00:17 Hi, and welcome to His Words Are Life.
00:19 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and thank you for joining with me today to 00:21 read the word of God together. 00:23 Before we start let's pray. 00:24 Dear Lord, thank You so much for Your merciful loving 00:29 kindness to each one of us. 00:30 Please send Your Holy Spirit now to open our minds 00:33 as we read Your word. 00:34 We love You so much. 00:35 Thank You for loving us. 00:36 Amen. 00:38 When we were last together we were reading in the book of 00:40 Joshua, and the children of Israel had just passed over 00:43 Jordan on dry ground. 00:44 And Joshua has called one man out of each of the twelve tribes 00:49 and instructed them to gather up, each of them, a stone. 00:52 We're going to pick up in Joshua, chapter 4, verse 6. 00:57 That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask 01:01 their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by 01:04 these stones? 01:05 Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were 01:09 cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; when it 01:11 passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: 01:14 and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of 01:17 Israel for ever. 01:19 And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, 01:22 and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the Lord 01:26 spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of 01:29 the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto 01:32 the place where they lodged, and laid them down there. 01:35 And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of Jordan, 01:39 in the place where the feet of the priests which bare the ark 01:42 of the covenant stood: and they are there unto this day. 01:45 For the priests which bare the ark stood in the midst of 01:48 Jordan, until every thing was finished that the Lord commanded 01:51 Joshua to speak unto the people, according to all that Moses 01:54 commanded Joshua: and the people hasted and passed over. 01:58 And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed 02:01 over, that the ark of the Lord passed over, and the priests, 02:05 in the presence of the people. 02:06 And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, 02:09 and half the tribe of Manasseh, passed over armed before the 02:12 children of Israel, as Moses spake unto them: about forty 02:16 thousand prepared for war passed over before the Lord unto 02:19 battle, to the plains of Jericho. 02:21 On that day the Lord magnified Joshua in the sight of all 02:26 Israel; and they feared him, as they feared Moses, all the days 02:31 of his life. 02:32 And the Lord spake unto Joshua, saying, Command the priests that 02:36 bear the ark of the testimony, that they come up out of Jordan. 02:40 Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, 02:43 Come ye up out of Jordan. 02:44 And it came to pass, when the priests that bare the ark of the 02:47 covenant of the Lord were come up out of the midst of Jordan, 02:49 and the soles of the priests' feet were lifted up unto the dry 02:53 land, that the waters of Jordan returned unto their place, 02:56 and flowed over all his banks, as they did before. 02:59 And the people came up out of Jordan on the tenth day of the 03:02 first month, and encamped in Gilgal, in the east border 03:06 of Jericho. 03:07 And those twelve stones, which they took out of Jordan, 03:10 did Joshua pitch in Gilgal. 03:12 And he spake unto the children of Israel, saying, When your 03:16 children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, 03:18 What mean these stones? 03:20 Then ye shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over 03:23 this Jordan on dry land. 03:25 For the Lord your God dried up the waters of Jordan 03:28 from before you, until ye were passed over, as the Lord your 03:31 God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, 03:34 until we were gone over: that all the people of the earth 03:38 might know the hand of the Lord, that it is mighty: 03:41 that ye might fear the Lord your God forever. 03:44 Continuing in the book of Joshua, chapter 5, and this is 03:49 the King James Version. 03:50 And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, 03:53 which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings 03:56 of the Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the Lord had 03:59 dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of 04:02 Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, 04:06 neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the 04:08 children of Israel. 04:09 At that time the Lord said unto Joshua, Make thee sharp knives, 04:14 and circumcise again the children of Israel 04:16 the second time. 04:18 And Joshua made him sharp knives, and circumcised the 04:20 children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins. 04:22 And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise: all the people 04:27 that came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the 04:29 men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, 04:32 after they came out of Egypt. 04:33 Now all the people that came out were circumcised: but all the 04:37 people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they 04:39 came forth out of Egypt, them they had not circumcised. 04:42 For the children of Israel walked forty years in the 04:45 wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came 04:48 out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the 04:51 voice of the Lord: unto whom the Lord sware that he would not 04:54 show them the land, which the Lord sware unto their fathers 04:57 that he would give us, a land that floweth with 04:59 milk and honey. 05:00 And their children, whom he raised up in their stead, 05:03 them Joshua circumcised: for they were uncircumcised, 05:07 because they had not circumcised them by the way. 05:09 And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the 05:13 people, that they abode in their places in the camp, 05:16 till they were whole. 05:17 And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the 05:22 reproach of Egypt from off you. 05:24 Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day. 05:28 And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the 05:31 Passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the 05:34 plains of Jericho. 05:36 And they did eat of the old corn of the land on the morrow after 05:39 the Passover, unleavened cakes, and parched corn in the 05:43 selfsame day. 05:44 And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of 05:48 the old corn of the land; neither had the children of 05:50 Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land 05:55 of Canaan that year. 05:56 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted 06:01 up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over 06:05 against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went 06:09 unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, 06:12 or for our adversaries? 06:14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host 06:18 of the Lord am I now come. 06:20 And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, 06:23 and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? 06:27 And the captain of the Lord's host said unto Joshua, 06:31 Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou 06:35 standest is holy. 06:36 And Joshua did so. 06:38 We're continuing in the book of Joshua, chapter 6. 06:42 Now Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of 06:46 Israel: none went out, and none came in. 06:49 And the Lord said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thine 06:53 hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty 06:55 men of valor. 06:56 And ye shall compass the city, all ye men of war, and go round 07:00 about the city once. 07:02 Thus shalt thou do six days. 07:05 And seven priests shall bear before the ark seven trumpets of 07:09 rams' horns: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city 07:12 seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets. 07:16 And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast 07:19 with the ram's horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, 07:21 all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of 07:25 the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up 07:29 every man straight before him. 07:30 And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said unto them, 07:35 Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven 07:39 trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the Lord. 07:41 And he said unto the people, Pass on, and compass the city, 07:45 and let him that is armed pass on before the ark of the Lord. 07:48 And it came to pass, when Joshua had spoken unto the people, 07:52 that the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' 07:55 horns passed on before the Lord, and blew with the trumpets: 07:59 and the ark of the covenant of the Lord followed them. 08:01 And the armed men went before the priests that blew with the 08:05 trumpets, and the rereward came after the ark, the priests going 08:09 on, and blowing with the trumpets. 08:11 And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not 08:14 shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any 08:18 word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; 08:22 then shall ye shout. 08:24 So the ark of the Lord compassed the city, going about it once: 08:29 and they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp. 08:33 And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took 08:36 up the ark of the Lord. 08:37 And seven priests bearing seven trumpets of rams' horns before 08:41 the ark of the Lord went on continually, and blew with the 08:44 trumpets: and the armed men went before them; 08:47 but the rereward came after the ark of the Lord, the priests 08:50 going on, and blowing with the trumpets. 08:52 And the second day they compassed the city once, 08:55 and returned into the camp: so they did six days. 09:00 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose 09:04 early about the dawning of the day, and compassed the city 09:07 after the same manner seven times: only on that day they 09:11 compassed the city seven times. 09:14 And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests 09:17 blew with the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout; 09:20 for the Lord hath given you the city. 09:23 And the city shall be accursed, even it, and all that are 09:26 therein, to the Lord: only Rahab the harlot shall live, 09:29 she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the 09:32 messengers that we sent. 09:33 And ye, in any wise keep yourselves from the accursed 09:37 thing, lest ye make yourselves accursed, when ye take of the 09:40 accursed thing, and make the camp of Israel a curse, 09:42 and trouble it. 09:44 But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, 09:47 are consecrated unto the Lord: they shall come into the 09:51 treasury of the Lord. 09:52 So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: 09:56 and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the 09:59 trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, 10:01 that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the 10:05 city, every man straight before him, and they took the city. 10:09 And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, 10:12 both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, 10:15 and ass, with the edge of the sword. 10:17 But Joshua had said unto the two men that had spied out the 10:21 country, Go into the harlot's house, and bring out thence the 10:25 woman, and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her. 10:28 And the young men that were spies went in, and brought out 10:31 Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, 10:34 and all that she had; and they brought out all her kindred, 10:37 and left them without the camp of Israel. 10:39 And they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein: 10:43 only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of 10:46 iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the Lord. 10:50 And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive, and her father's 10:55 household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even 10:59 unto this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua 11:02 sent to spy out Jericho. 11:04 And Joshua adjured them at that time, saying, Cursed be the man 11:09 before the Lord, that riseth up and buildeth this city Jericho: 11:12 he shall lay the foundation thereof in his firstborn, 11:15 and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it. 11:18 So the Lord was with Joshua; and his fame was noised 11:22 throughout all the country. 11:24 We're continuing on in the book of Joshua, chapter 7. 11:28 But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the 11:34 accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, 11:38 the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed 11:42 thing: and the anger of the Lord was kindled against the 11:46 children of Israel. 11:47 And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Bethaven, 11:51 on the east side of Bethel, and spake unto them, saying, 11:55 Go up and view the country. 11:57 And the men went up and viewed Ai. 11:59 And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all 12:03 the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up 12:06 and smite Ai; and make not all the people to labor thither; 12:10 for they are but few. 12:11 So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: 12:15 and they fled before the men of Ai. 12:19 And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: 12:23 for they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, 12:27 and smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of 12:30 the people melted, and became as water. 12:33 And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth unto his face 12:37 before the ark of the Lord until the eventide, he and the elders 12:40 of Israel, and put dust upon their heads. 12:42 And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord God, wherefore hast thou at all 12:46 brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand 12:49 of the Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been 12:52 content, and dwelt on the other side Jordan! 12:54 O Lord, what shall I say, when Israel turneth their backs 12:58 before their enemies! 12:59 For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall 13:01 hear of it, and shall environ us round, and cut off our name from 13:05 the earth: and what wilt thou do unto thy great name? 13:08 And the Lord said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest 13:14 thou thus upon thy face? 13:16 Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my 13:19 covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the 13:23 accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, 13:26 and they have put it even among their own stuff. 13:29 Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their 13:32 enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because 13:34 they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, 13:37 except ye destroy the accursed from among you. 13:40 Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against 13:44 tomorrow: for thus saith the Lord God of Israel, There is an 13:48 accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not 13:51 stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed 13:54 thing from among you. 13:55 In the morning therefore ye shall be brought according to 13:57 your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the Lord 14:00 taketh shall come according to the families thereof; and the 14:03 family which the Lord shall take shall come by households; 14:06 and the household which the Lord shall take shall come 14:09 man by man. 14:10 And it shall be, that he that is taken with the accursed thing 14:13 shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath: because he 14:17 hath transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and because he hath 14:20 wrought folly in Israel. 14:22 Thank you for joining with me today to read the word of God. 14:26 Please join me again the next time. 14:28 And until that time may we be obedient to the word of the 14:32 Lord, that His blessings may rest on us and our families. |
