00:15 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:17 We're going to continue today in reading the story of Job.
00:21 But before we start, let's pray together.
00:23 Dear heavenly father, please send the Holy Spirit now,
00:28 to be with us as we read these words, and may we each hear
00:33 from them the lessons you have for us today.
00:36 We love you so much. Thank you for loving us. Amen.
00:39 Job has lost his health, his children, his wealth,
00:48 the support of his wife, the support of his friends.
00:52 Everything is against him, and yet Job is arguing that he has
00:59 lived a life, blameless before God. Now his friends are
01:04 arguing that the only possible cause for all that has come to
01:09 Job's life is that he has some secret sin, and they're
01:12 entreating him to confess this and turn from it. And they're
01:15 going back and forth and discussing the role of tragedy
01:19 and suffering in the life of someone who serves the Lord.
01:22 What causes it? Why is it there? There's a lot of questions,
01:27 a lot of arguments, a lot of answers. We're picking up
01:30 the discussion in Job, chapter 22, as his friend
01:35 Eliphaz is saying to him, If you will return to the Lord,
01:39 he will put away your sin. We'll begin reading now in verse 25.
01:46 This is the King James Version. Yea, the Almighty shall be thy
01:50 defense, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.
01:52 For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty,
01:55 and thou shalt lift up thy face unto God. Thou shalt make thy
01:59 prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay
02:01 thy vows. Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be
02:04 established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.
02:07 When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting
02:12 up; and he shall save the humble person. He shall deliver the
02:16 island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness
02:21 of thine hands. We're continuing in Job, chapter 23.
02:25 This is the King James Version. Then Job answered and said,
02:29 even today is my complaint bitter: my stroke is heavier
02:33 than my groaning. Oh that I knew where I might find him!
02:37 that I might come even to his seat! I would order my cause
02:42 before him! and fill my mouth with arguments.
02:45 I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand
02:48 what he would say unto me. Will he plead against me with his
02:52 great power? No; but he would put strength in me.
02:55 There the righteous might dispute with him;
02:58 so should I be delivered for ever from my judge.
03:00 Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I
03:05 cannot perceive him: On the left hand, where he doth work,
03:09 but I cannot behold him: he hideth himself on the right hand
03:12 that I cannot see him: But he knoweth the way that I take:
03:17 when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.
03:24 My foot hath held his steps, his way have I kept,
03:29 and not declined. Neither have I gone back from the commandment
03:32 of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than
03:37 my necessary food. But he is in one mind, and who can turn him?
03:42 and what his soul desireth, even that he doeth.
03:46 For he performeth the thing that is appointed for me:
03:50 and many such things are with him. Therefore am I troubled
03:54 at his presence: when I consider. I am afraid of him.
03:57 For God maketh my heart soft, and the Almighty troubleth me:
04:01 Because I was not cut off before the darkness,
04:04 neither hath he covered the darkness from my face.
04:07 We're continuing with Job, chapter 24, and this is the
04:11 King James Version. Why, seeing times are not hidden from the
04:16 Almighty, do they that know him not see his days?
04:19 Some remove the landmarks; they violently take away flocks,
04:24 and feed thereof. They drive away the ass of the fatherless,
04:27 they take the widow's ox for a pledge. They turn the needy
04:30 out of the way: the poor of the earth hide themselves together.
04:34 Behold, as wild asses in the desert, go thy forth to their
04:39 work; rising betimes for a prey: the wilderness yieldeth food
04:44 for them and for their children. They reap every one his corn
04:48 in the field: and they gather the vintage of the wicked.
04:51 They cause the naked to lodge without clothing, that they have
04:55 no covering in the cold. They wet with the showers of the
04:59 mountains, and embrace the rock for want of a shelter.
05:02 They pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge
05:07 of the poor. They cause him to go naked without clothing,
05:10 and they take away the sheaf from the hungry;
05:12 which make oil within their walls, and tread their wine
05:14 presses, and suffer thirst. Men groan from out of the city,
05:19 and the soul of the wounded crieth out: yet God layeth not
05:23 folly to them. They are of those that rebel against the light;
05:28 they know not the ways thereof, nor abide in the paths thereof.
05:31 The murderer rising with the light killeth the poor and
05:35 needy, and in the night is as a thief. The eye also of the
05:41 adulterer waiteth for the twilight, saying, No eye shall
05:43 see me and disguiseth his face. In the dark they dig through
05:49 houses, which they had marked for themselves in the daytime:
05:52 they know not the light. For the morning is to them even as the
05:57 shadow of death: if one know them, they are in the terrors
06:01 of the shadow of death. He is swift as the waters;
06:04 their portion is cursed in the earth: he beholdeth not the way
06:08 of the vineyards. Drought and heat consume the snow waters:
06:13 so doth the grave those which have sinned.
06:17 The womb shall forget him; the worm shall feed sweetly on him;
06:22 he shall be no more remembered; and wickedness shall be broken
06:27 as a tree. He evil entreateth the barren that beareth not:
06:32 and doeth not good to the widow. He draweth also the mighty
06:36 with his power: he riseth up and no man is sure of his life.
06:39 though it be given him to be in safety, whereon he resteth;
06:43 yet his eyes are upon their ways. They are exalted for a
06:48 little while, but are gone and brought low;
06:51 they are taken out of the way as all other, and cut off
06:54 as the tops of the ears of corn. And if it be not so now,
06:59 who will make me a liar, and make my speech worth nothing?
07:04 Continuing with Job, chapter 25. This is the King James Version.
07:08 Then answered Bildad the Shuhite and said, Dominion and fear
07:15 are with him, he maketh peace in his high places.
07:17 Is there any number of his armies? and upon whom doth not
07:22 his light arise? How then can man be justified with God?
07:28 Or how can he be clean that is born of a woman?
07:31 Behold even to the moon, and it shineth not; yea, the stars
07:36 are not pure in his sight. How much less man, that is a worm?
07:40 and the son of man, which is a worm?
07:43 Job, chapter 26. But Job answered and said,
07:49 How hast thou helped him that is without power? how savest
07:53 thou the arm that hath no strength?
07:54 How has thou counseled him that that hath no wisdom?
07:58 and how hast thou plentifully declared the thing as it is?
08:02 To whom hast thou uttered words? and whose spirit came from thee?
08:06 Dead things are formed from under the waters,
08:09 and the inhabitants thereof. Hell is naked before him, and
08:13 destruction hath no covering. He stretcheth out the north
08:15 over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.
08:20 He bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds;
08:22 and the cloud is not rent under them. He holdeth back the face
08:27 of his throne, and spreadeth his cloud upon it.
08:29 He hath compassed the waters with bounds, until the day and
08:32 night come to an end. The pillars of heaven tremble
08:35 and are astonished at his reproof. He divideth the sea
08:40 with his power, and by his understanding he smiteth through
08:44 the proud. By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens;
08:47 his hand hath formed the crooked serpent. Lo, these are parts
08:52 of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him?
08:56 but the thunder of his power who can understand?
09:00 Continuing in chapter 27, the book of Job, and
09:05 this is the King James Version. Moreover Job continued
09:09 his parable, and said, As God liveth, who hath taken away my
09:15 judgment; and the Almighty, who hath vexed my soul;
09:18 All the while my breath is in me and the spirit of God is in my
09:22 nostrils; My lips shall not speak wickedness, nor my tongue
09:27 utter deceit. God forbid that I should justify you: till I die
09:33 I will not remove mine integrity from me. My righteousness
09:38 I hold fast and will not let it go: my heart shall not reproach
09:43 me so long as I live. Let mine enemy be as the wicked,
09:47 and he that riseth up against me as the unrighteous.
09:50 for what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he hath gained
09:54 when God taketh away his soul? Will God hear his cry when
09:58 trouble cometh upon him? Will he delight himself
10:01 in the Almighty? will he always call upon God? I will teach you
10:06 by the hand of God: that which is with the Almighty will I not
10:11 conceal. Behold, all ye yourselves have seen it;
10:16 why then are ye thus altogether vain?
10:18 This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage
10:23 of oppressors, which they shall receive of the Almighty.
10:26 If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword:
10:30 and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.
10:33 Those that remain of him shall be buried in death:
10:37 and his widows shall not weep. Though he heap up silver as the
10:42 dust, and prepare raiment as the clay; He may prepare it,
10:45 but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide
10:50 the silver. He buildeth his house as a moth,
10:54 and as a booth that the keeper maketh. The rich man shall
10:58 lie down, but he shall not be gathered: he openeth his eyes,
11:03 and he is not. Terrors take hold on him as the waters,
11:07 a tempest stealeth him away in the night. The east wind
11:10 carrieth him away, and he departeth: and as a storm
11:13 hurleth him out of his place. For God shall cast upon him,
11:17 and not spare: he would fain flee out of his hand.
11:21 Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of
11:25 his place. Continuing in the book of Job, chapter 28.
11:29 Surely there is a vein for the silver, and a place for gold
11:33 where they fine it. Iron is taken out of the earth,
11:36 and brass is molten out of the stone. He setteth an end to
11:40 darkness, and searcheth out all perfection: the stones of
11:44 darkness and the shadow of death. The flood breaketh out
11:48 from the inhabitant; even the waters forgotten of the foot:
11:51 they are dried up, they are gone away from men. As for the earth
11:55 out of it cometh bread: and under it is turned up
11:59 as it were fire. The stones of it are the place of sapphires:
12:04 and it hath dust of gold. There is a path which no fowl knoweth
12:10 and which the vulture's eye hath not seen:
12:12 The lion's whelps have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion
12:16 passed by it. He putteth forth his hand upon the rock;
12:20 he overturneth the mountains by the roots. He cutteth out
12:24 rivers among the rocks; and his eye seeth every precious thing.
12:30 He bindeth the floods from overflowing; and the thing that
12:34 is hid bringeth he forth to light. But where shall wisdom
12:40 be found? and where is the place of understanding?
12:43 Man knoweth not the price therof neither is it found in the land
12:48 of the living. The depth saith, It is not in me:
12:52 and the sea saith, It is not with me.
12:56 It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed
13:00 for the price thereof. It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir
13:05 with the precious onyx, or the sapphire.
13:07 The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it
13:12 shall not be for jewels of fine gold. No mention shall be made
13:16 of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above
13:19 rubies. The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it,
13:23 neither shall it be valued with pure gold.
13:25 Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of
13:30 understanding? Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living,
13:33 and kept close from the fowls of the air.
13:35 Destruction and death say, We have heard the fame thereof
13:38 with our ears. God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth
13:44 the place thereof. For he looketh to the ends of the earth
13:47 and seeth under the whole heaven to make the weight for the winds
13:51 and he weigheth the waters by measure. When he made a decree
13:55 for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder;
13:57 then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yea,
14:01 and searched it out. And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of
14:06 the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil
14:09 is understanding, Continuing in Job, chapter 29.
14:14 Moreover Job continued his parable, and said, O that I were
14:19 as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me;
14:23 When his candle shined upon my head, and when by his light
14:26 I walked through darkness; As I was in the days of my youth,
14:31 when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle;
14:34 Please join with me again to read the word of God next time.
14:38 Goodbye.
