00:20 >>John Bradshaw: Thanks for joining me today.
00:21 This is It Is Written.
00:22 I'm John Bradshaw.
00:23 When you open up the Bible,
00:25 particularly the early chapters of the Bible,
00:28 you discover that, way back then,
00:30 some individuals lived a very long time.
00:33 Methuselah, we know, lived to be 969.
00:37 Yet in today's society, when somebody gets to 80, 85, 90,
00:42 we get excited and think they've lived a long time.
00:44 A hundred, more common today than it was a generation ago,
00:48 is an outstanding achievement.
00:50 But compare that to the Bible,
00:52 and it's, not really so long at all.
00:54 Today we're going to talk about anti-aging secrets.
00:57 How you can live longer, healthier, happier,
01:01 and holier from a biblical perspective.
01:04 My guest today is Dr. John Westerdahl.
01:06 He is a nutritionist from the Bragg Health Institute
01:09 in Santa Barbara, California.
01:11 Dr. Westerdahl, thanks for joining me.
01:13 Welcome to It Is Written.
01:14 >>Dr. John Westerdahl: Thank you, John.
01:15 It's good to be with you today.
01:16 >>John: Now, I'm fascinated to know that you are a
01:17 board-certified anti-aging health practitioner.
01:20 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes.
01:21 >>John: What's that?
01:22 >>Dr. Westerdahl: There's a organization called the American
01:24 Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine.
01:26 And there's thousands of doctors
01:28 who are members of this organization,
01:30 and their specialty is into learning how we can
01:33 promote anti-aging, live longer and healthier lives.
01:37 And, uh, so what they have is they have certifications
01:40 for both medical doctors, board certifications,
01:43 as well as healthcare practitioners.
01:45 I'm a nutritionist, so I've taken the exams
01:47 and become board certified in that area as well.
01:49 Because that's a big interest of mine.
01:51 >>John: Anti-aging.
01:52 You can't stop a person getting old.
01:53 The only way to not get old is to die.
01:55 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yeah.
01:55 >>John: The longer you live,
01:56 the further back in time your birthday gets.
01:59 But I'm expecting that this idea of anti-aging is,
02:02 is warding off the ravages of Father Time.
02:04 Is that right?
02:05 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes, it is.
02:06 And, uh, it's not that we're against aging.
02:07 >>John: Oh, no.
02:08 >>Dr. Westerdahl: We're going to age.
02:09 We're going to get a year older every year.
02:11 But there's things that we can do to slow
02:12 the aging process down and, in some cases,
02:16 even reverse some of that process,
02:18 by a healthy lifestyle and some of the new technologies
02:21 in the anti-aging field.
02:22 >>John: I've heard of this thing,
02:23 you look at your birth certificate;
02:24 it says you're 20, 30, 40, 50, 60.
02:26 But then you can do these little tests and it will tell you your,
02:29 your health age,
02:30 and you might be older than your birth certificate says,
02:33 or doing better.
02:35 Your body's younger than that piece of paper might suggest.
02:37 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes.
02:39 That's the different between chronological age
02:41 versus biological age.
02:43 Chronologically, we get a year, every year we get older.
02:46 But if you are living a healthy lifestyle,
02:49 you're taking good care of your health,
02:50 you don't have the health problems and so forth
02:52 that a lot of average Americans do, you, uh,
02:55 can be potentially younger than your chronological age,
02:59 just by the way you live.
03:00 >>John: Now, if you look at the average age for an individual
03:02 in a Western society, it's not that bad.
03:05 And the average lifespan that is,
03:08 is a whole lot longer than it was,
03:10 say, a generation or a hundred years ago.
03:13 Now, much of that is due to improvements in healthcare;
03:18 uh, infant mortality rates are down.
03:20 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes.
03:21 >>John: So those figures don't really give a very accurate
03:26 picture of how much better we're doing today
03:28 than we were some years ago.
03:29 Perhaps the numbers overstate the fact.
03:32 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes.
03:33 >>John: So, where are we today with healthcare?
03:34 How well are we doing as a society?
03:36 >>Dr. Westerdahl: We're doing very poorly,
03:37 and I think a lot of people see that today.
03:39 Uh, the problem is that, from healthcare standpoint,
03:43 is there's so much emphasis put on cheaper health insurance,
03:47 or cheaper drugs, uh, less expensive,
03:50 uh, treatments that we can have, and so forth.
03:53 Some of those, uh, technologies are miraculous.
03:56 It's amazing what we are doing today
03:58 in the science of medicine.
04:00 However, we're not getting to the root cause
04:02 of the healthcare crisis problem,
04:04 and that has to do with the way we are living, our lifestyle.
04:08 Because for 90 percent of the cases,
04:11 it's our lifestyle that's causing the health problems that
04:14 we have today.
04:15 >>John: A few changes in the way we're living
04:17 our lives would affect our outcomes dramatically.
04:19 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes.
04:20 And that's why,
04:21 in addition to the field of anti-aging medicine,
04:23 this whole area of lifestyle medicine
04:25 is also emerging for doctors who see,
04:28 they're beginning to see the light that we can't spend
04:31 all this money in healthcare that we are today,
04:33 and all these exotic treatments in medicines and technologies,
04:36 that we need to do things that can be less expensive,
04:41 and that's like simple things: eating healthier,
04:44 getting regular exercise, learning to control your stress.
04:47 Lifestyle things.
04:48 >>John: So tell me, then, I go to the doctor,
04:50 I'm a diabetic, I have, um, some kind of, uh, cardiac issue.
04:54 I might have rheumatoid arthritis.
04:57 One thing I could do is say,
04:58 write me some prescriptions, Doctor.
05:00 And the doctors in many, or most,
05:01 cases will do just that.
05:02 But a lifestyle medicine physician might do what?
05:07 >>Dr. Westerdahl: A lifestyle medicine doctor would sit down
05:09 with you and take a look at your diet,
05:10 and say, well, what kind of foods do you eat?
05:13 Of course, they would do some tests,
05:14 blood tests, and do the weight, height and weight,
05:16 all those tests, to get an assessment.
05:19 But they will look at your diet, they'll look at your exercise
05:21 and activity habits,
05:23 all the things related to your lifestyle,
05:25 really, and see where those may be the causes
05:28 of the health condition you may have.
05:29 And, as I said, in the majority of health problems today
05:34 are diet and lifestyle related.
05:36 In fact, 70 percent of the patients that we have
05:39 in our hospitals today are there as a result of diet
05:41 and lifestyle-related causes.
05:43 >>John: The old saying is, "you are what you eat."
05:45 So what are some good foods that can,
05:48 uh, help, uh, perhaps, uh, ward off sickness,
05:53 or reverse diseases, or, or are anti-aging?
05:58 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, there's one message that I want to get
05:59 clear to you, and to our listeners today,
06:02 is that foods from plants prevent the diseases
06:06 that are killing us.
06:07 Foods from plants promote health,
06:11 longevity, and beauty.
06:13 >>John: So, what are some foods?
06:15 List some quickly, and say, well,
06:16 these ones are really good for you.
06:17 >>Dr. Westerdahl: The, uh, research is showing now,
06:19 eating more fruits and vegetables,
06:22 particularly colorful fruits and vegetables,
06:24 can significantly reduce your risk of having stroke and,
06:28 and, uh, heart disease, and cancer.
06:30 There are wonderful compounds that we find in these fruits
06:34 and vegetables that God has put into nature for us to eat,
06:38 besides just the nutrients, the vitamins and minerals,
06:40 but the, we call them phytochemicals,
06:43 which are, include antioxidants.
06:45 Uh, these are compounds that actually prevent or slow
06:49 the process of aging.
06:50 They prevent our cells from rusting, you could say.
06:53 And, uh, they actually block some of the carcinogens
06:58 doing their damage to these cells as well.
07:01 >>John: I'm excited about that.
07:02 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes.
07:03 >>John: What are the good antioxidant foods?
07:04 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Colorful fruits and vegetables
07:06 are the best ones.
07:07 >>John: Carrots.
07:08 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Carrots.
07:08 Those have bright yellow colors.
07:10 That's beta-carotene, the carotinoids.
07:13 Your green has carotinoids, including lutein.
07:16 Your purple colors have these proanthocyanins,
07:20 they call them.
07:21 >>John: I've heard that blueberries
07:21 are good antioxidants.
07:23 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Blueberries are an excellent antioxidant.
07:24 And that's why I recommend eating a rainbow of colors,
07:27 because you're going to get a variety of these wonderful
07:30 compounds that you find in foods,
07:31 when you do that.
07:32 >>John: Today, anti-aging foods from the Bible.
07:35 Before we're done, we'll even share with you a recipe,
07:39 and we'll show you some food, and maybe even sample some food,
07:42 that has definite anti-aging qualities and properties.
07:46 Anti-aging: living longer, living healthier, living holier,

09:00 I'm John Bradshaw.
09:00 Thank you for joining me today.
09:02 Being joined today by Dr. John Westerdahl,
09:04 a nutritionist and a board-certified
09:07 anti-aging health practitioner.
09:09 Today, how you can live longer,
09:11 how you can even turn back the clock.
09:14 That's true, isn't it, turning back the clock?
09:16 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes it is.
09:17 Uh, through things that you can do in your own lifestyle
09:19 and the food you eat,
09:20 your exercise, your lifestyle habits,
09:22 you can actually slow the aging process and,
09:25 in some cases, you can actually reverse it.
09:27 >>John: Is anti-aging only for older people?
09:30 Are you supposed to start this
09:31 when you're 70, 80, 85 years old?
09:33 >>Dr. Westerdahl: It's interesting you talk about that,
09:34 because, um, my daughter, when she was six years old,
09:37 I'd tell people,
09:38 “She's on an anti-aging diet.”
09:39 >>John: And I bet they said, well, looking at her,
09:41 it seems to be working.
09:42 >>Dr. Westerdahl: [chuckles] Well, I have to tell you that
09:44 this is an important thing,
09:45 because it's really sad to see
09:47 what's happening with our youth today.
09:49 Actually, we need to get people on anti-aging lifestyles
09:54 when they're young.
09:55 That's when we should start.
09:56 Uh, you know, today we have seven-year-old children
10:00 with adult-onset diabetes.
10:01 We have young kids who have adult, uh, diseases.
10:05 I was talking to a nurse the other day.
10:07 Her 13-year-old son,
10:08 said she didn't know what to do because her son,
10:11 the doctor said his arteries are all clogged up.
10:14 >>John: How old?
10:15 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Only 13 years of age.
10:17 And I was in the room when the surgeon general said that,
10:21 based on the way things are going today with obesity and the
10:24 health problems that we're facing with our children today,
10:27 that it is in this generation,
10:29 that parents will outlive their own children.
10:32 >>John: Yeah, that's shocking.
10:33 I've heard in the last few years some talk about blue zones.
10:37 These are places around the world,
10:39 various communities or locations,
10:41 where people seem to live much longer
10:44 than populations outside these zones.
10:47 Can you tell me about those?
10:48 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes, that's actually a term
10:49 that was developed by Dan Buettner,
10:51 who is with National Geographic Magazine,
10:53 where a few years ago they had a special
10:56 on the secrets of living longer.
10:58 And they identified these blue zones.
11:01 These blue zones are areas in the world where people
11:04 or populations have exceptional health and longevity.
11:08 In that issue of National Geographic,
11:10 they identified three different cultures.
11:12 One is in Okinawa, Japan,
11:15 where there's a high level of centenarians in that area
11:19 who follow the traditional Okinawa lifestyle
11:22 and diet and so forth.
11:23 The second area was in Sardinia, Italy.
11:26 And the third, the blue zone of America,
11:29 was in Loma Linda, California,
11:32 which is the high population of Seventh-day Adventists.
11:34 >>John: And yet, they're living long lives in spite of the fact
11:37 that they're not living in a bucolic little paradise.
11:40 So let's talk about these places.
11:41 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Okay.
11:42 >>John: Sardinia, Okinawa, Loma Linda:
11:44 what are the factors that contribute to this longevity?
11:46 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, when they look at those different
11:48 populations, they find some similar patterns.
11:51 First of all, a lot of them eat a lot of fruits and vegetables.
11:54 They eat a, predominantly a plant-based diet.
11:57 So they're getting a lot of those antioxidants
11:58 and health properties we talked about earlier.
12:01 Uh, they have a, uh, culture where there's a lot of
12:04 socialization with each other.
12:06 They have, uh, their friends; in the Seventh-day Adventist
12:10 population they worship together;
12:12 the community has a similar philosophy of, of life.
12:15 In, um, Okinawa it's the same way.
12:18 These populations are also, uh,
12:20 tend to be more active than other parts,
12:22 their counterparts in their areas where they live.
12:25 And, um, so there's a number of factors that contribute
12:28 to their health and longevity.
12:30 >>John: Hmm. Now, you mentioned the Hunza people.
12:33 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes.
12:35 >>John: It Is Written, when George Vandeman was the director
12:37 and the speaker of It Is Written some years ago,
12:39 It Is Written traveled to that part of the world
12:42 and met with the Hunza people, and explored some of the,
12:47 the health secrets of these people that live long.
12:50 What can you tell us about the, the Hunzas?
12:52 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, the Hunzas are up in the Himalayan
12:54 Mountains, very high, used to be northern Pakistan;
12:57 now it is part of Pakistan.
13:00 And, uh, they have a very unique lifestyle in that they live
13:03 a totally natural way of living.
13:06 They eat all organic food.
13:08 They eat predominantly a plant-based diet;
13:10 actually, only 13 days of the year do they eat some meat.
13:13 The rest of the time they follow a vegetarian diet.
13:16 Um, they're amongst the longest living people in the world.
13:20 Uh, reports of ages up to 120 to 130 years of age,
13:24 uh, that have been reported in the Journal
13:27 of the American Medical Association.
13:28 And I know when Pastor Vandeman went over there,
13:31 he had a picture of an individual that was 120 years
13:34 old and was really in good health.
13:36 They have a, uh, a lifestyle that is similar to these other
13:40 blue zones in that it contributes to a population
13:44 that has a lot of centenarians in their population.
13:46 >>John: Now, how do we define aging?
13:49 What are some of the different theories about aging?
13:52 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, there's a lot of ways of defining it.
13:54 People think of wrinkles.
13:55 You're losing your hair.
13:57 The typical things we think of aging.
14:00 >>John: I guess I'm aging.
14:01 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And, and we all are aging
14:02 to some degree, right?
14:04 >>John: Um-hmm. Anti-aging, building healthy cells,
14:07 and something that you can eat and enjoy.
14:11 Don't go away.

14:40 my brothers how glad Dad was that this brother
14:43 had got a job in a certain place, because, as Dad saw it,
14:45 if my brother applied himself he'd get noticed
14:48 and he'd be able to rise up through the ranks.
14:51 The Bible presents a similar thought,
14:53 although it has an important difference involved.
14:55 In Genesis, chapter 41, verses 39 and 40,
14:58 Pharaoh gave Joseph great authority in Egypt because,
15:02 as Pharaoh said,
15:03 “There is no one as discerning and wise as you.”
15:07 And where did that wisdom and discernment come from?
15:10 From Joseph's connection with and commitment to God.
15:14 Faith in God elevates a person.
15:16 When you become what you can become through the grace of God,
15:19 doors open and opportunities present themselves.
15:22 God has great plans for a person's life.
15:24 The key to success lies in committing your life to God.
15:27 Let's live today by every word.
15:32 >>John: Thanks for joining me today on It Is Written.
15:35 Today, anti-aging secrets from the Word of God.
15:39 And when we stop to think about this,
15:40 we realize that, back near the beginning,
15:43 it was through eating that which she shouldn't have eaten
15:46 that Eve lost her life and plunged, along with Adam,
15:50 the world into sin and shortness of life.
15:54 We're told in the Bible that we should eat for strength.
15:57 Dr. John Westerdahl, what do we have here?
16:00 I said a moment ago that we were going to share something
16:02 that would be an anti-aging secret, so please explain.
16:05 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, we're going to make an anti-aging
16:06 smoothy for you today that's going to add years to your life
16:09 and life to your years.
16:10 >>John: All right.
16:12 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And it's going to be based on building
16:13 healthy cells, so you have a good cell wall,
16:15 and keep that moisture within the cell,
16:17 so that keeps us younger.
16:18 >>John: If I need more intracellular water,
16:20 shouldn't I just drink more water?
16:22 >>Dr. Westerdahl: You know, that's kind of a, a fallacy.
16:24 Because if you're drinking all this water all day long,
16:26 what's going to be happening?
16:28 >>John: I'm going to be going to the bathroom all day long.
16:29 >>Dr. Westerdahl: You're going to be going, so,
16:30 you're losing that water.
16:32 You want to have water that's going to keep within the cells
16:35 and retained in there to keep them healthy.
16:36 So really, the best thing to get your water is to eat your water.
16:40 And that's another reason for eating a plant-based diet:
16:43 eating the raw fruits,
16:45 particularly raw fruits and vegetables,
16:47 have a water within their cells that's going to be much easier
16:50 to get within your cell.
16:51 >>John: Now, convince me that this isn't cranky.
16:54 I mean, I can imagine my friend in Tupelo, Mississippi,
16:56 or in Sedro-Woolley, Washington, or in Billings, Montana,
17:00 going, ugh, the guy wants to eat his water,
17:02 he wants to turn me into a rabbit.
17:04 Help me understand that this is good,
17:07 solid, healthy, level, mainstream stuff.
17:11 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yeah, this is, this is good science,
17:13 based on what we call the science of cellular water,
17:16 and is one of the concepts of aging: that we lose our water.
17:21 As we get older, there's no question,
17:23 our body water in the body cells,
17:26 the water within our cells are lost as we get older.
17:28 So we're trying to build healthy cells to keep that water within.
17:32 >>John: All right.
17:33 I'm a believer; I'm not a skeptic.
17:34 All right, what have we got here,
17:35 and what are we going to put into this machine?
17:36 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Okay, so, in order to build healthy cells
17:38 and, we're going to start with putting some antioxidants in.
17:42 This is pomegranate juice.
17:44 >>John: All right.
17:45 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Pomegranate juice is loaded with
17:46 antioxidants that...
17:47 >>John: Pomegranate juice.
17:48 >>Dr. Westerdahl: ...that, uh, help protect cells from damage.
17:51 >>John: All right.
17:52 That's good and red.
17:52 You mentioned before the red,
17:53 the reds and purples are good stuff.
17:55 >>Dr. Westerdahl: That's right.
17:56 >>John: Okay.
17:57 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And then we're going to put
17:58 a vegetable protein in here.
17:59 This is soy, soy milk.
18:01 >>John: All right.
18:02 >>Dr. Westerdahl: So that's going to provide you with
18:04 good-quality vegetable protein.
18:06 >>John: All right, and you get soy milk
18:07 at the supermarket, right?
18:08 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes.
18:09 And that's also part of the cell walls, good protein.
18:11 And then blueberries.
18:13 >>John: All right.
18:14 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Probably my favorite fruit.
18:15 Blueberries are loaded with those antioxidants
18:17 that protect cells from, um, being damaged.
18:20 >>John: I love blueberries.
18:21 Some of the best things you can get.
18:22 >>Dr. Westerdahl: So pour all the blueberries in there.
18:24 >>John: I enjoy growing blueberries.
18:25 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And then we're going to add something
18:26 that a lot of people may not know about.
18:28 This is what's called soy lecithin.
18:31 Now, people don't realize that every cell wall in your body
18:35 is made of lecithin.
18:37 So by contributing this, kind of supplementing to this drink
18:40 some lecithin that will go into your body,
18:42 so you can absorb it to build those healthy,
18:45 healthy, uh, cells as well.
18:47 >>John: Where do I get this from?
18:47 Can I buy it at the supermarket, or...
18:49 >>Dr. Westerdahl: You can buy that at the health food store.
18:51 It's usually in a canister or in the bulk bin,
18:53 and it comes from soybean oil, actually made from soybean oil.
18:57 It's a type of fat, a healthy fat.
18:59 >>John: That's good for you.
19:00 >>Dr. Westerdahl: That's good for you.
19:00 >>John: All right.
19:01 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And then we're going to add ground flax seed.
19:03 And flax seeds today are known as like the new fish oil.
19:07 Those are a plant-based, Omega-3 fatty acid.
19:10 >>John: Now, why are Omega-3s good?
19:11 They do what?
19:12 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids
19:14 that we need in our diet every day for good health.
19:17 And it's the type of fat that helps build that cell wall.
19:21 >>John: Has cancer-fighting properties too.
19:22 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Has cancer-fighting properties,
19:23 and there's heart-health properties as well.
19:25 >>John: By the way, if you can, if you can eat food
19:29 that's going to fight cancer, you might as well.
19:32 >>Dr. Westerdahl: That's right.
19:33 >>John: That's just good common sense.
19:35 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And then we're going to add something
19:37 that's unique to probably some of our viewers today,
19:39 and that's goji berries.
19:41 These are one of the most nutrient-dense foods
19:45 on the face of the earth.
19:46 Goji berries grow in China and the Himalaya areas,
19:50 and they're very rich in antioxidants as well.
19:52 >>John: Okay.
19:53 >>Dr. Westerdahl: So they're like the new superfood
19:55 that everyone's talking about.
19:56 >>John: Oh, yeah. Goji berries.
19:57 >>Dr. Westerdahl: So put those in.
19:59 You get those at the health food store.
20:00 >>John: Okay.
20:01 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Okay.
20:03 And I think what we're going to do to sweeten this,
20:05 we don't want to add sugar.
20:06 And I'm going to add an herbal sweetener called Stevia.
20:09 This is an interesting sweetener.
20:11 It comes from a green leaf grown in Paraguay,
20:14 and, uh, it's hundreds of times sweeter than sugar,
20:17 but there's no calories.
20:19 So we're going to put just a little bit of that
20:20 in as a sweetener.
20:23 It's not an artificial sweetener;
20:24 it's a natural sweetener.
20:25 >>John: Okay.
20:26 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And I think we'll blend this up
20:27 before we put the ice in.
20:28 >>John: Let me ask you a question.
20:29 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes.
20:31 >>John: If you can't find Stevia at a grocery store near you,
20:33 I don't know if they have that at Piggly-Wiggly or Vons,
20:37 or just where they have it.
20:38 What do I use in place of it?
20:39 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, Stevia's an optional ingredient,
20:40 if you want to make it sweeter.
20:41 >>John: All right, all right.
20:42 You don't have to.
20:43 >>Dr. Westerdahl: You don't have to add it.
20:44 So we've added it.
20:45 You bet.
20:46 Okay, and we're going to, uh,
20:48 are you going to turn it on now for me?
20:50 >>John: Well, why not? Here we go.
20:52 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And the Vitamix mixer/blender here.
20:54 [sound of blender]
20:56 And we'll blend that up.
20:59 And that's going to blend all the ingredients.
21:02 [blender running faster] Turn that off.
21:17 We'll add the crushed ice.
21:18 Now, crushed ice will just make it cooler.
21:20 So we'll add some uh, this in here.
21:24 [sound of ice dropping] That's good.
21:30 So you want to turn that on again, John?
21:30 >>John: Sure.
21:32 [sound of blender] >>Dr. Westerdahl: Okay.
21:47 [sound of blender] >>Dr. Westerdahl: Okay.
21:51 >>John: All right, what have we got?
21:52 What are the...
21:53 >>Dr. Westerdahl: And we have the anti-aging
21:55 smoothy here for you.
21:56 See what you think.
21:57 [sound of liquid pouring] Here you go.
22:00 >>John: All right.
22:02 All right, I'll take your word, I'll take your word for it.
22:09 Do I have to stop, or can I keep drinking?
22:10 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Oh. Go ahead!
22:12 >>John: I feel younger all ready.
22:14 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Good.
22:14 You look younger.
22:18 >>John: You know, that's good.
22:20 And if it means I'm going to live longer and healthier
22:22 and more prosperously, I'm all for it.
22:26 But that's pretty simple.
22:27 >>Dr. Westerdahl: It is. Very simple.
22:28 >>John: Foods that you can buy in most any supermarket.
22:30 If it's not at the supermarket, it's at the health food store.
22:32 And if you don't have a health food store in town near you,
22:35 drive to one, or move.
22:37 >>Dr. Westerdahl: [chuckles] >>John: That's not bad.
22:39 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Good.
22:40 >>John: And the idea of this is, this is going to promote
22:42 healthier cells that will retain intracellular water.
22:46 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes.
22:47 >>John: And you'll do better.
22:48 >>Dr. Westerdahl: That's right.
22:49 >>John: That's not bad!
22:50 Now, let me ask you another question.
22:51 Can I ask you about other smoothies
22:53 that are pretty popular today?
22:54 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Sure.
22:55 >>John: How about the idea of, like,
22:56 juicing kale and celery and carrots and that stuff?
22:59 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Those are anti-aging smoothies too.
23:01 >>John: They are?
23:02 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Yes, because you're getting the benefits
23:04 of those plant foods.
23:04 Those green foods are very important.
23:06 Most people don't get enough greens in their diet,
23:08 and has those antioxidants and lutein and these other
23:11 phytochemicals, because most people
23:13 don't eat a lot of greens.
23:14 >>John: Hmm.
23:16 >>Dr. Westerdahl: So it's a great way of getting vegetables
23:17 into the diet in these, in these types of smoothies.
23:19 >>John: Is there anything that you don't want
23:21 to be putting into them?
23:22 Are there any foods that you should just
23:23 stay away from as pro-aging?
23:25 >>Dr. Westerdahl: If you're adding ice cream to it
23:28 [chuckles] and some of these rich dairy products
23:29 and so forth, a lot of people do that.
23:31 Or they'll add a ton of sugar in it.
23:34 That, that really takes away from the health benefits.
23:36 >>John: Okay.
23:37 And why is chocolate cake not an anti-aging food?
23:40 Serious question.
23:41 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Chocolate cake, of course,
23:42 is loaded with sugar, fat, and, uh,
23:45 it's just, uh, eggs, and all types of things that they put
23:49 into chocolate cake that, uh, is going to promote aging.
23:52 And actually, those ingredients will damage the cell walls.
23:56 So that's the thing:
23:57 we want to get away from these foods that promote
24:00 the damage to our cells,
24:02 and eat foods that build healthy cells,
24:04 which build healthy bodies.
24:05 >>John: Now, how about when people go out to eat?
24:07 What should they be looking out for?
24:09 >>Dr. Westerdahl: First of all, eating out, there's a lot
24:10 of things that you don't know you're getting in your diet,
24:12 because they add a lot of additives
24:14 in their cooking, sometimes.
24:16 Um, you want to stay away from foods
24:18 that are very rich in cholesterol and saturated fat,
24:21 lots of cheese,
24:22 lots of deep-fat-fried foods and so forth.
24:26 But you can go out to eat and eat healthy, too.
24:28 You can eat anti-aging: going for the salads,
24:31 going for the vegetables, lean proteins.
24:34 Uh, that's a better way to go.
24:36 >>John: I read where one of the,
24:37 where one of the top chefs in New York City said, very openly,
24:40 that one of the great inside secrets is,
24:42 to make the food taste better, just add salt and fat.
24:47 >>Dr. Westerdahl: Well, there's a whole book written about that:
24:49 fat, salt and sugar.
24:51 And those are the things that are addictive substances to our,
24:54 to wanting to eat more of those types of foods.
24:56 So we need to learn how to eat closer to God's original plan,
25:01 eating those natural foods, those natural flavors
25:04 that He's put in all these foods right here.
