00:15 Hello and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:17 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and today we're going to read
00:19 some of the stories of the reign of king Solomon.
00:22 Before we start, let's pray together.
00:24 Dear God, you have told us that your word will be to us
00:30 wisdom and understanding to show us a firm path to walk on
00:34 and guide our steps. Please send your Holy Spirit now,
00:38 to be with us as we read of Solomon, the wisest man who ever
00:42 lived. Teach us what you would have each of us to know
00:45 from this story today. Thank you so much for loving us.
00:48 We love you. Amen. When we were last together,
00:52 The Lord has just appeared to Solomon, and Solomon has just
00:56 succeeded his father, David, as king. He is young and tender,
00:59 as the Bible says. And God appears to Solomon and he says,
01:02 Ask what I shall give thee. We're going to pick up with
01:06 Solomon's answer now, starting in the second book
01:08 of the Chronicles, chapter 1, verse 8. And this is the
01:12 King James Version. And Solomon said unto God,
01:15 Thou hast shewed great mercy unto David my father, and hast
01:20 made me to reign in his stead. Now, O Lord God, let thy promise
01:25 unto David my father be established:
01:28 for thou hast made me king over a people like the dust of the
01:32 earth in multitude. Give me now wisdom and Knowledge,
01:35 that I may go out and come in before this people: for who
01:40 can judge this thy people that is so great?
01:43 And God said to Solomon,
01:46 Because this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches,
01:51 wealth, or honor, nor the life of thine enemies, neither yet
01:56 hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge
02:01 for thyself, that thou mayest judge my people, over whom I
02:04 have made thee king: Wisdom and knowledge is granted unto thee;
02:09 and I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honor, such as none
02:14 of the kings have had that have been before thee, neither shall
02:19 there any after thee have the like. Then Solomon came from
02:24 his journey to the high place that was at Gibeon to Jerusalem,
02:28 from before the tabernacle of the congregation, and reigned
02:32 over Israel. And Solomon gathered chariots and horsemen:
02:35 and he had a thousand and four hundred chariots, and 12,000
02:39 horsemen, which he placed in the chariot cities, and with the
02:42 king at Jerusalem. And the king made silver and gold
02:45 at Jerusalem as plenteous as stones, and cedar trees made he
02:49 as the sycamore trees that are in the vale for abundance.
02:52 And Solomon had horses brought out of Egypt, and linen yarn:
02:56 the king's merchants received linen yarn at a price.
02:59 And they fetched up, and brought forth out of Egypt
03:02 a chariot for 600 shekels of silver, and an horse for an
03:05 hundred and fifty: and so brought they out horses for all
03:09 of the kings of the Hittites, and for the kings of Syria,
03:12 by their means. Continuing now with second
03:15 Chronicles, chapter 2, and this is the King James Version.
03:18 And Solomon determined to build an house for the name
03:23 of the Lord, and an house for his kingdom. And Solomon told
03:25 out threescore and ten thousand men to bear burdens,
03:29 and fourscore thousand to hew in the mountain, and
03:31 three thousand and six hundred to oversee them.
03:34 And Solomon sent to Huram the king of Tyre, saying, As thou
03:39 didst deal with David my father, and didst send him cedars to
03:43 build him an house to dwell therein, even so deal with me.
03:47 Behold, I build an house to the name of the Lord my God,
03:51 to dedicate it to him, and to burn before him sweet incense,
03:53 and for the continual shewbread, and for the burnt offerings
03:57 morning and evening, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons,
04:00 and on the solemn feasts of the Lord our God.
04:02 This is an ordinance for ever to Israel. And the house which I
04:07 build is great: for great is our God above all gods.
04:11 But who is able to build him an house, seeing the heaven and the
04:16 heaven of heavens cannot contain him? who am I then,
04:20 that I should build him an house save only to burn sacrifice
04:24 before him? Send me now therefore a man, cunning to
04:29 work in gold and in silver, and in brass, and in iron, and in
04:33 purple, in crimson, and blue, and that can skill to grave
04:38 with the cunning men that are with me in Judah and in
04:40 Jerusalem, whom David my father did provide. Send me also cedar
04:44 trees, fir trees, and algum trees, out of Lebanon:
04:47 for I know that thy servants can skill to cut timber
04:50 in Lebanon; and behold, my servants shall be with thy
04:53 servants, even to prepare me timber in abundance:
04:55 for the house which I am about to build shall be wonderful
04:59 great. And, behold, I will give to thy servants, the hewers
05:03 that cut timber, 20,000 measures of beaten wheat, and 20,000
05:08 measures of barley, and 20,000 baths of wine, and 20,000 baths
05:12 of oil. Then Huram the king of Tyre answered in writing,
05:17 which he sent to Solomon, Because the Lord hath loved
05:21 his people, he hath made thee king over them. Huram said
05:25 moreover, Blest be the Lord God of Israel, that made heaven and
05:29 earth, who hath given to David the king a wise son, endued with
05:34 prudence and understanding, that might build an house
05:37 for the Lord, and an house for his kingdom. And now I have sent
05:41 a cunning man, endued with understanding, of Huram
05:44 my father's, the son of a woman of the daughters of Dan,
05:48 and his father was a man of Tyre skilful to work in gold, and in
05:52 silver, in brass, in iron, in stone, and in timber, in purple,
05:58 in blue and in fine linen, and in crimson; also to grave any
06:03 manner of graving, and to find out every device which shall be
06:07 put to him, with thy cunning men and with the cunning men of my
06:10 lord David thy father. Now therefore the wheat, and the
06:15 barley, the oil, and the wine, which my lord hath spoken of,
06:18 let him send unto his servants: And we will cut wood out of
06:23 Lebanon, as much as thou shalt need: and we will bring it
06:27 to thee in floats by sea to Joppa; and thou shalt carry it
06:30 up to Jerusalem. And Solomon numbered all the strangers that
06:35 were in the land of Israel, after the numbering wherewith
06:37 David his father had numbered them; and they were found
06:40 an hundred and fifty thousand and three thousand
06:42 and six hundred. And he set threescore and ten thousand
06:46 of them to be bearers of burdens and fourscore thousand to be
06:50 hewers in the mountain, and three thousand and six hundred
06:53 overseers to set the people awork.
06:56 Continuing now in 2nd Chronicles chapter three. And this is the
07:01 King James Version. Then Solomon began to build
07:05 the house of the Lord at Jerusalem in mount Moriah,
07:08 where the Lord appeared unto David his father, in the place
07:11 that David had prepared in the threshingfloor of Ornan the
07:14 Jebusite. And he began to build in the second day of the second
07:18 month, in the fourth year of his reign. Now these are the things
07:23 wherein Solomon was instructed for the building of the house of
07:26 God. The length by cubits after the first measure was threescore
07:30 and the breadth twenty cubits. And the porch that was in the
07:34 front of the house, the length of it was according to the
07:36 breadth of the house, 20 cubits, and the height was an hundred
07:40 and twenty: and he overlaid it within with pure gold.
07:44 And the greater house he ceiled with fir tree, which he overlaid
07:49 with fine gold, and set thereon palm trees and chains.
07:52 And he garnished the house with precious stones for beauty:
07:56 and the gold was gold of Parvaim.
07:59 He overlaid also the house, the beams, the posts,
08:04 and the walls thereof, and the doors thereof, with gold;
08:06 and graved cherubims on the walls. And he made the most
08:11 holy house, the length whereof was according to the breadth of
08:15 the house, 20 cubits, and the breadth thereof 20 cubits.
08:19 and he overlaid it with fine gold, amounting to 600 talents.
08:23 And the weight of the nails was 50 shekels of gold.
08:27 And he overlaid the upper chambers with gold.
08:30 And in the most holy house he made 2 cherubims of image work,
08:34 and overlaid them with gold. And the wings of the cherubims were
08:39 20 cubits long: one wing of the one cherub was 5 cubits,
08:43 reaching to the wall of the house: and the other wing was
08:45 likewise 5 cubits, reaching to the wing of the other cherub.
08:49 And one wing of the other cherub was 5 cubits, reaching to the
08:52 wall of the house: and the other wing was 5 cubits also,
08:56 Joining to the wing of the other cherub. The wings of these
09:00 cherubim spread themselves forth 20 cubits: and they stood on
09:04 their feet, and their faces were inward. And he made the veil
09:09 of blue, and purple, and crimson and fine linen, and wrought
09:14 cherubims thereon. Also he made before the house 2 pillars of
09:19 thirty and five cubits high, and the chapiter that was on the top
09:23 of each of them was 5 cubits. And he made chains, as in the
09:27 oracle, and put them on the heads of the pillars;
09:29 and made an hundred pomegranates,
09:31 and put them on the chains. And he reared up the pillars
09:35 before the temple, one on the right hand,
09:37 and the other on the left; and called the name of that on the
09:41 right hand Jachin, and the name of that on the left Boaz.
09:45 Continuing to read in 2nd Chronicles, chapter 4,
09:49 This is the King James Version. Moreover he made an altar of
09:54 brass, 20 cubits the length thereof, and 20 cubits
09:57 the breadth thereof, and 10 cubits the height thereof.
10:00 Also he made a molten sea of 10 cubits from brim to brim,
10:04 round in compass, and 5 cubits the height thereof;
10:07 and a line of 30 cubits did compass it round about.
10:10 And under it was the similitude of oxen, which did compass it
10:15 round about. 10 in a cubit, compassing the sea round about.
10:18 Two rows of oxen were cast, when it was cast.
10:21 It stood upon 12 oxen, 3 looking toward the north and
10:26 3 looking toward the west, and 3 looking toward the south,
10:29 and three looking toward the east: and the sea was set above
10:33 upon them, and all their hinder parts were inward.
10:37 And the thickness of it was an handbreadth, and the brim of it
10:41 like the work of the brim of a cup, with flowers of lilies;
10:45 and it received and held 3,000 baths. He made also 10 lavers,
10:51 and put 5 on the right hand, and 5 on the left, to wash in them:
10:54 such things as they offered for the burnt offering they
10:58 washed in them; but the sea was for the priests to wash in.
11:01 And he made 10 candlesticks of gold according to their form,
11:05 and set them in the temple, 5 on the right hand,
11:07 and 5 on the left. He made also 10 tables, and placed them in
11:13 the temple, 5 on the right side, and 5 on the left. And he made
11:18 an hundred basins of gold. Furthermore he made the court
11:22 of the priests, and the great court, and doors for the court,
11:25 and overlaid the doors of them with brass. And he set the sea
11:30 on the right side of the east end, over against the south.
11:33 And Huram made the pots, and the shovels, and the basins.
11:37 Huram finished the work that he was to make for king Solomon
11:40 for the house of God; To wit, the 2 pillars, and the pommels,
11:44 and the chapiters which were on the top of the two pillars,
11:47 and the two wreaths to cover the two pommels of the chapiters
11:50 which were on the top of the pillars; and 400 pomegranates
11:55 on the two wreaths; two rows of pomegranates on each wreath,
11:59 to cover the 2 pommels of the chapiters which were upon the
12:02 pillars. He made also bases, and lavers made he upon the bases;
12:06 1 sea, and 12 oxen under it. The pots also, and the shovels,
12:11 and the fleshhooks, and all their instruments, did Huram
12:13 his father make to king Solomon for the house of the Lord
12:16 of bright brass. In the plain of Jordan did the king cast them,
12:21 in the clay ground between Succoth and Zeradathah.
12:25 Thus Solomon made all these vessels in great abundance:
12:29 for the weight of the brass could not be found out.
12:31 And Solomon made all the vessels that were for the house of God,
12:36 the golden altar also, and the tables whereon the shewbread
12:40 was set; Moreover the candle sticks with their lamps,
12:43 that they should burn after the manner before the oracle
12:47 of pure bold; and the flowers, and the lamps, and the tongs,
12:51 made he of gold, and that perfect gold; and the snuffers,
12:56 and the basins, and the spoons, and the censers, of pure gold:
12:59 and the entry of the house, the inner doors thereof for the
13:02 most holy place, and the doors of the house of the temple,
13:05 were of gold. Continuing now in 2nd Chronicles,
13:09 chapter 5. And this is the King James Version.
13:12 Thus all the work that Solomon made for the house of the Lord
13:17 was finished: and Solomon brought in all the things
13:20 that David his father had dedicated;
13:22 and the silver, and the gold, and all the instruments,
13:25 put he among the treasures of the house of God.
13:27 Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel, and all the
13:31 heads of the tribes, the chief of the fathers of the children
13:34 of Israel, unto Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the covenant
13:38 of the Lord out of the city of David, which is Zion.
13:41 Wherefore all the men of Israel assembled themselves unto the
13:45 king in the feast which was in the 7th month and all the elders
13:48 of Israel came; and the Levites took up the ark,
13:51 and they brought up the ark, and the tabernacle of the
13:54 congregation, and all the holy vessels that were in the
13:56 tabernacle, these did the priests and the Levites
14:00 bring up. Also king Solomon, and all the congregation of Israel
14:03 that were assembled unto him before the ark, sacrificed sheep
14:07 and oxen which could not be told nor numbered for multitude.
14:10 And the priests brought in the ark of the covenant of the Lord
14:13 unto his place, to the oracle of the house, into the most holy
14:17 place, even under the wings of the cherubims: for the cherubims
14:21 spread forth their wings over the place of the ark,
14:23 and the cherubims covered the ark and the staves thereof above
14:28 And they drew out the staves of the ark, that the ends of the
14:31 staves were seen from the ark before the oracle;
14:33 but they were not seen without. And there it is unto this day.
