00:16 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:19 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and today we're going to be reading in 00:22 both 1'st Samuel and 2'nd Samuel the story of God leading 00:26 particularly during the time of David. Before we read, 00:30 let's pray together. Dear God, thank you for these moments 00:36 to come apart and to sit and to hear your word. May we not only 00:40 hear it; but may we do the lessons that you have for each 00:44 of us to learn in our lives. May they be put into practice 00:48 through the power of your Holy Spirit, to bear fruit to your 00:51 glory. We love you and thank you for loving us. Amen. 00:54 I'm reading in 1st Samuel, starting in chapter 31, 00:59 verse 1. This is the King James Version. 01:02 Now the Philistines fought against Israel. 01:05 And the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines and fell 01:09 down slain in Mount Gilboa. And the Philistines followed hard 01:14 upon Saul and upon his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, 01:18 and Abinadab, and Melchishua, Saul's sons. And the battle went 01:24 sore against Saul, and the archers hit him; and he was 01:28 sore wounded of the archers. Then said Saul unto his armor 01:33 bearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; 01:36 lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and 01:40 abuse me. But his armor bearer would not for he was sore afraid 01:44 Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it. 01:48 And when his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, 01:52 he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him. 01:55 So Saul died, and his 3 sons, and his armor bearer, 02:00 and all his men, that same day together. 02:03 And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of 02:06 the valley, and they that were on the other side Jordan, 02:09 saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons 02:13 were dead, they forsook the cities, and fled; 02:16 and the Philistines came and dwelt in them. 02:18 And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines 02:21 came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his 3 sons 02:25 fallen in mount Gilboa. And they cut off his head, and stripped 02:29 off his armor, and sent into the land of the Philistines 02:32 round about, to publish it in the house of their idols, 02:35 and among the people. And they put his armor in the house of 02:40 Ashtaroth: and they fastened his body to the wall of Bethshan 02:43 and when the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead hear of that 02:48 which the Philistines had done to Saul; all the valiant men 02:52 arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul 02:55 and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Bethshan, and came 02:59 to Jaesh, and burnt them there. And the took their bones 03:03 and buried them under a tree at Jabesh, and fasted 7 days. 03:07 Continuing now in the book of 2nd Samuel, chapter 1. 03:13 and this is the King James Version. 03:15 Now it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David 03:20 was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had 03:23 abode 2 days in Ziklag; it came even to pass on the 3rd day, 03:27 that behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his 03:31 clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, 03:35 when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, 03:37 and did obeisance. And David said unto him, From whence 03:41 comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp of Israel 03:45 am I escaped. And David said unto him, How went the matter? 03:49 I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people 03:54 are fled from the battle, and many of the people also 03:57 are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead 04:01 also. And David said unto the young man that told him, 04:04 How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son be dead? 04:10 And the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance 04:14 upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear; and lo, 04:19 the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him. 04:22 And when he looked behind him he saw me, and called unto me. 04:25 And I answered, Here am I. And he said unto me, Who art thou? 04:29 And I answered him, I am an Amalekite. 04:32 He said unto me, again, Stand, I pray thee, upon me, and 04:36 slay me: for anguish is come upon me, because my life is yet 04:40 whole in me. So I stood upon him and slew him, because I was sure 04:45 that he could not live after that he was fallen: 04:48 and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet 04:52 that was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my lord 04:55 Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; 04:59 and likewise all the men that were with him: And they mourned, 05:02 and wept and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan 05:06 his son and for the people of the Lord, and for the house of 05:10 Israel; because they were fallen by the sword. And David said 05:14 unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? 05:16 And he answered, I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite. 05:19 And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch 05:23 forth thine hand to destroy the Lord's anointed? 05:25 And David called one of the young men, and said, 05:28 Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him that he died. 05:32 And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; 05:36 for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, 05:38 I have slain the Lord's anointed. 05:40 And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over 05:45 Jonathan his son: Also he bade them teach the children 05:49 of Judah the use of the bow: behold, it is written 05:52 in the book of Jasher. 05:53 The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places: 05:57 how are the mighty fallen! Tell it not in Gath, publish it not 06:02 in the streets of Askelon; lest the daughters of the 06:06 Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised 06:08 triumph. Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, 06:12 neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of offerings: 06:16 for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, 06:19 the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil. 06:23 >From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, 06:27 the bow of Jonathan turned not back, and the sword of Saul 06:30 returned not empty. Saul and Jonathan were lovely 06:34 and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not 06:37 divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger 06:40 than lions. Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, 06:44 who clothed you in scarlet, with other delights, 06:47 who put on ornaments of gold upon your apparel. 06:50 How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! 06:53 O Jonathan, thou wast slain in thine high places. 06:57 I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: 07:00 very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was 07:05 wonderful, passing the love of women. 07:07 How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished! 07:12 Continuing in 2nd Samuel, chapter 2. 07:16 This is the King James Version. 07:17 And it came to pass after this, that David inquired of the Lord, 07:22 saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? 07:26 And the Lord said unto him, Go up, 07:28 And David said, Whither shall I go up? 07:31 And he said, Unto Hebron. 07:33 So David went up thither, and his two wives also, 07:37 Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal's wife 07:43 the Carmelite. And his men that were with him did David bring up 07:48 every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities 07:51 of Hebron. And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed 07:55 David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, 07:58 saying, That the men of Jabeshgilead were they 08:02 that buried Saul. And David sent messengers unto the men of 08:05 Jabeshgilead, and said unto them, Blest be ye of the Lord, 08:08 that ye have shewed this kindness unto your lord, 08:10 even unto Saul, and have buried him. And now the Lord shew 08:14 kindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you 08:18 this kindness, because ye have done this thing. Therefore now 08:22 let your hands be strengthened, and be ye valiant: 08:25 for your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah 08:29 have anointed me king over them. But Abner the son of Ner, 08:34 captain of Saul's host, took Ishbosheth the son of Saul, 08:38 and brought him over to Mahanaim; and made him king 08:42 over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, 08:45 and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel. 08:48 Ishbosheth Saul's son was forty years old when he began to reign 08:53 over Israel and reigned 2 years. But the house of Judah followed 08:57 David. And the time that David was king in Hebron over the 09:00 house of Judah was seven years and six months. 09:03 And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ishbosheth 09:07 the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon. 09:11 And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, 09:15 went out and met together by the pool of Gibeon: 09:17 and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, 09:20 and the other on the other side of the pool. 09:21 And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men now arise, and play 09:26 before us. And Joab said, Let them arise. 09:29 Then there arose and went over by number 12 of Benjamin, 09:35 which pertained to Ishbosheth the son of Saul, 09:38 and 12 of the servants of David. And they caught every one 09:43 his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow's 09:46 side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place 09:49 was called Helkathhazzuyrim, which is in Gibeon. 09:53 And there was a very sore battle that day; and Abner was beaten, 09:57 and the men of Israel, before the servants of David. 09:59 And there were three sons of Zeruiah there, Joab and Abishai, 10:05 and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe. 10:10 And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not 10:15 to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner. 10:18 Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Art thou Asahel? 10:22 And he answered, I am. And Abner said to him, 10:26 Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, 10:28 and lay thee hold on one of the young men, 10:30 and take thee his armor. But Asahel would not turn aside 10:34 from following of him. And Abner said again to Asahel, 10:38 Turn thee aside from following me: 10:40 wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? 10:42 how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother? 10:45 Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner 10:51 with the hinder end of the spear smote him under the 5th rib, 10:55 that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, 10:58 and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many 11:03 as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died 11:06 stood still. Joab also and Abishai pursued after Abner: 11:11 and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, 11:14 that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon. 11:17 And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together 11:21 after Abner, and became one troop, and stood on the top 11:25 of an hill. Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword 11:29 devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness 11:32 in the latter end? how long shall it be then, 11:35 ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren? 11:38 And Joab said, As God liveth, unless thou hadst spoken 11:43 surely then in the morning the people had gone up every one 11:45 from following his brother. So Joab blew a trumpet, 11:49 and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more 11:52 neither fought they any more. And Abner and his men walked 11:57 all that night through the plain, and passed over Jordan, 12:00 and went through all Bithron, and they came to Mahanaim. 12:04 and Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered 12:08 all the people together, there lacked of David's servants 12:12 nineteen men and Asahel. But the servants of David 12:16 had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner's men, 12:18 so that three hundred and threescore men died. 12:21 And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre 12:24 of his father, which was in Bethlehem. And Joab and his men 12:28 went all night, and they came to Hebron at break of day. 12:31 We're continuing now in 2nd Samuel, chapter 3, 12:35 and this is the King James Version. 12:37 Now there was a long war between the house of Saul and the house 12:42 of David: but David waxed stronger and stronger, 12:46 and the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker. 12:49 And unto David were sons born in Hebron: and his firstborn 12:54 was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; and his second, 13:00 Chileab, of Abigail the wife of Abigail the wife of Nabal 13:02 the Carmelite; and the third, Absalom the son of Maacah 13:08 the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur; and the fourth, 13:11 Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah 13:15 the son of Abital; and the 6th, Ithream by Eglah David's wife. 13:20 These were born to David in Hebron. And it came to pass, 13:25 while there was war between the house of Saul 13:27 and the house of David, that Abner made himself strong 13:31 for the house of Saul. And Saul had a concubine, whose name 13:35 was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah: 13:37 And Ishbosheth said to Abner, wherefore hast thou gone in 13:42 unto my father's concubine? Then was Abner very wroth 13:46 for the words of Ishbosheth, and said, Am I a dog's head, 13:49 which against Judah do shew kindness this day unto the house 13:52 of Saul thy father, to his brethren, and to his friends, 13:55 and have not delivered thee into the hand of David, 13:58 that thou chargest me today with a fault concerning this 14:01 woman? So do God to Abner, and more also, except, as the Lord 14:05 hath sworn to David, even so I do to him; to translate 14:09 the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the throne 14:11 of David over Israel and over Judah, 14:13 from Dan even to Beersheba. And he could not answer Abner 14:18 a word again, because he feared him. 14:21 Thank you for being with me today to read the story 14:25 of David and we'll continue the next time we're gathered 14:29 together. Until then, may God bless and keep us all, 14:32 by His grace and mercy. Goodbye. |
