00:21 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me.
00:24 You might not have heard of Snodgrass Hill.
00:28 It's an unassuming sort of mound.
00:31 Standing at 896 feet,
00:33 there are 885 summits in the state of Tennessee
00:38 higher than Snodgrass Hill.
00:40 But it's a significant landmark for a number of reasons.
00:45 It's located in the Chickamauga National Battlefield,
00:48 nine miles or so from downtown Chattanooga.
00:51 ♪[dramatic music]♪
00:52 The Battle of Gettysburg saw by far the most casualties
00:55 of any Civil War skirmish,
00:57 but second was the Battle of Chickamauga,
01:00 which took place in September of 1863:
01:03 34,500 casualties,
01:06 4,000 dead,
01:08 25,000 injured,
01:10 and more than 6,000 captured or missing.
01:13 There was a lot of death and hurt.
01:16 And Snodgrass Hill saw plenty of it in the northwest
01:20 of what is now the Chickamauga National Military Park.
01:24 One of the most significant things related to Snodgrass Hill
01:28 is not a "what" but a "who."
01:32 Or a "what," or maybe a "who."
01:35 I guess it depends on who you ask.
01:36 There's a story told about a certain soldier.
01:39 No one seems to know his name.
01:41 But in this story, the soldier who fought in the bloody
01:45 Battle of Chickamauga lost his head, literally.
01:50 The story goes that a cannonball took his head off,
01:53 and that ever since, he's been roaming the battlefield at night
01:56 searching for his body.
01:59 The story began circulating shortly after the battle
02:02 was over, but what seems to have given the story credence
02:06 is an account given by a man
02:07 who at one time was the chief ranger of the battlefield.
02:11 He claimed to have encountered "Old Green Eyes,"
02:15 as the ghost is known.
02:17 He said he was walking in the battlefield one morning
02:20 around four o'clock, walking along a road,
02:23 when "an apparition came at me."
02:26 He said it was wearing something like a long trench coat,
02:29 and it turned and looked at him.
02:31 He said the hair on his neck just stood up.
02:35 He told a Chattanooga news channel,
02:37 "I know people don't believe in ghosts,
02:39 but I know what I saw, and it wasn't human."

02:55 The answers to these questions are important
02:57 when it comes to matters of faith.
02:59 The Bible speaks a lot to the subject in a very specific way,
03:04 and many people aren't aware of what the Bible plainly says.
03:10 Ghost stories have been told for...years and years.
03:16 And there are some famous ghosts and some famous ghost stories.
03:21 The ghost of Anne Boleyn,
03:23 the second wife of British king Henry VIII,
03:26 is said to haunt the Tower of London,
03:29 as well as her childhood home, 25 miles southeast of the tower,
03:33 in Kent.
03:34 It's claimed that some have seen the ghost of Benjamin Franklin,
03:37 one of the founding fathers of the United States.
03:40 In fact, it's said that the statue of Franklin in front
03:43 of the American Philosophical Society building in Philadelphia
03:47 comes to life and has been seen dancing in the street.
03:52 A young Robert E. Lee has been seen, apparently,
03:54 at his childhood home in Alexandria, Virginia,
03:57 and has been known to ring the doorbell
04:00 and rearrange objects in the house.
04:02 People say they've heard the 4-year-old Lee
04:04 giggling in the hallways.
04:06 Aaron Burr, the man who shot and killed Alexander Hamilton
04:09 in a duel in 1804, is said to break dishes and move furniture
04:14 at a restaurant in New York City,
04:16 while the spirit of Hamilton haunts the area
04:19 near his burial site in Manhattan.
04:22 Or so they say.
04:23 Similar stories are told about George Washington, Betsy Ross,
04:27 Abraham Lincoln.
04:29 Mary Todd Lincoln, the wife of the 16th president
04:32 of the United States, claimed that she heard
04:35 President Andrew Jackson stomping and swearing
04:38 in the Rose Room in the White House--
04:41 of course, long after he had died.
04:43 Although it's interesting that it's said Mary Todd Lincoln

04:53 It's said that she even believed that Willie,
04:55 the Lincolns' son who died at the age of 11,
04:58 would visit her at night and stand at the end of her bed.
05:04 So what do we make of these stories?
05:06 Does a soldier decapitated in the Civil War
05:10 roam the Chickamauga Battlefield?
05:12 Does Anne Boleyn, who incidentally also lost her head,
05:15 still hang around the Towel of London
05:17 almost 500 years after she was executed?
05:20 We're going to answer some questions:
05:23 Are ghosts real?
05:25 If they are, what are they?
05:28 And what does the Bible say about ghosts?
05:31 What does God say?
05:32 How do we look at this from a biblical perspective?
05:37 There are some famous so-called haunted houses
05:41 all over the world.
05:42 In the United States there's the house in Fall River,
05:45 Massachusetts, in which Lizzie Borden, at the age of 32,
05:49 may or may not have killed her father and stepmother
05:52 with an ax.
05:54 She was acquitted of the murders.
05:56 The home in which the Bordens died is said to be haunted.
06:00 Northwest of Nashville, Tennessee,
06:02 is the Bell Witch Cave.
06:04 While it's not a home, it's on the property
06:07 where John Bell and his family lived in the early 1800s.
06:11 They started seeing strange things
06:13 and hearing strange noises and even spoke with whatever it was
06:16 roaming around the place, a deceased neighbor apparently.
06:20 There's the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina,
06:22 the Winchester House in San Jose, California,
06:26 and a home in Amityville on Long Island, New York,
06:29 in which several people were murdered,
06:32 where the haunting got so bad that the new owners of the home
06:36 moved out only a month after they moved in.

10:45 There's a prominent ghost story in the Bible.
10:49 In 1 Samuel, we find King Saul in a very low place.
10:53 The Bible tells us that the prophet Samuel was dead by now
10:56 and that the Philistines, the enemy of Israel,
11:00 had massed together only a few miles away.
11:03 Saul could see them in the distance.
11:06 First Samuel 28:5 says,
11:08 "When Saul saw the army of the Philistines,
11:11 he was afraid, and his heart trembled greatly."
11:16 So what was his response?
11:17 He was Israel's king.
11:19 We know what he should have done.
11:21 When Jehoshaphat was confronted by the Moabites
11:24 and the Edomites, he prayed that stirring prayer,
11:27 calling out to God and saying,
11:29 "O Lord God of our fathers, are You not God in heaven,
11:33 "and do You not rule over the kingdoms of the nations,
11:37 "and in Your hand is there not power and might,

12:03 That was faith.
12:05 "We have no power against this [enemy]...
12:07 but our eyes are upon You."
12:10 But not Saul.
12:12 It says that "Saul said to his servants,
12:15 "'Find me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her
12:19 "and inquire of her.' And his servants said to him,
12:22 'In fact, there is a woman who is a medium at En Dor.'"
12:26 That's 1 Samuel 28, verse 7.
12:28 He wanted to consult a medium,
12:31 one who communicated with the dead.
12:34 His servants found her living in a cave,
12:37 hiding out from authorities.
12:39 Just a few verses earlier, the Bible says that
12:41 "Saul had put the mediums and... spiritists out of the land."
12:46 God said in Exodus 22 in verse 18:
12:49 "You shall not permit a sorceress to live."
12:53 God had expressly forbidden communicating with the dead,
12:58 and here's why:
13:00 because no one can communicate with the dead,
13:03 for the simple fact that the dead are dead.
13:08 These, these necromancers,
13:10 people who claim to be able to communicate with the dead,
13:12 that's not grandma and grandpa they're communicating with.
13:15 It's the devil.
13:17 It's evil spirits.
13:19 And God doesn't want that happening.
13:22 Now, this woman that you read about in 1 Samuel chapter 28,
13:25 she's commonly referred to as the "witch of En Dor.
13:30 It says in verse 8 that "Saul disguised himself
13:34 "and put on other clothes, and he went, and two men with him;
13:38 "and they came to the woman by night.
13:40 "And he said, 'Please conduct a séance for me,
13:45 and bring up for me the one I shall name to you.'"
13:48 You got that right. This was a séance.
13:52 It was nothing that God would approve of.
13:54 People get confused by this and think that Saul
13:57 was communicating with the actual prophet Samuel.
14:01 Well, he certainly wasn't.
14:03 He said to the witch, "Bring me up Samuel."
14:05 Verse 12 says, "When the woman saw Samuel..."
14:09 Okay, but read on.
14:11 In verse 13, she says,
14:13 "I saw gods ascending out of the earth."
14:16 Or, "I [saw] a god," or, "a divine being [come] up
14:20 out of the earth."
14:22 She didn't say that she saw Samuel.
14:24 And Samuel certainly wasn't a god or a divine being.
14:27 One translation says,
14:29 "I see a ghostly figure coming up out of the earth."
14:33 Saul asks what it looks like, and she says,
14:35 "It's an old man wearing a robe."
14:37 And the Bible says that Saul perceived,
14:39 or Saul figured, that it was Samuel.
14:43 Now, the "Samuel" entity asks,
14:45 "Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?"
14:48 That is, from the realm of the dead.
14:51 Now, notice, Saul didn't see this apparition.
14:54 The woman saw it, and she was a witch.
14:59 This was not someone who brought a message from heaven.
15:02 You might think, "Well, whoever it was,
15:05 "it told Saul that he was going to be killed.
15:07 Surely that's evidence that this was from God."
15:11 Quite the opposite.
15:12 This is evidence that Satan was toying with Saul,
15:16 taunting him, causing him to suffer even more
15:19 than he was already suffering.
15:21 That's how the devil works.
15:23 In fact, if you read in 1 Chronicles, chapter 10,
15:25 it says that Saul died, in part,
15:28 because he went to see the witch.
15:32 You believe that this is the ghost of Samuel

23:17 Now, in the case of Old Green Eyes,
23:19 who I mentioned earlier, many times people have simply
23:22 been confused by the headlights of vehicles.
23:25 Harry Houdini and others have exposed spiritist mediums
23:30 as frauds.
23:31 Some people who see ghosts just see...something.
23:36 Or they think they do.
23:38 Of course, if you want to believe in ghosts
23:40 or the Loch Ness monster or Bigfoot,
23:43 and if you're predisposed to believing that
23:44 based on your upbringing or your culture or whatever,
23:48 nothing's going to stop you.
23:50 Except maybe the Bible--
23:53 that tells us we are living in a spiritual war,
23:56 and that an angry devil is doing all he can to draw people
23:59 away from the Bible as their guide.
24:03 Let your faith rest on the Word of God,
24:06 and you won't be deceived.
24:09 So why do things...happen?
24:12 Well, that's because the devil is at work.
24:14 Can the devil cause people to see weird stuff?
24:17 Yes, he can.
24:18 Can he confuse people?
24:20 Yes again, and he does.
24:22 And he's programming the world right now to believe
24:25 a massive deception, that the dead come back to visit us,
24:30 for the sole purpose that we would be deceived and lost.
24:35 ♪[somber music]♪
24:36 The Bible tells us again and again that death is a sleep.
24:41 "The living...die," and, according to Solomon,
24:44 "know nothing."
24:45 Ecclesiastes 9, verse 5.
24:47 Paul wrote to the Corinthians and said,
24:49 "Behold, I shew you a mystery; we shall not all sleep."
24:54 He wrote to the Thessalonians and said,
24:57 "But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren,
24:59 "concerning those who have fallen asleep,
25:02 lest you sorrow as others who have no hope."
25:05 That's why the Bible says that this king died
25:08 "and slept with his fathers."
25:10 Death is a sleep, and no one sleeping the sleep of death
25:14 is going to go sleepwalking around a battlefield
25:16 or along a street in Philadelphia--or in your attic.
25:20 The dead sleep until the resurrection.
25:23 They don't come back as ghosts.
25:26 I want to encourage you to rest your faith on the Bible.
25:29 Trust the Word of God.
25:32 Lean on Jesus, the One who died for you.
25:35 God wants to grow your understanding of Himself
25:38 and His Word in preparation for eternity.
25:42 And how's that going for you?
25:44 How's your walk with God?
25:46 Are you surrendering your life to Him each day,
25:48 asking Him to lead you and fill you with His presence?
25:52 Are you praying and reading the Bible daily?
25:55 There are evil spirits in this world, and they're active,
25:59 and they often present themselves as harmless fun.
26:03 But deception isn't fun.
26:06 Be guided by the right spirit, the Holy Spirit.
26:09 Center your life on Him today.
26:11 Invite Him into your heart.
26:13 Let Him be your Guide and your strength.
26:15 And watch God grow you and bless your life.
