00:16 Hello, and welcome back to His Words are Life.
00:19 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and today we are going to read together in
00:21 the book of 2nd Samuel. But before we begin, let's pray.
00:25 Dear God, we would ask that you would please send your
00:29 Holy Spirit to us now, so that these words that we hear will be
00:34 the lessons that you want for us to learn and will be light and
00:38 life in our heart to your glory. We love you and thank you
00:41 for loving us. Amen
00:43 When we were last together, David had sent word to Hanun
00:49 son of Nahash, and told him because your father showed
00:52 kindness unto me, I also will show kindness to you.
00:55 We're going to pick up the story in 2nd Samuel, chapter 10
01:00 verse 3. -And the princes of the children of Ammon said unto
01:05 Hanun, their Lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honor thy father
01:09 that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David rather
01:14 sent his servants unto thee to search the city, and to spy
01:18 it out, and to overthrow it? Wherefore Hanun took David's
01:21 servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards and cut off
01:26 their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks,
01:28 and sent them away. When they told it unto David, he sent to
01:33 meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed:
01:35 And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards
01:39 be grown, and then return. And when the children of Ammon
01:43 saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammon
01:48 sent and hired the Syrians of Bethrehob, and the Syrians of
01:53 Zoba, 20,000 footmen, and of king Maacah a thousand men,
01:58 and of Ishtob 12,000 men. And when David heard of it,
02:03 he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.
02:07 And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array
02:10 at the entering in of the gate: and the Syrians of Zoba and of
02:14 Rehob, and Ishtob, and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.
02:18 When Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him
02:22 before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel,
02:27 and put them in array against the Syrians.
02:30 And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of
02:33 Abishai, his brother, that he might put them in array against
02:37 the children of Ammon. And he said, If the Syrians be too
02:41 strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of
02:44 Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.
02:48 Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people,
02:52 and for the cities of our God: and the Lord do that which
02:55 seemeth him good. And Joab drew nigh, and the people that were
03:00 with him, unto the battle against the Syrians:
03:03 and thy fled before him. And when the children of Ammon saw
03:07 that the Syrians were fled, then fled they also before Abishai,
03:11 and entered into the city. So Joab returned from the children
03:16 of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem and when the Syrians saw that
03:20 they were smitten before Israel, they gathered themselves
03:22 together. And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians
03:27 that were beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach
03:31 the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.
03:34 And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together,
03:37 and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians
03:40 set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.
03:44 And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew the men
03:48 of 700 chariots of the Syrians, and 40,000 horsemen,
03:52 and smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there.
03:56 And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that
04:00 they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel,
04:03 and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of
04:08 Ammon anymore. We're continuing in the book of 2nd Samuel
04:12 chapter 11. This is the King James Version.
04:16 And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time
04:21 when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his
04:25 servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed
04:29 the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah.
04:31 But David tarried still at Jerusalem. And it came to pass
04:36 in an evening tide, that David arose from off his bed, and
04:39 walked upon the roof of the King's house: and from the roof
04:42 he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful
04:46 to look upon.
04:47 And David sent and inquired after the woman. And one said,
04:51 Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife
04:54 of Uriah the Hittite? And David sent messengers, and took her;
05:00 and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was
05:04 purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house.
05:07 And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said,
05:11 I am with child. And David sent to Joab saying,
05:15 Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David.
05:19 And when Uriah was come unto him, David demanded of him how
05:23 Joab did, and how the people did and how the war prospered.
05:26 And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet.
05:31 And Uriah departed out of the king's house, and there followed
05:35 him a mess of meat from the king. But Uriah slept at the
05:40 door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord,
05:43 and went not down to his house. And when they had told David,
05:48 saying, Uriah went not down unto his house, David said unto
05:52 Uriah, Camest thou not from thy journey? why then didst thou not
05:56 go down unto thine house? And Uriah said unto David, The ark,
06:01 and Israel and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab,
06:06 and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields;
06:09 shall I then go into mine house to eat and to drink and to lie
06:13 with my wife? as thou livest and as thy soul liveth,
06:17 I will not do this thing. And David said to Uriah, Tarry here
06:22 today also, and tomorrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode
06:27 in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow. And when David had
06:29 called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him
06:33 drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the
06:36 servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.
06:40 And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote
06:44 a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. And he wrote
06:49 in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the
06:53 hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten
06:58 and die. And it came to pass, when Joab observed the city,
07:02 that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that valiant
07:05 men were. And the men of the city went out, and fought with
07:09 Joab: and there fell some of the people of the servants of David;
07:13 and Uriah the Hittite died also. Then Joab sent and told David
07:18 all the things concerning the war; and charged the messenger
07:22 saying, When thou has made an end of telling the matters of
07:24 the war unto the king, and if so be that the king's wrath
07:29 arise, and he say unto thee, Wherefore approached ye
07:32 so nigh unto the city when ye did fight? knew ye not that they
07:35 would shoot from the wall? Who smote Abimelech the son of
07:38 Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast a piece of a millstone upon
07:43 him from the wall, that he died in Thebez? why went ye nigh the
07:46 wall? then say thou, Thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
07:52 So the messenger went, and came and shewed David all that Joab
07:56 had sent him for. And the messenger said unto David,
08:00 Surely the men prevailed against us, and came out unto us into
08:03 the field, and we were upon them even unto the entering
08:06 of the gate. And the shooters shot from off the wall upon thy
08:10 servants; and some of the king's servants be dead and thy servant
08:14 Uriah the Hittite is dead also. Then David said unto the
08:18 messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing
08:23 displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another
08:27 make thy battle more strong against the city and overthrow
08:30 it: and encourage thou him. And when the wife of Uriah
08:34 heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned
08:37 for her husband. And when the mourning was past, David sent
08:41 and fetched her to his house, and she became his wife,
08:45 and bare him a son. But the thing that David had done
08:49 displeased the Lord.
08:51 We'll continue now in 2nd Samuel chapter 12,
08:55 This is the King James Version.
08:57 And the Lord sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him,
09:02 and said unto him, There were two men in one city;
09:05 the one rich, and the other poor. The rich man had exceeding
09:10 many flocks and herds: But the poor man had nothing, save
09:14 one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up:
09:18 and it grew up together with him, and with his children;
09:21 it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his own cup, and
09:25 lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter.
09:28 And there came a traveler unto the rich man, and he spared to
09:33 take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the
09:35 wayfaring man that was come unto him;
09:37 but took the poor man's lamb, and dressed it for the man
09:42 that was come to him. And David's anger was greatly
09:46 kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As the Lord
09:49 liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die:
09:52 And he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this
09:56 thing and because he had no pity. And Nathan said to David,
10:01 Thou art the man. Thus saith the Lord God of Israel,
10:06 I annointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee
10:10 out of the hand of Saul; And I gave thee thy master's house,
10:15 and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee
10:19 the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been
10:22 too little, I would moreover have given unto thee
10:25 such and such things. Wherefore hast thou despised
10:29 the commandment of the Lord to do evil in his sight?
10:31 thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword,
10:35 and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him
10:39 with the sword of the children of Ammon. Now therefore
10:43 the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou
10:47 hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to
10:51 be thy wife. Thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will raise up
10:56 evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy
11:00 wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbor,
11:03 and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.
11:07 For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing
11:11 before all Israel, and before the sun. And David said unto
11:16 Nathan, I have sinned against the Lord. And Nathan said unto
11:21 David, The Lord also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die
11:26 Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion
11:32 to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child also that
11:36 is born unto thee shall surely die. And Nathan departed unto
11:41 his house and the Lord struck the child that Uriah's wife bare
11:45 unto David, and it was very sick. David therefore besought
11:50 God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay
11:53 all night upon the earth. And elders of his house arose,
11:57 and went to him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would
12:00 not, neither did he eat bread with them. And it came to pass
12:04 on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants
12:08 of David feared to tell him that the child was dead:
12:10 for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake
12:13 unto him, and he would not hearken unto our voice:
12:16 how will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is
12:19 dead? But when David saw that his servants whispered, David
12:23 perceived that the child was dead: therefore David said unto
12:27 his servants, Is the child dead? And they said, He is dead.
12:32 Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself
12:37 and changed his apparel, and came into the house of the Lord,
12:40 and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he
12:43 required, they set bread before him, and he did eat.
12:46 Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou
12:51 hast done? thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it was
12:54 alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat
12:57 bread. And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted
13:01 and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether God will be
13:04 gracious to me, that the child may live? But now he is dead,
13:09 wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again?
13:12 I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.
13:15 And David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in unto her,
13:19 and lay with her: and she bare a son, and he called his name
13:23 Solomon: and the Lord loved him. And he sent by the hand
13:28 of Nathan the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah,
13:31 because of the Lord. And Joab fought against Rabbah of the
13:35 children of Ammon, and took the royal city. And Joab sent
13:38 messengers to David, and said, I have fought against Rabbah,
13:41 and have taken the city of waters. Now therefore gather
13:44 of the rest of the people together, and encamp against
13:46 the city, and take it: lest I take the city, and it me called
13:50 after my name. And David gathered all the people together
13:53 and went to Rabbah, and fought against it, and took it.
13:56 And he took their king's crown from off his head, the weight
14:00 whereof was a talent of gold with the precious stones:
14:02 And it was set on David's head. And he brought forth the spoil
14:06 of the city in great abundance. And he brought forth the people
14:10 that were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows
14:13 of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through
14:17 the brickkiln: and thus did he unto all the cities
14:21 of the children of Ammon. So David and all the people
14:24 returned unto Jerusalem.
14:26 Please join me again next time when we read the word of God
14:30 together. Until then may God keep us all with His love
14:33 and His grace.
