00:19 >>John Bradshaw: This is "It Is Written."
00:21 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me.
00:23 Some things take time.
00:26 That pie you put in the oven?
00:28 That's going to take 30-40 minutes to bake.
00:30 No matter what you do, you need to give it half an hour or so
00:34 or it's not going to be what you want it to be.
00:37 There's a process you have to follow.
00:39 You make the pie, you put it in a hot oven, and you wait.
00:44 These things take time. There's a process.
00:48 You hurt your knee; you have to have surgery.
00:50 The doctor tells you it's going to be six months to a year
00:53 before you can get back to normal.
00:55 You might be jogging in nine months, say, maybe six.
00:59 But you're not going to be running six or eight weeks
01:02 after damaging your ACL. That's just not going to happen.
01:06 You wish it would, but it won't.
01:08 These things take time. There's a process.
01:12 The married couple who want to have a baby
01:14 know how long they'll have to wait after conception.
01:17 Since the dawn of time, this has taken nine months.
01:22 And wishing that process could be sped up
01:25 won't change a single thing.
01:27 These things take time. There's a process.
01:32 Now, Jesus said the same thing about spiritual growth.
01:36 And understanding that is critical in a life of faith.
01:41 Look with me at Mark 4, starting in verse 26.
01:44 He said, "The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed
01:49 "on the ground, and should sleep by night and rise by day,
01:54 "and the seed should sprout and grow,
01:56 "he himself does not know how.
01:58 "For the earth yields crops by itself: first the blade,
02:03 "then the head, [and] after that the full grain in the head.
02:07 "But when the grain ripens, immediately he puts in
02:10 the sickle, because the harvest has come."
02:14 Jesus is talking about spiritual growth,
02:17 and He describes that process.
02:20 A man sows seed.
02:21 The kingdom of heaven getting into you and becoming
02:24 more and more a part of you and transforming you
02:27 is like seed being planted in the ground.
02:30 Now, every year my wife and I grow a garden.
02:34 It's not going to win any prizes.
02:36 Sometimes "garden" might be too grand a word, to be honest.
02:41 We're going to get some tomatoes planted, a few other things.
02:44 We'll have sunflowers, just because we love them.
02:47 And we'll get some seeds in the ground in little starter pots,
02:50 and then we...wait.
02:53 The seed packet will typically tell you: 30 days to harvest,
02:57 60 days to harvest, 90 days to harvest.
03:01 And there are times along the way that you have
03:02 to remind yourself that, yes, one day these little things
03:06 will actually end up on your dinner table.
03:09 But you cannot speed up the process.
03:12 A tomato's probably going to take you from 60-100 days.
03:16 Jalapeños will be about 80 days.
03:18 You're not going to change that.
03:19 Now, radishes you'll get in 20-25 days, but eggplant,
03:24 more likely 120, maybe longer.
03:27 It'll depend a little bit on where you live,
03:29 but what we know is that these things take time.
03:33 There's a process.
03:35 In the Bible, Jesus spoke a lot about seeds.
03:38 And wanting to find out more about seeds,
03:40 I came to southern Missouri,
03:43 incidentally about 10 minutes or so
03:45 from where Laura Ingalls Wilder and her husband, Almanzo,
03:48 lived for 60 years after moving here from South Dakota.
03:52 I wondered if I could get some insights
03:55 into the little miracles that are seeds.
03:59 All right, Weston, so tell me something interesting
04:02 about seeds that most of us don't know.
04:06 >>Weston Adams: A lot of people don't know that a coconut
04:08 is a seed. >>John: It's a seed?
04:09 >>Weston: It's one big seed.
04:11 Another thing that people don't know is that some seeds
04:14 actually have, um, they measure temperature,
04:17 and they won't germinate
04:19 until they've had a period of cold weather
04:21 because that seed wants to know that it's going through winter
04:24 before it will sprout.
04:25 >>John: Do you notice much variation between seeds?
04:29 Perhaps the question's obvious.
04:31 This seed will function this way;
04:33 that seed will function that way.
04:35 They're not all exactly the same.
04:37 >>Weston: No, they're not.
04:38 >>John: My question, I suppose, really is,
04:40 they've been programmed differently, right?
04:42 >>Weston: Yes, very different genes, very different, um,
04:45 product when you grow-- you know, you get this
04:48 out of one seed; you get this out of another seed--
04:51 huge variation.
04:53 And even, even within cabbages or even within this species,
04:57 you'll have large seeds; you'll have small seeds; you'll have,
05:00 you'll have red cabbages; you'll have pointed ones;
05:03 you'll have round ones; you'll have flat ones.
05:05 It's all in the, the genes that are locked in that seed
05:09 ready to, ready to burst out.
05:11 >>John: So, this cabbage, it's a magnificent thing.
05:15 What did it start off as?
05:18 >>Weston: This cabbage started this past late fall
05:24 as one of these.
05:26 This is the seed that actually grows
05:27 this specific variety of cabbage.
05:30 >>John: So that little thing there,
05:31 one of those tiny seeds-- >>Weston: Yup.
05:34 >>John: ...grows into that? >>Weston: Yup.
05:35 >>John: All itself produces more seeds--
05:37 >>Weston: Correct.
05:39 >>John: ...starts like a seed in the ground, and grows up--
05:43 it's a great object lesson, isn't it?
05:45 >>Weston: It is. You know, we were talking about
05:47 how you can't speed up the process,
05:49 but you can delay the process.
05:51 If you don't give the right conditions,
05:53 this isn't going to turn into this,
05:54 or it's going to take a lot longer.
05:56 >>John: There's a process.
05:58 Jesus said, "For the earth yields crops by itself:
06:03 "first the blade, then the head,
06:06 "after that the full grain in the head.
06:09 "But when the grain ripens,
06:11 "immediately he puts in the sickle,
06:13 because the harvest has come."
06:15 And it's that process that causes some people to stumble--
06:19 two ways. One, you get some people who feel like
06:22 all they have to do is come to Jesus,
06:23 and that's kind of everything.
06:25 But that's not kind of everything,
06:26 because Jesus wants to prepare you for the harvest.
06:30 He wants you to grow and become the most complete reflection
06:34 of Jesus that heaven can transform you into.
06:37 Now, the other person who stumbles is the person
06:40 who feels like they're not good enough for heaven
06:43 and they never will be.
06:45 Now, I'm going to shock you.
06:47 There's some truth in that statement,
06:49 in fact, a lot of truth.
06:51 We'll look at it together in just a moment.

07:35 Did you ever meet someone who thought
07:37 they could never be good enough for eternal life?
07:40 You might have been one of those people.
07:42 You might still be one.
07:43 If that's the case, then this is a divine appointment.
07:48 Notice what Jesus said in Mark, chapter 4.
07:51 He compared the kingdom of heaven,
07:54 the work of God's saving grace, to a man planting seeds.
07:59 Somehow--the man doesn't know how--the seed grows.
08:03 Jesus said, "The earth yields crops by itself:
08:08 first the blade [appears]"-- a little ribbon of green
08:11 that pokes its head up out of the ground.
08:14 At first you can hardly see it, then it grows,
08:18 and the head of grain appears.
08:20 Then the fully formed grain is in the head of the plant,
08:23 and then it goes on to ripen and is ready for the harvest.
08:28 And Jesus said this is an illustration
08:31 of how the kingdom of heaven works in a life.
08:35 So here's what you've got to know,
08:37 and you can learn this from horticulture.
08:40 When you plant a seed in the ground, what happens?
08:44 Well, usually what happens is completely invisible
08:47 to the eye, but something is happening,
08:51 something transformational.
08:53 Now, let's apply this to somebody's life--maybe yours.
08:57 You come to faith in Jesus, and you're expecting what?
09:00 Well, you have the absolute assurance of salvation
09:03 through Jesus because of what He did for you
09:06 when He died on the cross for your sins.
09:08 You can have peace in your heart.
09:11 But when you come to Jesus and you start to grow,
09:16 what was it Jesus said? "First the blade."
09:20 It's believed that the largest tree in the entire world
09:23 right now, by volume, is the General Sherman,
09:27 a giant sequoia growing in Sequoia National Park
09:30 in California, just 25 miles or so, as the crow flies,
09:34 from Mount Whitney, the tallest mountain in the lower 48.
09:38 The General Sherman is 275 feet tall,
09:42 three-quarters of the length of a football field.
09:45 It's 36 feet across at the base.
09:49 The General Sherman has a volume
09:51 of 52,500 cubic feet.
09:55 By comparison, an 80-feet tall spruce tree is going to have
09:59 a volume of around 100 feet.
10:02 The General Sherman is gigantic.
10:06 It's also 2,500 years old or maybe older.
10:12 It was growing when Jesus was on the earth.
10:15 It may have been growing when Nebuchadnezzar invaded
10:18 Jerusalem and took Daniel captive in 605 BC.
10:23 It's really big,
10:25 but it's been growing a long time.
10:29 They say the tallest tree in the world
10:31 is a tree called Hyperion,
10:33 growing somewhere in Redwood National Park
10:35 in northeastern California.
10:37 At 380 feet tall, it's taller than the tallest building
10:41 in Amarillo, Texas, and that's 31 stories.
10:45 This is a really tall tree.
10:49 And...it's 800 years old.
10:52 See, growth takes time.
10:56 Both of those trees started really small
11:00 but just kept growing.
11:03 And that's what you're to do.
11:04 I don't know where you are as a tree or maybe as a wheat plant.
11:08 Maybe you're the blade, the ear, something else.
11:11 But that's not what's most important.
11:13 What's most important is that you keep on growing.
11:18 Now, there are several things you want to do
11:20 to ensure that you grow spiritually.
11:22 First, put down roots into the Word of God.
11:26 God's Word is alive, and if you get it into your mind,
11:30 if you get it into your heart, it'll not only change you,
11:34 but it will go on changing you.
11:37 Trying to live a genuine Christian life
11:39 without reading the Bible
11:40 is like trying to make water run uphill.
11:44 You just can't do it.
11:45 You've got to get the Word of God into your mind.
11:48 Read it. Memorize it.
11:50 Read it some more-- and believe it.
11:52 Put a seed in the ground, and it'll grow.
11:55 Immerse yourself in the Word of God, and you'll grow.
11:59 No, you won't become Enoch overnight,
12:01 but you'll be saved in Christ, and you'll grow.
12:04 Now, some people are frustrated by the fact
12:06 that they make the same spiritual mistakes
12:08 over and over again.
12:10 Yes, that can be frustrating,
12:12 but here's what you're going to do.
12:13 You're going to read the promises of God
12:16 and bring them to Jesus and claim them.
12:20 Peter wrote this, 2 Peter 1, verse 4:
12:23 "By which have been given to us
12:25 "exceeding great and precious promises,
12:28 "that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature,
12:32 "having escaped the corruption
12:34 that is in the world through lust."
12:36 And keep in mind, this was written by a man
12:39 who had failed Jesus spectacularly.
12:43 So, you have an anger problem?
12:45 You find a promise or a principle in the Bible
12:47 that deals with that,
12:49 and you bring it to God, and you claim it.
12:52 Start with Proverbs 15, verse 1:
12:54 "A soft answer turns away wrath,
12:57 but a harsh word stirs up anger."
13:01 You tell God you want that promise,
13:03 that principle carried out in your life.
13:06 Tell God you're tired of losing your temper.
13:09 Tell Him you don't want to.
13:10 Tell Him that in your humanity you are too weak to change,
13:14 and tell Him you expect to see Proverbs 15:1
13:19 play out in your experience.
13:20 And bring it to Him again and again.
13:23 You are planting seeds when you do that,
13:26 and you're preparing for the harvest.
13:28 Or you could bring to God Ephesians 4:31 and 32--
13:32 "Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking
13:36 "be put away from you, with all malice.
13:39 "And be kind to one another, tenderhearted,
13:42 forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you."
13:47 Tell God you're willing for that to be done in your life.
13:51 James 1, verse 20:
13:53 "For the wrath of man
13:54 does not produce the righteousness of God."
13:57 Same again.
13:58 "Lord, I see that; I want that.
14:01 Through Your presence in my life I believe I have that."
14:06 Now, you're weak? Philippians 4:13 is for you:
14:09 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
14:13 You're struggling to hold it together?
14:15 Isaiah 40, verse 31:
14:17 "But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength;
14:21 "they shall mount up with wings as eagles;
14:24 "they shall run, and not be weary;
14:27 and they shall walk, and not faint."
14:30 You are planting seeds and preparing for the harvest.
14:34 You're bringing God His Word and telling Him you believe
14:38 there's power in His Word to do what it says it can do
14:41 and that you're expecting to see
14:43 that power unleashed in your life.
14:46 And now you're going to start getting over
14:47 some of those humps in your Christian experience.
14:50 This idea, "I'm not good enough,"
14:54 the fact is that's true; no one is good enough, only Jesus,
15:00 which is why you claim Him as your Savior
15:03 and believe in His goodness.
15:05 You do that every day, every day.
15:09 Christ is your righteousness.
15:11 Believe that, and you'll never be the same again.
15:16 And if the devil ever tells you again
15:18 that you're not good enough,
15:20 just ignore him and thank God for the gift of Jesus.
15:26 You don't want to be good enough.
15:28 You want to be a Christian,
15:30 trusting in Jesus to live His life in you.
15:34 Look at these two verses.
15:35 They are life changing.
15:38 First, Galatians 2 in verse 20:
15:40 "I have been crucified with Christ;
15:42 "it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me;
15:47 "and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith
15:50 in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me."
15:54 You see that?
15:55 Jesus lives in you, and you live by faith in Him.
16:01 And Philippians 2:13,
16:03 "It is God who works in you
16:05 both to will and to do for His good pleasure."
16:09 There it is again:
16:10 Jesus works in you to do His will in your life.

22:13 so he sends pests to distract you and slow down your progress.
22:19 Guard against the pests.
22:22 There's another place Jesus spoke about seeds.
22:25 It's John, chapter 12.
22:27 I had to ask somebody about this.
22:29 >>Weston: So, a couple things, uh, people often deal with
22:32 in their own garden is deer.
22:33 A lot of people plant a beautiful garden,
22:35 and then one day, oh no!
22:37 You know, the deer have wiped it out.
22:39 So, there are things you can do for that.
22:41 Um, obviously staking a dog [laughing] out by the garden
22:44 is a, is one good option.
22:46 Another option is you can get lightweight deer netting
22:49 that, um, it's easy to put up; it's easy to take down.
22:52 But the way it works is it's,
22:54 it's, since it's almost see-through,
22:56 the deer can't really tell where it starts and, and ends.
22:59 And so they walk up, and they brush up against it,
23:01 and they're like, "Whoa, whoa," and they'll jump back.
23:02 And even though it's really fine, it actually,
23:05 it's pretty effective.
23:06 Another thing people deal with is aphids.
23:09 And aphids are something that can be helped
23:12 with beneficial insects,
23:14 like, in our greenhouses, works really well in a greenhouse.
23:17 You've got a closed-in environment.
23:19 We release thousands of ladybugs.
23:22 And the ladybugs feed on the aphids.
23:24 That helps to reduce the aphid population.
23:27 And there are other beneficials we use,
23:29 such as predatory wasps that, that parasitize the aphids.
23:34 So all these things work together to put pressure
23:39 on the diseases, put pressure on the pests,
23:41 and hopefully suppress them enough
23:43 that they don't cause an issue.
23:45 >>John: Which is consistent with Jesus' teaching when He said,
23:48 "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat
23:53 "falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone;
23:57 but if it dies, it produces much grain."
24:01 Now, where's He going with this?
24:03 "He who loves his life will lose it,
24:07 "and he who hates his life in this world
24:10 "will keep it for eternal life.
24:13 If anyone serves me, let him follow me."
24:17 I wonder if we might not be missing something
24:19 in our Christian experience.
24:21 The call to follow Jesus is a call to something radical.
24:27 It's not some kind of modification.
24:29 It's not a cultural shift.
24:32 A life of following Jesus is described by Jesus as a death,
24:38 followed by living a productive, growing life.
24:43 Takes nothing to carry a Bible, call yourself a believer,
24:46 attend a church.
24:48 What Jesus is looking for is someone who will stand for Him,
24:53 though the heavens fall, someone who will be true,
24:57 no matter what the world around them is doing.
25:00 It's easy to be swept along by society.
25:04 And what we're seeing in the world today
25:06 is preparing people to be caught up in the last great deceptions
25:11 before Jesus returns.
25:13 I'm not talking about being political. That's easy, too.
25:16 Jesus is talking about being a Christian.
25:19 That's someone who puts God first in their life
25:23 and in their lifestyle.
25:26 Jesus said, "He who finds his life will lose it,
25:30 and he who loses his life for my sake will find it."
25:34 He calls you to "love the Lord your God with all your heart,
25:36 with all your soul, and with all your mind."
25:39 If you'll let Jesus have your heart,
25:43 if you'll let the old you die
25:45 and allow Jesus to make you a new creation,
25:48 you'll experience spiritual growth,
25:52 and you won't stop growing.
25:54 You'll grow all the way until the harvest--
25:59 seedtime, hiding God's Word in your heart,
26:02 and harvest, ready for eternity with Jesus.
26:07 You ask God to do that work in your life,
26:10 and He will, completely.
