00:15 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:17 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and today we're reading in 2nd Kings,
00:20 continuing the story of Elisha. Before we read, let's pray
00:24 together. Dear Lord, please come and be with us now and may the
00:31 words that we read not just be a message that we hear and then
00:35 go away and forget; but may these words go deep into
00:39 our hearts, take root and to bear fruit to your glory.
00:43 Thank you so much for loving us. We love you. Amen
00:47 We're reading in 2nd Kings, chapter 8,
00:50 This is the King James Version. And Benhadad, the king of Syria,
00:54 is sick. We're going to pick up the story there.
00:58 And the king said unto Hazael, take a present in thine hand,
01:04 and go, meet the man of God, and inquire of the Lord by him,
01:08 saying, Shall I recover of this disease? So Hazael went to meet
01:14 him and took a present with him, even of every good thing
01:16 of Damascus, 40 camels' burden, and came and stood before him,
01:21 and said, Thy son Benhadad, king of Syria hath sent me to thee,
01:25 saying, Shall I recover of this disease? And Elisha said unto
01:31 him, Go, say unto him, Thou mayest certainly recover:
01:34 howbeit the Lord hath shewed me that he shall surely die.
01:38 And he settled his countenance stedfastly until he was ashamed:
01:43 and the man of God wept. And Hazael said, Why weepest
01:47 my lord? And he answered, Because I know the evil
01:51 that thou wilt do unto the children of Israel:
01:53 their strong holds wilt thou set on fire, and their young men
01:57 wilt thou slay with the sword, and wilt dash their children,
02:00 and rip up their women with child. And Hazael said,
02:04 But what, is thy servant a dog, that he should do this great
02:07 thing? And Elisha answered, The Lord hath shewed me that thou
02:13 shalt be king over Syria. So he departed from Elisha,
02:17 and came to his master; who said to him, What said Elisha
02:20 to thee? And he answered, He told me that thou shouldest
02:23 surely recover. And it came to pass on the morrow, that he took
02:27 a thick cloth, and dipped it in water, and spread it on his face
02:31 so that he died: and Hazael reigned in his stead.
02:35 And in the 5th year of Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel,
02:40 Jehoshaphat being then king of Judah, Jehoram the son of
02:44 Jehoshaphat king of Judah began to reign.
02:47 Thirty and two years old was he when he began to reign;
02:49 and he reigned 8 years in Jerusalem. And he walked in
02:53 the way of the kings of Israel, as did the house of Ahab:
02:56 for the daughter of Ahab was his wife: and he did evil
02:59 in the sight of the Lord. Yet the Lord would not destroy Judah
03:03 for David his servant's sake, as he promised him to give him
03:06 alway a light, and to his children. In his days Edom
03:11 revolted from under the hand of Judah, and made a king over
03:14 themselves. So Joram went over to Zair and all the chariots
03:18 with him: and he rose by night, and smote the Edomites which
03:21 compassed him about, and the captains of the chariots:
03:24 and the people fled into their tents. Yet Edom revolted
03:28 from under the hand of Judah to this day. Then Libnah revolted
03:32 at the same time. And the rest of the acts of Joram,
03:35 and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the
03:38 chronicles of the kings of Judah? And Joram slept
03:42 with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of
03:45 David: and Ahaziah his son reigned in his stead.
03:49 In the 12th year of Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel
03:52 did Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah begin to reign.
03:56 Two and twenty years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign;
03:59 and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. And his mother's name
04:03 was Athaliah, the daughter of Omri king of Israel.
04:06 And he walked in the way of the house of Ahab, and did evil
04:10 in the sight of the Lord, as did the house of Ahab: for he was
04:13 the son in law of the house of Ahab. And he went with Joram
04:17 the son of Ahab to the war against Hazael king of Syria
04:21 in Ramoth-gilead and the Syrians wounded Joram. And king Joram
04:26 went back to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds which
04:29 the Syrians had given him at Ramah, when he fought against
04:32 Hazael king of Syria. And Ahaziah the son of Jehoram
04:36 the king of Judah went down to see Joram the son of Ahab
04:39 in Jezreel, because he was sick. We're continuing now with
04:44 2nd Kings, chapter 9, and this is the King James Version.
04:47 And Elisha the prophet called one of the children of the
04:51 prophets, and said unto him, Gird up thy loins, and take
04:54 this box of oil in thine hand, and go to Ramoth-gilead:
04:57 And when thou comest thither, look out there Jehu the son of
05:02 Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi, and go in, and make him arise up
05:07 from among his brethren, and carry him to an inner chamber;
05:10 Then take the box of oil, and pour it on his head, and say,
05:13 Thus saith the Lord, I have anointed thee king over Israel.
05:16 Then open the door, and flee, and tarry not. So the young man,
05:20 even the young man the prophet, went to Ramoth-gilead.
05:23 And when he came, behold, the captains of the host were
05:27 sitting; and he said, I have an errand to thee, O captain.
05:30 And Jehu said, Unto which of all of us? And he said, To thee,
05:35 O Captain. And he arose, and went into the house;
05:38 and he poured the oil on his head, and said unto him,
05:40 Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, I have anointed thee
05:44 king over the people of the Lord even over Israel. And thou shalt
05:48 smite the house of Ahab thy master, that I may avenge
05:51 the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all
05:55 the servants of the Lord at the hand of Jezebel.
05:57 For the whole house of Ahab shall perish: and I will cut off
06:01 from Ahab him that pisseth against the wall, and him that
06:05 is shut up and left in Israel: And I will make the house of
06:08 Ahab like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the
06:12 house of Baasha the son of Ahijah: And the dogs shall eat
06:16 Jezebel in the portion of Jezreel, and there shall be none
06:19 to bury her. And he opened the door and fled. Then Jehu came
06:25 forth to the servants of his Lord: and one said unto him,
06:28 Is all well? wherefore came this mad fellow to thee?
06:31 And he said unto them, Ye know the man, and his communication.
06:35 And they said, It is false; tell us now. And he said, thus and
06:42 thus spake he to me, saying, Thus saith the Lord,
06:45 I have anointed thee king over Israel. Then they hasted,
06:48 and took every man his garment, and put it under him on the top
06:51 of the stairs, and blew with trumpets, saying, Jehu is king.
06:55 So Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi conspired
07:00 against Joram. Now, Joram had kept Ramoth-gilead, he and all
07:04 Israel, because of Hazael king of Syria. But king Joram was
07:08 returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds
07:11 which the Syrians had given him when he fought with Hazael
07:14 king of Syria. And Jehu said, If it be your minds, then let none
07:19 go forth nor escape out of the city to go to tell it in Jezreel
07:23 So Jehu rode in a chariot, and went to Jezreel; for Joram lay
07:28 there. And Ahaziah king of Judah was come down to see Joram.
07:32 And there stood a watchman on the tower in Jezreel,
07:34 and he spied the company of Jehu as he came, and said,
07:37 I see a company. And Joram said, Take an horseman, and send to
07:42 meet them, and let him say, Is it peace?
07:44 So there went one on horse-back to meet him, and said,
07:48 Thus saith the king, Is it peace? And Jehu said,
07:51 What hast thou to do with peace? turn thee behind me.
07:54 And the watchman told, saying, The messenger came to them,
07:58 but he cometh not again. Then he sent out a 2nd on horse-back,
08:03 which came to them, and said, Thus saith the king Is it peace?
08:06 And Jehu answered, What hast thou to do with peace?
08:09 turn thee behind me. And the watchman told, saying,
08:13 He came even unto them, and cometh not again:
08:16 and the driving is like the driving of Jehu
08:19 the son of Nimshi; for he driveth furiously.
08:22 And Joram said, Make ready. And his chariot was made ready.
08:26 And Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah went out,
08:31 each in his chariot, and they went out against Jehu,
08:34 and met him in the portion of Naboth the Jezreelite.
08:36 And it came to pass, when Joram saw Jehu? that he said,
08:41 Is it peace, Jehu? And he answered, What peace,
08:45 so long as the whoredoms of thy mother Jezebel and her
08:48 witchcrafts are so many? And Joram turned his hands and fled.
08:53 and said to Ahaziah, There is treachery, O Ahaziah.
08:55 And Jehu drew a bow with his full strength, and smote Jehoram
09:01 between his arms, and the arrow went out at his heart,
09:04 and he sunk down in his chariot. Then said Jehu to Bidkar
09:09 his captain, Take up, and cast him in the portion of the field
09:12 of Naboth the Jezreelite: for remember how that, when I
09:16 rode together after Ahab his father,
09:19 the Lord laid this burden upon him; Surely I have seen
09:23 yesterday the blood of Naboth, and the blood of his sons,
09:25 saith the Lord; and I will requite thee in this plat,
09:28 saith the Lord. Now therefore take and cast him into the plat
09:32 of ground, according to the word of the Lord.
09:34 But when Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this, he fled
09:39 by the way of the garden house. And Jehu followed after him,
09:42 and said, Smite him also in the chariot. And they did so
09:47 at the going up to Gur, which is by Ibleam. And he fled
09:51 to Megiddo, and died there. And his servants carried him
09:56 in a chariot to Jerusalem, and buried him in his sepulchre
09:58 with his fathers in the city of Davie. And in the 11th year
10:02 of Joram the son of Ahab began Ahaziah to reign over Judah.
10:06 And when Jehu was come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it;
10:11 and she painted her face, and tired her head, and looked out
10:15 at a window. And as Jehu entered in at the gate, she said,
10:19 Had Zimri peace, who slew his master? And he lifted up
10:24 his face to the window and said, Who is on my side? who?
10:28 And there looked out to him two or three eunuchs. And he said,
10:33 Throw her down. So they threw her down: and some of her blood
10:38 was sprinkled on the wall, and on the horses: and he trode her
10:42 under foot. And when he was come in, he did eat and drink,
10:45 and said, God see now this cursed woman, and bury her:
10:48 for she is a king's daughter. And they went to bury her:
10:52 but they found no more of her than a skull, and the feet,
10:55 and the palms of her hands. Wherefore they came again,
10:58 and told him. And he said, This is the word of the Lord,
11:01 which he spake by his servant Elijah the Tishbite, saying,
11:04 In the portion of Jezreel shall dogs eat the flesh of Jezebel:
11:08 And the carcase of Jezebel shall be as dung upon the face of the
11:12 field in the portion of Jezreel so that they shall not say,
11:16 This is Jezebel. Continuing in the book
11:19 of 2nd Kings, chapter 10. This is the King James Version.
11:23 And Ahab had 70 sons in Samaria. And Jehu wrote letters and sent
11:30 to Samaria, unto the rulers of Jezreel, to the elders, and to
11:34 them that brought up Ahab's children, saying,
11:36 Now as soon as this letter cometh to you, seeing your
11:41 master's sons are with you, and there are with you chariots and
11:44 horses, a fenced city also, and armour; Look even out the best
11:49 and meetest of your master's sons and set him on his father's
11:53 throne, and fight for your master's house. But they were
11:57 exceedingly afraid, and said, Behold, two kings stood not
12:02 before him: how then shall we stand? And he that was over
12:06 the house, and he that was over the city, the elders also,
12:09 and the bringers up of the children, sent to Jehu, saying,
12:13 We are thy servants, and will do all that thou shalt bid us;
12:17 we will not make any king: do thou that which is good
12:21 in thine eyes. Then he wrote a letter the second time to them,
12:26 saying, If ye be mine, and if ye will hearken unto my voice,
12:30 take ye the heads of the men your master's sons,
12:34 and come to me to Jezreel by tomorrow this time.
12:38 Now the king's sons, being 70 persons, were with the great men
12:43 of the city, which brought them up. And it came to pass,
12:46 when the letter came to them, that they took the king's sons,
12:49 and slew 70 persons, and put their heads in baskets,
12:54 and sent him them to Jezreel. And there came a messenger,
12:58 and told him saying, They have brought the heads of the king's
13:00 sons. And he said, Lay ye them in two heaps at the entering in
13:05 of the gate until the morning. And it came to pass
13:09 in the morning, that he went out, and stood, and said to all
13:11 the people, Ye be righteous: behold, I conspired against my
13:15 master, and slew him: but who slew all these? Know now that
13:20 there shall fall unto the earth nothing of the word of the Lord,
13:23 which the Lord spake concerning the house of Ahab: for the Lord
13:26 hath done that which he spake by his servant Elijah.
13:30 So Jehu slew all that remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel,
13:35 and all his great men, and his kinfolks, and his priests,
13:38 until h left him none remaining. And he arose and departed,
13:43 and came to Samaria. And as he was at the shearing house in the
13:47 way, Jehu met with the brethren of Ahaziah king of Judah,
13:50 and said, Who are ye? And they answered, We are the brethren
13:54 of Ahaziah; and we go down to salute the children of the king
13:57 and the children of the queen. And he said, Take them alive.
14:01 And they took them alive, and slew them at the pit of the
14:04 shearing house, even two and forty men; neither left he any
14:08 of them. And when he was departed thence,
14:11 he lighted on Jehonadab the son of Rechab coming to meet him:
14:15 and he saluted him, and said to him, Is thine heart right,
14:18 as my heart is with thy heart? And Jehonadab answered,
14:22 It is. If it be, give me thine hand. And he gave him his hand;
14:27 And he took him up to him in the chariot.
14:29 Please join me again next time as we read the word of God
14:32 together. Goodbye.
