00:16 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and today we're going to finish 00:21 in the book of Ruth and move on to First Samuel. 00:23 But before we start together, Let's pray. 00:26 Dear God, please be with us now as we read the next few 00:31 chapters. And may the story of history come alive in our life 00:37 to your glory. Write you word on our hearts 00:41 and may it bear fruit. We love you so much. 00:43 And thank you for loving us. Amen 00:45 We're reading in the book of Ruth the story of how she 00:50 came from Moab, left her family and went with her mother in law, 00:54 Naomi, to a foreign country; to be with her mother in law 00:58 and to take care of her. And because of Ruth's kindness 01:02 to her mother in law, and her obedience to her, God honored 01:06 Ruth through her marriage to Boaz. And out of their family 01:11 Jesus eventually was born, in the line of David. 01:14 We're going to read that last part of Ruth, chapter four, 01:17 and beginning with verse 16. This is the King James Version. 01:20 And Naomi took the child and laid it in her bosom and became 01:26 nurse unto it. And the women, her neighbors, gave it a name, 01:30 saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called 01:34 his name Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David. 01:39 Now these are the generations of Pharez: Pharez begat Hezron, 01:45 And Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab, 01:49 and Amminadab begat Nahshon, Nahshon begat Salmon, and 01:53 Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed, and Obed begat 01:58 Jesse, and Jesse begat David. 02:01 Continuing now in the old testament, the first book of 02:05 Samuel, chapter one. This is the King James Version. 02:09 Now there was a certain man of Ramathaimzophim, of mount 02:16 Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, 02:20 the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, 02:24 an Ephrathite: and he had two wives, the name of the one 02:28 was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: 02:31 and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. 02:35 And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to 02:40 sacrifice unto the Lord of hosts in Shiloh. 02:43 And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, 02:46 the priests of the Lord were there. And when the time was 02:49 that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, 02:52 and to all her sons and her daughters, portions: 02:55 But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; 02:58 for he loved Hannah: but the Lord had shut up her womb. 03:02 And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, 03:08 because the Lord had shut up her womb. 03:10 And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house 03:15 of the Lord, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, 03:18 and did not eat. Then said Elkanah her husband to her, 03:23 Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? 03:28 and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee 03:32 than ten sons? So Hannah rose up after they had eaten 03:36 in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. 03:38 Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple 03:43 of the Lord. And she was in bitterness of soul, 03:47 and prayed unto the Lord, and wept sore. And she vowed a vow, 03:51 and said, O Lord of hosts, if thou wilt indeed 03:56 look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, 03:59 and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give 04:02 unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him 04:06 unto the Lord all the days of his life, and there shall 04:11 no razor come upon his head. And it came to pass, 04:14 as she continued praying before the Lord, 04:16 that Eli marked her mouth. Now Hannah, 04:20 she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice 04:23 was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been 04:26 drunken. And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? 04:30 put away thy wine from thee. And Hannah answered and said, 04:34 No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk 04:38 neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul 04:42 before the Lord. Count not thine handmaid for a daughter 04:46 of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint 04:49 and grief have I spoken hitherto. 04:52 And Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel 04:56 grant the thy petition that thou has asked of him. 05:00 And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace 05:04 in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, 05:07 and her countenance was no more sad. 05:09 And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before 05:12 the Lord and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: 05:16 And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the Lord remembered 05:19 her. Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about 05:24 after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called 05:28 his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the Lord. 05:33 And the man Elkanah, and all his house went up to offer 05:37 unto the Lord the yearly sacrifice, and his vow. 05:40 But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, 05:44 I will not go up until the child be weaned, and then I will 05:49 bring him, that he may appear before the Lord, and there abide 05:53 forever. And Elkanah her husband, said unto her, 05:56 Do what seemeth thee good; tarry until thou have weaned him; 06:00 only the Lord establish his word. So the woman abode, 06:04 and gave her son suck until she weaned him. 06:06 And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, 06:10 with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle 06:13 of wine, and brought him unto the house of the Lord in Shiloh: 06:17 and the child was young. And they slew a bullock 06:21 and brought the child to Eli. And she said, Oh my lord, 06:25 as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood 06:29 by thee here, praying unto the Lord. 06:32 For this child I prayed; and the Lord hath given me 06:37 my petition which I asked of him: Therefore also I have 06:41 lent him to the Lord: as long as he liveth he shall be lent 06:46 to the Lord. And he worshipped the Lord there. 06:49 Continuing now in the book of First Samuel, chapter two, 06:54 This is the King James Version. 06:55 And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the Lord, 07:01 mine horn is exalted in the Lord: my mouth is enlarged 07:04 over mine enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation. 07:08 There is none holy as the Lord: for there is none beside thee: 07:12 neither is there any rock like our God. 07:15 Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy 07:21 come out of your mouth: for the Lord is a God of knowledge, 07:25 and by him actions are weighed. The bows of the mighty men 07:30 are broken, and they that stumbled 07:32 are girded with strength. They that were full 07:36 have hired out themselves for bread; and they that were hungry 07:40 ceased: so that the barren hath born seven; 07:44 and she that hath many children is waxed feeble. 07:47 The Lord killeth, and maketh alive: 07:50 He bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up. 07:54 The Lord maketh poor, and maketh rich: 07:57 He bringeth low, and lifteth up. 08:00 He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, 08:04 and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, 08:06 to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne 08:10 of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the Lord's, 08:13 and He hath set the world upon them. 08:16 He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked 08:20 shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail 08:26 The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken to pieces; 08:29 out of heaven shall he thunder upon them: the Lord shall judge 08:34 the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength 08:37 unto his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed. 08:41 And Elkanah went to Ramah to his house. 08:45 And the child did minister unto the Lord before Eli the priest. 08:48 Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; 08:52 they knew not the Lord. And the priests' custom with the people 08:57 was, that, when any man offered sacrifice, the priest's servant 09:00 came, while the flesh was in seething, with a fleshhook 09:04 of three teeth in his hand; and he struck it into the pan, 09:07 or kettle, or caldron, or pot; all that the fleshhook brought 09:11 up the priest took for himself. So they did in Shiloh, 09:15 unto all the Israelites that came thither. 09:17 Also before they burnt the fat, the priest's servant came, 09:21 and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to roast 09:24 for the priest; for he will not have sodden flesh of thee, 09:27 but raw. And if any man said unto him, Let them not fail 09:32 to burn the fat presently, and then take as much as thy soul 09:35 desireth; then he would answer him, Nay; but thou shalt give it 09:40 me now: and if not, I will take it by force. 09:42 Wherefore the sin of the young men was very great 09:48 before the Lord: for men abhorred the offering 09:51 of the Lord. But Samuel ministered before the Lord, 09:55 being a child, girded with a linen ephod. 09:58 Moreover his mother made him a little coat, 10:01 and brought it to him from year to year, 10:03 when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly 10:06 sacrifice. And Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, 10:10 and said, The Lord give thee seed of this woman for the loan 10:14 which is lent to the Lord. And they went unto their own home. 10:18 And the Lord visited Hannah, so that she conceived, 10:21 and bear three sons and two daughters. 10:24 And the child Samuel grew before the Lord. 10:28 Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto all 10:33 Israel; and how they lay with the women that assembled 10:36 at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. 10:39 And he said unto them, Why do ye such things? 10:42 for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people. 10:45 Nay, my sons; for it is no good report that I hear: 10:48 ye make the Lord's people to transgress. 10:51 If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but 10:55 if a man sin against the Lord, who shall entreat for him? 10:59 Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto the voice of their 11:03 father, because the Lord would slay them. 11:05 And the child Samuel grew on and was in favor both with the Lord, 11:10 and also with men. And there came a man of God unto Eli, 11:14 and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Did I plainly appear 11:18 unto the house of thy father, when they were in Egypt 11:20 in Pharaoh's house? And did I choose out of all the tribes 11:24 of Israel to be my priest, to offer upon mine altar, 11:28 to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? 11:31 and did I give unto the house of thy father all the offerings 11:34 made by fire of the children of Israel? 11:37 Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, 11:41 which I have commanded in my habitation; and honourest 11:45 thy sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest 11:50 of all the offerings of Israel my people? 11:52 Wherefore the Lord God of Israel saith, I said indeed 11:57 that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk 12:00 before me forever: but now the Lord saith, Be it far from me; 12:06 for them that honour me I will honour, 12:08 and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed. 12:12 Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm, 12:16 and the arm of thy father's house, that there shall not 12:19 be an old man in thine house. And thou shalt see an enemy 12:22 in my habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give 12:25 Israel and there shall not be an old man in thine house forever. 12:29 And the name of thine, whom I shall not cut off 12:32 mine altar, shall be to consume thine eyes, and to grieve 12:37 thine heart: and all the increase of thine house 12:40 shall die in the flower of their age. And this shall be a sign 12:44 unto thee, that shall come upon thy two sons, 12:47 on Hophni and Pninehas; in one day they shall die both of them. 12:52 And I will raise me up a faithful priest, 12:55 that shall do according to that which is in mine heart 12:58 and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house; 13:02 and he shall walk before mine anointed for ever. 13:06 And it shall come to pass, that every one who is left 13:09 in thine house shall come and crouch to him for a piece 13:13 of silver and a morsel of bread and shall say, Put me, 13:16 I pray the into one of the priests' offices, 13:19 that I may eat a piece of bread. 13:22 Continuing in 1 Samuel, chapter three. 13:25 And the child Samuel ministered unto the Lord before Eli. 13:29 And the word of the Lord was precious in those days; 13:32 there was no open vision. And it came to pass at that time, 13:37 when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began 13:40 to wax dim, that he could not see; and ere the lamp of God 13:45 went out in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was, 13:48 and Samuel was laid down to sleep; 13:50 That the Lord called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I. 13:54 And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. 13:58 And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went 14:04 and lay down. And the Lord called yet again, Samuel. 14:08 And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; 14:12 for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; 14:16 lie down again. - Thank you for joining with me today 14:20 to read the word of God. We'll pick up the story of Samuel 14:24 the next time we're together. But until then may God tune 14:27 our ears to hear him as he speaks to us and our hearts 14:30 to be quick to answer him. Thank you. God bless. |
