00:16 Hello, and welcome to "His Words Are Life."
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and today we're going to 00:21 continue reading together in the Book of Isaiah, 00:23 but let's pray before we start. 00:26 Dear, Heavenly Father, thank You for Your love for us 00:29 and for Your care of us. 00:31 And thank You for the provisions 00:34 that You give to each of us on our journey. 00:36 Thank You for the provision of the word of life right now. 00:40 Please, come and help us to hear and understand 00:43 the message You have for each of us here today. 00:45 We love You so much, and thank You for loving us, amen. 00:50 We're reading in the Book of Isaiah in Chapter 36, 00:53 and when we were last together, 00:55 we've begun an account where the king of Assyria 00:59 had sent his representative Rabshakeh unto King Hezekiah. 01:04 And we're in the middle of a dialogue 01:07 where Rabshakeh is delivering a message to Hezekiah. 01:11 And we're going to pick up in Isaiah 36 verse 7. 01:18 "But if thou say to me, We trust in the Lord our God, 01:21 is it not he, whose high places 01:24 and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, 01:27 and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, 01:30 Ye shall worship before this altar? 01:32 Now therefore give pledges, I pray thee, 01:35 to my master the king of Assyria, 01:37 and I will give thee two thousand horses, 01:40 if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them. 01:44 How then wilt thou turn away the face 01:46 of one captain of the least of my master's servants, 01:49 and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen? 01:53 And am I now come up without the Lord 01:55 against this land to destroy it? 01:57 The Lord said unto me, 01:59 Go up against this land, and destroy it. 02:03 Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto Rabshakeh, 02:08 Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants 02:10 in the Syrian language, for we understand it. 02:13 And speak not to us in the Jews' language, 02:16 in the ears of the people that are on the wall. 02:19 But Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master 02:22 and to thee to speak these words? 02:25 Hath he not sent me to the men 02:26 that sit upon the wall, 02:28 that they may eat their own dung, 02:29 and drink their own piss with you? 02:32 Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice 02:35 in the Jews' language, and said, Hear ye the words 02:38 to the great king, the king of Assyria. 02:41 Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you, 02:44 for he shall not be able to deliver you. 02:47 Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord, 02:50 saying, The Lord will surely deliver us, 02:53 this city shall not be delivered 02:54 into the hand of the king of Assyria. 02:56 Hearken not to Hezekiah, 02:58 for thus saith the king of Assyria, 03:00 Make an agreement with me by a present, 03:03 and come out to me, and eat ye every one of his vine, 03:07 and every one of his fig tree, 03:08 and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern. 03:10 Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, 03:13 a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards. 03:18 Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, 03:21 saying, the Lord will deliver us. 03:24 Hath any of the Gods of the nations delivered his land 03:27 out of the hand of the king of Assyria? 03:30 Where are the Gods of Hamath and Arphad? 03:32 Where are the Gods of Sepharvaim? 03:35 And have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? 03:39 Who are they among all the Gods of these lands, 03:41 that have delivered their land out of my hand, 03:43 that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand? 03:47 But they held their peace, and answered him not a word, 03:51 for the king's commandment was saying, Answer him not. 03:56 Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, 03:59 that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, 04:02 and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, 04:06 to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, 04:09 and told him the words of Rabshakeh. 04:13 Continuing with the story in Isaiah Chapter 37, 04:16 this is the King James Version. 04:20 And it came to pass, when King Hezekiah heard it, 04:24 that he rent his clothes, 04:25 and covered himself with sackcloth, 04:27 and went into the house of the Lord. 04:31 And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, 04:33 and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests 04:37 covered with sackcloth, 04:39 unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz. 04:44 And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, 04:47 This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, 04:50 and of blasphemy, 04:52 for the children are come to the birth, 04:54 and there is not strength to bring forth. 04:57 It may be the Lord thy God 04:59 will hear the words of Rabshakeh, 05:01 whom the king of Assyria his master 05:03 hath sent to reproach the living God, 05:05 and will reprove the words which the Lord 05:07 thy God hath heard, wherefore lift up thy prayer 05:11 for the remnant that is left. 05:13 So the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah. 05:17 And Isaiah said unto them, 05:19 Thus shall ye say unto your master, 05:23 Thus saith the Lord, Be not afraid of the words 05:27 that thou hast heard, wherewith the servants 05:30 of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. 05:34 Behold, I will send a blast upon him, 05:38 and he shall hear a rumor, and return to his own land, 05:42 and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land. 05:48 So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria 05:51 warring against Libnah, for he had heard 05:53 that he was departed from Lachish. 05:56 And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, 06:01 He is come forth to make war with thee. 06:03 And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah 06:05 saying, Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, 06:08 saying, Let not thy God, in whom thou trustest, 06:12 deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given 06:14 into the hand of the king of Assyria. 06:17 Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria 06:20 have done to all lands by destroying them utterly, 06:23 and shalt thou be delivered? 06:26 Have the Gods of the nations delivered them 06:28 which my fathers have destroyed, 06:30 as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, 06:33 and the children of Eden which were in Telassar? 06:36 Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arphad, 06:39 and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, 06:42 Hena, and Ivah? 06:44 And Hezekiah received the letter 06:46 from the hand of the messengers, and read it. 06:50 And Hezekiah went up unto the house of the Lord, 06:54 and spread it before the Lord. 06:57 And Hezekiah prayed unto the Lord, saying, 07:00 O Lord of hosts, God of Israel, 07:03 that dwellest between the cherubims, 07:06 thou art the God, even thou alone, 07:09 of all the kingdoms of the earth. 07:11 Thou hast made heaven and earth. 07:14 Incline thine ear, O Lord, and hear, 07:18 open thine eyes, O Lord, and see. 07:21 And hear all the words of Sennacherib, 07:23 which hath sent to reproach the living God. 07:27 Of a truth, Lord, the kings of Assyria 07:30 have laid waste all the nations, 07:32 and their countries. 07:33 And have cast their Gods into the fire, 07:36 for they were no Gods, but the work of men's hands, 07:39 wood and stone, therefore they have destroyed them. 07:43 Now therefore, O Lord our God, save us from his hand, 07:48 that all the kingdoms of the earth may know 07:51 that thou art the Lord, even thou only. 07:56 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent unto Hezekiah, 08:00 saying, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, 08:03 Whereas thou hast prayed to me 08:05 against Sennacherib king of Assyria. 08:08 This is the word which the Lord 08:09 hath spoken concerning him, the virgin, 08:14 the daughter of Zion, hath despised thee, 08:16 and laughed thee to scorn, the daughter of Jerusalem 08:20 hath shaken her head at thee. 08:22 Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? 08:25 And against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, 08:29 and lifted up thine eyes on high? 08:31 Even against the Holy One of Israel. 08:35 By thy servants hast thou reproached the Lord, 08:38 and hast said, By the multitude of my chariots 08:41 am I come up to the height of the mountains, 08:42 to the sides of Lebanon, 08:44 and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof, 08:46 and the choice fir trees thereof, 08:47 and I will enter into the height of his border, 08:49 and the forest of his Carmel. 08:51 I have digged, and drunk water, 08:53 and with the sole of my feet have I dried up 08:55 all the rivers of the besieged places. 08:59 Hast thou not heard long ago, how I have done it, 09:03 and of ancient times, that I have formed it? 09:06 Now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay 09:09 waste defensed cities into ruinous heaps. 09:12 Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, 09:17 they were dismayed and confounded, 09:19 they were as the grass of the field, 09:20 and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, 09:23 and as corn blasted before it be grown up. 09:27 But I know thy abode, and thy going out, 09:30 and thy coming in, and thy rage against me. 09:33 Because thy rage against me, and thy tumult, 09:36 is come up into mine ears, 09:37 therefore will I put my hook in thy nose, 09:41 and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back 09:46 by the way by which thou camest. 09:49 And this shall be a sign unto thee, 09:51 Ye shall eat this year such as groweth of itself, 09:56 and the second year that which springeth of the same, 09:59 and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, 10:04 and eat the fruit thereof. 10:06 And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah 10:10 shall again take root downward, 10:12 and bear fruit upward. 10:15 For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, 10:18 and they that escape out of mount Zion. 10:21 The zeal of the Lord of hosts shall do this. 10:26 Therefore thus saith the Lord 10:28 concerning the king of Assyria, 10:30 He shall not come into this city, 10:33 nor shoot an arrow there, 10:35 nor come before it with shields, 10:37 nor cast a bank against it. 10:40 By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, 10:45 and shall not come into this city, saith the Lord. 10:49 For I will defend this city to save it for mine own sake, 10:54 and for my servant David's sake. 10:58 Then the angel of the Lord went forth, 11:01 and smote in the camp of the Assyrians 11:03 a hundred and fourscore and five thousand. 11:08 When they arose early in the morning, 11:09 behold, they were all dead corpses. 11:13 So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, 11:16 and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh. 11:19 And it came to pass, 11:21 as he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his God, 11:25 that Adrammelech and Sharezer 11:27 his sons smote him with the sword, 11:31 and they escaped into the land of Armenia. 11:35 And Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead." 11:40 Continuing in Isaiah Chapter 38, 11:43 this is the King James Version. 11:47 "In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. 11:51 And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came unto him, 11:54 and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, 11:57 Set thine house in order, 11:59 for thou shalt die, and not live. 12:03 Then Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall, 12:07 and prayed unto the Lord. 12:09 And said, Remember now, O Lord, I beseech thee, 12:14 how I have walked before thee in truth 12:17 and with a perfect heart, and have done that 12:19 which is good in thy sight. 12:21 And Hezekiah wept sore. 12:25 Then came the word of the Lord to Isaiah, saying. 12:28 Go, and say to Hezekiah, Thus saith the Lord, 12:32 the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, 12:36 I have seen thy tears, behold, 12:39 I will add unto thy days fifteen years. 12:44 And I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand 12:46 of the king of Assyria. 12:48 And I will defend this city. 12:51 And this shall be a sign unto thee from the Lord, 12:54 that the Lord will do this thing that he hath spoken. 12:57 Behold, I will bring again the shadow of the degrees, 13:01 which is gone down in the sun dial of Ahaz, 13:05 ten degrees backward. 13:07 So the sun returned ten degrees, 13:10 by which degrees it was gone down. 13:14 The writing of Hezekiah king of Judah, 13:16 when he had been sick, 13:18 and was recovered of his sickness. 13:21 I was in the cutting off of my days, 13:24 I shall go to the gates of the grave. 13:28 I am deprived of the residue of my years. 13:32 I said, I shall not see the Lord, 13:34 even the Lord, in the land of the living. 13:37 I shall behold man no more 13:38 with the inhabitants of the world. 13:40 Mine age is departed, and is removed 13:43 from me as a shepherd's tent. 13:46 I have cut off like a weaver my life, 13:49 he will cut me off with pining sickness, 13:52 from day even to night wilt thou make an end of me. 13:56 I reckoned till morning, that, as a lion, 13:59 so will he break all my bones, 14:01 from day even to night wilt thou make an end of me. 14:05 Like a crane or a swallow, so did I chatter. 14:09 I did mourn as a dove, 14:11 mine eyes fail with looking upward, 14:13 O Lord, I am oppressed, undertake for me. 14:18 What shall I say? He hath both spoken unto me, 14:22 and himself hath done it. 14:23 I shall go softly all my years 14:27 in the bitterness of my soul. 14:29 O Lord, by these things men live, 14:33 and in all these things is the life of my spirit, 14:38 so wilt thou recover me, and make me to live." |
