00:07 has stood the test of time. 00:12 God's book, the Bible. 00:17 Still relevant in today's complex world. 00:22 It Is Written ... 00:25 sharing hope around the globe. 00:36 Thanks for joining me today on It is Written. 00:38 I'm John Bradshaw and I am going to start today 00:41 by telling you a little story that might even be true. 00:46 [Background music]. A man is driving in heavy 00:48 traffic. And he's not having a good 00:50 morning on his way to work. He's getting worked up about 00:53 what the other drivers are doing, and he starts shouting 00:56 at the other motorists. Driving Man:"ARE YOU CRAZY?" 00:58 He gets so mad he starts pounding his steering wheel 01:01 and he shakes his fist when someone ducks quickly 01:03 in front of him. Driving Man:"LOSER!" 01:05 He honks his horn, makes a scene, and then 01:08 in his rear-view mirror he sees flashing lights. 01:11 He's being pulled up. "What in the world 01:15 have I done wrong?" he wonders. 01:16 I haven't broken any laws? So the police officer comes 01:19 -you know what happens-- takes his license and heads 01:21 back to his squad car while our man sits there brooding 01:24 and stewing. "What a terrible morning! 01:27 I'm late, all these people are driving like maniacs. 01:29 I'm going nowhere... and I get pulled up!" 01:32 He stews a while until the officer comes back and gives 01:36 him his license back. The man says, "Officer, 01:40 what did I do wrong? I don't think I was breaking 01:42 any laws! I wasn't driving dangerously!" 01:45 The police officer says, "I saw the way you were acting 01:48 back there - shouting, and screaming, and shaking 01:50 your fist, and honking on your horn..." 01:52 The man cut in and he said "Officer, you can't pull 01:55 someone up for shouting or shaking their fist, can you?" 01:59 The officer says, "That's not why I stopped you. 02:02 I saw the sticker on the back of your car that says, "God 02:05 bless you," and the other one on the back of your car that 02:08 says, "Honk if you love Jesus. 02:11 And then I saw your license place holder that says, 02:14 "Follow me to my church!" The officer said, "When I saw 02:18 all that, I thought you must have stolen that car!" 02:21 I know... I know ... 02:25 but the story makes a point. Very often God's people don't 02:29 get it right. And that goes for church 02:32 members, for pastors, church administrators and church 02:35 school teachers. Sometimes church leaders make 02:38 decisions nobody understands, and sometimes church folks 02:42 just blow it. You'll get differences 02:44 of opinion in church, personality clashes, hurt 02:48 feelings... And the saints will sometimes 02:50 respond by getting mad. I'm not going to come to 02:53 church anymore. I'm not going to return my 02:55 tithe or give offerings to the church anymore. 02:58 Some people choose to stay away from church altogether! 03:01 "I'm never going back THERE!" You know, people get upset 03:04 with hypocrites in the church and they stay away. 03:07 I'll tell you what I've told many people. 03:09 I've often said I'd rather go to church with hypocrites 03:12 than go to hell with hyprocrites! 03:14 Now you'll hear people say for a variety of reasons, 03:18 "I don't like my church". And I guess you can 03:21 understand that to a point. But wait a minute! 03:26 Just whose church is it anyway? 03:28 And when you figure that out, ask yourself how Jesus feels, 03:33 when He looks on, at HIS church. 03:36 How does Jesus feel when He sees the way people act in 03:40 church, the way they treat each other, the way they get 03:42 mad with each other, refuse to speak to each other. 03:45 You think there are things about your church that bug 03:47 YOU? Jesus sees it ALL. 03:50 He's there when parents go home from church and yell at 03:53 their kids, He sees when people smile at the preacher 03:58 and then criticize him all the way home in the car. 04:01 He is acquainted with all the different kinds of church 04:03 politics, He hears the gossip and He sees when God's people 04:07 say one thing and do another. Jesus sees dishonesty; he 04:11 sees the infidelity that sometimes goes on in church. 04:15 You think YOU have problems with what goes on in church? 04:18 How do you think JESUS feels?! 04:21 Well, the Bible opens some of this up to our understanding. 04:24 In the Book of Revelation Jesus comes straight out 04:28 and says what He doesn't like about His church. 04:31 You might be surprised with some of what he says, so 04:33 don't go away, I'll be right back. 04:37 [music] The Bible provides all 04:44 the information we need in order to walk with God 04:46 and be ready for the second coming of Jesus. 04:49 It outlines the signs of Jesus' return, and tells us what 04:52 to expect in regard to some major world 04:54 events. It also includes specific 04:57 information related to the United States, and 05:00 its role in the final events of earth's history. 05:03 Let me send you a free booklet called 05:05 “The United States in Bible Prophecy.” 05:07 Just call (800) 253-3000 and ask for your FREE copy of 05:12 "The United States in Bible Prophecy.” 05:15 If you don't get through the first time you call, 05:17 please do try again. Seven brief messages, 05:44 one each to seven different churches. 05:46 Now they were real churches that existed in John's day in 05:49 the area known in the Bible as Asia Minor, but today we 05:52 call that Turkey. The churches involved are 05:55 Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamos, Thyatira, Sardis, 05:59 Philadelphia and Laodicea. These were young 06:03 congregations when John wrote to them. 06:05 He wrote to them from the Island of Patmos, a Greek 06:07 Island in the Aegean Sea rather close to Turkey. 06:10 And he was on the Island of Patmos as a prisoner, 06:14 a prisoner for his faith. The Roman government had him 06:17 pegged as a troublemaker and a disturber of the peace. 06:20 Imprisoned for his faith, cut off from friends and 06:23 associates, John still has strong faith in God and he is 06:27 gifted by God with the revelation that ended up 06:30 being the Book of Revelation. John was writing at a time 06:34 when the Christians of Asia were suffering terrible 06:36 persecution, and these messages were designed to 06:39 encourage these poor souls and inspire them with hope. 06:43 And when you read the Book of Revelation you discover that 06:46 this is the first of the many 'sevens' in Revelation - 06:50 you've got seven Spirits, candlesticks, stars, seals, 06:53 trumpets, plagues, thunders... 06:56 When the number seven is used throughout the Bible 06:59 in a symbolic sense, it is generally understood 07:00 to indicate completeness or perfection. 07:03 And seeing as there were more than seven churches in Asia 07:06 Minor (there was Colosse and Hierapolis and others), 07:10 we conclude that Bible teachers have historically been 07:13 correct in believing that each of those seven churches 07:16 in early Revelation represents an era of church 07:20 history. Now the first church listed 07:22 correlates with the experience of the early Christian church 07:25 after Christ's death, while Laodicea, the last 07:29 of the seven, relates to the church of the last days. 07:32 Jesus has something to say to each church, and He doesn't 07:36 hold back. In fact, He tells them 07:39 exactly what He doesn't like about their situation. 07:43 Let's look together. The first church is the church 07:45 of Ephesus, and Jesus addresses Ephesus 07:48 with a glowing introduction. Revelation 2:2,3, he says: 07:53 "I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you 07:58 cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who 08:02 say they are apostles and are not, and have found them 08:05 liars; and you have persevered and have patience, 08:08 and have labored for My name's sake and have not 08:12 become weary." But... 08:15 They had their problems. In the very next verse, Jesus 08:18 says, "Nevertheless I have this against you, that you 08:22 have left your first love." Revelation 2:4 To have lost 08:28 your first love is a terrible thing. 08:31 Sometimes it happens in relationships, marriages. 08:34 It starts with flowers and text messages 08:38 and hand-written notes, but then spirals downward into habit 08:42 and routine. The nice little things that 08:45 used to happen are HISTORY. Too often that happens with 08:49 people and Jesus. They were always talking to 08:52 Him, always wanting to know more about Him, always 08:55 telling others how wonderful He was or is. 08:58 They were in love. But love gave way to 09:02 a familiarity that bred apathy. The fire went cold. 09:06 Not good. But Jesus shows us a way out. 09:10 And maybe you can relate to this. 09:12 Look at Revelation 2:5 "Remember therefore from 09:17 where you have fallen;" Remembering where you were 09:20 can spark a desire to get back there. 09:23 It's just like in a marriage. Remember. 09:26 You really had something - you could have that again. 09:29 And friend, if you really once had something with 09:32 Jesus, He's wants you to have that again. 09:36 Back to revelation, Chapter 2. "Remember therefore from 09:38 where you have fallen; repent and do the first works." 09:43 Revelation 2:5 John tells the church at Ephesus, Think of what 09:47 it used to be like. Remember where you used to be. 09:50 Then repent. And then do the first works 09:53 again. And if we don't? 09:55 Let's read the entire verse, Revelation 2:5 "Remember 09:59 therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the 10:02 first works, or else I will come to you quickly 10:05 and remove your lampstand from its place--unless you repent. 10:10 Revelation 2:5 The light will go out. 10:13 But Jesus can help you get that first love back. 10:16 He can heal a wounded relationship, 10:18 especially if that relationship is with Him. 10:21 The reward promised to the Ephesian church 10:23 is that it would - if faithful - eat of the tree of life (v7), 10:28 and that's promise is for us today. 10:31 You see, even though these letters were written to 10:34 actual churches long ago, we can see that they contain 10:36 counsel, advice - and hope - for us. 10:39 We will look at the remaining churches in just a moment. 10:43 [Music] Every Word is a one-minute 10:45 Bible-based daily devotional presented by 10:48 Pastor John Bradshaw and designed especially 10:50 for busy people like you. How do we make provision for 11:20 the flesh? Simple example: if you have a 11:23 drinking problem you're trying to kick, you wouldn't want 11:25 to meet your friends at a bar. You're setting yourself up 11:28 to fail. That would be making provision 11:30 for the flesh. If you're having trouble keeping 11:32 your thoughts where they ought to be, you might want to drive 11:35 to work a different way and avoid the suggestive billboards. 11:37 We make provision for the flesh when we cater to the flesh and 11:41 essentially put stumbling blocks in our way. 11:44 Some simple decisions can remove a lot of temptation and make our 11:47 spiritual lives a whole lot more successful. 11:51 I'm John Bradshaw for It Is Written. 11:53 Let's live today by Every Word. 11:57 [upbeat music] 12:01 In the book of Revelation you will find the letters to the 12:04 seven churches. A moment ago, we left off at 12:06 the church at Ephesus. Next is Smyrna. 12:10 Now Jesus doesn't have anything negative so say to 12:13 the church at Smyrna. This time period here is when 12:17 the church went through brutal persecution under the 12:19 Roman Caesars. The ten days mentioned in 12:21 verse 10 of Chapter 2 are said to refer to the 10 years 12:25 of persecution under the Emperor Diocletian when 12:29 thousands of people were martyred. 12:31 But during that time of intense persecution, the 12:33 church possessed an ardent love for Christ and His 12:36 truth. History says that when the 12:38 Bishop of Carthage was sentenced to die, the Christians listening 12:41 cried out, "We will die with him!" 12:44 Christ doesn't rebuke these faithful ones who have been 12:48 through so much, but He promises them in verse 10 12:51 that they will receive from Jesus "a crown of life." 12:55 You'll read in Rev 2:8 that Jesus says, "These things 13:00 saith the first and the last, which was dead and is alive." 13:04 Imagine the encouragement that would be! 13:07 Jesus says, "You're going through misery, but you know 13:10 what? I went through that too - I 13:12 died, but now I am alive." What an encouragement that 13:16 had to be for the believers in Smyrna, many of whom were 13:18 facing death. You know, Jesus doesn't 13:21 always deliver you from the calamity facing you, but He 13:24 promises you that if you're faithful in whatever comes 13:27 your way, ultimately you're going to experience the 13:30 greatest blessings imaginable. 13:32 When you're going through a difficult time you can know 13:35 that Jesus is near. You don't have to feel it, 13:37 just need to believe it. When the heat is turned up, 13:41 Jesus is close by. And this is what John told 13:44 the church at Smyrna. But then there's Pergamos. 13:49 Pergamos is in western Turkey about 20 miles from the 13:52 Aegean Sea. It was a fabulous city in 13:54 ancient times. It had a library with 200,000 13:58 volumes in it - Mark Anthony gave the library to Cleopatra. 14:03 (She must have liked to read! Today I guess he'd just give 14:06 her a Kindle or a Nook or an e-book or an e-book reader 14:09 or something.) There was a theatre there that seated 14:11 10,000 people, and they say it had the steepest seating 14:15 of any known theatre in the ancient world. 14:17 Now this is the church period when Christianity became 14:20 popular under the Roman Emperor Constantine. 14:22 And just what does Jesus say He doesn't like about His 14:27 church? We'll look in Revelation 14:29 2:14: "But I have a few things against you, because 14:34 you have there those who hold the doctrine of Balaam, who 14:37 taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the 14:39 children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, 14:42 and to commit sexual immorality." 14:45 So what was it with Balaam? His whole story is one that 14:49 it would be good to take up at length if we had the time. 14:52 Balaam was a prophet of God, one of God's people, and the 14:56 Moabites wanted him to curse Israel to weaken Israel so 15:00 that Israel could be overcome. 15:02 According to 2 Peter 2:15, Balaam loved the wages 15:07 of unrighteousness. He was a covetous man, 15:10 and when he was offered large sums to turn against God's 15:14 people, it was too much for him to refuse. 15:17 He refused once, but the second time he refused 15:20 and then, then he said to the men sent to him, hang around, 15:24 while I enquire further of the Lord. 15:25 As though God was going to change his mind! 15:28 Balaam was the one who had a conversation with a donkey, 15:30 met with an angel and STILL carried on in his own evil 15:33 way, because he wanted the money. 15:36 Balaam speaks to those of us who are motivated by our own 15:39 desires and not by God's desires. 15:42 Balaam would have had no trouble knowing God's will 15:45 if only God's will had been the same as HIS will, 15:48 and sometimes some of God's people are like that. 15:51 Some folks want their own way, and not God's way. 15:54 That was Balaam's issue, and John writes to a church that 15:57 was wrestling with that. And in that period when 15:59 Christianity became popular because the state was smiling 16:03 on it, things evidently got a little easy for believers. 16:07 Not always the best thing. The overcomer in Pergamos 16:11 is promised the hidden manna - the forever spiritual food 16:15 of the believer which promises eternal life and health- 16:18 the white stone of the high priest also, and the new name 16:21 indicating a victorious experience and a changed 16:25 character. Friend, thank God we can all 16:27 have that. Now to the church of Thyatira 16:32 in verse 20, Jesus says, "I have a few things against 16:35 you, because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls 16:38 herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants 16:42 to commit sexual immorality and to eat things sacrificed 16:45 to idols." In the Bible, Jezebel was 16:48 married to King Ahab and introduced all kinds 16:52 of falsehood into the midst of God's people. 16:55 In fact, Jezebel managed to mix light with dark, truth 17:01 with error, so that although Israel hadn't totally given 17:05 up on God, they were worshipping both God 17:08 and Baal. That's disastrous 17:10 for a Christian church, to be mixing truth with error, 17:12 light with dark, true worship with false worship. 17:16 Disastrous! God is looking for people who 17:19 will be faithful, radically committed to truth and right. 17:22 And then God says to this church, I will give you power 17:25 over all nations, that you will rule them. 17:27 Interesting - Jesus says, There's a lot I don't like 17:32 about my church, but I'm telling you that I'm going to 17:35 give you everlasting life, because I'm going to save you 17:38 anyway, if you want to be saved! 17:41 Now to Sardis (in Revelation 3:1,2) Jesus says this, 17:46 "I know your works, that you have a name that you are 17:50 alive, but you are dead. Be watchful, and strengthen 17:55 the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I have 17:59 not found your works perfect before God." 18:02 What a thing for Jesus to say to His church. 18:06 You're dead! Now that's a wake-up call! 18:08 Dead people in the church. You think there's any of that 18:12 today? Now here's the good news. 18:15 Remember the prodigal son? His father said, "My son was 18:18 dead, but now he's alive." The gospel is the work of 18:22 bringing the spiritually dead back to life. 18:25 So Christ says to the church in Sardis, in Revelation 3, 18:29 "He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, 18:34 and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; 18:37 but I will confess his name before My Father and before 18:41 His angels." I'm glad the Lord is able to 18:45 raise the dead. That means there's hope for 18:48 all of us! Now the church in 18:52 Philadelphia. It doesn't appear that Jesus 18:54 reproves this church at all. He does say the church has 18:57 little strength, but maybe that's a commendation, that 19:00 they have strength at all. It is said that the time 19:03 period represented here is the time after the 19:05 Reformation has taken place. And if you study that 19:08 history, you'll see that the church got stuck in a rut 19:10 after the reformation had brought it back to life. 19:13 But then God makes another promise to a faltering body 19:16 of believers: God's promise to his church is to be 19:20 a pillar in the temple, and to have His new name. 19:24 See, we receive the character of Christ, because we receive 19:29 the gift of His life. Then Laodicea, which 19:33 correlates with the church in the last years of Earth's 19:36 history. Notice what God says: This is 19:39 Revelation 3:15,16. "I know your works, that you 19:45 are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold 19:48 or hot. So then, because you 19:51 are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out 19:55 of My mouth." Lukewarm -- not cold or hot. 20:00 The result is that God will spew many of these people out 20:03 of His mouth. And if I can be agricultural 20:06 for just a moment, spewing is not a voluntary action. 20:10 It is involuntary. Which is to say, this isn't 20:13 something God wants to do, or tries to do, but it is 20:15 something He has to do. Something very curious here 20:19 is that there is something in God's eyes that is worse than 20:23 being against God, and that is being lukewarm. 20:28 To be going through the motions as a Christian is 20:30 more dangerous than to be opposed to God. 20:34 You see, if you're self-deceived - that is truly 20:37 hazardous to your spiritual well-being. 20:39 And clearly it is entirely possible to be in that 20:42 condition. I heard a few years ago about 20:44 people living in a part of Rhode Island. 20:46 They thought they had lived their whole life but when 20:48 the map was re-examined it was found that they 20:52 had actually been living the entire time in Connecticut, 20:55 even though they had a Rhode Island zip code, 20:57 area code, address, the whole thing. 20:59 All their lives they lived in a state different to the 21:02 state they thought they were living in! 21:05 You know that can happen to Christians, who think they're 21:07 fine but they're not because they're self-deceived. 21:13 Reading Revelation 3:17 and on. 21:17 "Because you say, 'I am rich, have become wealthy, and have 21:21 need of nothing'--and do not know that you are wretched, 21:24 miserable, poor, blind, and naked--" (Revelation 3:17) 21:27 They are self-deceived. Man, is there any hope? 21:30 Yes there is. Here is what the Bible says: 21:33 "I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, 21:38 that you may be rich; and white garments, that you 21:41 may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be 21:45 revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you 21:49 may see. As many as I love, I rebuke 21:53 and chasten. Therefore be zealous 21:56 and repent." Revelation 3:18-19 Gold tried 22:00 in the fire. Someone said that's faith 22:03 that works by love. White garments - 22:06 the righteousness of Christ. And that eye salve? 22:10 That's the Holy Spirit - He can help us to see 22:12 as He sees. And notice what God tells us 22:15 to do. Be zealous, and repent. 22:19 God calls us to have zeal for Him. 22:22 You know what zeal is? Enthusiasm. 22:25 Passion. Fervor. 22:26 Ardor. Are you passionate 22:28 for Christ? Because I'll tell you what, 22:31 he's passionate about you. Are you fervent for Jesus? 22:34 Are you ardent for God? God says that if we open up 22:38 the door of our hearts to Jesus, He'll come in and then 22:42 he will allow us to sit with Him on His throne. 22:47 Isn't it amazing? God tells us candidly exactly 22:51 what He thinks is wrong with His church, what he doesn't 22:54 like about his church and the things that look bad. 22:56 A group that has left its first love; that is tied up 23:00 in the same mess as Balaam was, that tolerates 23:03 the foolishness of Jezebel, and whose works 23:06 are not perfect before God. There are people claiming 23:09 to be believers who really are not, and people who have 23:12 deceived themselves into thinking they're okay when 23:15 they're a total spiritual basket case. 23:18 Is it any wonder there are people who say they don't 23:21 like their church? Hold on. 23:23 Hold on. What is Jesus saying? 23:26 Jesus, who died for this church, only points out the foibles 23:31 of it in an effort to spur it on to repentance. 23:36 And through it all, Jesus is depicted as being 23:38 in the midst of His church. He has the leaders in His 23:43 hand, according to Revelation 1, and He stands with His 23:46 people. So even if you're at the 23:49 point where you're about to say, The church is just too 23:53 bad, remember that it's Christ's church and He has all the help 23:59 we need to be all that He can help us to be. 24:03 And if you're dissatisfied with the Church, 24:05 disillusioned with Christianity because of what 24:07 you see in the church, these 7 messages help us to see 24:11 that Jesus is still with the church. 24:14 No point trying to tear the church down, when Jesus 24:17 is trying to build it up. You don't have to be a genius 24:19 to see the shortcomings of something, but seeing 24:22 the way out of the mire takes some vision. 24:27 If Jesus can list the weaknesses of the church and still see 24:29 a future for it, then we can apply this 24:31 on a personal basis. The church is made up of people, 24:34 and if there's a future for a wayward church, 24:37 there has to be a future for a wayward person. 24:39 There has to be hope for a struggling soul. 24:42 You know there's hope for a lost sheep. 24:45 I hope you'll pardon this story I'm about to tell you, 24:48 but it's true and I think it makes the point. 24:50 In the city of Suwa in Japan, city authorities found 24:55 treasure in an unexpected place. 24:59 In an effort to get rid of the city's sewage waste, 25:02 they decided to incinerate it. They had been having someone 25:07 take it away and paying for someone to do that. 25:09 They decided they would burn it down into industrial waste. 25:12 Now what do you think they found in the ashes? 25:16 They found gold - $200,000 worth a year. 25:21 See, mineral waters flow through the town, and there's 25:23 an industry in the area that uses gold to gold-plate 25:26 things. So even though it is in 25:28 the sewage in tiny amounts, it's there, and when they stuff 25:32 is burned up, this gold remains and can be seen in the ashes 25:37 of the waste! Sewage - just sewage -- 25:40 and there was valuable treasure in it! 25:43 Before you decide that something worthless, consider that God 25:47 can find great worth where you'd least expect it. 25:51 That goes for His church, it goes for you, and thank God 25:55 it goes for me. We are valuable in God's eyes 25:59 - His church is so valuable he considered it to be worth 26:04 the cost of the life of his own Son. 26:08 How valuable does that make you? 26:12 Let's pray. Father in heaven, thank you 26:15 that even though Jesus is able to say "here's what I 26:17 don't like about my church" we can know that Jesus still 26:20 values it and every circumstance and situation 26:24 shows a way out or a way back. 26:26 Thank you, Lord, that even if we are struggling, even if we 26:29 are getting it wrong, there is a way out and there is a 26:31 way back. Let us be encouraged that 26:33 we've always got hope in Jesus and thank you for that. 26:36 In Jesus' name, Amen. 26:43 The Bible provides all the information we need 26:45 in order to walk with God and be ready for the second 26:48 coming of Jesus.
