00:17 Hello, and welcome back to His Words are Life.
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and we're reading today from the book 00:21 of 1st Kings. Before we read, let's pray together. 00:24 Dear God, thank you so much for these stories about Solomon, 00:30 and about Your people, and Lord we want to learn the lessons 00:36 and not fail to walk in your ways, and to keep 00:39 your commands. We can't do it without you help 00:42 and by your grace. Please forgive our sins and strengthen 00:46 us now as we hear Your word. Thank you for loving us. 00:49 We love you. Amen. 00:51 We're reading in the book of 1st Kings, in chapter 10 and 00:55 we're picking up with verse 18. This is the King James Version. 00:58 Moreover, the king made a great throne of ivory and overlaid it 01:04 with the best gold. The throne had six steps and the top 01:09 of the throne was round behind. And there were stays on either 01:13 side, on the place of the seat, and two lions stood beside 01:17 the stays. And twelve lions stood there on the one side 01:21 and on the other upon the six steps: there was not the like 01:25 made in any kingdom. And all king Solomon's drinking vessels 01:30 were of gold. And all the vessels of the house 01:33 of the Forest of Lebanon 01:34 were of pure gold; none were of silver: it was nothing accounted 01:38 of in the days of Solomon. For the king had at sea a navy of 01:43 Tharshish with the navy of Hiram: once in 3 years came 01:46 the navy of Tharshish, bringing gold, and silver, ivory and apes 01:51 and peacocks. So king Solomon exceeded all the kings of the 01:57 earth for riches and for wisdom and all the earth sought 02:02 to Solomon, to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart. 02:06 And they brought every man his present, vessels of silver, 02:11 and vessels of gold, and garments, and armor, and spices, 02:15 horses, and mules, a rate year by year. And Solomon gathered 02:21 together chariots and horsemen: and he had 1,400 chariots, 02:26 and 12,000 horsemen, whom he bestowed in the cities for 02:30 chariots, and with the king at Jerusalem. And the king 02:34 made silver to be in Jerusalem as stones, and cedars made he 02:38 to be as the sycamore trees that are in the vale, 02:41 for abundance. And Solomon had horses brought out of Egypt, 02:45 and linen yarn: the king's merchants received the linen 02:49 yarn at a price. And a chariot came up and went out of Egypt 02:53 for 600 shekels of silver, and a horse for 150: and so for all 02:58 the kings of the Hittites, and for the kings of Syria, 03:01 did they bring them out by their means. 03:05 Continuing now in 1 Kings, chapter 11. 03:08 This is the King James Version. 03:10 But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with 03:16 the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, 03:20 Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites; of the nations 03:25 concerning which the Lord said unto the children of Israel, 03:28 Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto 03:33 you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods 03:39 Solomon clave unto these in love and he had 700 wives, princesses 03:47 and 300 concubines; and his wives turned away his heart. 03:53 For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, 03:57 that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: 04:01 and his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God, 04:05 as was the heart of David his father. For Solomon went after 04:11 Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom 04:15 the abomination of the Ammonites. 04:17 And Solomon did evil in the sight of the Lord, 04:21 and went not fully after the Lord, as did David his father. 04:26 Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh, 04:30 the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is before Jerusalem, 04:35 and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon. 04:39 And likewise did he for all his strange wives, which burnt 04:45 incense and sacrificed unto their gods. And the Lord was 04:50 angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned from the Lord 04:54 God of Israel which had appeared unto him twice and had commanded 04:59 him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other 05:03 gods. but he kept not that which the Lord commanded. 05:08 Wherefore the Lord said unto Solomon, Forasmuch as this is 05:12 done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes 05:16 which I have commanded thee, I will surely rend the kingdom 05:20 from thee, and will give it to thy servant. Notwithstanding 05:25 in thy days I will not do it for David thy father's sake: 05:29 but I will rend it out of the hand of thy son. Howbeit 05:32 I will not rend away all the kingdom; but will give one tribe 05:36 to thy son for David my servant's sake, 05:39 and for Jerusalem's sake which I have chosen. And the Lord 05:43 stirred up an adversary unto Solomon, Hadad the Edomite: 05:47 He was of the king's seed in Edom, For it came to pass, when 05:51 David was in Edom, and Joab the captain of the host was gone 05:55 up to bury the slain, after he had smitten every male in Edom; 05:59 For 6 months did Joab remain there with all Israel, until he 06:04 had cut off every male in Edom: That Hadad fled, he and certain 06:09 Edomites of his father's servants with him, 06:11 to go into Egypt; Hadad being yet a little child. 06:15 And they arose out of Midian, and came to Paran: 06:18 and they took men with them out of Paran, and they came to Egypt 06:22 unto Pharaoh king of Egypt; which gave him an house, 06:25 and appointed him victuals, and gave him land. 06:27 And Hadad found great favor in the sight of Pharaoh so that 06:31 he gave him to wife the sister of his own wife, the sister of 06:35 Tahpenes the queen. And the sister of Tahpenes bare him 06:40 Genubath his son, whom Tahpenes weaned in Pharaoh's house: 06:44 and Genubath was in Pharaoh's household among the sons 06:48 of Pharaoh. And when Hadad heard in Egypt that David slept with 06:53 his fathers, and that Joab the captain of the host was dead, 06:56 Hadad said to Pharaoh, Let me depart, that I may go to mine 07:01 own country. Then Pharaoh said unto him, But what hast thou 07:05 lacked with me, that, behold, thou seekest to go to thine own 07:09 country? And he answered, Nothing: howbeit let me go 07:13 in any wise. And God stirred him up another adversary, Rezon 07:19 the son of Eliadah, which fled from his lord Hadadezer 07:23 king of Zobah: And he gathered men unto him, and became captain 07:27 over a band, when David slew them of Zobah: and they went to 07:32 Damascus, and dwelt therein, and reigned in Damascus. 07:34 And he was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon, 07:39 beside the mischief that Hadad did: and he abhorred Israel, 07:43 and reigned over Syria. And Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, 07:47 an Ephrathite of Zereda, Solomon's servant, 07:51 whose mother's name was Zeruah, a widow woman, even he lifted up 07:56 his hand against the king. And this was the cause that he 07:59 lifted up his hand against the king. Solomon built Millo, 08:03 and repaired the breaches of the city of David his father. 08:07 And the man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valor: 08:11 and Solomon seeing the young man that he was industrious, 08:15 he made him ruler over all the charge of the house of Joseph. 08:19 And it came to pass at that time when Jeroboam went out of 08:23 Jerusalem, that the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him 08:29 in the way; and he had clad himself with a new garment; 08:32 and they two were alone in the field: And Ahijah caught the new 08:38 garment that was on him, and rent it in twelve pieces: 08:42 And he said to Jeroboam, Take thee ten pieces: for thus saith 08:46 the Lord, the God of Israel, Behold, I will rend the kingdom 08:51 out of the hand of Solomon, and will give ten tribes to thee: 08:55 But he shall have one tribe for my servant David's sake, 08:59 and for Jerusalem's sake, the city which I have chosen out of 09:03 all the tribes of Israel: Because that they have forsaken 09:07 me, and have worshipped Ashtoreth the goddess of the 09:10 Zidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Milcom the god 09:15 of the children of Ammon, and have not walked in my ways, 09:18 to do that which is right in mine eyes, and to keep my 09:21 statutes and my judgments, as did David his father. Howbeit 09:25 I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand: 09:28 but I will make him prince all the days of his life for David 09:32 my servant's sake, whom I chose because he kept my commandments 09:36 and my statutes: But I will take the kingdom out of his son's 09:41 hand, and will give it unto thee even ten tribes. And unto his 09:47 son will I give one tribe, that David my servant may have a 09:51 light alway before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have 09:55 chosen me to put my name there. And I will take thee, 09:58 and thou shalt reign according to all that thy soul desireth, 10:02 and shalt be king over Israel. And it shall be, if thou wilt 10:06 hearken unto all that I command thee, and wilt walk in my ways, 10:11 and do that is right in my sight, to keep my statutes 10:16 and my commandments, as David my servant did; that I will be 10:19 with thee, and build thee a sure house as I built for David, 10:25 and will give Israel unto thee. And I will for this afflict the 10:31 seed of David, but not forever. Solomon sought therefore to kill 10:36 Jeroboam. And Jeroboam arose, and fled into Egypt unto Shishak 10:41 king of Egypt, and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon. 10:45 And the rest of the acts of Solomon, and all that he did, 10:49 and his wisdom, are they not written in the book of the acts 10:53 of Solomon? And the time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem 10:56 over all Israel was 40 years. And Solomon slept with his 11:01 fathers, and was buried in the city of David his father: 11:05 And Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead. 11:09 We're continuing now in 1st Kings, chapter 12. 11:13 And this is the King James Version. 11:15 And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come 11:20 to Shechem to make him king. And it came to pass, 11:24 when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt heard of it 11:28 for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, 11:31 and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt; That they sent and called him. 11:35 and Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, 11:38 and spake unto Rehoboam, saying, Thy father made our yoke 11:43 grevious: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy 11:48 father and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we 11:52 will serve thee. And he said unto them, Depart yet for 3 days 11:58 then come again to me. And the people departed. 12:02 And King Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood 12:06 before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, 12:10 How do ye advise that I may answer this people? 12:13 And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto 12:18 this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and 12:22 speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants 12:26 for ever. But he forsook the counsel of the old men, 12:31 which they had given him, and consulted with the young men 12:35 that were grown up with him: And which stood before him: 12:38 And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may 12:42 answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, 12:44 Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter? 12:48 And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto 12:51 him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that 12:54 spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, 12:57 but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto 13:01 them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins. 13:05 And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, 13:09 I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with 13:13 whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. 13:16 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the 3rd day, 13:20 as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again 13:23 on the 3rd day. And the king answered the people roughly, 13:27 and forsook the old men's counsel that they gave him; 13:31 And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, 13:34 saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your 13:38 yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will 13:41 chastise you with scorpions. Wherefore the king hearkened 13:45 not unto the people; for the cause was from the Lord, that he 13:49 might perform his saying, which the Lord spake by Ahijah 13:53 the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat. 13:56 So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not 14:00 unto them, the people answered the king saying, What portion 14:04 have we in David? neither have we inheritance the son of Jesse: 14:08 to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. 14:12 So Israel departed unto their tents. But as for the children 14:18 of Israel which dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam 14:21 reigned over them. Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was 14:25 over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, 14:27 that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him 14:31 up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem. |
