00:16 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and thank you for joining with me today
00:21 to read the Word of God together Let's pray before we start
00:26 Dear God, thank you for this time right now to come and sit
00:31 quietly and listen to Your Word. Please still the noise of our
00:36 lives so that Your voice can be speaking to our hearts
00:40 the lesson that you have for us right here and right now.
00:44 Thank you so much for the life and the light that we will
00:47 receive. We love you so much and thank you for loving us. Amen
00:51 When we were last together, we were reading in the book of
00:55 Nehemiah, and the people have and have stood and listened
00:59 as the law of God was read. And they rejoiced and they
01:02 feasted with gladness, as they celebrated the hearing of the
01:06 Word of God together. Were going to pick up the account in
01:09 Nehemiah, chapter 8, verse 12, This is the King James Version.
01:13 And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink,
01:18 and to send portions, and to make great mirth, because they
01:22 had understood the words that were declared unto them.
01:25 And on the second day were gathered together the chief of
01:29 the fathers of all the people, the priests, and the Levites,
01:32 unto Ezra the scribe, even to understand the words of the law.
01:37 And they found written in the law which the Lord had commanded
01:40 by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths
01:44 in the feast of the seventh month:
01:47 And that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities,
01:51 and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forth unto the mount, and fetch
01:55 olive branches, and pine branches, and myrtle branches,
01:58 and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths,
02:03 as it is written. So the people went forth, and brought them,
02:07 and made themselves booths, every one upon the roof of his
02:11 house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of
02:14 God, and in the street of the water gate, and in the street of
02:18 the gate of Ephraim. And all the congregation of them that were
02:22 come again out of the captivity made booths, and sat under the
02:26 booths; for since the days of Jeshua the son of Nun unto that
02:31 day had not the children of Israel done so. And there was
02:35 very great gladness. Also day by day, from the first day unto the
02:40 last day, he read in the book of the law of God. And they kept
02:45 the feast seven days; and on the eighth day was a solemn assembly
02:50 according unto the manner. We're continuing now
02:54 in chapter 9 of Nehemiah, and this is the King James Version.
02:57 Now in the twenty and fourth day of this month the children of
03:02 Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackclothes
03:06 and earth upon them. And the seed of Israel separated
03:10 themselves from all strangers, and stood and confessed their
03:15 sins and the iniquities of their fathers. And they stood up in
03:19 their place, and read in the book of the law of the Lord God
03:23 one fourth part of the day; and another fourth part they
03:28 confessed, and worshipped the Lord their God.
03:31 Then stood up upon the stairs, of the Levites, Jeshua and Bani,
03:37 Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani,
03:44 and cried with a loud voice unto the Lord their God.
03:48 Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah,
03:54 Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said,
03:59 Stand up and bless the Lord your God for ever and ever:
04:04 and blessed be thy glorious name, which is exalted above all
04:08 blessing and praise. Thou, even thou, art Lord alone;
04:14 thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all
04:18 their host, the earth, and all things that are therein,
04:22 the seas, and all that is therein and thou preservest them
04:26 all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.
04:28 Thou art the Lord the God, who didst choose Abram,
04:33 and broughtest him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees,
04:35 and gavest him the name of Abraham;
04:37 And foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest
04:42 a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites,
04:44 the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the
04:48 Jebusites, and the Girgashites, to give it, I say, to his seed,
04:52 and hast performed thy words; for thou art righteous:
04:56 And didst see the affliction of our fathers in Egypt,
05:00 and heardest their cry by the Red Sea; and shewedst signs
05:05 and wonders upon Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the
05:09 people of his land: for thou knewest that they dealt proudly
05:13 against them. So didst thou get thee a name, as it is this day.
05:18 And thou didst divide the sea before them, so that they went
05:22 through the midst of the sea on the dry land;
05:24 and their persecutors thou threwest into the deeps,
05:28 as a stone into the mighty waters. Moreover thou leddest
05:33 them in the day by a cloudy pillar; and in the night by a
05:37 pillar of fire, to give them light in the way wherein they
05:40 should go. Thou camest down also upon mount Sinai,
05:44 and spakest with them from heaven, and gavest them
05:46 right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commandments:
05:51 and madest known unto them thy holy sabbath, and commandedst
05:56 them precepts, statutes, and laws, by the hand of Moses thy
06:00 servant: and gavest them bread from heaven for their hunger,
06:04 and broughtest forth water for them out of the rock for their
06:07 thirst, and promisedst them that they should go in to possess the
06:11 land which thou hadst sworn to give them. But they and our
06:15 fathers dealt proudly, and hardened their necks,
06:18 and hearkened not to thy commandments,
06:22 and refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders
06:26 that thou didst among them; but hardened their necks,
06:29 and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their
06:35 bondage: but thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and
06:40 merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness, and forsookest
06:45 them not. Yea, when they had made them a molten calf,
06:49 and said, This is thy God that brought thee up out of Egypt,
06:52 and had wrought great provocations;
06:53 Yet thou in thy manifold mercies forsookest them not in the
06:58 wilderness; the pillar of the cloud departed not from them
07:02 by day, to lead them in the way neither the pillar of fire
07:05 by night, to show them light, and the way wherein they should
07:08 go. Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them,
07:13 and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest
07:18 them water for their thirst. Yea forty years didst thou sustain
07:23 them in the wilderness, so that they lacked nothing;
07:27 their clothes waxed not old, and their feet swelled not.
07:32 Moreover thou gavest them kingdoms and nations,
07:36 and didst divide them into corners: so they possessed the
07:40 land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon,
07:43 and the land of Og king of Bashan. Their children also
07:47 multipliedst thou as the stars of heaven, and broughtest them
07:50 into the land, concerning which thou hadst promised to their
07:53 fathers, that they should go in to possess it.
07:56 So the children went in and possessed the land, and thou
08:01 subduedst before them the inhabitants of the land,
08:03 the Caananites, and gavest them into their hands,
08:06 with their kings, and the people of the land, that they might
08:09 do with them as they would. And they took strong cities,
08:12 and a fat land, and possessed houses full of all goods,
08:16 wells digged, vineyards, and oliveyards, and fruit trees
08:20 in abundance: so they did eat, and were filled, and became fat,
08:24 and delighted themselves in thy great goodness. Nevertheless
08:30 they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee,
08:34 and cast thy law behind their backs, and slew thy prophets
08:39 which testified against them to turn them to thee,
08:42 and they wrought great provocations.
08:46 Therefore thou deliveredst them into the hand of their enemies,
08:50 who vexed them: and in the time of their trouble, when they
08:55 cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven;
08:58 and according to thy manifold mercies thou gavest them saviors
09:04 who saved them out of the hand of their enemies. But after they
09:08 had rest, they did evil again before thee: therefore leftest
09:14 thou them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the
09:18 dominion over them: yet when they returned, and cried unto
09:22 thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and many times didst
09:27 thou deliver them according to thy mercies; and testifiedst
09:31 against them, that thou mightest bring them again unto thy law:
09:36 yet they dealt proudly, and hearkened not unto thy
09:39 commandments, but sinned against thy judgments, which if a man do
09:45 he shall live in them; and withdrew the shoulder,
09:48 and hardened their neck, and would not hear. Yet many years
09:52 didst thou forbear them, and testifiedst against them by thy
09:56 spirit in thy prophets: yet would they not give ear:
09:59 therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the people of the
10:03 lands. Nevertheless for thy great mercies' sake thou didst
10:10 not utterly consume them, nor forsake them:
10:12 for thou art a gracious and merciful God. Now therefore,
10:18 our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God,
10:22 who keepeth covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem
10:28 little before thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings,
10:31 on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets,
10:34 and on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of
10:38 the kings of Assyria unto this day. Howbeit thou art just
10:44 in all that is brought upon us; for thou hast done right,
10:47 but we have done wickedly: Neither have our kings,
10:51 our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept thy law,
10:54 nor hearkened unto thy commandments and thy testimonies
10:56 wherewith thou didst testify against them.
10:59 For they have not served thee in their kingdom, and in thy
11:04 great goodness that thou gavest them, and in the large and fat
11:07 land which thou gavest before them, neither turned away from
11:11 their wicked works. Behold, we are servants this day,
11:16 and for the land that thou gavest unto our fathers to eat
11:20 the fruit thereof and the good thereof, behold, we are servants
11:24 in it: and it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom
11:28 thou hast set over us because of our sins: also they have
11:32 dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their
11:35 pleasure, and we are in great distress. And because of all
11:39 this we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes,
11:44 Levites, and priests, seal unto it. We're going to continue to
11:50 read in Nehemiah. In the first part of chapter 10
11:53 is a listing of the names of those who sealed the covenant.
11:56 So we'll skip over the reading of that listing, and we'll pick
11:59 up in Nehemiah 10, starting with verse 28.
12:02 And this is the King James Version.
12:03 And the rest of the people, the priests, the Levites,
12:08 the porters, the singers, the Nethinims, and all they that had
12:12 separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the law
12:15 of God, their wives, their sons and their daughters, every one
12:19 having knowledge, and having understanding; they clave to
12:23 their brethren, their nobles, and entered into a curse,
12:26 and into an oath, to walk in God's law, which was given
12:30 by Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all the
12:35 commandments of the Lord our Lord, and his judgments
12:38 and his statutes; And that we would not give our daughters
12:41 unto the people of the land, nor take their daughters for our
12:45 sons: And if the people of the land bring ware or any victuals
12:50 on the sabbath day to sell, that we would not buy it of them
12:53 on the sabbath, or on the holy day: and that we would leave the
12:57 seventh year, and the exaction of every debt. Also we made
13:03 ordinances for us, to charge ourselves yearly with the third
13:06 part of a shekel for the service of the house of our God;
13:09 for the shewbread, and for the continual meat offering, and for
13:12 the continual burnt offering, of the sabbaths, of the new
13:16 moons, for the set feasts, and for the holy things, and for the
13:20 sin offerings to make an atonement for Israel,
13:22 and for all the work of the house of our God.
13:26 And we cast the lots among the priests, the Levites, and the
13:30 people for the wood offering, to bring it into the house of our
13:33 God, after the houses of our fathers, at times appointed
13:37 year by year, to burn upon the altar of the Lord our God,
13:40 as it is written in the law: and to bring the firstfruits of our
13:45 ground, and the firstfruits of all fruit of all trees,
13:48 year by year unto the house of the Lord: also the firstborn of
13:51 our sons, and of our cattle, as it is written in the law,
13:54 and the firstlings of our herds and of our flocks, to bring
13:58 to the house of our God, unto the priests that minister in the
14:02 house of our God: and that we should bring the firstfruits
14:05 of our dough, and our offerings and the fruit of all manner of
14:08 trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers
14:12 of the house of our God; and the tithes of our ground unto the
14:16 Levites that the same Levites might have the tithes in all the
14:20 cities of our tillage. And the priest the son of Aaron shall
14:24 be with the Levites, when the Levites take tithes:
14:26 and the Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes unto the
14:31 house of our God, to the chambers, into the treasure
14:34 house. - Please join with me again next time to read the
14:37 word of God together. Goodbye.
