00:16 Hello and welcome back to "His words are life."
00:19 I am Kelly Mowrer, and today we
00:20 are reading together in the book of Psalm.
00:23 We were in Psalm 78 when we were last reading.
00:28 and it's actually a Psalm of Asaph that is
00:30 recounting the deeds of God in the
00:32 history of Israel. And he recounts all
00:35 the things that God did, and yet Israel doubted
00:38 and rebelled and disobeyed and turned
00:40 from God, they did not seek him.
00:42 As we continue this today,
00:45 the Holy Spirit can bring to each
00:47 of our hearts, a deeper understanding
00:50 of ways in our own life when we have
00:52 not remembered properly the glory of
00:55 God that He has revealed to us,
00:57 and the power that he has worked in each
00:59 of our own lives, and we can ask Him to
01:01 renew in us a desire to seek Him and to
01:05 believe in His care and keeping for us in
01:07 whatever we are facing now,
01:09 because of all of the greatness of
01:11 His past care for us. Let's pray before we
01:13 start. Dear Lord, thank you that you
01:18 are with us always. Please forgive us
01:22 when we don't remember your greatness,
01:25 and your glory. Please bring to our
01:27 mind the power that you have shown us
01:30 of your love and of your mercy in the past,
01:33 so that in whatever we're facing right now,
01:36 we may know that you are in control because
01:38 you are our God. We love you so much,
01:40 and thank you for loving us,
01:42 in Jesus name I pray, amen.
01:45 We're picking up this account of Israel's
01:48 history in Psalm 78. This is the King James
01:51 Version beginning with verse 45.
01:55 He sent divers sorts of flies among them,
01:58 which devoured them; and frogs,
02:00 which destroyed them. He gave also their
02:03 increase unto the caterpillar,
02:05 and their labor unto the locust.
02:06 He destroyed their vines with hail,
02:08 and their Sycamore trees with frost.
02:11 He gave up their cattle also to the hail,
02:13 and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.
02:16 He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger,
02:19 wrath, and indignation, and trouble by sending
02:23 evil angels among them. He made a way
02:25 to his anger; he spared not their
02:27 soul from death, but gave their life over
02:29 to the pestilence; And smote all the
02:30 firstborn in Egypt; the chief of their
02:33 strength in the tabernacles of Ham:
02:36 But made his own people to go forth like sheep,
02:40 and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
02:44 And he led them on safely,
02:46 so that they feared not: but the sea overwhelmed
02:49 their enemies. And he brought them to
02:52 the border of his sanctuary,
02:54 even to this mountain, which his right hand
02:56 had purchased. He cast out the heathen
02:59 also before them, and divided them
03:01 an inheritance by line, and made the tribes
03:03 of Israel to dwell in their tents.
03:07 Yet they tempted and provoked the
03:10 most high God, and kept not his testimonies:
03:14 But turned back and dealt unfaithfully
03:16 like their fathers: they were turned aside
03:19 like a deceitful bow. For they provoked
03:21 him to anger with their high places,
03:22 and moved him to jealousy with their
03:25 graven images. When God heard this,
03:27 he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel:
03:31 So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh,
03:34 the tent which he placed among men;
03:36 And delivered his strength into captivity,
03:38 and his glory into the enemy's hand.
03:40 He gave his people over also unto the sword;
03:43 and was wroth with his inheritance.
03:46 The fire consumed their young men;
03:48 and their maidens were not given to
03:50 marriage. Their priests fell by the sword;
03:54 and their widows made no lamentation.
03:58 Then the LORD awaked as one out of sleep,
04:02 and like a mighty man that shouteth by
04:04 reason of wine. And he smote his
04:06 enemies in the hinder parts:
04:07 he put them to a perpetual reproach.
04:10 Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph,
04:13 and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:
04:16 But chose the tribe of Judah,
04:18 the mount Zion which he loved.
04:20 And he built his sanctuary like
04:22 high palaces, like the earth which
04:24 he hath established for ever.
04:27 He chose David also his servant,
04:29 and took him from the sheepfolds:
04:32 From following the ewes great with young
04:35 he brought him to feed Jacob his people,
04:37 and Israel his inheritance.
04:40 So he fed them according to the integrity
04:42 of his heart; and guided them
04:45 by the skillfulness of his hands.
04:48 Continuing with Psalm 79. O God,
04:52 the heathen are come into thine inheritance;
04:56 thy holy temple have they defiled;
04:58 they have laid Jerusalem on heaps.
05:00 The dead bodies of thy servants have
05:03 they given to be meat unto the fowls
05:06 of the heaven, the flesh of thy saints
05:09 unto the beasts of the earth.
05:12 Their blood have they shed like water
05:14 round about Jerusalem; and there was none to
05:16 bury them. We are become
05:19 a reproach to our neighbors,
05:20 a scorn and derision to them that are
05:24 round about us. How long, Lord?
05:28 Wilt thou be angry forever?
05:31 Shall thy jealousy burn like fire?
05:35 Pour out thy wrath upon the heathen
05:37 that have not known thee, and upon the kingdoms
05:39 that have not called upon thy name.
05:41 For they have devoured Jacob,
05:42 and laid waste his dwelling place.
05:45 O remember not against us
05:47 former iniquities: let thy tender mercies
05:51 speedily prevent us: for we are brought
05:54 very low. Help us, O God of our salvation,
05:57 for the glory of thy name: and deliver us,
06:00 and purge away our sins, for thy name's sake.
06:06 Wherefore should the heathen say,
06:07 Where is their God? Let him be known
06:10 among the heathen in our sight by the
06:12 revenging of the blood of thy servants
06:14 which is shed. Let the sighing of
06:17 the prisoner come before thee;
06:18 according to the greatness of thy
06:20 power preserve thou those that are
06:23 appointed to die; And render unto our
06:26 neighbors sevenfold into their bosom
06:28 their reproach, wherewith they have
06:30 reproached thee, O Lord. So we thy people
06:34 and sheep of thy pasture will give thee
06:36 thanks forever: we will show forth thy
06:39 praise to all generations.
06:43 Continuing with Psalm 80.
06:45 This is the King James Version. Give ear,
06:48 O Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph
06:51 like a flock; thou that dwellest
06:54 between the Cherubims, shine forth.
06:57 Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh
06:59 stir up thy strength, and come and save us.
07:03 Turn us again, O God, and cause
07:05 thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.
07:09 O Lord God of hosts, how long wilt thou be
07:12 angry against the prayer of thy people?
07:16 Thou feedest them with the bread of tears;
07:18 and givest them tears to drink in
07:19 great measure. Thou makest us a
07:22 strife unto our neighbors: and our enemies laugh
07:25 among themselves. Turn us again,
07:29 O God of hosts, and cause thy
07:31 face to shine; and we shall be saved.
07:36 Thou hast brought a vine out of Egypt:
07:38 thou hast cast out the heathen,
07:39 and planted it. Thou preparedst
07:42 room before it, and didst cause it
07:44 to take deep root, and it filled the land.
07:48 The hills were covered with the shadow of it,
07:49 and the boughs thereof were like
07:51 the goodly cedars. She sent out her
07:54 boughs unto the sea, and her branches
07:55 unto the river. Why hast thou then
07:58 broken down her hedges,
08:00 so that all they which pass by the way
08:02 do pluck her? The boar out of
08:05 the wood doth waste it, and the wild beast of
08:07 the field doth devour it. Return,
08:11 we beseech thee, O God of hosts:
08:13 look down from heaven, and behold,
08:16 and visit this vine; And the vineyard
08:19 which thy right hand hath planted,
08:21 and the branch that thou madest
08:23 strong for thyself. It is burned with fire,
08:28 it is cut down: they perish at the
08:30 rebuke of thy countenance.
08:34 Let thy hand be upon the man of
08:36 thy right hand, upon the son of man
08:40 whom thou madest strong for thyself.
08:43 So will not we go back from thee:
08:45 quicken us, and we will call upon thy name.
08:50 Turn us again, O Lord, God of hosts,
08:53 cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.
08:58 Psalm 81. This is the King James Version.
09:02 Sing aloud unto God our strength:
09:05 make a joyful noise unto the God of Jacob.
09:08 Take a Psalm, and bring hither the timbrel,
09:11 the pleasant harp with the psaltery.
09:13 Blow up the trumpet in the new moon,
09:15 in the time appointed on our solemn feast day.
09:18 For this was a statute for Israel,
09:20 and a law of the God of Jacob.
09:22 This he ordained in Joseph for a testimony,
09:26 when he went out through the land of Egypt:
09:28 where I heard a language that I understood not.
09:33 I removed his shoulder from the burden:
09:34 his hands were delivered from the pots.
09:38 Thou calledst in trouble, and I delivered thee;
09:42 I answered thee in the secret place of thunder:
09:45 I proved thee at the waters of Meribah.
09:48 Selah. Hear, O my people,
09:52 and I will testify unto thee: O Israel,
09:56 if thou wilt hearken unto me;
09:59 There shall no strange God be in thee;
10:03 neither shalt thou worship any strange God.
10:06 I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee
10:09 out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide,
10:12 and I will fill it. But my people
10:16 would not hearken to my voice;
10:19 and Israel would none of me.
10:22 So I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust:
10:25 and they walked in their own counsels.
10:28 Oh that my people had hearkened unto me,
10:31 and Israel had walked in my ways!
10:33 I should soon have subdued their enemies,
10:35 and turned my hand against their
10:37 adversaries. The haters of the Lord
10:41 should have submitted themselves unto him:
10:43 but their time should have endured forever.
10:45 He should have fed them also with the
10:48 finest of the wheat: and with honey
10:49 out of the rock, should I have satisfied thee.
10:54 Psalm 82. God standeth in the congregation
10:58 of the mighty; he judgeth among the Gods.
11:02 How long will ye judge unjustly,
11:04 and accept the persons of the wicked?
11:06 Selah. Defend the poor and fatherless:
11:10 do justice to the afflicted and needy.
11:13 Deliver the poor and needy:
11:15 rid them out of the hand of the wicked.
11:19 They know not, neither will they understand;
11:22 they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of
11:26 the earth ar out of course.
11:29 I have said, Ye are Gods; and all of you are
11:32 children of the most High.
11:33 But ye shall die like men,
11:35 and fall like one of the princes.
11:38 Arise, O God, judge the earth:
11:41 for thou shalt inherit all nations. Psalm 83.
11:46 This is the King James Version.
11:50 Keep not thou silence, O God: hold not thy peace,
11:54 and be not still, O God. For, lo,
11:56 thine enemies make a tumult:
11:58 and they that hate thee have
12:00 lifted up the head. They have taken
12:02 crafty counsel against thy people,
12:04 and consulted against thy hidden ones.
12:06 They have said, Come, and let us cut them off
12:09 from being a nation; that the name of Israel
12:11 maybe no more in remembrance.
12:14 For they have consulted together
12:16 with one consent: they are confederate
12:18 against thee: The tabernacles of Edom,
12:21 and the Ishmaelites; of Moab,
12:24 and the Hagarenes; Gebal, and Ammon,
12:27 and Amalek; the Philistines with
12:29 the inhabitants of Tyre; Assur also is joined
12:33 with them: they have holpen
12:34 the children of Lot. Selah. Do unto them
12:39 as unto the Midianites; as to Sisera,
12:42 as to Jabin, at the brook of Kison:
12:45 Which perished at Endor: they became as dung
12:47 for the earth. Make their nobles like Oreb,
12:51 and like Zeeb: yea, all their princes
12:53 as Zebah, and as Zalmunna: Who said,
12:57 Let us take to ourselves the houses
12:59 of God in possession. O my God, make them
13:03 like a wheel; as the stubble before the wind.
13:07 As the fire burneth a wood,
13:09 and as the flame setteth the mountains on fire;
13:11 So persecute them with thy tempest,
13:13 and make them afraid with thy storm.
13:16 Fill their faces with shame;
13:18 that they may seek thy name, O Lord.
13:21 Let them be confounded and troubled for ever;
13:23 yea, let them be put to shame, and perish:
13:26 That men may know that thou,
13:29 whose name alone is JEHOVAH,
13:32 art the most high over all the earth.
13:36 Psalm 84. How amiable are thy tabernacles,
13:41 O Lord of hosts! My soul longeth,
13:44 yea, even fainteth for the courts of the Lord:
13:48 my heart and my flesh crieth out
13:50 for the living God. Yea, the sparrow
13:53 hath found an house, and the swallow a
13:55 nest for herself, where she may lay her young,
13:59 even thine altars, O Lord of hosts,
14:00 my King, and my God. Blessed are they that
14:04 dwell in thy house: they will be still praising
14:07 thee. Selah. Blessed is the man
14:11 whose strength is in thee;
14:13 in whose heart are the ways of them.
14:15 Who passing through the valley of Baca
14:18 make it a well; the rain also filleth the pools.
14:23 They go from strength to strength,
14:26 every one of them in Zion appeareth
14:29 before God. O Lord God of hosts,
14:33 hear my prayer: give ear, O God of Jacob. Selah.
