00:15 Hi, and welcome to HIS WORDS ARE LIFE.
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer and today we're reading in the book of Judges
00:21 and Jephthah is reviewing with the king of Ammon
00:28 sort of a narrative of Israel as they came from Egypt
00:33 to the promised land and the different parts of
00:35 the wilderness that they passed through
00:37 and how they were treated in those parts.
00:39 But before we continue, let's pray together.
00:41 Dear Lord, thank you that in the wildernesses that we
00:46 pass through, you are always with us and that you lead us
00:49 today as surely as you led the children of Israel.
00:51 As we read your word today, please lead us to as deeper
00:56 understanding of you. We want to know you more. We need you.
01:01 Thank you for loving us. We love you so much. Amen.
01:04 We're picking up on Judges, chapter 11, and verse 20
01:11 But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast:
01:16 but Sihon gathered all his people together,
01:19 and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
01:22 And the Lord God of Israel delivered Sihon and
01:26 all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them:
01:29 so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites
01:32 the inhabitants of that country. And they possessed all the
01:35 coasts of the Amorites from Arnon even unto Jabbok,
01:38 and from the wilderness even unto Jordan.
01:41 So now the Lord God of Israel, hath dispossessed the Amorites
01:45 from before his people, Israel, and shouldest thou possess it?
01:49 Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee
01:55 to possess? So whomsoever the Lord our God shall drive out
01:59 from before us, then will we possess. And now
02:04 art thou anything better than Balak the son of Zippor,
02:08 king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel,
02:10 or did he ever fight against them, while Israel dwelt
02:13 in Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns,
02:16 the cities that be along by the coasts of Arnon, 300 years?
02:20 why therefore did ye not recover them within that time?
02:24 Wherefore I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me
02:28 wrong to war against me: the Lord, the judge, be judge
02:34 this day between the children of Israel and the children of
02:36 Ammon. Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened
02:41 not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.
02:43 Then the spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah,
02:46 and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh
02:50 of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead, he passed over unto
02:53 the children of Ammon. And Jephthah vowed a vow
02:57 unto the Lord and said, If thou shalt without fail
03:01 deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands, then it shall
03:05 be that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to
03:08 meet me when I return in peace from the children of Ammon,
03:11 shall surely be the Lord's and I wilt offer it up for a burnt
03:15 offering. So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon
03:19 to fight against them; and the Lord delivered them
03:21 into his hands. And he smote them from Aroer, even till thou
03:25 come to Minnith, even 20 cities, and unto the plain of
03:28 the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of
03:33 Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.
03:36 And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and behold,
03:40 his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels
03:43 and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had
03:48 neither son nor daughter. And it came to pass, when he saw her
03:52 that he rent his clothes and said, Alas, my daughter!
03:57 thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them
04:00 that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the Lord,
04:03 and I cannot go back. And she said unto him, My father,
04:07 if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the Lord, do to me
04:11 according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth;
04:14 forasmuch as the Lord hath taken vengeance for thee of thine
04:18 enemies, even of the children of Ammon. And she said
04:22 unto her father, Let this thing be done for me. Let me alone
04:26 two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains,
04:29 and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows. And he said, Go.
04:33 And he sent her away for two months: and she went
04:36 with her companions, and bewailed her virginity
04:38 upon the mountains. And it came to pass at the end of
04:41 two months, that she returned unto her father, who did
04:45 with her according to his vow which he had vowed:
04:47 and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel,
04:52 that the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament
04:55 the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite 4 days in a year.
04:59 We're continuing in the book of Judges, chapter 12.
05:03 And this is the King James Version.
05:05 And the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together,
05:10 and went northward, and said unto Jephthah, Wherefore
05:14 passedst thou over to fight against the children of Ammon,
05:16 and didst not call us to go with thee? we will burn thine house
05:20 upon thee with fire. And Jephthah said unto them,
05:23 I and my people were at great strife with the children
05:27 of Ammon: and when I called you, ye delivered me not out of their
05:31 hands. And when I saw that ye delivered me not, I put my life
05:35 in my hand: and passed over against the children of Ammon,
05:37 and the Lord delivered them into my hand:
05:40 wherefore then are ye come up unto me this day,
05:44 to fight against me? Then Jephthah gathered together
05:48 all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim:
05:50 and the men of Gilead, smote Ephraim,
05:53 because they said, Ye Gileadites are fugitives of Ephraim
05:57 among the Ephraimites, and among the Manassites.
06:00 And the Gileadites took the passages of Jordan
06:05 before the Ephraimites: and it was so that when those
06:08 Ephraimites which were escaped said, Let me go over;
06:12 that the men of Gilead said unto him, Art thou and Ephraimite?
06:16 If he said, Nay; then said they unto him, Say now Shibboleth:
06:22 and he said Sibboleth: for he could not frame to pronounce
06:27 it right. Then they took him, and slew him at the passages
06:30 of Jordan: and there fell at that time of the Ephraimites
06:34 forty and two thousand. And Jephthath judged Israel 6 years.
06:39 Then died Jephthath the Gileadite, and was buried
06:43 in on e of the cities of Gilead. And after him Ibzan of Bethlehem
06:48 judged Israel. And he had 30 sons, and 30 daughters,
06:52 whom he sent abroad, and took in thirty daughters from abroad
06:56 for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years.
06:59 Then died Izban and was buried at Bethlehem.
07:03 And After him Elon, a Zebulonite judged Israel; and he judged
07:09 Israel 10 years. And Elon the Zebulonite died, and was buried
07:14 in Aijalon in the country of Zebulun. And after him
07:18 Abdon the son of Hillel, a Pirathonite, judged Israel.
07:22 And he had forty sons and thirty nephews, that rode on
07:26 threescore and ten ass colts: and he judged Israel 8 years.
07:31 And Abdon the son of Hillel, the Pirathonite died,
07:36 and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim,
07:39 in the mount of the Amalekites.
07:41 We're continuing with Judges, chapter thirteen,
07:45 and this is the King James Version.
07:47 And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the
07:53 Lord; and the Lord delivered them into the hand of the
07:56 Philistines 40 years. And there was a certain man of Zorah
08:00 of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah;
08:04 and his wife was barren, and bare not. And the angel
08:09 of the Lord appeared unto the woman, and said unto her,
08:11 Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt
08:17 conceive, and bear a son. Now therefore beware, I pray thee,
08:21 and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean
08:26 thing: For, lo, thou shalt conceive and bear a son;
08:30 and no razor shall come on his head:
08:32 for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God
08:36 from the womb and he shall begin to deliver Israel
08:39 out of the hand of the Philistines.
08:41 Then the woman came and told her husband, saying,
08:44 a man of God came unto me, and his countenance
08:47 was like the countenance of
08:48 an angel of God, very terrible: but I asked him not whence
08:51 he was, neither told he me his name:
08:54 But he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear
08:58 a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, neither eat
09:02 any unclean thing: for the child shall be a Nazarite to God
09:05 from the womb to the day of his death. Then Manoah entreated
09:09 the Lord, and said, O my Lord, let the man of God which
09:13 thou didst send come again unto us, and teach us what we shall
09:16 do unto the child that shall be born. And God hearkened
09:21 to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again unto
09:25 the woman as she sat in the field: but Manoah her husband
09:29 was not with her. And the woman made haste and ran,
09:32 and shewed her husband, and said unto him, Behold, the man
09:36 hath appeared unto me, that came unto me the other day.
09:38 And Manoah arose, and went after his wife,
09:42 and came to the man and said unto him, Art thou the man
09:45 that spakest unto the woman? And he said, I am. And Manoah said,
09:51 Now let thy words come to pass. How shall we order the child,
09:56 and how shall we do unto him? And the angel of the Lord said
10:00 unto Manoah, Of all that I said unto the woman let her beware.
10:04 She may not eat of any thing that cometh of the vine,
10:07 neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any
10:11 unclean thing: all that I commanded her let her observe.
10:15 And Manoah said unto the angel of the Lord,
10:18 I pray thee, let us detain thee, until we shall have made ready
10:22 a kid for thee. And the angel of the Lord said unto Manoah,
10:25 Though thou detain me, I will not eat of thy bread:
10:28 and if thou wilt offer a burnt offering, thou must offer it
10:32 unto the Lord. For Manoah knew not that he was an angel
10:36 of the Lord. And Manoah said unto the angel of the Lord,
10:40 What is thy name, that when thy sayings come to pass we may do
10:44 the honour? And the angel of the Lord said unto him, Why askest
10:49 thou thus after my name, seeing it is secret?
10:52 So Manoah took a kid with a meat offering, and offered
10:55 it upon a rock unto the Lord: and the angel did wonderously;
11:01 and Manoah and his wife looked on. For it came to pass,
11:05 when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar,
11:08 that the angel of the Lord ascended in the flame
11:12 of the altar. And Manoah and his wife looked on it, and fell on
11:17 their faces to the ground. But the angel of the Lord did no
11:21 more appear to Manoah and to his wife. Then Manoah knew that
11:26 he was an angel of the Lord. And Manoah said unto his wife,
11:31 We shall surely die, because we have seen God. But his wife said
11:36 unto him, If the Lord were pleased to kill us,
11:39 he would not have received a burnt offering and a meat
11:42 offering at our hands, neither would he have shewed us
11:45 all these things, nor would as at this time have told us
11:49 such things as these. And the woman bare a son,
11:54 and called his name Samson: and the child grew,
11:57 and the Lord blessed him. And the spirit of the Lord began
12:01 to move him at times in the camp of Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol
12:06 We're continuing in the book of Judges, chapter 14,
12:09 and this is the King James Version.
12:11 And Samson went down to Timnath, and saw a woman in Timnath
12:16 of the daughters of the Philistines. And he came up,
12:19 and told his father and his mother, and said,
12:21 I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of
12:24 the Philistines: now therefore get her for me to wife.
12:27 Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never
12:32 a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all
12:34 my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised
12:38 Philistines? And Samson said unto his father, Get her for me;
12:44 for she pleaseth me well. But his father and his mother
12:48 knew not that it was of the Lord that he sought an occasion
12:52 against the Philistines? for at that time the Philistines had
12:55 dominion over Israel. Then went Samson down, and his father
13:00 and his mother, to Timnath, and came to the vineyards
13:03 of Timnath: and behold a young lion roared against him.
13:06 And the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and he rent
13:11 him as he would have rent a kid, and he had nothing in his hand:
13:15 but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.
13:18 And he went down, and talked to the woman; and she pleased
13:21 Samson well. And after a time he returned to take her,
13:25 and he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion: and behold,
13:28 there was a swarm of bees and honey in the carcass of the lion
13:33 and he took thereof in his hands and went on eating, and came
13:37 to his father and mother, and he gave them, and they did eat:
13:39 but he told not them that he had taken the honey
13:42 out of the carcass of the lion. So his father went down
13:46 unto the woman: and Samson made there a feast; for so used
13:49 the young men to do. And it came to pass, when they saw him,
13:53 that they brought 30 companions to be with him. And Samson said
13:57 unto them, I will now put forth a riddle unto you: if ye can
14:02 certainly declare it me within the seven days of the feast,
14:05 and find it out, then I will give you thirty sheets
14:09 and thirty change of garments: But if ye cannot declare it me,
14:13 then shall ye give me 30 sheets and 30 change of garments.
14:19 And they said unto him, Put forth thy riddle,
14:22 that we may hear it. We'll pick up the story
14:25 the next time we're together, and until then, thank you for
14:28 joining with me, and my God keep us all by his grace
14:31 and mercy. Goodbye.
