00:16 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and thank you for joining with me today 00:21 to read the word of God. When we were last together we were 00:24 reading of the death of king Solomon and how before he died, 00:29 he turned from following God with his whole heart, 00:32 and his heart gave a mixed worship to God, and to the false 00:36 gods of his wives. So the kingdom is going to be removed 00:40 from the hands of his sons. We'll continue reading, 00:43 but let's pray first. Dear Lord, please help us to learn the 00:49 lesson of King Solomon and to not follow what he did, but to 00:55 give to you our whole heart, unmixed and pure in it's focus 01:01 and in it's love for you. Please fill our hearts with that love. 01:05 And help us to show it to you every day of our lives. 01:09 Thank you for being with us now as we read. Amen. 01:12 We're in the book of 1st Kings, in chapter 12, and we're picking 01:18 up in verse 19. And this is the King James Version. 01:21 So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day. 01:27 And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam 01:30 was come again, that they sent and called him unto the 01:33 congregation, and made him king over all Israel: 01:36 there was none that followed the house of David, 01:39 but the tribe of Judah only. And when Rehoboam was come to 01:43 Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe 01:46 of Benjamin, an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, 01:50 which were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, 01:53 to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon. 01:56 But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying, 02:02 Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah and 02:07 unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant 02:10 of the people, saying, Thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not 02:13 go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: 02:17 return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. 02:23 They hearkened therefore to the word of the Lord, and returned 02:27 to depart, according to the word of the Lord. Then Jeroboam built 02:32 Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therin; and went out from 02:37 thence, and built Penuel. And Jeroboam said in his heart, 02:41 Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David: 02:44 If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house 02:47 of the Lord at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people 02:51 turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, 02:54 and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah. 02:58 Whereupon the king took counsel and made two calves of gold, 03:03 and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up 03:06 to Jerusalem. Behold, thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up 03:11 out of the land of Egypt. And he set the one in Bethel, 03:15 and the other put he in Dan. And this thing became a sin: 03:19 for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan. 03:24 And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the 03:28 lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi. 03:31 And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the 8th month, on the 15h day 03:36 of the month like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered 03:41 upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the 03:47 calves that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests 03:50 of the high places which he had made. So he offered upon the 03:55 altar which he had made in Bethel the 15th day of the 8th 03:58 month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; 04:02 and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: 04:06 and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense. 04:09 Continuing in 1st Kings Chapter 13, and this is 04:14 the King James Version. And, Behold, there came a man 04:18 of God out of Judah by the word of the Lord unto Bethel: 04:21 and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense. And he cried 04:26 against the altar in the word of the Lord, and said, O altar, 04:30 altar, thus saith the Lord; Behold, a child shall be born 04:35 unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he 04:41 offer the priests of the high places that burn incense 04:45 upon thee, and men's bones shall be burnt upon thee. 04:48 And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign 04:53 which the Lord hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, 04:57 and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out. 05:00 And it came to pass, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the 05:05 man of God, which had cried against the altar in Bethel, 05:08 that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold 05:12 on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, 05:17 so that he could not pull it in again to him. The altar also 05:23 was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to 05:27 the sign which the man of God had given by the word 05:29 of the Lord. And the king answered and said unto the man 05:33 of God, Entreat now the face of the Lord thy God, and pray 05:37 for me, that my hand may be restored me again. 05:40 And the man of God besought the Lord, and the king's hand 05:44 was restored him again, and became as it was before. 05:47 And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, 05:52 and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward. 05:56 And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me 06:01 half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat 06:04 bread nor drink water in this place: For so was it charged me, 06:09 by the word of the Lord, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, 06:13 nor turn again by the same way that thou camest. So he went 06:18 another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Bethel. 06:23 Now there dwelt an old prophet in Bethel; and his sons came 06:28 and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day 06:31 in Bethel: the words which he had spoken unto the king, 06:35 them they told also to their father. And their father said 06:39 unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way 06:44 the man of God went, which came from Judah. And he said unto his 06:48 sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass: and he rode 06:52 thereon, and went after the man of God, and found him sitting 06:56 under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God 07:00 that camest from Judah? And he said, I am. 07:03 Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread. 07:08 And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: 07:13 neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee 07:15 in this place: For it was said to me by the word of the Lord, 07:19 Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn 07:23 again to go by the way that thou camest. 07:25 He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel 07:32 spake unto me by the word of the Lord, saying, Bring him back 07:36 with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water 07:40 But he lied unto him. So he went back with him, and did eat 07:46 bread in his house, and drank water. And it came to pass, 07:50 as they sat at the table, that the word of the Lord came unto 07:53 the prophet that brought him back: and he cried unto the man 07:57 of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the Lord, 08:00 Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the Lord, and hast 08:04 not kept the commandment which the Lord thy God commanded thee, 08:07 but camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the 08:11 place, of which the Lord did say to thee, Eat no bread, 08:15 and drink no water; thy carcass shall not come unto the 08:19 sepulcher of thy fathers. 08:27 And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, 08:30 and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, 08:33 to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back. 08:36 And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him 08:40 and his carcass was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, 08:44 the lion also stood by the carcass. And, behold, men passed 08:50 by and saw the carcass cast in the way, and the lion 08:53 standing by the carcass: and they came and told it 08:56 in the city where the old prophet dwelt. 08:59 And when the prophet that brought him back from the way 09:02 heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, 09:05 who was disobedient unto the word of the Lord: therefore 09:09 the Lord hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn 09:11 him, and slain him, according to the word of the Lord, 09:14 which he spake unto him. And he spake to his sons, saying, 09:18 Saddle me the ass. And they saddled him. And he went 09:23 and found his carcass cast in the way, and the ass and the 09:27 lion standing by the carcass: the lion had not eaten 09:30 the carcass, nor torn the ass. And the prophet took up the 09:35 carcass of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass and brought 09:38 it back: and the old prophet came to the city, to mourn 09:42 and to bury him. And he laid his carcass in his own grave; 09:47 and they mourned over him, saying, Alas, my brother! 09:49 And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake 09:53 to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the 09:57 sepulcher wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside 10:01 his bones: For the saying which he cried by the word of the Lord 10:04 against the altar in Bethel, and against all the houses of the 10:07 high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely 10:11 come to pass. After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his 10:16 evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests 10:21 of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, 10:25 and he became one of the priests of the high places. 10:28 And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, 10:32 even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face 10:37 of the earth. Continuing in the book of 10:41 1st Kings, Chapter 14, This is the King James Version. 10:45 At that time Abijah the son of Jeroboam fell sick, 10:51 And Jeroboam said to his wife, Arise, I pray thee, and disguise 10:55 thyself, that thou be not known to be the wife of Jeroboam 10:59 and get thee to Shiloh: behold, there is Ahijah the prophet, 11:03 which told me that I should be king over this people. 11:06 And take with thee ten loaves, and cracknels, and a cruise of 11:10 honey and go to him: he shall tell thee what shall become 11:14 of the child. And Jeroboam's wife did so, and arose, and went 11:18 to Shiloh, and came to the house of Ahijah. And Ahijah could not 11:23 see; for his eyes were set by reason of his age. 11:26 And the Lord said unto Ahijah, Behold, the wife of Jeroboam 11:30 cometh to ask a thing of thee for her son; for he is sick: 11:34 thus and thus shalt thou say unto her: for it shall be, 11:38 when she cometh in that she shall feign herself to be 11:42 another woman. And it was so when Ahijah heard the sound 11:47 of her feet, as she came in the door, that he said, Come in, 11:51 thou wife of Jeroboam; why feignest thou thyself to be 11:55 another? for I am sent to thee with heavy tidings. Go tell 12:01 Jeroboam, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Forasmuch as I 12:06 exalted thee from among the people, and made thee prince 12:10 over my people Israel, and rent the kingdom away from the house 12:15 of David, and gave it thee: and yet thou hast not been as my 12:19 servant David, who kept my commandments, and who followed 12:23 me with all his heart, to do that only which was right 12:28 in mine eyes; but hast done evil above all that were before 12:32 thee: for thou hast gone and made thee other gods, 12:35 and molten images, to provoke me to anger, and hast cast me 12:39 behind thy back: Therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon 12:45 the house of Jeroboam, and will cut off from Jeroboam him that 12:49 pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left 12:52 in Israel, and will take away the remnant of the house of 12:56 Jeroboam, as a man taketh away dung, till it be all gone. 13:01 Him that dieth of Jeroboam in the city shall the dogs eat; 13:06 and him that dieth in the field shall the fowls of the air eat: 13:10 for the Lord hath spoken it. Arise thou therefore, get thee 13:14 to thine own house: and when thy feet enter into the city, 13:17 the child shall die. And all Israel shall mourn for him, and 13:22 bury him: for he only of Jeroboam shall come to the grave 13:26 because in him there is found some good thing toward the Lord 13:30 God of Israel in the house of Jeroboam. 13:32 Moreover the Lord shall raise him up a king over Israel, 13:36 who shall cut off the house of Jeroboam that day: but what? 13:40 even now. For the Lord shall smite Israel, as a reed 13:45 is shaken in the water, and he shall root up Israel out of this 13:48 good land, which he gave to their fathers, and shall scatter 13:51 them beyond the river, because they have made their groves, 13:55 provoking the Lord to anger. And he shall give Israel up 13:59 because of the sins of Jeroboam, who did sin, and who made Israel 14:01 to sin. And Jeroboam's wife arose, and departed, and came to 14:07 Tirzah: and when she came to the threshold of the door, the child 14:10 died; and they buried him; and all Israel mourned for him, 14:14 according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by the hand 14:18 of his servant Ahijah the prophet. And the rest of 14:21 the acts of Jeroboam, how he warred, and how he reigned, 14:24 behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles 14:27 of the kings of Israel. 14:28 Thank you for being with me today to read the word of God. 14:32 Please join me again next time. |
