through in the
10:26 last two or three years, you
10:28 really don't have much left."
10:30 And I said, "Well, certainly
10:32 there's got to be some hope." He
10:34 says, "Yes, there is hope. But
10:36 this is what you have to do." He
10:38 says, "You need to change your
10:40 diet, you need to change your
10:41 lifestyle and I'm going to give
10:42 you some natural medicine." So I
10:46 said, "So exactly what things do
10:49 I need to change then?" He says,
10:51 "Well, your diet you need to
10:52 change to be a total vegetarian
10:55 or a vegan." And you've got to
10:58 understand that, you know, I was
11:00 -- junk food, high-sugar,
11:03 high-fat, meat, potatoes,
11:05 things, you know, type of diet.
11:09 But really, when you're faced
11:12 with that kind of a thing, what
11:14 choice do you have? And I
11:16 remember Erika asking me when I
11:20 went through the list of things
11:22 I couldn't eat, she says, "Well,
11:23 is there anything left that you
11:25 can eat?" (chuckles) And, you
11:29 know, it was pretty basic in
11:31 those early days. So that was
11:32 the diet part of things, the
11:35 lifestyle thing was, you know,
11:37 you've got to get into a
11:39 healthier environment. You know
11:41 the bars, smoke and, you know,
11:43 in those days there was no
11:45 filters, it was completely --
11:46 and people smoked inside as well
11:49 as outside. And the herbs that
11:52 he recommended were two herbs:
11:53 myrrh and slippery elm which
11:55 are, you know, known very well
11:58 today to have very wonderful
12:01 properties in helping to heal
12:03 inflammation and antioxidant
12:06 properties to help heal cells.
12:08 So I had started in on that
12:13 pretty much right away. I mean,
12:15 with a death sentence like that,
12:17 I just felt that I have to give
12:20 it all I've got and I did. And
12:22 my wife can testify to that fact
12:24 that I went from what I was in
12:27 one day to being a total
12:29 vegetarian the next. And here we
12:32 were grappling with this kind of
12:34 a change.
12:36 >> So, Erika, this is where your
12:37 journey starts because obviously
12:40 you knew that your husband
12:42 wasn't healthy and he wasn't
12:44 doing well and then he comes
12:46 with this prescription: we need
12:47 to change our diet. So how did
12:51 your journey start with that?
12:54 >> Well, it was quite a shock
12:56 for sure. And of course we knew
12:57 no one else who was a vegetarian
12:59 at the time. There wasn't
13:02 internet to go on and get
13:03 recipes. There wasn't even like
13:07 soy milk or other dairy-free
13:09 choices like there are today, it
13:11 was totally different back then
13:13 in the 70s. So it was a
13:14 challenge. It was a real
13:16 learning experience for both of
13:17 us.
13:20 >> The good news is is that I'm
13:21 still here today and that's
13:23 40-odd years later. And God has
13:28 blessed us with amazing -- this
13:31 journey has just been absolutely
13:33 amazing.
13:35 >> So in changing, what really
13:37 helped you to find some recipes
13:40 to find a new direction in terms
13:44 of -- I mean, once you change
13:46 your health, could you see that
13:48 God was working through this?
13:49 Did He help you to find recipes
13:54 and help people -- I guess find
13:56 a community of people who would
13:57 support you?
13:59 >> Yeah. And this is again
14:01 unmistakably how God led in our
14:03 lives. And we heard of a
14:07 vegetarian restaurant that was
14:09 in Port Dover, which was not too
14:11 far from where we were living.
14:14 And we jumped at the opportunity
14:15 to go because, you know, eating
14:17 baked potatoes and a few cooked
14:20 vegetables and salad every day
14:22 was starting to get a little bit
14:23 old. And so we went to this
14:26 vegetarian restaurant which was
14:28 only open for a couple months
14:29 and then it closed so we
14:32 happened to just get there
14:32 probably before it was closing.
14:35 And it just happened that while
14:38 we were there, there was a young
14:39 gentleman who was sharing some
14:41 pictures with the two owners of
14:44 this vegetarian restaurant. And
14:47 we were kind of curious, I was
14:49 helping my father-in-law in
14:50 photography at the time and
14:51 Erika and I were doing weddings
14:52 and things like that so we just
14:55 kind of, you know, were looking
14:57 over and before you know it we
14:58 were over there sitting with
15:00 them looking at these pictures.
15:02 And so this fellow, his name is
15:05 Jerry, he was relating to us an
15:10 amazing conversion experience
15:12 that he had. And he said -- I
15:13 said to him, "Well, that is
15:15 absolutely an amazing story."
15:17 And I share a little bit about
15:18 my conversion experience and
15:20 then the fact that we were drawn
15:21 to, you know, for health reasons
15:24 this diet that we were given.
15:29 And he said, "Well, I have a
15:31 book that was written in the
15:33 1800's that talks about this
15:35 very thing that you're doing and
15:38 the research", you know, "that's
15:40 come many, many, many years
15:42 later is proving all that she
15:43 said is true." And at the time,
15:46 I was starting to study in
15:48 natural medicine and nutrition
15:50 and he said, "You should read
15:52 this book." So sure enough, he
15:55 made sure I got that book. He
15:57 dropped it off and I started
15:58 reading it. It was called
15:59 Counsels on Diet and Foods by
16:01 Ellen G. White. So one thing led
16:06 to another as I read through
16:07 this book, I was becoming more
16:09 and more convicted that God
16:11 really had a health message. Not
16:14 only did He have, you know, the
16:17 blueprint, the map, you know, or
16:20 the guide for the way we could
16:24 live in the Bible, but He also
16:25 had a health message in the
16:27 Bible. And so we had started to
16:29 discover that what we were doing
16:31 was very closely connected to
16:33 what God wanted us to do and all
16:35 tied in with this whole, you
16:38 know, inviting Jesus into my
16:40 life and here all of this was
16:43 unfolding. And so Erika and I
16:47 began to become more and more
16:52 aware of this and I got together
16:58 with Jerry on occasions. He
17:00 actually opened a bake shop in
17:02 Port Dover and I, being out of
17:04 the music business and not
17:05 having a whole lot to do, I
17:09 offered to help him. And so
17:11 while we were there we would
17:12 listen to Christian tapes on,
17:16 you know, different Bible topics
17:18 and I was getting all this, you
17:20 know, coming at me and was
17:24 sharing a little bit with Erika
17:25 and eventually we became -- and
17:31 I should say, before that we
17:32 studied with a number of
17:34 different churches and searching
17:36 and -- my feeling is is that
17:39 when we changed our diet, that
17:42 that's what cleared our minds to
17:44 be able to see more clearly
17:48 spiritually. And spiritually, we
17:50 started to understand. And this
17:52 is something that I share with
17:53 many people is that, when you
17:55 change your diet to a
17:57 vegetarian, a vegan diet, all of
18:00 a sudden you find that you are
18:02 more spiritually aware, that you
18:04 discern things much more
18:06 spiritually and that God can
18:09 actually communicate with you
18:11 better on a spiritual level. So
18:14 long story short, God was
18:17 unerringly leading us to the
18:20 Seventh-day Adventist Church.
18:22 Through many other churches and
18:25 studies and so on, it was an
18:28 amazing journey in itself how we
18:30 were led to this church. And we
18:32 felt that this church spoke the
18:34 truth to us, that this was a
18:36 church that had the truth, that
18:39 if there was anything that
18:41 coincided clearly with what the
18:44 Bible said in all aspects of
18:46 life, was the Seventh-day
18:48 Adventist Church.
18:50 >> So, Dr. Sloan, you
18:52 mentioned that you were studying
18:54 natural medicine. How did you
18:55 get into natural medicine?
18:58 >> Well, you know, I got such
19:01 amazing results in my own health
19:05 that I thought -- and of course
19:06 this is with all-natural
19:07 remedies -- I thought that if
19:10 this can help me so much, how
19:12 many other people can be helped?
19:14 And I really feel that God
19:16 inspired me by that. I went
19:21 thinking, "Well, maybe I should
19:22 open a health food store." And
19:24 we tried on several attempts and
19:26 the Lord shut the door on those.
19:29 And I remember we were visiting
19:31 relatives in Europe, Erika's
19:34 side of the family, and on the
19:36 plane, again I broke down and I
19:38 prayed, "Lord, I cannot get
19:43 anything right. I try this, I
19:46 try that, but I'm going to just
19:49 totally put my life and the
19:52 direction my life is going to
19:53 take in Your hands." And it was
19:57 very clear after I did that that
19:59 the Lord wanted me to go into
20:01 the profession of, you know,
20:04 being a natural doctor and
20:06 helping people with their
20:07 health.
20:08 >> And now today you have a very
20:10 successful clinic that you are
20:14 running and that you're working
20:15 with and that's just amazing.
20:17 And I believe you work there,
20:18 too, Erika.
20:20 >> Yes. Yes, that's right. David
20:21 and I have worked together for
20:21 many, many years. But I really
20:24 believe that God has given David
20:27 the gift of healing. He gives
20:30 him the wisdom to know what to
20:32 do with all these different
20:34 cases. People have been many,
20:36 many places before they've come
20:38 to David. Often he's the last
20:40 resort with their health issue,
20:43 that they just, they haven't
20:44 gotten the results that they
20:44 need. And I just have seen it
20:47 over the years so many times
20:50 that he knows the right thing to
20:52 recommend for people. It's God's
20:54 doing, it is.
20:57 >> And probably your experience
21:00 of going through all of that,
21:02 you know what they're going
