00:21 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me.
00:24 Once a week a rabbi in New York City travels around Manhattan
00:30 spending a lot of time looking up.
00:33 He's looking to see if the eruv is still intact.
00:37 If it isn't, he calls a construction company,
00:40 and he gets in a cherry picker
00:42 and rises 18 feet above the streets of Manhattan to fix it.
00:46 An "eruv," E-R-U-V, is, at least in this case,
00:51 a clear fishing line strung up
00:53 around most of the island of Manhattan,
00:55 from the southern tip of the island
00:57 all the way to 145th Street in Harlem in the north
01:00 and taking in all of Central Park.
01:03 Now, why does the rabbi do this?
01:06 ♪[soft piano music]♪
01:07 When God gave Moses the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai,
01:10 He said and wrote this:
01:13 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
01:16 "Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
01:19 "but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God.
01:23 "In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son,
01:27 "nor your daughter, nor your male servant,
01:29 "nor your female servant, nor your cattle,
01:32 nor your stranger who is within your gates."
01:35 Exodus 20, verses 8 through 10.
01:38 And observant Jews, as you'd expect, take that seriously.
01:43 So in places like New York City, that presents some challenges.
01:47 For traditional Jews, on the Sabbath day,
01:51 nothing can be carried from one's home into a public space,
01:55 and that includes things such as house keys or a wallet.
02:00 It means no pushing a baby stroller,
02:02 which for some families would mean that there's no way
02:05 they could leave their home on the Sabbath.
02:09 "Eruvim" are found in more than 30 states in the United States
02:13 and in several countries around the world.
02:15 And they function as a workaround, really.
02:18 The rule is, if you're within the eruv,
02:22 you're in your own personal space.
02:24 So therefore you can carry whatever you want.
02:27 The eruv turns a big city area into one big communal backyard.
02:36 Which is interesting, perhaps, to a non-Jew,
02:39 'cause what you have is a rule created by rabbis and not by God
02:45 that severely limits what a person can do on the Sabbath.
02:49 Then another rule is devised to get around the restrictions
02:54 imposed by that first rule.
02:57 Keeping the Sabbath today is largely a Jewish concept.
03:02 But it wasn't always that way.
03:04 You find someone who's got a few miles on the clock
03:06 and ask them what it was like when they were younger,
03:08 and they'll tell you something like,
03:11 "Well, after church we'd go to Grandma's house,
03:13 "and she'd have a special meal prepared, and,
03:16 "and then the rest of the day no one would do any work,
03:18 not even Grandpa. Grandpa wouldn't even work on his farm,"
03:22 because they considered the day to be special,
03:26 and they kept it holy--
03:27 now, not like observant Jews, of course, but holy nonetheless.
03:32 As society has drifted away from the religious
03:35 and embraced the secular,
03:37 there's been a move away from some of the practices
03:40 that once characterized religious faith.
03:43 And not everybody thinks that that's a great idea.
03:46 When Simon & Schuster published the book "The Gift of Rest"
03:50 in 2011, a book written by then senator Joe Lieberman,
03:55 who was Jewish, the book received strong critical acclaim
03:59 from Christian quarters,
04:02 with many people beginning to wonder out loud
04:04 whether Christians weren't missing out on something
04:07 by passing lightly over the Sabbath.
04:10 God gave 10 commandments on Sinai, and we'd have no trouble
04:15 agreeing on the benefits, the blessings,
04:18 and the plain old common sense of keeping them.
04:22 "No other gods before [God]."
04:24 Well, of course.
04:26 If God wasn't God in your life and something else was,
04:29 then God wouldn't be first;
04:31 He'd be second or third or fourth--or worse.
04:35 And then you could never honor the words that Jesus spoke
04:38 when He quoted Deuteronomy 6:5 in Matthew 22:37,
04:44 "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,
04:47 with all your soul, and with all your mind."
04:50 Unless God is first, that just can't happen.
04:54 ♪[soft piano music]♪
04:57 Second commandment: No graven images.
05:00 That's idolatry.
05:02 Praying to statues, bowing before images--
05:05 we can't justify that in any way.
05:08 God has spoken clearly about that.
05:10 It lowers your concept of God and therefore lowers you.
05:15 And you see, the Ten Commandments are good ideas.
05:18 They represent the character of God.
05:21 The third commandment says we shouldn't "take the name
05:24 of the Lord...in vain"-- use it as a common swear word.
05:28 A lot of people do, and it's never right.
05:31 The fourth commandment is the longest:
05:33 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy."
05:35 In fact, it's by far the longest of the Ten Commandments.
05:39 The fifth: "Honor your father and your mother."
05:43 I can't think of a single parent
05:45 who doesn't think that that's a really good idea.
05:49 And by the way, how would society look
05:52 if we actually did take that commandment seriously?
05:55 And what if parents who wished for their children to honor them
05:59 conducted themselves in such a way
06:01 that it would make it easy for children to render that honor?
06:05 Now, that would be something.
06:07 The sixth commandment: "Thou shalt not kill,"
06:10 which actually means, "Thou shalt not murder."
06:13 Any arguments with that one?
06:15 No. We believe in that one, no question.
06:19 Now, there are two of the remaining commandments
06:22 that have fallen out of favor,
06:24 and commandment seven is one of them.
06:26 It says, "Thou shalt not commit adultery."
06:30 That's physical intimacy with someone you're not married to,
06:34 although Jesus said that this even includes
06:36 looking at another person to lust.
06:39 The reason I say this commandment has fallen
06:41 out of favor is that in society, and even in the church,
06:45 there's unfortunately plenty of adultery
06:48 and lust and pornography.
06:52 The eighth commandment is, "Thou shalt not steal."
06:56 Any problem with that one?
06:57 I'll wait while you lock your house and set your alarm
07:00 and lock your car before you answer.
07:03 We love that commandment. We wish everyone did.
07:06 Now, keep in mind, we're briefly reviewing the Ten Commandments,
07:09 and we're seeing that there are real benefits in keeping them.
07:13 They're good for us. They're good for society.
07:16 The ninth commandment:
07:17 "Thou shalt not bear false witness."
07:20 No lying--that's obvious. That's good.
07:23 And the final commandment
07:24 is the other one that's kind of neglected:
07:27 "Thou shalt not covet,"
07:29 which gets to the root of all commandment-breaking.
07:32 Now, coveting is an inappropriate desire to have
07:36 that which isn't yours, that which you have no right to.
07:40 So, of course it's okay to want a better car
07:43 or to admire a nice house.
07:44 This commandment speaks to our inner desires.
07:48 Most moral codes only deal with outward acts.
07:51 This one touches on the thoughts,
07:53 the intents, the desires.
07:55 God cares about that. He sees the heart.
07:59 And seeing as we're not to covet,
08:01 this tells us then that we're not slaves to our desires.
08:05 You want your neighbor's spouse?
08:07 You don't have to. God can give you the victory over that.
08:12 This is not a commandment that you want to forget.
08:15 So why is the fourth commandment kind of forgotten these days?
08:18 And why does it matter?
08:20 I'll tell you in just a moment.

09:14 maybe you remember where you were when 9/11 happened,
09:17 or when the Berlin Wall came down,
09:19 or when Princess Diana died.
09:22 There are some days that are just impossible to forget.
09:26 Now, there's one day that God has asked us to remember,
09:30 but the reality is the majority of people have forgotten.
09:35 When God gave the Ten Commandments,
09:37 He said, "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy."
09:42 But today that's one thing that a lot of people
09:44 really have let go.
09:47 Now, let me mention something, because you'll hear people say,
09:50 "Well, we don't keep the Ten Commandments
09:52 in order to be saved. The Ten Commandments don't save us."
09:56 And they're absolutely right.
09:58 No one should be thinking about the Ten Commandments
10:00 as a means of salvation.
10:03 Salvation comes just one way,
10:05 and that's by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
10:10 Jesus died for our sins, and it's through faith in Him,
10:14 through faith in the blood that He shed for us,
10:16 that we receive salvation from sin.
10:20 As Paul wrote to Titus,
10:21 "Not by works of righteousness which we have done,
10:25 "but according to His mercy He saved us,
10:27 "by the washing of regeneration,
10:29 "and renewing of the Holy Ghost; which He shed on us abundantly
10:33 through Jesus Christ our Saviour."
10:35 That's Titus 3, verses 5 and 6.
10:39 That's clear, and we're not deviating from that.
10:42 This is why faith in Jesus is so important.
10:45 The only place you can receive
10:47 the righteousness you need to be saved is from Jesus.
10:52 He lived a perfect life.
10:53 And so when you have faith in Jesus,
10:56 you receive credit for His perfect life.
10:59 We're saved through Jesus only.
11:02 In fact, if you look at the Hebrew,
11:04 the Ten Commandments aren't called the ten "commandments,"
11:07 they're called the ten "words,"
11:09 and they're written in the positive.
11:11 Exodus, chapter 20 begins with God saying,
11:13 "I am the Lord your God.
11:14 "[I called] you out of the land of Egypt,
11:16 out of the house of bondage."
11:17 And then He says, you'll "have no other gods before me."
11:20 You won't worship graven images.
11:22 God says, "Because I saved you,
11:25 "this becomes an inevitability in your life.
11:28 This is how you're going to live."
11:30 So, why are the Ten Commandments important?
11:32 Because when somebody comes to faith in Jesus,
11:35 Jesus lives His life in them.
11:39 John 15 and verse 4 says,
11:41 "Abide in me, and I in you.
11:44 "As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself,
11:46 "except it abide in the vine; no more can ye,
11:50 except ye abide in me."
11:52 A lost person comes to Jesus and is saved by faith in Jesus.
11:57 And then, that lost person, now a saved person,
12:00 lives according to the will of God,
12:02 which is expressed in the Ten Commandments.
12:05 [birds twittering]
12:06 Now, I must tell you where I am.
12:09 I'm in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains
12:12 at Fields of the Wood,
12:14 a theme park operated by the Church of God of Prophecy.
12:17 Here you'll find, among other things,
12:19 a 300-feet-wide representation of the Ten Commandments.
12:24 Each letter is five feet high and four feet wide.
12:28 Some of the commandments are abbreviated,
12:30 because if they weren't,
12:32 you'd need a much bigger hillside than this.
12:35 So these are the Ten Commandments,
12:36 larger than life, placed here by Christian believers
12:40 who certainly thought they're important,
12:43 not as a means of salvation,
12:45 but as the life believers in Jesus live
12:47 when He gets hold of their hearts.
12:50 Isn't this something?
12:53 In his book, "The Gift of Rest," former senator Joe Lieberman
12:58 writes about Jews looking forward to and welcoming
13:02 what they call "Queen Sabbath."
13:04 I've witnessed that very thing and heard those same words
13:07 in Jerusalem at the Western Wall.
13:10 In fact, down there you'll see people celebrating
13:12 as the Sabbath arrives,
13:14 celebrating as though they've won the Super Bowl.
13:17 And they believe that's consistent with what you see
13:19 in Isaiah, chapter 58.
13:23 The prophet wrote, "If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath,
13:26 "from doing your pleasure on my holy day,
13:30 "and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy day of the Lord
13:33 "honorable, and shall honor Him, not doing your own ways,
13:38 "nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words,
13:42 "then you shall delight yourself in the Lord;
13:45 "and I will cause you to ride on the high hills of the earth,
13:48 "and feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father.
13:52 The mouth of the Lord has spoken."
13:55 That's a serious blessing proclaimed by God.
13:58 Now, someone's going to say,
13:59 "Ah, but that's for Jews only, surely."
14:02 But wait. We both know that it wasn't long ago
14:05 when Christians used to take the Sabbath seriously.
14:09 Over the years there's been a de-emphasis on this,
14:12 so that today, for most Christians,
14:14 what God gave as a special day has been reduced
14:17 to an hour or two, at most, of going to church.
14:20 I wonder if we could be missing something.
14:22 Author Judith Shulevitz quotes a 17th-century Puritan minister
14:26 who says, "The word Sabbath properly signifies,
14:29 not common, but sacred or holy rest."
14:33 Jesus said that "the Sabbath was made for man"--
14:36 "anthropos," human beings--"and not man for the Sabbath."
14:41 Now, the way many Jews relate to the Sabbath
14:44 might not exactly work for most Christians.
14:47 Setting up a wire around a city that miraculously transforms
14:52 that city into your actual backyard one day a week
14:55 seems a bit like you're taking something given by God
14:58 and wrapping it up in a lot of tradition.
15:01 Judith Shulevitz wrote,
15:03 "I should also add that the image we hold
15:05 "in our heads of the Jewish Sabbath isn't wholly based
15:09 "on the Fourth Commandment, either.
15:12 "The Sabbath of candle lighting and dinners and not driving
15:15 "and not turning lights on and off was shaped
15:18 more by rabbinic law than by the Torah."
15:22 I mentioned Jerusalem.
15:24 If you get on an elevator in a Jewish hotel on the Sabbath,
15:28 you learn that some elevators are preprogrammed
15:31 to stop automatically and open and shut automatically
15:36 on every floor so that a Jewish believer can ride the elevator
15:41 without having to push a button and therefore "work"
15:44 by creating a spark or a fire.
15:47 Jews in Jesus' day had taken this so far as to state
15:50 that Jesus shouldn't even heal a person on the Sabbath day
15:55 because to do so, to heal someone, would be to work.
16:00 The disciples were criticized for taking some grains of wheat
16:03 and rubbing them in their hands so they could eat them,
16:07 minus the wheat husk.

16:15 God gave the Sabbath in the beginning
16:17 as a memorial of Creation,
16:19 which is why He instituted it at the end of the Creation week.
16:23 He created for six days,
16:24 and then He rested on the seventh day.
16:27 He gave it to remind His people just who He was.
16:31 He wanted them to remember Creation,
16:32 which is under relentless attack today.
16:36 He wanted them to trust Him.
16:38 And He also wanted them to rest while entering into His rest.
16:42 But what God gave as a blessing was turned into a curse
16:46 by religious zealots who loaded it down with meaningless,
16:50 rather pointless manmade laws.
16:52 Remember, Jesus Himself and His followers
16:55 fell afoul of the religious leaders
16:57 simply because they plucked some grain on the Sabbath day.
17:01 They were accused of working, which patently they were not.
17:06 But could it be that we're missing something
17:08 by rushing through the day of rest?
17:11 Might we be missing out by forgetting to remember?

23:29 "What's the bare minimum I can give to God
23:31 and still claim to be honoring His wishes here?"
23:33 "Thou shalt not steal"?
23:35 When you get to the place that you're saying,
23:37 "Well, it's not technically stealing,"
23:39 or "I think I can get away with this," that's not a good sign.
23:44 Don't make graven images and bow down yourself to them?
23:47 That doesn't mean that we try to find out which images
23:49 would be okay and which ones are not acceptable.
23:53 "Thou shalt not bear false witness" doesn't mean
23:55 that white lies are okay and only out-and-out deception
23:58 of the worst kind is "verboten."
24:00 When we take the Word of God and try to make it say
24:03 what we want it to say, that doesn't end well.
24:07 David wrote in Psalm 16:11,
24:10 "You will show me the path of life;
24:13 "in Your presence is fullness of joy;
24:16 at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore."
24:20 David got it.
24:22 In God's presence is what? Fullness of joy.
24:29 In 1975 a man who worked on the assembly line
24:32 at the Fiat auto factory in Turin in Italy
24:37 stopped at a police station on his way home one day.
24:40 You see, items found on city trains were sold at auction
24:44 to the highest bidder.
24:46 He looked through the items,
24:47 noticed two paintings that he thought would look nice
24:50 on the wall above his kitchen table.
24:53 The auctioneer told him they were of little value,
24:56 found on a train that ran between Paris and Turin
24:59 in Italy's northwest.
25:01 He outbid another man and paid the equivalent
25:04 of around 70 U.S. dollars.
25:07 Now, he took them home, put them on the wall
25:09 above his kitchen table, and there they sat for years.
25:14 After he retired, his son,
25:17 who was taking an art appreciation class,
25:21 discovered that one of the paintings
25:22 was by the French painter Pierre Bonnard,
25:25 and another was by Paul Gauguin, and they were originals.
25:30 They're worth around $40 million,
25:34 according to some estimates.
25:35 And because insurance had paid out
25:37 and the original owners had no heirs,
25:40 the retired auto worker got to keep his paintings.
25:43 Bought at auction for $70, now worth $40 million, maybe more.
25:51 They were there on his wall all those years
25:55 but unappreciated for what they really were.
25:59 He didn't know the value of what he had.
26:02 It might be that we see these words originally written by God
26:07 and fail to see what we really have.
26:10 When God invites you, "Take some time, spend some time with me,"
26:16 maybe that's an invitation that you don't want to turn down.
26:19 Remember that time with God.
26:22 After all, it was His idea in the first place.
