00:15 Hello, and welcome back to His Words are Life.
00:17 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and today we are continuing the story of Job. 00:21 Let's pray together before we start. 00:24 Dear God, Please be with us now as we read these words, 00:29 to understand the lessons that you have for each one of us 00:33 in the reading today. Please send your Holy Spirit to open 00:37 our eyes and make these words go deep into our heart today. 00:41 Amen. We're in the middle of a dialog between Job and his three 00:48 friends who have come to comfort him in the loss of his family, 00:52 the loss of his wealth, his property and in his health. 00:57 Job is sitting there discussing with them. They're dialoging 01:02 back and forth on the question of suffering and pain. 01:04 God's hand in it? is it punishment? 01:07 We're picking up in Job, chapter 18, as they discuss 01:12 these questions and make their points back and forth. 01:14 Verse 1 of chapter 18, this is the King James Version. 01:18 Then answered Bildad the Shuhite and said, How long will it be 01:24 ever ye make an end of words? mark and afterwards 01:28 we will speak. Wherefore are we counted as beasts, and reputed 01:33 vile in your sight? He teareth himself in his anger: 01:37 shall the earth be forsaken for thee? and shall the rock be 01:40 removed out of his place? Yea the light of the wicked shall be 01:44 put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine. 01:47 The light shall be dark in his tabernacle, and his candle 01:50 shall be put out with him. The steps of his strength 01:54 shall be straitened, and his own counsel shall cast him down. 01:57 For he is cast into a net by his own feet, and he walketh upon a 02:02 snare. The gin shall take him by the heel, and the robber shall 02:06 prevail against him. The snare is laid for him in the ground, 02:10 and a trap for him in the way. Terrors shall make him afraid 02:13 on every side, and he shall drive him to his feet. 02:16 His strength shall be hunger bitten, and destruction 02:19 shall be ready at his side. It shall devour the strength of 02:23 his skin: even the firstborn of death shall devour his strength. 02:26 His confidence shall be rooted out of his tabernacle, 02:29 and it shall bring him to the king of terrors; 02:31 It shall dwell in his tabernacle because it is none of his: 02:35 brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation. 02:38 His roots shall be dried up beneath, and above shall his 02:42 branch be cut off. His remembrance shall perish 02:46 from the earth and he shall have no name in the street. 02:48 He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased 02:51 out of the world. He shall neither have son nor nephew 02:53 among his people, nor any remaining in his dwellings. 02:56 They that come after him shall be astonied at his day, 03:00 as they that went before were affrighted. 03:05 Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the 03:09 place of him that knoweth not God. 03:12 Continuing in Job, chapter 19. Then Job answered and said, 03:17 How long will ye vex my soul, and break me in pieces 03:21 with words? These ten times have ye reproached me: 03:24 ye are not ashamed that ye make yourselves strange to me. 03:27 And be it indeed that I have erred, mine error remaineth 03:31 with myself. If indeed ye will magnify yourselves against me, 03:35 and plead against me my reproach: Know now that 03:38 God has overthrown me, and hath compassed me with his net. 03:41 Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard: 03:45 I cry aloud, but there is no judgment. He hath fenced 03:50 up my way that I cannot pass, and he hath set darkness 03:53 in my paths. He hath stripped me of my glory, and taken the crown 03:57 from my head. He hath destroyed me on every side, and I am gone: 04:00 and mine hope hath he removed like a tree. 04:02 He hath also kindled his wrath against me, and he counteth 04:07 me unto him as one of his enemies. His troops come 04:10 together and raise up their way against me, and encamp 04:12 round about my tabernacle. He hath put my brethren far from me 04:17 and mine acquaintance are verily estranged from me. 04:21 My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends 04:25 have forgotten me. They that dwell in mine house, 04:29 and my maids, count me for a stranger: I am an alien 04:34 in their sight. I called my servant, and he gave me 04:37 no answer; I entreated him with my mouth. My breath is strange 04:43 to my wife, though I entreated for the children's sake of mine 04:47 own body. Yea, young children despised me; I arose, and they 04:51 spake against me. All my inward friends abhorred me. 04:55 and they whom I loved are turned against me. My bone cleaveth 05:00 to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin 05:04 of my teeth. Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, 05:09 O ye my friends; for the hand of God hath touched me. 05:13 Why do ye persecute me as God and are not satisfied 05:18 with my flesh? O that my words were now written! 05:21 O that they were printed in a book! 05:23 That they were graven with an iron pen and 05:26 lead in the rock forever! For I know that my redeemer liveth, 05:31 and he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: 05:36 And though after my skin, worms destroy this body, 05:40 Yet in my flesh shall I see God: Whom I shall see for myself, 05:47 and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; 05:49 though my reins be consumed within me. 05:52 But ye should say, Why persecute we him, seeing the root of the 05:57 matter is found in me? Be ye afraid of the sword: 06:01 for wrath bringeth the punishments of the sword, 06:03 that ye may know there is a judgment. 06:06 Continuing in Job, chapter 20, This is the King James Version. 06:11 Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said, 06:16 Therefore do my thoughts cause me to answer, 06:20 and for this I make haste. I have heard the check of my 06:24 reproach, and the spirit of my understanding causeth me 06:27 to answer. Knowest thou not this of old, 06:31 since man was placed upon earth, that the triumphing of 06:35 the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite 06:39 but for a moment? Though his excellency mount up to the 06:43 heavens, and his head reach the clouds; yet he shall perish 06:46 for ever like his own dung: they which have seen him 06:49 shall say, Where is he? He shall fly away as a dream, 06:53 and shall not be found: yea, he shall be chased away 06:56 as a vision of the night. The eye also which saw him shall see 07:00 him no more; neither shall his place any more behold him. 07:04 His children shall seek to please the poor, and his hands 07:08 shall restore their goods. His bones are full of the sin of his 07:11 youth, which shall lie down with him in the dust. 07:14 Though wickedness be sweet in his mouth, though he hide it 07:19 under his tongue; though he spare it and forsake it not; 07:22 but keep it still within his mouth: yet his meat in his 07:26 bowels is turned, it is the gall of asps within him. 07:31 He hath swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again 07:36 God shall cast them out of his belly. He shall suck the poison 07:40 of asps: the viper's tongue shall slay him. 07:42 He shall not see the rivers, the floods, the brooks of honey 07:45 and butter. That which he labored for shall he restore, 07:49 and shall not swallow it down: according to his substance 07:52 shall the restitution be, and he shall not rejoice therein. 07:56 Because he hath oppressed and hath forsaken the poor; 08:00 because he has violently taken away an house which he builded 08:03 not; surely he shall not feel quietness in his belly, 08:06 he shall not save of that which he desired. 08:10 There shall none of his meat be left; 08:12 therefore shall no man look for his goods. 08:15 In the fullness of his sufficiency he shall be 08:20 in straits: every hand of the wicked shall come upon him. 08:24 When he is about to fill his belly, God shall cast the fury 08:28 of his wrath upon him, and shall rain it upon him while he 08:31 is eating. He shall flee from the iron weapon, and the bow 08:35 of steel shall strike him through. 08:37 It is drawn, and cometh out of the body; yea, the glittering 08:41 sword cometh out of his gall: terrors are upon him. 08:45 All darkness shall be hid in his secret places: a fire not blown 08:50 shall consume him; it shall go ill with him that is left 08:53 in his tabernacle. The heaven shall reveal his iniquity; 08:57 and the earth shall rise up against him. 08:59 The increase of his house shall depart, 09:02 and his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath. 09:06 This is the portion of a wicked man from God, 09:11 and the heritage appointed unto him by God. 09:15 Continuing with Job, chapter 21, This is the King James Version. 09:21 But Job answered and said, Hear diligently my speech, 09:27 and let this be your consolations. 09:29 Suffer me that I may speak; and after that I have spoken, 09:32 mock on. As for me, is my complaint to man? 09:36 and if it were so, why should not my spirit be troubled? 09:39 Mark me, and be astonished, and lay your hand upon your 09:44 mouth. Even when I remember I am afraid, and trembling 09:47 taketh hold on my flesh. Wherefore do the wicked live, 09:51 become old, yea, are mighty in power? Their seed is established 09:56 in their sight with them, and their offspring before 09:58 their eyes. Their houses are save from fear, 10:01 neither is the rod of God upon them. Their bull gendereth, 10:05 and faileth not; their cow calveth, and casteth not her 10:08 calf. They send forth their little ones like a flock, 10:11 and their children dance. They take the timbrel and harp, 10:14 and rejoice at the sound of the organ. 10:16 They spend their days in wealth and in a moment go down to the 10:20 grave. Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; 10:24 for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways. 10:26 What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? 10:29 and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him? 10:33 Lo, their good is not in their hand: the counsel of the wicked 10:38 is far from me. How oft is the candle of the wicked put out! 10:43 and how oft cometh their destruction upon them! 10:45 God distributeth sorrows in his anger. They are as stubble 10:50 before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away. 10:53 God layeth up his iniquity for his children: 10:57 he rewardeth him, and he shall know it. His eyes shall see 11:01 his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the 11:04 Almighty. For what pleasure hath he in his house after him, 11:08 when the number of his months is cut off in the midst? 11:12 Shall any teach God knowledge? seeing he judgeth those that are 11:17 high. One dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease 11:22 and quiet. His breasts are full of milk, and his bones are 11:26 moistened with marrow. And another dieth in the bitterness 11:30 of his soul, and never eateth with pleasure. 11:33 They shall lie down alike in the dust, and the worms 11:36 shall cover them. Behold, I know your thoughts, 11:40 and the devices which ye wrongfully imagine against me. 11:43 For ye say, Where is the house of the prince? and where are the 11:47 dwelling places of the wicked? Have ye not asked them 11:51 that go by the way? and do ye not know their tokens, 11:53 that the wicked is reserved to the day of destruction? 11:57 they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath. 12:00 Who shall declare his way to his face? and who shall repay 12:05 him what he hath done? Yet shall he be brought to the grave, 12:09 and shall remain in the tomb. The clods of the valley 12:12 shall be sweet unto him, and every man shall draw after him, 12:15 as there are innumerable before him. How then comfort ye me 12:20 in vain, seeing in your answers there remaineth falsehood? 12:25 Continuing with Job, chapter 22. Then Eliphaz the Temanite 12:32 answered and said, Can a man be profitable unto God, 12:36 as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself? 12:40 Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art 12:44 righteous? or is it gain to him, that thou makest thy ways 12:47 perfect? Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? 12:51 will he enter with thee into judgment? 12:54 Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite? 12:59 For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought, 13:03 and stripped the naked of their clothing. Thou hast not given 13:05 water to the weary to drink, and thou hast witholden bread 13:08 from the hungry. But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; 13:11 and the honorable man dwelt in it. Thou has sent widows 13:15 away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken. 13:18 Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear 13:22 troubleth thee; Or darkness, that thou canst not see; 13:27 and abundance of waters cover thee. Is not God in the height 13:31 of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are! 13:34 And thou sayest, How doth God know? can he judge through the 13:39 dark cloud? Thick clouds are a covering to him, 13:42 that he seeth not and he walketh in the circuit of heaven. 13:45 Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have trodden? 13:49 which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown 13:52 with a flood: Which said unto God, Depart from us: 13:55 and what can the Almighty do for them? Yet he filled their houses 13:59 with good things: but the counsel of the wicked 14:02 is far from me. The righteous see it, and are glad: 14:05 and the innocent laugh them to scorn. Whereas our substance 14:08 is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire 14:11 consumeth. Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: 14:15 thereby good shall come unto thee. Receive, I pray thee, 14:20 the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart. 14:23 If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, 14:26 thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles. 14:29 Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir 14:34 as the stones of the brooks. Please join me again next time. 14:39 Goodbye. |
