00:14 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:16 I'm Kelly Mowrer and today we're going to continue reading
00:19 the story of King Hezekiah, found in 2nd Kings. But before
00:24 we start, let's pray together. Dear God, thank you for this
00:29 story of King Hezekiah, who has served you with all his heart.
00:33 And for the example that he left for us. Thank you that your
00:37 deliverance and your peace keep us when we are following
00:42 in your way. Please be with us now as we read these words
00:45 that we may be encouraged in our own walk with you, to serve you
00:49 better. We love you so much and thank you for loving us. Amen.
00:52 I'm picking up now when the Lord is assuring Hezekiah that
00:58 he will receive deliverance from the Assyrians. We're reading in
01:02 2nd Kings, chapter 19 and beginning in verse 35.
01:05 This is the King James Version. And it came to pass that night
01:11 that the angel of the Lord went out and smote in the camp of the
01:15 Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand:
01:18 And when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all
01:23 dead corpses. So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed,
01:27 and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh. And it came to pass,
01:32 as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god,
01:35 that Adramelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword:
01:39 and they escaped into the land of Armenia.
01:42 And Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.
01:47 We're continuing now in 2nd Kings, chapter 20,
01:51 This is the King James Version. In those days was Hezekiah
01:55 sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came
01:59 to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Set thine house
02:03 in order, for thou shalt die, and not live.
02:06 Then he turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto the Lord,
02:10 saying, I beseech thee, O Lord, remember now how I have walked
02:15 before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done
02:19 that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore.
02:23 And it came to pass, afore Isaiah was gone out into the
02:27 middle court, that the word of the Lord came to him, saying,
02:30 Turn again, and tell Hezekiah captain of my people,
02:33 Thus saith the Lord, the God of David thy father, I have heard
02:38 thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee:
02:43 on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the Lord.
02:47 And I will add unto thy days 15 years; and I will deliver thee
02:52 and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria;
02:56 and I will defend this city for mine own sake, and for my
03:00 servant David's sake. And Isaiah said, Take a lump of figs.
03:04 And they took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered.
03:09 And Hezekiah said unto Isaiah, What shall be the sign
03:13 that the Lord will heal me, and that I shall go up into the
03:16 house of the Lord the 3rd day? And Isaiah said, this sign shall
03:21 thou have of the Lord, that the Lord will do the thing that he
03:24 hath spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten degrees, or go back
03:30 ten degrees? And Hezekiah answered, It is a light thing
03:34 for the shadow to go down ten degrees: nay, but let the shadow
03:39 return backward ten degrees. And Isaiah the prophet cried
03:44 unto the Lord: and he brought the shadow ten degrees backward,
03:48 by which it had gone down in the dial of Ahaz.
03:51 At that time Berodachbaladan the son of Baladan, king of Babylon,
03:57 sent letters and a present unto Hezekiah: for he had heard
04:02 that Hezekiah had been sick. And Hezekiah hearkened unto them,
04:06 and shewed them all the house of his precious things,
04:10 the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious
04:14 ointment, and all the house of his armour, and all that was
04:18 found in his treasures: there was nothing in his house,
04:20 nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah shewed them not.
04:24 Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king Hezekiah and said unto
04:29 him, What said these men? and from whence came they unto thee?
04:34 And Hezekiah said, They are come from a far country,
04:38 even from Babylon. And he said, What have they seen in
04:42 thine house? And Hezekiah answered, All the things that
04:46 are in mine house, have they seen: there is nothing among
04:49 my treasures that I have not shewed them. And Isaiah said
04:53 unto Hezekiah, Hear the word of the Lord. Behold, the days come,
04:57 that all that is in thine house and that which thy fathers
04:59 have laid up in store unto this day, shall be carried into
05:03 Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the Lord. And of thy sons
05:09 that shall issue from thee, which thou shalt beget,
05:12 shall they take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace
05:16 of the king of Babylon. Then said Hezekiah unto Isaiah,
05:21 Good is the word of the Lord which thou hast spoken.
05:24 And he said, Is it not good, if peace and truth be in my days?
05:29 And the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and all his might,
05:33 and how he made a pool, and a conduit, and brought water into
05:37 the city, are they not written in the book of the chronicles
05:41 of the kings of Judah? And Hezekiah slept with his fathers:
05:45 and Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.
05:48 We're continuing now in 2nd Kings, chapter 21,
05:52 and this is the King James Version.
05:53 Manasseh was 12 years old when he began to reign, and reigned
05:59 50 and 5 years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Hepzibah.
06:03 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord,
06:07 after the abominations of the heathen, whom the Lord cast
06:10 out before the children of Israel. For he built up again
06:15 the high places which Hezekiah his father had destroyed;
06:18 and he reared up altars for Baal, and made a grove,
06:21 as did Ahab king of Israel; and worshipped all the host of
06:25 heaven, and served them. And he built altars in the house of
06:29 the Lord, of which the Lord said, In Jerusalem will I put
06:31 my name. And he built altars for all the host of heaven
06:35 in the two courts of the house of the Lord. And he made his son
06:39 pass through the fire, and observed times, and used
06:42 enchantments, and dealt with familiar spirits and wizards:
06:45 he wrought much wickedness in the sight of the Lord,
06:49 to provoke him to anger. And he set a graven image of the grove
06:53 that he had made in the house, of which the Lord said to David,
06:56 and to Solomon his son, In this house, and in Jerusalem,
07:00 which I have chosen out of all tribes of Israel, will I put my
07:03 name for ever: Neither will I make the feet of Israel move any
07:06 more out of the land which I gave their fathers;
07:08 only if they will observe to do according to all that I have
07:13 commanded them, and according to all the law that my servant
07:17 Moses commanded them. But they hearkened not: and Manasseh
07:21 seduced them to do more evil than did the nations whom
07:25 the Lord destroyed before the children of Israel. And the Lord
07:28 spake by his servants the prophets, saying,
07:31 Because Manasseh king of Judah hath done these abomination,
07:34 and hath done wickedly above all that the Amorites did,
07:38 which were before him, and hath made Judah also to sin with his
07:42 idols: Therefore thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Behold,
07:46 I am bringing such evil upon Jerusalem and Judah,
07:50 that whosoever heareth of it, both his ears shall tingle.
07:54 I will stretch over Jerusalem the line of Samaria, and the
07:58 plummet of the house of Ahab: and I will wipe Jerusalem
08:01 as a man wipeth a dish, wiping it, and turning it upside down.
08:06 And I will forsake the remnant of mine inheritance, and deliver
08:10 them into the hand of their enemies; and they shall become
08:12 a prey and a spoil to all their enemies; Because they have done
08:18 that which was evil in my sight, and hath provoked me
08:22 to anger, since the day their fathers came forth out of Egypt,
08:25 even unto this day. Moreover Manasseh shed innocent blood
08:30 very much, till he had filled Jerusalem from one end to
08:33 another beside his sin wherewith he made Judah to sin, in doing
08:38 that which was evil in the sight of the Lord. Now the rest of the
08:42 acts of Manasseh, and all that he did, and his sin that he
08:46 sinned, are they not written in the book of the chronicles
08:49 of the kings of Judah? And Manasseh slept with his fathers,
08:53 and was buried in the garden of his own house, in the garden
08:55 of Uzzah and Amon his son reigned in his stead.
08:58 Amon was twenty and two years old when he began to reign,
09:01 and he reigned two years in Jerusalem. And his mother's
09:04 name was Meshulemeth, the daughter of Haruz of Jotbah.
09:09 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord,
09:12 as his father, Manasseh. And he walked in all the way that his
09:15 father walked in, and served the idols that his father served
09:18 and worshipped them; and he forsook the Lord God of his
09:23 fathers, and walked not in the way of the Lord.
09:26 And the servants of Amon conspired against him
09:28 and slew the king in his own house. And the people
09:31 of the land slew all them that had conspired against king Amon
09:35 and the people of the land made Josiah his son king in his stead
09:39 Now the rest of the acts of Amon which he did, are they not
09:43 written in the book of the chronicles of the kings
09:45 of Judah? And he was buried in his sepulchre in the garden of
09:48 Uzza: and Josiah his son reigned in his stead.
09:52 We're continuing in 2nd Kings, chapter 22, and this is
09:57 the King James Version. Josiah was 8 years old when he
10:01 began to reign, and he reigned 30 and one years in Jerusalem.
10:05 And his mother's name was Jedidah, the daughter of Adaiah
10:10 of Boscath. And he did that which was right in the sight of
10:14 the Lord, and walked in all the way of David his father,
10:17 and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left.
10:21 And it came to pass in the 18th year of king Josiah,
10:25 that the king sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, the son of
10:30 Meshullam, the scribe, to the house of the Lord, saying,
10:33 Go up to Hilkiah the high priest that he may sum the silver
10:38 which is brought into the house of the Lord, which the keepers
10:41 of the door have gathered of the people: and let them deliver
10:45 it into the hand of the doers of the work that have the oversight
10:49 of the house of the Lord, and let them give it to the doers
10:52 of the work which is in the house of the Lord,
10:55 to repair the breaches of the house, unto carpenters,
10:59 and builders, and masons, and to buy timber and hewn stone to
11:04 repair the house. Howbeit there was no reckoning made with them
11:08 of the money that was delivered into their hand, because they
11:11 dealt faithfully. And Hilkiah the high priest said unto
11:16 Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house
11:19 of the Lord. And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan,
11:22 and he read it. And Shaphan the scribe came to the king,
11:26 and brought the king word again, and said, Thy servants have
11:29 gathered the money that was found in the house, and have
11:31 delivered it into the hand of them that do the work,
11:33 that have the oversight of the house of the Lord.
11:36 And Shaphan the scribe shewed the king, saying, Hilkiah the
11:40 priest hath delivered me a book. And Shaphan read it before the
11:45 king. And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words
11:48 of the book of the law, that he rent his clothes.
11:52 And the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam the son
11:57 of Shaphan, and Achbor the son of Michaiah, and Shaphan the
12:01 scribe and Asahiah a servant of the king's, saying, Go ye,
12:05 inquire of the Lord for me, and for the people, and for all
12:08 Judah, concerning the words of this book that is found:
12:11 for great is the wrath of the Lord that is kindled against us,
12:14 because our fathers have not hearkened unto the words of
12:18 this book to do according unto all that which is written
12:21 concerning us. So Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam, and Achbor,
12:26 and Shaphan, and Asahiah, went unto Huldah the prophetess,
12:31 the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas,
12:35 keeper of the wardrobe; - now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the
12:39 college; - and they communed with her. And she said unto them
12:43 Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Tell the man that sent
12:46 you to me. Thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will bring evil upon
12:51 this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof,
12:53 even all the words of the book which the king of Judah
12:56 hath read: Because they have forsaken me, and have burned
13:00 incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger
13:04 with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall
13:07 be kindled against this place and shall not be quenched.
13:10 But to the king of Judah which sent you to inquire of the Lord,
13:15 thus shall ye say to him, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel,
13:19 as touching the words which thou hast heard; Because thine
13:23 heart was tender, and thou hast humbled thyself before the Lord,
13:27 when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against
13:31 the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation
13:34 and a curse, and has rent thy clothes, and wept before me;
13:38 I also have heard thee, saith the Lord. Behold therefore,
13:43 I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be
13:47 gathered into thy grave in peace and thine eyes shall not see
13:51 all the evil which I will bring upon this place.
13:54 And they brought the king word again.
13:56 Continuing to read in 2nd Kings, chapter 23, and this is the
14:00 King James Version. And the king sent, and they
14:04 gathered unto him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem.
14:07 And the king went up into the house of the Lord, and all the
14:10 men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem
14:13 with him, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the people
14:16 both small and great: and he read in their ears all the words
14:21 of the book of the covenant which was found in the house
14:24 of the Lord. Thank you for joining with me
14:27 today to read the story of king Hezekiah, and those
14:32 that followed after him. And by God's grace may we continue
14:36 to give Him our full heart and serve him only. Goodbye.
