00:19 >>John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written.
00:21 I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me.
00:24 Now, here's a big question: Is there life out there?
00:29 There's a real fascination with life on other planets,
00:32 extraterrestrial life in other parts of our universe.
00:36 It used to be that we thought there might be life on Mars.
00:39 Pop culture picked up on the subject long ago.
00:42 There have been TV programs.
00:44 There have been pop songs.
00:46 There have been movies made about life out there.
00:50 The United States government has said that it is committed
00:52 to sending a mission to Mars.
00:55 We've sent probes out into our solar system in the hope
00:58 of learning more about what's going on out there,
01:00 in the hope of making important scientific discoveries.
01:04 Telescopes search beyond our sky and find
01:07 the most remarkable images of nebula and supernova
01:12 and distant corners of the Milky Way.
01:15 But so far, no life has been found out there,
01:18 at least nothing in the form of flying saucers
01:22 and little green men.
01:24 There's no shortage of people who claim
01:25 that they've seen UFOs,
01:27 convinced that they have been visited
01:30 by visitors from another planet.
01:33 Strange sightings have been reported.
01:35 Alien encounters have been claimed.
01:38 But it might be,
01:39 it might be people are looking in all the wrong places.
01:43 Now, let me show you what I mean as we continue
01:45 our ongoing series, "Great Chapters of the Bible,"
01:49 and look at Revelation chapter 14.
01:53 If it's messages from outer space you want,
01:55 I've got something for you.
01:58 We start in Revelation chapter 14 and verse 6:
02:03 "And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven,
02:06 having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell
02:10 on the earth,
02:11 and to every nation, and kindred,
02:14 and tongue, and people."
02:16 The Bible is God's frontline communication
02:19 with the human family.
02:21 Peter wrote that "prophecy never came by the will of man,
02:24 but holy men of God spoke as they were moved
02:27 by the Holy Spirit."
02:28 God inspired the writing of the Bible,
02:31 and the Bible brings to us, quite literally,
02:34 messages from outer space.
02:37 How far away is heaven anyway?
02:39 In terms of its literal location,
02:41 it's a long way from here,
02:43 and God communicates with us from beyond the stars,
02:46 from beyond our galaxy, the Milky Way.
02:49 God speaks to us from heaven,
02:51 and in Revelation 14 we see heavenly messengers
02:55 bringing to us messages that originate with God,
02:58 messages for the entire planet,
03:01 messages that are specific in time and in content
03:04 and are designed for the world
03:06 in the last days of earth's history.
03:08 Revelation chapter 14 begins with these words, verse 1:
03:13 "And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion,
03:17 and with Him an hundred forty and four thousand,
03:21 having His Father's name written in their foreheads."
03:25 So, who are the 144,000?
03:27 There's a lot of discussion about this,
03:29 but think about it from this point of view.
03:31 Revelation is a book written using a lot of signs
03:33 and symbols.
03:35 In Revelation 14:1, you've got a Lamb standing on a mountain
03:40 with exactly 144,000 people who all have God's name
03:45 written on their foreheads.
03:47 Might be wisest to look at this from a symbolic point of view.
03:50 Verse 2 talks about the voices that John heard.
03:53 John wrote Revelation, and, by the way,
03:55 this is the same John as who wrote the Gospel of John
03:58 and the three little Johns just before Revelation.
04:01 Verse 3 talks about the song that the 144,000 sing.
04:05 And it tells us that the 144,000 "were redeemed
04:10 from [among] the earth."
04:11 Verse 4 says,
04:13 "These are they which were not defiled with women;
04:16 for they are virgins.
04:18 These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever He goeth.
04:21 These were redeemed from among men,
04:23 being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb."
04:26 And verse 5 says,
04:28 "And in their mouth was found no guile:
04:30 for they are without fault before the throne of God."
04:34 So, who are these people?
04:36 Revelation 7 adds some more information.
04:39 Revelation 7 says that the 144,000 are sealed
04:43 with the seal of God.
04:45 And in earth's last great crisis,
04:47 people will be marked with one or the other of two things.
04:51 The saved will be sealed with the seal of God,
04:53 while the lost are marked with the mark of the beast.
04:57 So the 144,000 are saved and sealed with the seal of God.
05:01 They're obedient to God, God's servants,
05:03 saved and not lost.
05:05 Revelation 7 goes on and says that the 144,000 are chosen
05:09 from the 12 tribes of Israel,
05:12 exactly 12,000 from each of the 12 tribes.
05:15 So, if you want to, you could believe that the 144,000
05:19 have to be 144,000 celibate Jews.
05:23 Or you could choose to look at this as a picture
05:26 of God's saved people of any and all races down here
05:30 in the close of time.
05:32 What do we know about this group?
05:33 We know that they're saved.
05:35 We know they don't receive the mark of the beast.
05:37 We know they do receive the seal of God,
05:39 because Revelation 14 describes the saved as keeping
05:43 "the commandments of God."
05:45 They are saved; we know they're obedient to God.
05:48 They follow the Lamb; they follow Jesus.
05:52 They are completely given to Him.
05:54 And that's the explanation for the Lamb.
05:56 They're not following a woolly lamb around a mountain.
05:58 The 144,000 appear to be the saved who survive
06:02 earth's final crisis and are victorious over the beast
06:05 and his image, saved when Jesus returns to the earth.
06:10 Keep in mind that Revelation 14 starts with the words,
06:13 "And I looked," indicating it follows on from Revelation 13,
06:18 which says, starting in verse 15,
06:21 "And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast,
06:25 that the image of the beast should both speak,
06:27 and cause that as many as would not worship
06:30 the image of the beast should be killed.
06:33 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor,
06:36 free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand,
06:39 or in their foreheads:
06:41 and that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark,
06:46 or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
06:49 Here is wisdom.
06:51 Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast:
06:55 for it is the number of a man;
06:58 and his number is six hundred threescore and six."
07:03 ♪[soft music]♪
07:05 Revelation 13 is a picture
07:07 of earth's great final spiritual crisis,
07:11 a time of persecution and trouble for the people of God
07:14 as evil finally has its way in the world,
07:17 as sin and rebellion against God come to a head.
07:20 Revelation 14 opens with a picture of those
07:23 who are faithful to God, who are victorious,
07:26 who sing a song of victory, just as Moses and his people did
07:29 after Pharaoh was defeated and they were delivered.
07:32 The beginning of Revelation chapter 14
07:34 is where God sees you, triumphant, victorious, saved,
07:39 a conqueror, through faith in Jesus Christ.
07:43 Imagine what it would take to be part of the group of people
07:46 who are saved in earth's last days.
07:48 Well, I'll tell you:
07:49 It'll take the presence of Jesus in your life,
07:52 a heart that is given over to God,
07:54 a life that is lived for God's glory and not your own.
08:00 Think of that with me for a moment:
08:01 Living for your own glory--
08:04 how futile is that?
08:06 While there's nothing wrong with having the blessings
08:07 of this world, if that's what you're living for,
08:11 it'll be a curse to you and not a blessing to you.
08:14 Imagine having the best of this world,
08:16 but not having Jesus,
08:18 or living for yourself without reference to God.
08:22 You can please yourself for a while,
08:24 but when it really matters, you'll have nothing.
08:28 But God offers you everything.
08:30 And you can have the best that God has to offer,
08:33 if you'll open up your heart to God
08:34 and receive Jesus as your Savior,
08:37 if you'll receive the new heart God wants you to have.
08:40 Not because you deserve it,
08:42 but because God wants you to have it,
08:44 and you can accept it.
08:46 Can you do that?
08:48 I think you can.
08:49 In a moment, the message that produces God's saved people
08:54 in earth's last days.
08:56 I'll be right back.

09:37 >>John Bradshaw: Thanks for joining me on It Is Written.
09:39 We're looking at another great chapter of the Bible,
09:42 this time Revelation 14.
09:44 Revelation is considered a last-days book of the Bible
09:47 because it speaks to many of the issues and the events
09:50 of earth's final days.
09:51 And keep this in mind about the book of Revelation:
09:54 John wrote it using a lot of signs and symbols.
09:58 He wanted his readers to understand what he was writing,
10:01 so he chose his symbols carefully.
10:04 If you have a, a code, let's call it, you need to have a key,
10:08 a way for the people who are reading the code
10:10 to decipher that code and get the message
10:13 you actually want them to get.
10:15 In World War II, Germany used something called
10:18 an Enigma machine to encrypt messages.
10:21 It was effective.
10:23 Cracking the Enigma code became essential to the Allies.
10:26 In the 1930s, work was done by Polish intelligence
10:30 to understand the mystery of Enigma.
10:32 During World War II, a British group
10:35 that included mathematician Alan Turing
10:37 finally cracked Enigma, which many say shortened the war
10:41 by as much as four years
10:43 and saved potentially millions of lives.
10:46 It's important to be able to figure out the code.
10:49 John wrote Revelation using a sort of code,
10:52 using signs and symbols.
10:54 No, it's not that the entire book is written like that,
10:57 but a lot of it is.
10:58 Now, how do we crack the code?
11:01 Well, the code used by John is really pretty simple.
11:06 John used the Old Testament to source his signs and symbols,
11:10 and we see that in Revelation 14.
11:13 We're going to see that very soon.
11:14 But let's pick up in Revelation 14 in verse 6:
11:17 "And I saw another angel [flying] in the midst of heaven,
11:20 having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell
11:24 on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred,
11:27 and tongue, and people."
11:29 An angel. Why is that?
11:31 The Greek word is "angelos," a "messenger."
11:34 This is a messenger sent by God. Again, it's symbolic.
11:37 There won't be an actual angel flying up in the sky
11:40 calling to people below on the earth.
11:42 This represents a message going to the ends of the world,
11:46 a message for everyone to hear.
11:48 This is God's last-day message,
11:50 the gospel message the world must hear, will hear
11:54 before everything is done here on Planet Earth.
11:57 So, see how important this is?
11:59 A messenger, up where you can't miss the messenger,
12:02 taking the message to everyone everywhere.
12:05 Verse 7:
12:06 "Saying with a loud voice, 'Fear God, and give glory to Him;
12:10 for the hour of His judgment is come:
12:13 and worship Him that made heaven, and earth,
12:15 and the sea, and the fountains of waters.'"
12:19 First thing you notice: The angel speaks with a loud voice.
12:21 In the Greek, a "mega" "phoné," a megaphone, "a loud voice."
12:27 So this indicates the message must be heard.
12:30 It is important.
12:33 I grew up near a railroad track, a busy one.
12:36 And as kids, we used to play on the tracks,
12:38 you know, as kids do.
12:41 Across from where we lived, the track was long and straight,
12:44 and, of course, you could hear the train coming from about
12:46 a mile away, because it would sound its warning device
12:48 before it crossed the bridge over the river.
12:51 You could hear it rumbling over that bridge.
12:53 But one day my brother, knowing a train was coming,
12:56 saw me on the track and noticed I wasn't moving to safety.
13:01 The train was still a good way off,
13:02 but my brother could see me here and the train down there.
13:06 And he was concerned.
13:08 So what did he do?
13:09 He spoke to me in a loud voice.
13:12 Okay, he shouted to me,
13:13 "John, get off the track! John, there's a train coming!"
13:17 Of course, I couldn't hear him; there was a train coming.
13:21 Well, I got off the tracks in plenty of time,
13:23 although the train driver might disagree with that.
13:26 Found out later from my mother that my brother had been
13:28 concerned enough about me to raise his voice.
13:32 The angel calls with a, with a raised voice, with a loud voice.
13:35 No, no, not shouting, but calling to us,
13:39 because this is important.
13:41 God wants us to be saved.
13:44 "Fear God, and give glory to Him."
13:47 No, no, not terror.
13:49 But we're to live in relation to God with respect,
13:52 with, with awe, with reverence,
13:54 maybe even a little old-fashioned fear
13:56 when you consider the sinfulness of sin
13:58 and the ultimate fate of the wicked.
14:01 But this is a call to love God,
14:03 to surrender to God, to give God glory.
14:06 There's a question we want to ask ourselves from time to time,
14:10 maybe even often:
14:11 Does my life glorify God?
14:15 Is what I'm doing going to bring glory to God?
14:18 How will this decision glorify the God of heaven?
14:22 You don't want to live for yourself,
14:24 but for the glory of the God whose Son Jesus died for you.
14:29 And God ramps it up when He says we are to fear Him
14:32 and give Him glory because "the hour of His judgment is come."
14:36 Later in Revelation, you read this really interesting verse,
14:39 chapter 22 and verse 11:
14:43 "He that is unjust, let him be unjust still:
14:47 and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still:
14:49 and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still:
14:52 and he that is holy, let him be holy still."
14:55 And then Jesus says,
14:57 "And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me,
15:01 to give every man according as his work shall be."
15:04 Yes, God is going to judge the world.
15:07 Knowing there's a judgment going on in heaven
15:09 ought to sober us up a little.
15:12 We shouldn't go on without reference to God.
15:14 We really don't want to play fast and loose with sin,
15:17 to be casual about faith in God.
15:20 King Belshazzar in Babylon was told that he was
15:22 "weighed in the balances, and found wanting."
15:27 How would you be found?
15:29 And then God says to us in Revelation 14, verse 7:
15:32 "And worship Him that made heaven, and earth,
15:35 and the sea, and the fountains of waters."
15:38 That's a call to worship the Creator.
15:41 In Revelation 13, people are called,
15:43 in fact, forced, to worship the creature.
15:47 In an age of relativism and skepticism and atheism,
15:52 the final call to the world is to worship God as the Creator.
15:57 And the active agent at Creation was, of course, Jesus.
16:01 John chapter 1, written by the same person as wrote Revelation,
16:04 starts like this:
16:05 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,
16:08 and the Word was God.
16:10 The same was in the beginning with God.
16:13 All things were made by Him;
16:15 and without Him was not any thing made that was made."
16:19 So the everlasting gospel in Revelation 14 includes
16:22 a very direct call to recognize Jesus as Creator,
16:26 and, therefore, to recognize creation as God's work
16:29 in the world and in our lives.
16:32 Well, then John writes about Babylon
16:36 and the mark of the beast.
16:39 So what's that all about?
16:41 I'll have that and more in just a moment.

18:24 >>John Bradshaw: Thanks for joining me on It Is Written.
18:26 We're continuing our series, "Great Chapters of the Bible,"
18:30 looking this time at Revelation 14.
18:34 It includes what John refers to as "the everlasting gospel,"
18:38 the final gospel message to go to the world.
18:41 And in verse 8, we see the message of the second angel:
18:46 "And there followed another angel, saying,
18:48 'Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city,
18:52 because she made all nations drink
18:54 of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.'"
18:57 Geographically speaking, Babylon was located in Iraq,
19:00 60 or 70 miles in a straight line from Iraq's modern capital,
19:05 Baghdad.
19:06 The Babylonian Empire fell that night more than 2,000 years ago
19:10 when the writing was on the wall for its king.
19:13 who happened to be the grandson
19:14 of the mighty King Nebuchadnezzar.
19:16 God stated that the city would never be inhabited again.
19:20 So why is John saying, after the fact, that Babylon is fallen?
19:25 Now, remember how he wrote Revelation,
19:28 using the Old Testament as the key to unlock the code
19:32 he employed in Revelation.
19:35 What was Babylon in the Old Testament?
19:37 Babylon was a center of false worship,
19:40 of opposition to God and to the gospel.
19:44 The prophet Isaiah describes Satan as being
19:46 the invisible king of Babylon in Isaiah chapter 14.
19:51 So Babylon was symbolic of the dark side and the great battle
19:54 between light and dark, between good and evil,
19:57 between Christ and Satan.
19:59 In fact, Peter referred to Rome in 1 Peter 5 as Babylon,
20:04 the great power that worked against the church.
20:08 Late in earth's history, God again refers to the systems,
20:12 especially the religious systems,
20:14 working against the truth of the Bible, as Babylon,
20:17 and He says that Babylon is fallen.
20:19 She made all nations confused,
20:22 drunk with her false teachings and her sinful influence.
20:26 Later in Revelation, in chapter 18, God says,
20:29 "Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins,
20:32 and lest you receive of her plagues."
20:34 God evidently will have people
20:37 in the last days of earth's history
20:38 who love Him and desire to follow Him,
20:41 but they're caught up in spiritual confusion.
20:45 The Towel of Babel in the book of Genesis,
20:47 that's where God confused the languages of the people
20:50 of the world.
20:51 That word "Babel" means "confusion,"
20:54 and Babylon represents spiritual confusion.
20:57 We want to be sure we're following the truth
20:59 of God's Word.
21:00 It's important.
21:02 Confusion, falsehood, false teaching--
21:05 they're deadly, and they lead you away from faith in Christ.
21:09 Then the third angel comes with this message,
21:12 starting in verse 9:
21:14 "If any man worship the beast and his image,
21:16 and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,
21:19 the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God,
21:24 which is poured out without mixture
21:26 into the cup of His indignation."
21:28 And so on.
21:30 It's a serious message.
21:32 Again, what is John getting at?
21:35 Revelation builds especially on top of the book of Daniel.
21:39 A lot of the prophetic symbols John uses
21:42 he borrows right from Daniel.
21:44 And if we follow that line of thinking,
21:46 we can understand what a beast is.
21:49 This is how Daniel described it.
21:51 He had a vision in which he saw "four great beasts [come] up
21:55 from the sea, diverse one from another."
21:58 That's Daniel 7, verse 3.
22:00 He described them as being like a lion, then a bear,
22:03 then a leopard, and then something he had difficulty
22:06 explaining, and God explains to him what he saw.
22:09 Daniel 7:17,
22:11 "These great beasts, which are four,
22:14 are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth."
22:17 Verse 23:
22:18 "The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth."
22:24 So when John wrote about a beast,
22:26 if we're being consistent with how we interpret prophecy,
22:29 we'll see this beast as being a kingdom,
22:33 clearly a kingdom with great power and influence
22:36 throughout the world.
22:37 Many people today would say that that beast is an individual.
22:41 Several hundred years ago,
22:42 the leaders of the Protestant Reformation
22:44 saw it as the medieval church,
22:47 the church of Rome, which was so powerful and influential
22:50 and which persecuted God's people ruthlessly
22:54 and mercilessly.
22:56 John goes on to warn us against receiving the mark of the beast
23:00 in our hand or forehead.
23:02 Now, think about this.
23:03 Your forehead represents your mind.
23:05 Right behind your forehead is the frontal lobe of your brain,
23:08 where you make decisions.
23:11 And there'll be people who have made up their mind;
23:13 they have decided they're going to worship the beast.
23:16 They will go against God's Word.
23:19 There will be others who don't believe
23:21 that they should do that, but they do it anyway.
23:23 By their actions they support false worship and rebellion
23:26 against God.
23:28 They'll receive the mark of the beast in their hand.
23:30 I'd like you to know more about this.
23:32 There's a lot more detail about this in my book,
23:35 "Revelation Today."
23:36 I'd like you to get it.
23:37 It's today's free offer.
23:39 It will speak to you about the beast and the mark of the beast
23:42 in the forehead and the hand, the identity of the beast.
23:45 Be sure that you get this free offer,
23:48 "Revelation Today."
23:50 I want you to see the solution
23:51 to all of these problems in Revelation chapter 14,
23:55 the great crisis of earth's last days.
23:58 Revelation 14:12 says,
24:00 "Here is the patience of the saints:
24:03 here are they that keep the commandments of God,
24:05 and the faith of Jesus."
24:08 When you purpose in your heart to surrender to God
24:11 and obey Him, when you choose to yield your life to Him
24:15 and to allow His Spirit to lead you in paths of faithfulness,
24:19 you don't receive the mark of the beast.
24:21 You'd instead be sealed with the seal of God.
24:25 God is looking for people who will be more than
24:27 cultural Christians, who'll do more than simply name
24:31 the name of Jesus,
24:33 who will actually surrender their lives to God
24:37 and allow His will to be done,
24:38 regardless of the cost or the consequences.
24:42 Are you facing that sort of decision right now?
24:44 Should I be faithful?
24:46 Or should I compromise?
24:48 Should I surrender my whole life to Jesus?
24:50 For some people, the stakes are high,
24:52 because you're concerned about your spouse, your family,
24:55 your employer, your friends, your family history.
24:59 But you can know that God is faithful.
25:02 A decision for God is always the right decision.
25:06 Revelation 14 concludes with a picture of a harvest:
25:10 The saved are reaped; the lost, they're lost.
25:15 And you can decide right now
25:17 where you want to be in that picture:
25:20 saved with Jesus, or...
25:23 come on, there's really no option, really, is there?
25:26 Jesus died for you. Jesus is coming back for you.
25:29 Heaven awaits you.
25:31 You choose Jesus, remembering that God has chosen you,
25:36 and eternity is yours.
