00:16 Hello, and welcome to HIS WORDS ARE LIFE
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and thank you for joining with me today, 00:21 to read the story of Ruth. Before we start, Let's pray. 00:25 Dear God, thank you again for this time apart in your presence 00:29 Please send the Holy Spirit as we read, to show us your 00:33 great love for us and to put into our hearts 00:36 a greater love for you. We love you, as imperfectly as we do, 00:41 and we want to serve you better, please show us how. Amen. 00:46 Reading in the book of Ruth, in the King James Version, 00:50 chapter 1. - Now it came to pass in the days when the judges 00:54 ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man 00:58 of Bethlehem-judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, 01:02 he, and his wife, and his two sons. And the name of the man 01:06 was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, 01:10 and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, 01:14 Ephrathites of Bethlehem-judah. And they came into the country 01:19 of Moab, and continued there. And Elimelech, Naomi's husband, 01:23 died; and she was left, and her two sons. 01:25 And they took them wives of the women of Moab; 01:29 the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other, Ruth: 01:33 and they dwelled there about ten years. 01:35 And Mahlon and Chilion died, both of them; 01:40 and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband. 01:44 Then she arose with her daughters in law, 01:47 that she might return from the country of Moab: 01:50 for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the Lord 01:53 had visited his people in giving them bread. 01:56 Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, 01:59 and her two daughters in law with her; and they went 02:02 on the way to return unto the land of Judah. 02:05 And Naomi said unto her two daughters in law, 02:09 Go, return each to her mother's house: the Lord deal kindly with 02:15 you as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me. 02:18 The Lord grant you that ye may find rest, each of you, 02:23 in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them; 02:26 and they lifted up their voice, and wept and they said unto her, 02:30 surely we will return with thee unto thy people. 02:34 And Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: 02:38 why will ye go with me? Are there yet any more sons 02:42 in my womb, that they may be your husbands? Turn again, my 02:46 daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have an husband. 02:50 If I should say, I have hope, if I should have an husband 02:54 also tonight, and should also bear sons; would ye tarry 02:58 for them till they were grown? would ye stay for them 03:01 having husbands? nay, my daughters. 03:04 for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the 03:08 Lord is gone out against me. And they lifted up their voice, 03:11 and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; 03:16 but Ruth clave unto her. And she said, Behold thy sister in law 03:23 is gone back unto her people, and to her gods: return thou 03:27 after thy sister in law. And Ruth said, Entreat me not 03:33 to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: 03:37 for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, 03:41 I will lodge: thy people shall be my people and thy God my God: 03:48 where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: 03:52 the Lord do so to me, and more also, if aught but death 03:57 part thee and me. When she saw that she was steadfastly minded 04:04 to go with her, then she left speaking unto her. 04:07 So they two went until they came to Bethlehem, 04:10 And it came to pass, when they were come to Bethlehem, 04:13 that all the city was moved about them, and they said, 04:16 Is this Naomi? And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, 04:20 call me Mara: for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me 04:24 I went out full, and the Lord hath brought me home again 04:27 empty why then call ye me Naomi, seeing the Lord hath testified 04:32 against me and the Almighty has afflicted me? So Naomi returned 04:36 and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter in law, with her, 04:39 which returned out of the country of Moab, 04:40 and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest. 04:45 We're reading in Ruth chapter 2, 04:48 and this is the King James Version. 04:49 And Naomi had a kinsman of her husband's a mighty man of wealth 04:53 of the family of Elimelech; and his name was Boaz. 04:56 And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi, 04:59 Let me now go to the field and glean ears of corn after him 05:03 in whose sight I shall find grace. And she said unto her, 05:07 Go my daughter. And she went, and came, and gleaned 05:11 in the field after the reapers: and her hap was to light on 05:14 a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was 05:17 of the kindred of Elimelech. And behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem 05:21 and said unto the reapers, The Lord be with you. 05:23 And they answered him, The Lord bless thee. 05:26 Then said Boaz unto his servant that was set over the reapers, 05:30 Whose damsel is this? And the servant that was set over 05:33 the reapers answered and said, It is the Moabitish damsel 05:37 that came back with Naomi out of the country of Moab: 05:39 And she said, I pray you, let me glean and gather 05:42 after the reapers among the sheaves: so she came, and 05:44 hath continued even from the morning until now, 05:46 that she tarried a little in the house. Then said Boaz unto Ruth, 05:51 Hearest thou not, my daughter? Go not to glean in another field 05:56 neither go from hence, but abide her fast by my maidens: 06:00 Let thine eyes be on the field that they do reap, and go thou 06:04 after them: have I not charged the young men that they not 06:07 touch thee? and when thou art athirst, go unto the vessels, 06:11 and drink of that which the young men have drawn. 06:13 Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, 06:16 and said unto him, Why have I found grace in thine eyes, 06:20 that thou shouldest take knowledge of me, 06:22 seeing I am a stranger? And Boaz answered and said unto her, 06:27 It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy 06:31 mother in law since the death of thine husband: 06:34 and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, 06:37 and the land of thy nativity, and art come unto a people 06:40 which thou knewest not heretofore. 06:42 The Lord recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee 06:47 of the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to 06:50 trust. Then she said, Let me find favour in thy sight, 06:54 my lord; for that thou hast comforted me, 06:57 and for that thou hast spoken friendly unto thine handmaid, 07:00 though I be not like unto one of thine handmaidens. 07:03 And Boaz said unto her, At mealtime come thou hither, 07:08 and eat of the bread, and dip thy morsel in the vinegar. 07:11 And she sat beside the reapers: And he reached her parched corn, 07:16 and she did eat, and was sufficed, and left. 07:19 And when she was risen up to glean, Boaz commanded his young 07:22 men saying, Let her glean even among the sheaves, 07:25 and reproach her not; and let fall also some of the handfuls 07:30 of purpose for her, and leave them, that she may glean them, 07:34 and rebuke her not. So she gleaned in the field until even 07:38 and beat out that she had gleaned: and it was about an 07:41 ephah of barley. And she took it up, and went into the city: 07:44 and her mother in law saw what she had gleaned and she brought 07:47 forth, and gave to her that she had reserved 07:50 after she was sufficed. And her mother in law said unto her, 07:54 Where hast thou gleaned today? and where wroughtest thou? 07:58 blessed be he that did take knowledge of thee. 08:02 And she shewed her mother in law with whom she had wrought, 08:05 The man's name with whom I wrought today is Boaz. 08:09 And Naomi said unto her daughter in law, Blessed be he 08:13 of the Lord, who hath not left off his kindness to the living 08:16 and to the dead. And Naomi said unto her, The man is near of kin 08:21 unto us, one of our next kinsmen. 08:23 And Ruth the Moabitess said, He said unto me also, 08:27 Thou shalt keep fast by my young men, until they have ended all 08:30 my harvest. And Naomi said unto Ruth, her daughter in law, 08:34 It is good, my daughter, that thou go out with his maidens, 08:39 that they meet thee not in any other field. So she kept fast by 08:43 the maidens of Boaz to glean unto the end of barley harvest 08:47 and of wheat harvest; and dwelt with her mother in law. 08:50 We're reading in the book of Ruth, chapter 3, and 08:53 this is the King James Version. 08:54 Then Naomi her mother in law said unto her, My daughter, 08:59 shall I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee? 09:03 And now is not Boaz of our kindred, with whose maidens 09:07 thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley tonight in the threshing 09:11 floor. Wash thy self therefore, and anoint thee, 09:14 and put thy raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the floor: 09:17 but make not thyself known unto the man, until he shall have 09:21 done eating and drinking. And it shall be, when he lieth down, 09:25 that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie, 09:27 and thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, 09:29 and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do. 09:32 And she said unto her, All that thou sayest unto me I will do. 09:38 And she went down unto the floor and did according to all that 09:42 her mother in law bade her. And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, 09:46 and his heart was merry, he went to lie down 09:48 at the end of the heap of corn. And she came softly and 09:51 uncovered his feet and laid her down. 09:53 And it came to pass at midnight that the man was afraid and 09:57 turned himself, and, behold, a woman lay at his feet. 10:00 And he said, who art thou? And she answered, I am Ruth, 10:04 thy handmaid. Spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid: 10:08 For thou art a near kinsman. And he said, Blest be thou 10:13 of the Lord, my daughter, for thou hast showed more kindness 10:16 in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou 10:20 followedst not young men, whether poor or rich. 10:22 And now my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou 10:27 requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that 10:30 thou art a virtuous woman. And now it is true that I am 10:35 thy near kinsman: howbeit there is a kinsman nearer than I. 10:38 Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, 10:41 that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinsman, 10:44 well; let him do the kinsman's part: but if he will not 10:48 do the part of a kinsman, to thee, then will I do the part 10:51 of a kinsman to thee, as the Lord liveth lie down 10:55 until the morning. And she lay at his feet until the morning: 10:58 and she rose up before one could know another, 11:01 And he said, Let it not be known that a woman came into the floor 11:04 Also he said, Bring the veil that thou hast upon thee, 11:09 and hold it. And when she held it, he measured six measures 11:12 of barley and laid it on her: and she went into the city. 11:16 And when she came to her mother in law, she said, Who art thou? 11:20 my daughter? and she told her all that the man had done to her 11:23 and she said, These six measures of barley gave he me; 11:27 for he said to me, Go not empty unto thy mother in law. 11:30 Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know 11:34 how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, 11:37 until he have finished the thing this day. 11:38 And Ruth chapter 4, continuing the story 11:43 in the King James Version. 11:44 Then went Boaz up to the gate, and sat him down there: and, 11:48 behold the kinsman of whom Boaz spake came by; unto whom he said 11:52 Ho, such a one! turn aside, sit down here. And he turned aside, 11:56 and sat down. And he took 10 men of the elders of the city, 11:59 and said, Sit ye down here. And they sat down. And he said 12:03 unto the kinsman, Naomi, that is come again out of the country 12:07 of Moab, selleth a parcel of land which was our brother 12:11 Elimelech's: And I thought to advertise thee, saying, 12:15 Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders 12:18 of my people. If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it: 12:21 But if thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: 12:25 for there is none to redeem it beside thee; and I am after thee 12:29 And he said, I will redeem it. 12:32 Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of 12:37 Naomi, thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, 12:40 the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead 12:42 upon his inheritance. And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem it 12:47 for myself, lest I mar mine own inheritance: redeem thou 12:50 my right to thyself; for I cannot redeem it. 12:53 Now this was the manner in former time in Israel 12:57 concerning redeeming and concerning changing, 12:59 for to confirm all things; a man plucked off his shoe, 13:02 and gave it to his neighbor: and this was a testimony in Israel. 13:05 Therefore the kinsman said unto Boaz, Buy it for thee. 13:09 So he drew off his shoe. And Boaz said unto the elders, 13:13 and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day that 13:16 I have bought all that was Elimelech's, and all that was 13:18 Chilion's and Mahlon's, of the hand of Naomi. 13:21 Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I 13:24 purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead 13:27 upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off 13:30 from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: 13:33 Ye are witnesses this day, and all the people that were 13:37 in the gate and the elders, said, We are witnesses. 13:39 The Lord make the woman that is come into thine house 13:43 like Rachael and Like Leah, which two did build the house 13:46 of Israel: and do thou worthily in Ephratah, and be famous 13:49 in Bethlehem: And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, 13:53 whom Tamar bare unto Judah, of the seed which the Lord 13:56 shall give the of this young woman. So Boaz took Ruth, 13:59 and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, 14:02 the Lord gave her conception, and she bare a son. 14:04 And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the Lord, 14:08 which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, 14:10 that his name may be famous in Israel. And he shall be 14:14 unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thine 14:18 old age: for thy daughter in law which loveth thee, 14:21 which is better to thee than 7 sons, hath borne him. 14:25 Thank you for being with me today to read this beautiful 14:28 story of Ruth. Until next time, May God keep us all in his care. 14:32 Good bye. |
