00:15 Hello and welcome back to His Words Are Life.
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer and today we're going to be reading together
00:21 from the book of Jeremiah. But let's pray before we start.
00:26 Dear heavenly Father, I ask your forgiveness for all the times
00:31 that I have turned aside from leaning on you and trusting in
00:36 you. For all of us who are about to read your word together to
00:41 Israel through the prophet Jeremiah, let us also see the
00:44 ways that today we trust and we take confidence in things apart
00:49 from you. And please help us to learn to trust completely and
00:54 to turn to you for guidance every step of the way. We love
00:58 you so much and thank you for loving us. I pray in the name of
01:01 your Son Jesus, Amen. Reading in the book of Jeremiah
01:05 and it is a continuing discourse and review of how God's people
01:11 turn aside time and again from following his word, from
01:16 trusting in him and they turn to other gods, they turn to other
01:20 false prophets, looking to hear and to find something that would
01:24 give them security and give them assurance. And God keeps calling
01:28 them back to himself and pronouncing judgments on
01:32 them saying your own ways are going to bring upon you your
01:35 downfall. We will pick up now in Jeremiah chapter 16,
01:39 verse 13 and this is the King James Version.
01:42 Therefore will I cast you out of this land into a land that ye
01:47 know not, neither ye nor your fathers; and there shall ye
01:51 serve other gods day and night; where I will not shew you favor.
01:55 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that it
01:58 shall no more be said, The Lord liveth, that brought up the
02:02 children of Israel out of the land of Egypt; but, the Lord
02:05 liveth, that brought up the children of Israel from the land
02:09 of the north, and from all the lands whither he had driven
02:13 them: and I will bring them again into their land that I
02:16 gave unto their fathers. Behold, I will send for many fishers,
02:21 saith the Lord, and they shall fish them; and after will I send
02:25 for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain,
02:29 and from every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks.
02:32 For mine eyes are upon all their ways: they are not hid from my
02:37 face; neither is their iniquity hid from mine
02:41 eyes. And first I will recompense their iniquity
02:45 and their sin double; because they have defiled my land, they
02:49 have filled mine inheritance with the carcasses of their
02:54 detestable and abominable things. O Lord, my strength, and
02:58 my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the
03:03 Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth, and
03:06 shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and
03:10 things wherein there is no profit. Shall a man make gods
03:14 unto himself, and they are no gods? Therefore, behold I will
03:19 this once cause them to know, I will cause them to know mine
03:25 hand and my might; and they shall know that my name is the
03:30 Lord. Continuing in Jeremiah chapter
03:33 17 and this is the King James Version.
03:37 The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron, and with the
03:41 point of a diamond: it is graven upon the table of their heart,
03:46 and upon the horns of your altars; whilst their children
03:50 remember their altars and their groves by the green trees upon
03:54 the high hills. O my mountain in the field, I will give thy
03:58 substance and all thy treasures to the spoil, and thy high
04:02 places for sin, throughout all thy borders. And thou, even
04:06 thyself, shalt discontinue from thine heritage that I gave thee;
04:10 and I will cause thee to serve thine enemies in the land which
04:14 thou knowest not: for ye have kindled a fire in mine anger,
04:18 which shall burn forever. Thus saith the Lord; Cursed be the
04:24 man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose
04:29 heart departeth from the Lord. For he shall be like the heath
04:35 in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but
04:40 shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt
04:44 land and not inhabited. Blessed is the man that trusteth in the
04:50 Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. For he shall be as a tree
04:55 planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the
04:59 river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall
05:03 be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought,
05:07 neither shall cease from yielding fruit. The heart is
05:13 deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can
05:19 know it? I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to
05:23 give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit
05:28 of is his doings. As the partridge setteth on eggs,
05:32 and hatcheth them not; so he that getteth riches, and not by
05:36 right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his
05:41 end shall be a fool. A glorious high throne from the beginning
05:47 is the place of our sanctuary. O Lord, the hope of Israel, all
05:53 that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart
05:56 from me shall be written in the earth, because they have
06:01 forsaken the Lord, the fountain of living waters. Heal me, O
06:05 Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved:
06:11 for thou art my praise. Behold, they say unto me, Where is the
06:16 word of the Lord? let it come now. As for me, I have not
06:20 hastened from being a pastor to follow thee: neither have I
06:24 desired the woeful day; thou knowest: that which came out of
06:28 my lips was right before thee. Be not a terror unto me: thou
06:33 art my hope in the day of evil. Let them be confounded that
06:38 persecute me, but let not me be confounded: let them be dismayed
06:44 but let not me be dismayed: bring upon them the day of evil,
06:49 and destroy them with double destruction. Thus said the Lord
06:53 unto me; Go and stand in the gate of the children of the
06:56 people, whereby the kings of Judah come in, and by the which
06:59 they go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem; and say
07:02 unto them, Hear ye the word of the Lord, ye kings of Judah, and
07:06 all Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem
07:08 that enter in by these gates.
07:10 Thus saith the Lord; Take heed to yourselves, and bear no
07:14 burden on the Sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of
07:18 Jerusalem; Neither carry forth a burden out of your houses on
07:22 the Sabbath day, neither do ye any work, but hallow ye the
07:26 Sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers. But they obeyed not,
07:31 neither inclined their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they
07:35 might not hear, nor receive instruction. And it shall come
07:40 to pass, if ye diligently hearken unto me, saith the Lord,
07:44 to bring in no burden through the gates of the city on the
07:48 Sabbath day, but hallow the Sabbath day, to do no work
07:52 therein; then shall there enter into the gates of this city
07:56 kings and princes sitting upon the throne of David, riding in
08:00 chariots and on horses, they and their princes, the men of
08:03 Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: and this city shall
08:07 remain forever. And they shall come from the cities of Judah,
08:10 and from the places about Jerusalem, and from the land of
08:13 Benjamin, and from the plain, and from the mountains, and from
08:16 the south, bringing burnt offerings, and sacrifices, and
08:19 meat offerings, and incense, and bringing sacrifices of praise,
08:23 unto the house of the Lord. But if ye will not hearken unto me
08:28 to hallow the Sabbath day, and not to bear a burden, even
08:31 entering in at the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day;
08:35 then will I kindle a fire in the gates thereof, and it shall
08:39 devour the palaces of Jerusalem and it shall not be quenched.
08:44 Continuing with Jeremiah chapter 18
08:47 and this is the King James Version.
08:51 The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, Arise,
08:55 and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause
08:59 thee to hear my words. Then I went down to the potter's house,
09:04 and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels. And the vessel
09:08 that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he
09:12 made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to
09:17 make it. Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
09:20 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith
09:26 the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are
09:31 ye in mine hand, O house of Israel. At what instant I shall
09:35 speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck
09:39 up, and to pull down, and to destroy it; if that nation,
09:43 against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will
09:47 repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.
09:49 And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and
09:53 concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it; if it do evil
09:57 in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the
10:02 good, wherewith I said I would benefit them. Now therefore go
10:06 to speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of
10:10 Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I frame evil
10:13 against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every
10:19 one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good.
10:24 And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own
10:29 devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil
10:34 heart. Therefore thus saith the Lord; Ask ye now among the
10:39 heathen, who hath heard such things: the virgin of Israel
10:45 hath done a very horrible thing. Will a man leave the snow of
10:49 Lebanon which cometh from the rock of the field? or shall the
10:54 cold flowing waters that come from another place be forsaken?
10:58 Because my people hath forgotten me, they have
11:02 burned incense to vanity, and they have caused them to stumble
11:07 in their ways from the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a
11:11 way not cast up; to make their land desolate, and a perpetual
11:16 hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished, and
11:21 wag his head. I will scatter them as with an east wind before
11:25 the enemy; I will shew them the back, and not the face, in the
11:31 day of their calamity. Then said they, Come and let us devise
11:36 devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from
11:40 the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the
11:43 prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us
11:47 not give heed to any of his words. Give heed to me, O Lord,
11:50 and hearken to the voice of them that contend with me. Shall evil
11:54 be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my
11:58 soul. Remember that I stood before thee to speak good for
12:02 them, and to turn away thy wrath from them. Therefore deliver up
12:05 their children to the famine, and pour out their blood by the
12:08 force of the sword; and let their wives be bereaved of their
12:11 children, and be widows; and let their men be put to death; let
12:15 their young men be slain by the sword in battle. Let a cry be
12:18 heart from their houses, when thou shalt bring a troop
12:22 suddenly upon them: for they have digged a pit to take me,
12:26 and hid snares for my feet. Yet, Lord, thou knowest all their
12:30 counsel against me to slay me: forgive not their iniquity,
12:33 neither blot out their sin from thy sight, but let them be
12:37 overthrown before thee; deal thus with them in the time of
12:41 thine anger. Continuing to read in Jeremiah
12:44 chapter 19 and this is the King James Version.
12:47 Thus saith the Lord, Go and get a potter's earthen bottle, and
12:51 take of the ancients of the people, and of the ancients of
12:56 the priests; and go forth unto the valley of the son of Hinnom,
12:59 which is by the entry of the east gate, and proclaim there
13:03 the words that I shall tell thee and say, Hear ye the word of the
13:08 Lord, O kings of Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem; thus
13:12 saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring
13:17 evil upon this place, the which whosoever heareth, his ears
13:22 shall tingle. Because they have forsaken me, and have estranged
13:27 this place, and have burned incense in it unto other gods,
13:31 whom neither they nor their fathers have known, nor the
13:35 kings of Judah, and have filled this place with the blood of
13:38 innocents; they have built also the high places of Baal, to burn
13:43 their sons with fire for burnt offerings unto Baal, which I
13:48 commanded not, nor spake it, neither came it into my mind:
13:52 therefore, behold, the days come saith the Lord, that this place
13:56 shall no more be called Tophet, nor The valley of the son of
14:01 Hinnom, but The valley of slaughter. And I will make void
14:05 the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place; and I
14:09 cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by
14:12 the hands of them that seek their lives: and their carcases
14:15 will I give to be meat for the fowls of the heaven, and for the
14:19 beasts of the earth. And I will make this city desolate, and an
14:23 hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished and
14:27 hiss because of all the plagues thereof. And I will
14:29 cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of
14:32 their daughters, and they shall eat every one the flesh of his
14:34 friend in the siege and straitness, wherewith their
14:37 enemies, and they that seek their lives,
14:39 shall straiten them.
