00:19 >>John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written.
00:20 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me.
00:23 Creationist Ken Ham is the founder and CEO
00:27 of Ark Encounter, which opened in Williamstown, Kentucky,
00:30 in July of 2016.
00:32 We've spoken to Ken Ham here on It Is Written.
00:35 His debate in 2014 with Bill Nye the Science Guy
00:38 on creation and evolution has been watched now
00:40 by millions of people.
00:42 Mr. Ham built an amazing replica of Noah's ark.
00:47 It took his team just two years
00:49 to build what took Noah a whole lot longer.
00:52 You know, power tools will do that.
00:54 He built it according to the measurements found in the Bible.
00:57 It's 85 feet wide, 51 feet high, and 510 feet long,
01:03 1 1/2 times as long as a football field.
01:07 The ark attracts almost a million visitors a year.
01:11 Today, as we continue our series,
01:13 "Great Characters of the Bible,"
01:15 we're going to study the life of Noah.
01:17 Who was Noah?
01:19 And what lessons can we learn from the man
01:21 that was chosen by God to save the population of this world
01:25 from total annihilation?
01:27 It's a thrilling study.
01:28 It not only gives answers to some of the problems
01:30 we face today, but causes us to hope in a merciful God
01:35 who can and will save His children
01:38 during these troublesome times.
01:40 To begin, let's open our Bibles to the "begots" in Genesis.
01:44 Genesis 5:21, we'll find out more about Noah's background:
01:48 "Enoch lived sixty-five years, and begot Methuselah."
01:51 Verse 23: "So all the days of Enoch
01:54 "were three hundred... sixty-five years.
01:56 "And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.
02:01 "Methuselah lived one hundred... eighty-seven years,
02:04 "and begot Lamech.... So all the days of Methuselah
02:07 "were nine hundred...sixty-nine years; and he died.
02:10 "Lamech lived one hundred and eighty-two years, and had a son.
02:14 "And he called his name Noah, saying,
02:17 "'This one shall comfort us
02:19 "'concerning our work and the toil of our hands,
02:22 because of the ground which the Lord [hath] cursed.'"
02:25 That's the lineage of Noah.
02:27 He lived and worked with his grandfather Methuselah.
02:30 Methuselah lived longer than anyone who has ever lived--
02:34 and died--on this earth.
02:36 Methuselah's father was the legendary Enoch,
02:39 who walked with God.
02:41 God just took Enoch without Enoch seeing death.
02:45 There's no doubt Noah grew up hearing the stories of Creation
02:48 and the fall of humanity, and the promises of God.
02:52 Yet he lived during an extremely wicked time.
02:56 The first sin mentioned after describing the lineage of Noah
03:01 was that the followers of God began to intermarry
03:05 with the nonbelievers, and they practiced polygamy.
03:08 Let's read it, starting in Genesis 6, verse 1:
03:11 "Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply
03:14 "on the face on the earth, and daughters were born to them,
03:17 that the sons of God"--or, or the followers of God--
03:21 "saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful;
03:24 "and they took wives for themselves
03:26 of all whom they chose."
03:29 Now, it's been said that the "sons of God" in this verse
03:32 are angels who procreated with humans and created giants.
03:37 Now, the next verse does talk about giants being in the land,
03:39 but that interpretation just doesn't hold up.
03:42 It doesn't agree with Jesus' statement in Matthew 22:30
03:45 that the angels don't marry, nor are they given in marriage.
03:50 Now, immediately after talking about the intermarriage
03:53 between the followers of God and the wives they took
03:57 from among the heathen,
03:58 God said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever."
04:04 That's Genesis 6:3.
04:06 In the New Testament, Jesus said, Matthew 24:37,
04:09 "But as the days of Noah were,
04:11 "so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.
04:14 "For as in the days before the flood,
04:16 "they were eating and drinking,
04:18 "marrying and giving in marriage,
04:21 "until the day that Noah entered the ark,
04:24 "and did not know until the flood came and took them
04:26 all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be."
04:31 It's not that there's any problem at all
04:32 with eating and drinking, or getting married.
04:35 It's the complacency of life going on as usual,
04:38 with no thought of preparing for Jesus to come.
04:42 The, the, the "same old, same old,"
04:44 it's the apathy and indifference toward the message of the Bible.
04:48 The biggest event of the ages is about to happen,
04:52 and just like in the days of Noah,
04:54 people are too occupied, or maybe preoccupied, to notice.
04:59 Part of the blame belongs to the excess of our lifestyle.
05:03 Our plates are too full, even to the detriment of our health.
05:07 Our closets are crammed;
05:09 our houses are getting bigger and more extravagant.
05:13 The world is under the delusion that happiness is achieved
05:15 by what you own or what you can buy.
05:18 We waste our time trying to fill a bottomless bucket,
05:23 just like in the days of Noah.
05:25 The planet has produced a selfie generation
05:28 with a me-first attitude.
05:29 It only leads to unhappy relationships,
05:32 where one out of every two marriages ends in divorce.
05:36 Statistics show that 80 percent of divorcées remarry
05:38 within four years, only to repeat the process.
05:42 That's a lot of heartache and a lot of disappointment.
05:46 When we compare what was going on in Noah's day
05:48 with what's going on now, we can see that we're repeating
05:52 the same sins of the antediluvian world,
05:55 same mistakes.
05:56 Paul described the situation perfectly when he wrote
05:59 in Romans 1:21, "Because that, when they knew God,
06:03 "they glorified Him not as God, neither were thankful;
06:08 "but became vain in their imaginations,
06:10 "and their foolish heart was darkened.
06:12 Professing to be wise, they became fools."
06:16 Noah stood firm against the sin of his age.
06:20 Genesis 6:9 says,
06:22 "Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations.
06:25 Noah walked with God."
06:27 That's what God wanted all along:
06:30 children who would walk with Him,
06:32 children who would love and serve Him.
06:34 But instead, verse 6 laments,
06:37 "And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth
06:41 and He was grieved in His heart."
06:43 In a moment, we'll see how the actions of Noah saved the world
06:47 from total annihilation.
06:48 I'll be right back.

07:31 as we continue our series, "Great Characters of the Bible."
07:35 We're talking about the life of Noah.
07:38 According to the Associated Press,
07:40 authorities were warned at least 10 times
07:44 that a massive stockpile of explosive chemicals
07:47 stored near the port in Beirut, Lebanon,
07:50 was potentially dangerous.
07:52 But no corrective action was taken.
07:55 And on August the 4th, 2020,
07:57 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate blew up,
08:03 causing a massive amount of damage to that beautiful city.
08:08 Approximately 200 were killed and 6,500 injured.
08:14 Now, think of the lives that could have been saved
08:16 and the misery that could have been prevented
08:18 if only someone had heeded the warning.
08:23 Warnings are helpful, if you listen to them and take action.
08:27 In Genesis 6, verse 5, the Bible says that in Noah's day,
08:31 "The Lord saw that the wickedness of man
08:34 "was great in the earth,
08:36 "and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart
08:39 was only evil continually."
08:42 Verse 11 notes that "the earth was filled with violence."
08:47 Violence, it's everywhere--
08:50 senseless murders, physical abuse,
08:53 war, crime everywhere you turn,
08:56 children playing violent video games.
08:59 Doesn't take a multimillion- dollar study to demonstrate
09:03 that we are conditioning our children to be violent.
09:07 And parents cave into pressure to give these games
09:09 to their children because--well, why?
09:12 Because everybody's doing it.
09:14 But what we see as normal God sees as an abomination.
09:19 Things were so bad in Noah's day that God said,
09:21 "'I will destroy man whom I have created
09:24 "'from the face of the earth, both man and beast,
09:27 "'creeping thing and birds of the air,
09:30 "for I am sorry that I have made them.'
09:32 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord."
09:36 Of all the people in the world,
09:38 Noah was the only one who truly had a heart for God.
09:43 No doubt there were people that professed God's name,
09:46 but they didn't live out their faith.
09:49 God is merciful and God is love, but the world was so bad
09:55 that its only chance for survival
09:56 was for God to hit the reset button.
09:59 Most of the people in the world would be destroyed,
10:02 virtually all, but all who wanted to be saved
10:06 could be saved.
10:08 It's written in Amos 3, verse 7,
10:10 "Surely the Lord God does nothing,
10:13 unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets."
10:17 A hundred and twenty years before the Flood,
10:19 the Lord, by a holy angel,
10:21 declared to Noah what was going to happen
10:23 and directed him to build an ark.
10:27 Paul wrote in Hebrews 11, verse 7,
10:29 "By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen,
10:35 "moved with godly fear,
10:37 "prepared an ark for the saving of his household,
10:40 "by which he condemned the world and became heir
10:44 of the righteousness which is according to faith."
10:47 So God warned Noah, and Noah, in turn, warned the people.
10:52 God knew that Noah would act on his faith.
10:56 Now, this is what I want you to remember about Noah:
10:58 He gave the world an example of believing just what God says.
11:03 All of his time was invested in building the ark.
11:07 There was a lot to be done.
11:10 The ark was made out of gopher wood.
11:13 It's the only time you read about gopher wood in the Bible
11:16 in connection with the ark.
11:17 Just cutting and preparing the wood was, in itself,
11:21 a massive undertaking.
11:23 The ark had to be covered on the outside and the inside
11:26 with pitch, so as to make it leakproof.
11:29 There'd be a window in the top to provide light.
11:31 No electricity back then.
11:33 Stalls were needed to keep the animals safe
11:35 while the ark was being tossed about on the water.
11:38 And food was needed to feed them all.
11:40 As the ark began to take shape on dry ground,
11:43 people flocked from every direction to not only see
11:46 the strange sight but to hear the words of Noah.
11:50 They'd never seen rain before.
11:52 According to Genesis 2, verse 6,
11:54 "A mist went up from the earth
11:56 and watered the whole face of the ground."
11:59 And here was a man telling them a flood was coming.
12:03 For centuries the laws of nature had been fixed.
12:07 The rivers had never passed their boundaries.
12:09 There had never been a hurricane,
12:11 never been a tornado.
12:13 You can imagine people saying, "And you're telling us,
12:15 "Mr. Noah, that water is just going to fall out of heaven,
12:19 cover the whole world?"
12:21 They must have thought that Noah was out of his mind.
12:25 But some recognized in his words the voice of God.
12:29 For a time, some believed.
12:32 But as the years passed by,
12:33 they didn't see any evidence that Noah was right.
12:36 Now, we accept what God says not because of evidence;
12:39 we believe by faith.
12:41 We can't prove that God covered the ground with manna.
12:44 We can't prove that God brought water out of a rock.
12:48 But God has given us enough evidence in the Bible
12:51 that we can believe whatever He says.
12:54 For example, the Bible records the history
12:57 of certain world kingdoms long before they existed.
13:01 That ought to give you confidence
13:03 in the veracity of the Bible.
13:05 Remember Hebrews 11, verse 7:
13:07 "By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet,
13:13 moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house."
13:17 "Faith is the substance of things hoped for,
13:20 the evidence of things not seen,"
13:22 according to verse 1 of that same chapter.
13:24 Faith is what set Noah apart from the rest of the world.
13:29 Faith is what saved Noah and his household.
13:32 For 120 years Noah warned the antediluvian world
13:36 of the impending judgment about to break forth.
13:39 The day came when he made his last solemn appeal.
13:42 Again the people laughed at him.
13:45 Then suddenly a stillness settled upon the jeering crowd
13:50 as animals of all kinds and descriptions
13:52 made their way to the ark.
13:54 Fierce tigers, lumbering elephants,
13:57 hopping kangaroos made their way to the open doors.
14:01 Birds came flocking from every direction.
14:04 The animals went two by two into the ark,
14:07 although the Bible says the clean animals went in by sevens.
14:12 Now, some say there's no way all the different species
14:15 could have fit in there.
14:16 But notice what the Bible says in Genesis 7:13 and 14:
14:20 "On the very same day Noah and Noah's sons,
14:22 "Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and Noah's wife and the three wives
14:27 "of his sons with them, entered the ark--
14:29 "they and every beast after its kind,
14:32 "all cattle after their kind, every creeping thing that creeps
14:37 "on the earth after its kind,
14:39 and every bird after its kind, every bird of every sort."
14:42 Now, notice the wording: "after its kind."
14:46 That doesn't mean that there were German shepherds,
14:48 poodles, dachshunds, and every single breed of dog
14:52 going into the ark.
14:53 It means two dogs went into the ark.
14:56 There could have been more,
14:58 but it doesn't mean that every breed went in.
15:01 Same with cats, same with cattle.
15:03 The wording doesn't necessarily mean
15:06 every one of today's species.
15:08 You, you see what I mean.
15:10 After Noah and his family and the animals were safe inside,
15:13 God shut the door.
15:16 For seven days nothing happened.
15:19 You'd imagine the people outside continued on as spectators,
15:21 and you can imagine them laughing and, and joking
15:24 about the crazy old man inside with a zoo.
15:27 By now, Noah was 600 years old.
15:32 But can you imagine how the expressions on their faces
15:35 changed from mirth to fear
15:39 when dark clouds hid the sun on the eighth day.
15:43 They weren't laughing anymore when thunder rumbled
15:46 and lightning cracked and flashed across the sky.
15:50 [thunder rumbles]
15:51 Then rain began to fall,
15:53 slowly at first, you'd think, and then faster and faster.
15:58 It says that "the fountains of the great deep were broken up,
16:01 and the windows of heaven were opened."
16:05 Torrents of water hit the earth with immense force.
16:08 I don't suppose anyone laughed
16:10 as animals began running to higher ground,
16:12 crying out in terror as they went.
16:16 No, instead of laughing, the people would have run to the ark
16:19 and banged on the door.
16:21 But it was too late. Probation had ended for them.
16:26 I can't imagine the terror,
16:28 the horror the people would have felt
16:31 knowing they could have been safely inside the ark.
16:37 So what happened after the door was shut?
16:40 I'll share that with you when we come back.

18:23 We are continuing our series, "Great Characters of the Bible."
18:27 Today we're looking at the life of Noah.
18:30 We can only imagine what it must have been like
18:32 on the outside of the ark as people beheld the destruction
18:36 of their houses and their idols.
18:38 Imagine what it must have felt like inside the ark
18:41 for Noah and his family.
18:43 They could hear the people banging on the door,
18:45 screaming and yelling, begging to be let in.
18:48 They could hear the elements breaking up as trees
18:51 and, and massive rocks were hurled in the air.
18:54 Did Noah want to open the door and let them in?
18:57 Well, you'd think so. But he couldn't.
19:00 God had shut the door, and not even Noah could open it.
19:05 I'm sure the animals inside the ark were scared, too.
19:09 All they or anyone could do was sit tight and hang on
19:12 for the ride of their life.
19:14 For five long months, or 150 days,
19:17 they endured being tossed about by wind and sea.
19:20 They endured smelly animals and being cooped up in the ark.
19:24 Most people get a little stir crazy after a few days
19:27 shut up at home.
19:28 Imagine five months with nowhere to go.
19:31 Oh, now they were traveling, all right,
19:33 but they couldn't see the scenery.
19:35 But at last the waters began to subside, and the ark drifted
19:40 into a spot protected by a group of mountains.
19:44 Noah waited 40 days and sent out a raven.
19:47 The raven flew about but couldn't find a place to land.
19:51 So Noah waited another seven days and sent out a dove.
19:56 Same thing. The dove returned.
19:58 Another seven days passed before Noah sent out another dove,
20:03 which flew back that evening with an olive leaf in her mouth.
20:08 Hope sprang in their hearts.
20:10 Seven days later another dove was released,
20:13 which didn't come back.
20:15 They removed the covering of the ark and smelled fresh air.
20:18 It must have been heavenly.
20:20 I'm sure they were all very curious
20:22 about what the world would have looked like,
20:24 but Noah waited patiently for God to give the directions.
20:27 Eventually God spoke to Noah, saying,
20:29 "Go out of the ark, you and your wife,
20:33 and your sons and your sons' wives with you."
20:37 According to the Bible, the first thing Noah did
20:40 was build an altar and offer sacrifices
20:43 from among the clean animals as a thank offering.
20:47 He wanted to praise God for His kindness and mercy towards him.
20:52 "And the Lord smelled a soothing aroma.
20:55 "Then the Lord said in His heart, 'I will never again
20:59 "'curse the ground for man's sake,
21:02 "'although the imagination of man's heart is evil
21:05 "'from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing
21:09 "'as I have done.
21:10 "'While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest,
21:14 "'cold and heat, winter and summer,
21:17 and day and night shall not cease.'"
21:21 And that's the story of Noah and the ark.
21:24 "God blessed Noah and his [family]" and told them
21:27 to "be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth."
21:32 Then God did a very beautiful thing.
21:37 He made a rainbow and set it in the clouds,
21:41 because He knew that there would always be a question
21:43 in the minds of future generations
21:45 about a worldwide flood.
21:48 If God did it once, wouldn't He do it again?
21:52 But God did not want people to be afraid of rain or storms,
21:55 so He made this promise:
21:57 "I set my rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for [a] sign
22:00 "of the covenant between me and the earth....
22:03 "When I bring a cloud over the earth,
22:05 "that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud;
22:07 "and I will remember my covenant which is between me and you
22:11 "and every living creature of all flesh;
22:14 "the waters shall never again become a flood
22:17 to destroy all flesh."
22:19 Not that God would forget, but His purpose was
22:23 that when future generations would see the ark,
22:26 it would spark their curiosity,
22:28 and their parents would have the opportunity to repeat the story
22:31 of the global flood and God's promise.
22:35 But what became of Noah?
