00:16 Hello, and welcome back to His Words are Life.
00:19 I'm Kelly Mowrer and today we're going to continue reading 00:22 in 2nd Chronicles. Let's pray together before we start. 00:25 Dear God, thank you so much for the account that we will read 00:29 today; and for the lessons that your Holy Spirit will bring 00:33 to each of our hearts. Please may these words go deep and be 00:39 rooted to bear fruit to your glory. Thank you so much for 00:42 loving us. Amen. We're reading the account of king Jotham 00:48 in 2nd Chronicles, chapter 27, beginning with verse 6 00:51 and this is the King James Version. 00:52 So Jotham became mighty because he prepared his way before the 00:59 Lord his God. Now the rest of the acts of Jotham and all his 01:03 wars and his ways, lo, they are written in the book of the kings 01:06 of Israel and Judah. He was five and twenty years old when he 01:10 began to reign and reigned 16 years in Jerusalem. 01:13 And Jotham slept with his fathers and they buried him 01:16 in the city of David. And Ahaz his son reigned in his stead. 01:21 We'll continue now in 2nd Chronicles, chapter 28. 01:25 This is the King James Version. 01:26 Ahaz was 20 years old when he began to reign and he reigned 01:31 16 years in Jerusalem: but he did not that which was right 01:36 in the sight of the Lord, like David his father: for he walked 01:39 in the ways of the kings of Israel, and made also molten 01:42 images for Baalim. Moreover he burnt incense in the valley 01:47 of the son of Hinnom, and burnt his children in the fire, 01:51 after the abominations of the heathen whom the Lord had cast 01:55 out before the children of Israel. He sacrificed also and 01:59 burnt incense in the high places and on the hills and under every 02:03 green tree. Wherefore the Lord his God delivered him into the 02:08 hand of the king of Syria; and they smote him, and carried 02:11 away a great multitude of them captives, and brought them to 02:13 Damascus. And he was also delivered into the hand of 02:17 the king of Israel, who smote him with a great slaughter. 02:20 For Pekah the son of Remaliah slew in Judah an hundred and 02:25 twenty thousand in one day, which were all valiant men; 02:28 because they had forsaken the Lord God of their fathers. 02:31 And Zichri, a mighty man of Ephraim, slew Maaseiah 02:36 the kings son, and Azrikam the governor of the house, 02:40 and Elkanah that was next to the king. And the children of Israel 02:44 carried away captive of their brethren 200,000 women, sons, 02:48 and daughters and took also away much spoil from them and brought 02:53 the spoil to Samaria. But a prophet of the Lord was there, 02:58 whose name was Oded: and he went out before the host that 03:02 came to Samaria, and said unto them, Behold, because the Lord 03:06 God of your fathers was wroth with Judah, he hath delivered 03:10 them into your hand, and ye have slain them in a rage 03:13 that reacheth up into heaven. And now ye purpose to keep under 03:19 the children of Judah and Jerusalem for bondmen and 03:21 bondwomen unto you: but are there not with you, even with 03:27 you, sins against the Lord your God? Now hear me therefore, 03:31 and deliver the captives again, which ye have taken captive 03:35 of your brethren: for the fierce wrath of the Lord is upon you. 03:38 Then certain of the heads of the children of Ephraim, Azariah the 03:44 son of Johanan, Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth, 03:48 and Jehizkiah the son of Shallum and Amasa the son of Hadlai, 03:54 stood up against them that came from the war, and said unto them 03:57 Ye shall not bring in the captives hither: for whereas 04:00 we have offended against the Lord already, ye intend to add 04:04 more to our sins and to our trespass: for our trespass is 04:06 great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel. So the armed men 04:11 left the captives and the spoil before the princes 04:13 and all the congregation. And the men which were expressed 04:16 by name rose up, and took the captives, and with the spoil 04:20 clothed all that were naked among them, and arrayed them, 04:24 and shod them, and gave them to eat and to drink, 04:26 and anointed them, and carried all the feeble of them 04:30 upon asses, and brought them to Jericho, the city of palm trees, 04:34 to their brethren: then they returned to Samaria. 04:37 At that time did king Ahaz send unto the kings of Assyria 04:42 to help him. For again the Edomites had come and smitten 04:46 Judah and carried away captives. The Philistines also had invaded 04:49 the cities of the low country, and of the south of Judah, 04:52 and had taken Bethshemesh, and Ajalon, and Gederoth, 04:57 and Shocho with the villages thereof, and Timnah with the 05:01 villages thereof, Gimzo also and the villages thereof: 05:04 and they dwelt there. For the Lord brought Judah low 05:08 because of Ahaz king of Israel for he made Judah naked, 05:12 and transgressed sore against the Lord. 05:15 And Tilgathpilneser king of Assyria came unto him, and 05:21 distressed him, but strengthened him not. For Ahaz took away a 05:26 portion out of the house of the Lord, and out of the house of 05:29 the king and of the princes, and gave it unto the king of Assyria 05:33 but he helped him not. And in the time of his distress did he 05:38 trespass yet once more against the Lord: this is that king Ahaz 05:42 for he sacrificed unto the gods of Damascus, which smote him: 05:46 and he said, Because the gods of the kings of Syria help them, 05:50 therefore will I sacrifice to them, that they may help me. 05:53 But they were the ruin of him, and of all Israel. And Ahaz 05:59 gathered together the vessels of the house of God, and cut in 06:04 pieces the vessels of the vessels of the house of God, 06:06 and shut up the doors of the house of the Lord, 06:10 and he made him altars in every corner of Jerusalem. 06:13 And in every several city of Judah he made high places 06:19 to burn incense unto other Gods, and provoked to anger the Lord 06:25 God of his fathers. Now the rest of his acts and of all his 06:29 ways, first and last, behold, they are written in the book 06:33 of the kings of Judah and Israel. And Ahaz slept with his 06:38 fathers, and they buried him in the city, even in Jerusalem: 06:41 but they brought him not into the sepulchers of the kings 06:43 of Israel: and Hezekiah his son reigned in his stead. 06:48 We're continuing with 2nd Chronicles, chapter 29, 06:51 and this is the King James Version. 06:53 Hezekiah began to reign when he was five and twenty years old, 06:58 and he reigned nine and twenty years in Jerusalem. 07:00 And his mother's name was Abijah the daughter of Zechariah. 07:04 And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, 07:08 according to all that David his father had done. 07:10 He, in the first year of his reign, in the first month, 07:14 opened the doors of the house of the Lord, and repaired them. 07:17 And he brought in the priests and the Levites, and gathered 07:20 them together into the east street, and said unto them, 07:23 Hear me, ye Levites, sanctify now yourselves, and sanctify 07:27 the house of the Lord God of your fathers, and carry forth 07:29 the filthiness out of the holy place. For our fathers have 07:33 trespassed and done that which was evil in the eyes of the Lord 07:36 our God, and have forsaken him, and have turned away their faces 07:40 from the habitation of the Lord, and turned their backs. 07:42 Also they have shut up the doors of the porch, and put out the 07:45 lamps, and have not burned incense nor offered burnt 07:47 offering in the holy place unto the God of Israel. 07:50 Wherefore the wrath of the Lord was upon Judah and Jerusalem, 07:53 and he hath delivered them to trouble, to astonishment, and to 07:57 hissing, as ye see with your eyes. For, lo, our fathers have 08:00 fallen by the sword, and our sons and our daughters and our 08:03 wives are in captivity for this. Now it is in mine heart to make 08:08 a covenant with the Lord God of Israel, that his wrath 08:10 may turn away from us. My sons, be not now negligent: 08:16 for the Lord hath chosen you to stand before him, to serve him, 08:20 and that ye should minister unto him, and burn incense. 08:23 Then the Levites arose, Mahath the son of Amasai, and Joel 08:29 the son of Azariah, of the sons of the Kohathites: and of the 08:33 sons of Merari, Kish the son of Abdi, and Azariah the son of 08:37 Jehalelel: and of the Gershonites; Joah the son of 08:41 Zimmah, and Eden the son of Joah: And of the sons of 08:46 Elizaphan; Shimri, and Jeiel: and of the sons of Asaph; 08:50 Zechariah, and Mattaniah: and of the sons of Heman: Jehiel, 08:55 and Shimei: and of the sons of Jeduthun; Shemaiah, and Uzziel. 09:00 And they gathered their brethren and sanctified themselves, 09:04 and came, according to the commandment of the king, 09:07 by the words of the Lord, to cleanse the house of the Lord. 09:10 And the priests went into the inner part of the house of the 09:14 Lord, to cleanse it, and brought out all the uncleanness 09:18 that they found in the temple of the Lord into the court of the 09:21 house of the Lord. And the Levites took it, to carry it out 09:25 abroad into the brook Kidron. Now they began on the first day 09:30 of the first month to sanctify, and on the 8th day of the month 09:35 came they to the porch of the Lord: so they sanctified 09:38 the house of the Lord in 8 days; and in the sixteenth day of the 09:43 first month they made an end. Then they went in to Hezekiah 09:46 the king, and said, We have cleansed all the house of the 09:50 Lord, and the altar of burnt offering, with all the vessels 09:53 thereof, and the shewbread table with all the vessels thereof. 09:56 Moreover all the vessels, which king Ahaz in his riegn did cast 10:01 away in his transgression, have we prepared and sanctified, and, 10:05 behold, they are before the altar of the Lord. 10:08 Then Hezekiah the king rose early, and gathered the rulers 10:13 of the city and went up to the house of the Lord. 10:16 And they brought 7 bullocks, and 7 rams, and 7 lambs, and 7 he 10:23 goats for a sin offering for the kingdom, and for the sanctuary 10:26 and for Judah. And he commanded the priests the sons of Aaron 10:30 to offer them on the altar of the Lord. So they killed the 10:34 bullocks and the priests received the blood, 10:37 and sprinkled it on the altar: likewise, when they had killed 10:40 the rams, they sprinkled the blood upon the altar: 10:42 they killed also the lambs, and the sprinkled the blood 10:45 upon the altar. And they brought forth the he goats for the sin 10:50 offering before the king and the congregation; and they laid 10:54 their hands upon them. And the priests killed them, 10:57 and they made reconciliation with their blood upon the altar, 11:01 to make an atonement for all Israel: for the king commanded 11:05 that the burnt offering and the sin offering should be made 11:08 for all Israel. And he set the Levites in the house of the Lord 11:13 with cymbals, with psalteries, and with harps, according to the 11:17 commandment of David and of Gad the king's seer, and Nathan 11:20 the prophet: for so was the commandment of the Lord by his 11:24 prophets. And the Levites stood with the instruments of David, 11:28 and the priests with the trumpets. 11:30 And Hezekiah commanded to offer the burnt offering 11:33 upon the altar. And when the burnt offering began, 11:35 the song of the Lord began also with the trumpets, and with the 11:40 instruments ordained by David king of Israel. 11:43 And all the congregation worshipped, and the singers 11:47 sang, and the trumpeters sounded and all this continued until the 11:51 burnt offering was finished. And when they had made an end of 11:55 offering, the king and all that were present with him 11:58 bowed themselves and worshipped, Moreover Hezekiah the king, 12:04 and the princes commanded the Levites to sing praise unto the 12:08 Lord, with the words of David, and of Asaph the seer. 12:11 And they sang praises with gladness, and they bowed their 12:16 heads and worshipped. Then Hezekiah answered and said, 12:20 Now ye have consecrated yourselves unto the Lord, 12:23 come near and bring sacrifices and thank offerings into the 12:27 house of the Lord. And the congregation brought in 12:31 sacrifices and thank offerings and as many as were of a free 12:35 heart burnt offerings. And the number of the burnt offerings, 12:39 which the congregation brought, was threescore and ten bullocks, 12:43 an hundred rams, and 200 lambs: all these were for a burnt 12:48 offering to the Lord, and the consecrated things were 600 oxen 12:52 and 3,000 sheep. But the priests were too few, so that they could 12:58 not flay all the burnt offerings: wherefore their 13:00 brethren, the Levites did help them, till the work was ended, 13:03 and until the other priests had sanctified themselves: 13:06 for the Levites were more upright in heart to sanctify 13:10 themselves than the priests. And also the burnt offerings 13:14 were in abundance, with the fat of the peace offerings, and the 13:17 drink offerings for every burnt offering. So the service of the 13:21 house of the Lord was set in order. And Hezekiah rejoiced, 13:26 and all the people, that God had prepared the people: 13:28 for the thing was done suddenly. - Continuing in 2nd Chronicles, 13:32 chapter 30. This is the King James Version. 13:35 And Hezekiah sent to all Israel and Judah, and wrote letters 13:38 also to Ephraim and Manasseh, that they should come to the 13:42 house of the Lord at Jerusalem, to keep the passover 13:45 unto the Lord God of Israel. For the king had taken counsel, 13:48 and his princes, and all the congregation in Jerusalem, 13:51 to keep the passover in the 2nd month. For they could not 13:56 keep it at that time, because the priests had not sanctified 13:59 themselves sufficiently, neither had the people gathered 14:02 themselves together to Jerusalem. And the thing pleased 14:05 the king and all the congregation. 14:07 So they established a decree to make proclamation throughout 14:10 all Israel, from Beersheba even to Dan, that they should come 14:15 to keep the passover unto the Lord God of Israel at Jerusalem: 14:18 for they had not done it of a long time in such sort as it was 14:23 written. So the posts went with the letters from the king 14:26 and the princes throughout all Israel and Judah, and according 14:29 to the commandment of the king, saying, Ye children of Israel, 14:32 turn again unto the Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, 14:35 and he will return to the remnant of you, 14:38 that are escaped out of the hands of the kings of Assyria. |
