10:17 A “good” person might say, 10:19 "I'm a good person and surely judgment 10:22 is for other people and not me." 10:23 Well, let's think about this. 10:25 In Matthew 7 and verse 21, Jesus says that theres gonna come 10:28 a time when many people will come to Him and say, 10:31 "Lord, Lord, haven't we done wonderful works in Your name?" 10:34 They talk about having done such things as healing the sick and 10:38 working miracles, good things, for sure! 10:41 And yet Jesus surprises these people by saying, 10:44 "I never knew you!" 10:46 There's a question to who they really are. 10:49 Now, maybe they had done some things in their lives 10:52 that were laudable. 10:53 But here, they run to Jesus, they call Him “Lord,” 10:56 while Jesus knows what they're really like. 10:59 They are pretenders. 11:01 Phonies. 11:03 There's a Bible story that illustrates this perfectly. 11:08 The children of Israel entered the Promised Land, 11:10 and not long after they're approached by a group of people 11:12 claiming to be from a distant country. 11:14 "We heard of you, and about your great God, 11:17 and we traveled a long distance to join ourselves to you 11:20 and to be your servants.” 11:22 And Joshua says, "Great! Glad to have you on board. 11:25 Welcome to Canaan!" 11:27 And then, not too long afterward, 11:29 it comes to light that these people are not 11:32 pilgrims from a distant country. 11:34 They're the Gibeonites, from very nearby in Canaan. 11:37 They were enemies of God! 11:40 But Joshua never checked. 11:43 He took their word for it! 11:44 And so the Gibeonites became joined to God's people, 11:47 and even though a system was devised 11:48 to make that arrangement work as well as possible, 11:51 it caused some real problems. 11:53 As much as God might like for everyone to be saved eternally, 11:58 He knows, and we know, 12:00 that God cannot allow a bunch of pretenders into His kingdom. 12:04 So, before eternity comes there's going to be a judgment, 12:08 a time when God can ascertain 12:09 who really has chosen Him genuinely, 12:11 and a time when He can separate out, 12:14 if you like, those who really are not true believers, 12:16 though they claim to be. 12:18 This isn't God trying to find out something 12:20 He doesn't already know. 12:22 It's much like an audit, if you like, 12:24 where God reviews the records, 12:27 reviews the claims that people have made, 12:29 and He sees how those claims stack up against reality. 12:33 Simple example: 12:35 when you cross a border and enter another country, 12:37 you usually have to hand over some identification 12:40 and perhaps some documentation. 12:42 The last time I crossed into Canada from the United States, 12:45 I arrived at the border claiming I'm a trustworthy guy, 12:48 that I'm not there to cause trouble, 12:50 and that I'm wanting to go into Canada for legitimate reasons. 12:53 I don't want to be a hindrance or a nuisance. 12:54 So, I hand over some documents. 12:57 Then the border guard asks me some questions. 12:59 "Why are you coming into Canada? 13:01 Why are you crossing the border at this time of night? 13:04 How long have you known that guy you're with and, 13:06 and why are you with him?" 13:08 Now, was it really necessary for the border guard 13:11 to ask me those questions? 13:13 No of course not! 13:14 He could have just trusted me, right? 13:18 So why didn't he? 13:19 Why didn't he just take my word for the fact that I was 13:22 a good guy there to do good things? 13:24 Because I might not have been telling the truth. 13:27 How does he know that I'm not trouble? 13:29 So he checks out my documents, looks at his computer, 13:32 asks me some questions, and then, 13:34 when he's satisfied I'm on the level, 13:36 and that I'm not a threat to Canadian national security, 13:38 he lets me into the country. 13:40 Now, that's really how the judgment works. 13:42 You've got a mass of people who claim that they're loyal to God 13:45 and won't pose a threat to the stability of heaven. 13:48 Should we ask God to let those people into heaven 13:51 based on their word? 13:52 Or would it be slightly more responsible of God 13:55 to look at the documentation, the books of record, 13:59 and perhaps do a little investigating to see 14:01 if Person A really is what he or she claims to be? 14:05 And let's take that up a notch. 14:07 Not only is it important that that border guard 14:10 ensure justice is done, 14:13 it is also imperative that he be seen to ensure justice is done. 14:19 God could just wave a lot of people through 14:21 and into the kingdom knowing they're okay, 14:23 but there's a universe looking on, 14:26 and it's vital that God Himself is not only just, 14:29 but that He's seen to be just in the process 14:33 of judging the world. 14:34 The Bible says in Romans 3 and verse 23, 14:37 you might know this verse, 14:39 "...all have sinned, 14:41 and have come short of the glory of God." 14:43 And then just a page or so over, the Bible says, 14:46 "For the wages of sin is death; 14:49 but the gift of God is eternal life 14:51 through Jesus Christ our Lord." 14:53 So, in the judgment process, in this auditing process, 14:59 God is looking to see whether we've really chosen His gift 15:02 of eternal life through Jesus, 15:04 or whether we've only made some sort of hollow claim 15:07 to God's grace. 15:09 God's asking the question, 15:10 "Who, really, are you?" 15:13 It reminds me of that 70s song by The Who, 15:16 who sang, 15:16 "Oh, I really want to know, Who Are You?" 15:20 Now, I'm not sure how many times The Who have popped up 15:22 in a discussion about God's working with human beings, 15:24 but, that's really what God is asking in the judgment. 15:27 "Who are You? 15:28 You say you're one thing, 15:30 but because the truth could be otherwise, 15:32 I'm going to conduct this audit. 15:34 And we'll find out who you are. 15:36 And if you are who you claim to be, 15:38 if you're really My child, 15:40 then you've got nothing to fear." 15:43 Let me ask you, have you ever been audited? 22:23 The same is true with the judgment. 22:25 God is going to be checking to see if the people 22:27 who have claimed to be followers of Jesus 22:29 really are followers of Jesus. 22:31 And if they are, there's nothing at all to fear. 22:35 The very good news is that God is on your side in the judgment. 22:40 Imagine arriving in God's courtroom, 22:41 and having Satan turn up to sit through your trial. 22:44 I think we could expect that he'd be there 22:46 saying something like, 22:47 "John Bradshaw, is not worth it. 22:50 Look at all the sins that he's committed. 22:52 I know what he did because I tempted him 22:53 to do everything that he did, that's all the bad things. 22:56 You can't forgive him. 22:58 His sins are too bad. 23:00 If you can forgive him 23:01 then You have to let me back into heaven, too." 23:03 Imagine that, 23:05 knowing that the devil is right there and that over the years 23:08 you've made a lot of mistakes and committed a lot of sins. 23:11 I'd probably feel as though I was about to lose the case. 23:15 There'd be nothing I could do 23:16 to get myself out of my predicament. 23:18 But just when I feel it's all over for me, 23:22 maybe Jesus would say something like, 23:23 "Father, yes, you can save that one. 23:26 Yes, I know that that John Bradshaw has sinned. 23:29 I know his sins were serious. 23:31 But I died for him. 23:33 He has repented, and he has been forgiven. 23:36 He belongs to Me. 23:37 I bought him with My life." 23:41 Let's look at a wonderful Bible text 23:43 that helps us to explain this a little more clearly. 23:46 In your imagination, 23:47 think of Jesus suffering on the cross. 23:49 Of course He was suffering from great physical agony. 23:52 Think about what He'd just gone through. 23:54 But listen to this, it's in Psalm 40 and verse 12. 23:57 Psalm 40, verse 12 says, 24:00 "For innumerable evils have compassed Me about: 24:03 Mine iniquities have taken hold upon Me, 24:05 so that I'm not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of 24:08 My head; therefore My heart fails Me." 24:13 Jesus says, "My" iniquities were on Him. 24:18 But we know that He didn't sin. 24:20 Those were our sins that He took upon Himself on the cross. 24:23 Isaiah wrote that Jesus "was wounded for our transgressions, 24:26 He was bruised for our iniquities." 24:27 The burden of our sin was so great, 24:30 that after only six hours on that terrible cross, 24:34 He suffered from heart failure and died. 24:37 Jesus took our sins upon Himself. 24:41 So when our names come up in judgment, God checks to see 24:44 if we've given up our sins and handed them over to Jesus, 24:49 and then lived in connection with Him. 24:51 That's all. 24:53 Micah chapter 7 and verse 19 says, 24:55 "He will turn again, 24:56 He will have compassion upon us; He will subdue our iniquities; 25:01 and Thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths 25:04 of the sea." 25:05 You know, there's a place where the Pacific Ocean 25:08 is nearly 36,000 feet deep, 11,000 meters! 25:13 Deeper than Mount Everest is tall. 25:15 That's deep! 25:16 What God wants us to catch here is that if we confess our sins 25:20 that he will take our sins away. 25:21 And when our names come up in the judgment 25:23 He will declare that we are clean and we belong to Him. 25:27 Should we fear God? 25:29 And fear judgment? 25:31 I remember a teacher at my high school 25:32 that we used to call Bookes. 25:33 He walked straight and always carried an umbrella 25:36 and we all had a deadly fear of him. 25:38 We pretty much tried to keep out of his way 25:40 in case he pointed that umbrella at one of us. 25:43 If that happened, your number was up. 25:45 Punishment would follow. 25:47 Of course that never ever happened to me. 25:49 But remember, God is not looking for reasons to punish us. 25:55 He's already got all the reasons He needs! 25:57 God's looking to save us, to get us into His eternal kingdom. 26:04 And that's good news. 26:06 When I was a boy my brother did something wrong 26:08 that my father wanted to address. 26:11 Now, Dad knew who the transgressor was 26:12 but he let some time pass so that my brother 26:15 would have an opportunity to confess his fault. 26:18 My dad was a just man and he wanted my brother 26:20 to examine himself and, and then set this problem right. 26:24 My father at the time 26:25 worked on the old-fashioned telephone exchange. 26:27 My brother called him at 5 o'clock one morning and said, 26:31 "Dad, it was me." 26:34 "Okay, my boy," Dad said. 26:35 "Let's just leave it there." 26:39 Dad gave my brother some insight that day into what God is like. 26:42 We can go to God and we can say, 26:44 "Lord, it was me." 26:46 And God will say something just like that. 26:48 "Okay, my child, let's leave it there." 26:52 With a heavenly Father like that, 26:55 you don't have to fear judgment. 26:57 You can face the future with confidence. 27:00 God wants to know, the real you. 27:04 And He wants you to know, the real God. 27:08 Let's pray together. 27:10 Our Father in Heaven, 27:11 I thank You, that You really are a God of love, 27:15 who sent His Son into the world not to condemn us, 27:18 but so that through Him we might be saved. 27:21 We have so many faults. 27:23 Here they are. 27:25 Please, would You take our heart, and make it Yours. 27:28 Live Your life in us, cleanse us, 27:32 forgive us, and we look forward to that judgment. 27:36 We know that when our name comes up, 27:38 the sins will all be gone, because of what Jesus has done. 27:42 We are confident today in Your love and Your goodness. 27:45 And we pray, in Jesus' name, 27:48 Amen. 27:54 ♪[Music]♪ 28:08 ♪[Music]♪ 28:17 I'd love you to have today's free offer, 28:19 “Messiah and the Judgment,” 28:21 from our “Revelation Today: The Mysteries Revealed” series. 28:24 The DVD of the “Messiah and the Judgment.” 28:28 Call us on 800-253-3000, 28:31 or visit us online at itiswritten.com. 28:34 “Messiah and the Judgment” 28:36 on DVD will go deep into Bible prophecy. 28:38 Make it yours free. 28:40 800-253-3000, 28:43 or visit us online at itiswritten.com. 28:47 Thank you for remembering that It Is Written exists 28:49 because of the kindness of people just like you. 28:52 To support this international life-changing ministry, 28:55 please call us now at 800-253-3000. 28:59 You can send your tax-deductible gift 29:01 to the address on your screen, 29:02 or you can visit us online at itiswritten.com. 29:06 Thank you for your prayers and for your financial support. 29:09 Our number again is 800-253-3000. 29:13 Or you can visit us online at itiswritten.com. 29:17 Thanks for joining me today. 29:19 I look forward to seeing you next time. 29:21 Until then, remember: 29:22 “It is written: 29:24 ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, 29:27 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'” 29:32 ♪[Theme music]♪ |
