00:15 Hi, and welcome back to His Words Are Life.
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer and today we're going to be reading from the 00:20 book of Numbers. It's one of my favorite stories coming up and 00:23 Before we start, let's pray together. 00:25 Dear Jesus, thank you so much for the lessons that come alive 00:31 as we hear these words and the principles in these lessons that 00:35 can apply to each one of us today. And so as we read today, 00:39 the story of your children as you led them through the 00:42 wilderness and toward the promised land, as we read the 00:44 story of the spies, help us to not look at what we can see 00:50 the giants in our life, of trouble or despair, let us look 00:53 at the power of You to deliver us from those giants, 00:56 and to lead us safely to the promises and the fulfillment 01:00 that you have promised each one of us. 01:02 We love you so much and thank You for loving us. Amen 01:05 When we left off in Numbers, Moses had just called together 01:08 the twelve spies, one for each tribe, and he had sent them 01:12 to check out the land where God was bringing them, 01:14 and to bring back a report. Picking up the story now in 01:18 chapter 13 of Numbers, verse 23. This is the King James Version. 01:22 And they came to the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence 01:27 a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between 01:31 two upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates, 01:38 and of the figs. The place was called the brook of Eschcol, 01:41 because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Israel 01:44 cut down from thence. And they returned from searching of the 01:48 land after 40 days. And they went and came to Moses and to 01:52 Aaron and to all the congregation of the children 01:55 of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought 01:59 back word unto them, and unto all the congregation 02:02 and showed them the fruit of the land. And they told him 02:06 and said, We came unto the land whither thou sendest us 02:09 and surely it floweth with milk and honey, and this is the fruit 02:14 of it. Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land 02:19 and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw 02:25 the children of Anak there. The Amalekites dwell in the land of 02:29 the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the 02:32 Amorites dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanites dwell by the 02:34 sea and by the coast of Jordan. And Caleb stilled the people 02:40 before Moses and said, Let us go up at once and possess it; 02:44 for we are well able to overcome it. But the men that went up 02:49 with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; 02:52 for they are stronger than we. And they brought up an evil 02:57 report of the land which they had searched, unto the children 03:00 of Israel, saying, The land through which we have gone to 03:03 search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; 03:07 and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature 03:12 And there we saw the giants: the sons of Anak, which come of 03:17 the giants. And we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, 03:20 and so we were in their sight. 03:22 We are continuing now in chapter 14 of the book of Numbers. 03:27 This is the King James Version. 03:29 And all the congregation lifted up their voice and cried; 03:33 and the people wept that night. And all the children of Israel 03:37 murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole 03:40 congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in 03:43 land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness! 03:46 And wherefore hath the Lord brought us unto this land 03:49 to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be 03:52 a prey? Were it not better for us to return unto Egypt? 03:55 And they said, one to another, Let us make a captain 03:59 and let us return unto Egypt. Then Moses and Aaron fell on 04:04 their faces before all the assembly of the congregation 04:07 of the children of Israel. And Joshua, the son of Nun, 04:11 and Caleb the son of Jephunneh which were of them that searched 04:15 the land, rent their clothes. And they spake unto all the 04:18 company of the children of Israel saying, The land which we 04:22 passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land. 04:25 If the Lord delight in us, then He will bring us into this land, 04:29 and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey, 04:32 only rebel not ye against the Lord, neither fear ye 04:38 the people of the land; for they are bread for us: 04:40 their defense is departed from them, and the Lord is with us: 04:43 fear them not. But all the congregation bade stone them 04:49 with stones. And the glory of the Lord appeared in the 04:54 tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of 04:57 Israel. And the Lord said unto Moses, How long will this people 05:02 provoke me? And how long will it be ere they believe me, for 05:07 all the signs which I have showed among them? 05:09 I will smite them with a pestilence, and disinherit them, 05:14 and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they. 05:20 And Moses said unto the Lord, Then the Egyptians shall hear it 05:25 for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among 05:27 them and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land 05:30 for they have heard that Thou Lord art among this people, 05:33 that thou, Lord, art seen face to face, and that thy cloud 05:37 standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by day 05:40 time in a pillar of cloud, and a pillar of fire by night. 05:43 Now, if Thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the 05:48 nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying, 05:51 because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the 05:55 land which he sware unto them and therefore he has slain them 05:57 in the wilderness. Now I beseech let the power of my Lord 06:02 be great, according as thou has spoken, saying, 06:05 The Lord is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving 06:10 iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty 06:13 visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children 06:17 unto the third and fourth generation, pardon I beseech 06:21 thee, the iniquity of this people, according unto the 06:24 greatness of Thy mercy. And as thou hast forgiven this people, 06:29 from Egypt, even until now. And the Lord said, I have pardoned, 06:34 according to thy word. But as truly as I live, all the earth 06:39 shall be filled with the glory of the Lord. 06:42 Because all those men which have seen my glory 06:46 and my miracles which I did in Egypt, and in the wilderness, 06:50 and have tempted me now these ten times and have not 06:55 hearkened to my voice; surely they shall not see the land 06:59 which I sware unto their fathers neither shall any of them that 07:04 provoked me see it. But my servant Caleb, because he had 07:09 another spirit with him and hath followed me fully, him will I 07:13 bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall 07:18 possess it. Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the 07:22 valley. Tomorrow, turn you, and get you into the wilderness 07:26 by the way of the Red sea. And the Lord spake unto Moses 07:29 and unto Aaron, saying, How long shall I bear with this 07:32 evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the 07:37 murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur 07:39 against me. Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the Lord 07:44 as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you: 07:48 Your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness; and all that 07:53 were numbered of you, according to your whole number, 07:56 from 20 years old and upward, 07:58 which have murmured against me, doubtless 08:02 these shall not come into the land concerning which I sware 08:06 to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, 08:09 and Joshua, the son of Nun. But your little ones, which ye 08:15 said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall 08:19 know the land which ye have despised. But as for you, your 08:25 carcasses, they shall fall in this wilderness. 08:28 And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, 08:33 and bear your whoredoms until your carcasses be wasted in the 08:38 wilderness. After the number of the days in which ye searched 08:42 the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear 08:48 your iniquities, even 40 years. And ye shall know my breach of 08:53 promise. I the Lord have said, I will surely do it unto all this 08:58 evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: 09:01 in this wilderness, they shall be consumed, and there they 09:06 shall die. And the men, which Moses sent to search the land 09:11 who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against 09:15 him, by bringing up a slander upon the land, even those men 09:20 that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by 09:23 the plague before the Lord. But Joshua the son of Nun 09:28 and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went 09:32 to search the land, lived still. And Moses told these sayings 09:36 unto all the children of Israel. And the people mourned greatly. 09:40 And they rose up early in the morning and gat them up into 09:45 the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here 09:48 and will go up unto the place which the Lord hath promised: 09:51 for we have sinned. And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye 09:55 transgress the commandment of the Lord? but it shall not 09:58 prosper. Go not up, for the Lord is not among you; 10:02 that ye be not smitten before your enemies. 10:05 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, 10:08 And ye shall fall by the sword because ye are turned away from 10:11 the Lord, therefore the Lord will not be with you. 10:14 But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the 10:19 ark of the covenant of the Lord, and Moses, departed not out of 10:23 camp. Then the Amalekites came down and the Canaanites which 10:28 dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, 10:33 even unto Hormah. 10:34 Continuing in the book of Numbers this is chapter 15, 10:39 The King James Version. 10:40 And the Lord spake unto Moses saying, speak unto the children 10:45 of Isreal, and say unto them, When ye be come into the land 10:49 of your habitations, which I give unto you, 10:51 and will make an offering by fire unto the Lord, 10:54 a burnt offering or a sacrifice in performing a vow, 10:57 or any freewill offering, or in your solemn feasts, to make a 11:02 sweet savour unto the Lord, of the herd, or of the flock. 11:04 Then shall he that offereth his offering unto the Lord bring a 11:09 meat offering of a tenth deal of flour mingled with the fourth 11:12 part of an hin of oil. And the fourth part of an hin of wine 11:16 for a drink offering shalt thou prepare with the burnt offering 11:18 or sacrifice, for one lamb. Or for a ram, thou shalt prepare 11:23 for a meat offering two tenth deals of flour mingled with the 11:28 third part of an hin of oil. And for a drink offering thou shalt 11:32 offer the third part of an hin of wine, for a sweet savour unto 11:35 the Lord. And when thou preparest a bullock for a burnt 11:38 offering, or for a sacrifice in performing a vow, 11:41 or peace offerings unto the Lord then shall he bring 11:45 with a bullock a meat offering of three tenth deals of flour 11:49 mingled with an half an hin of oil. And thou shalt bring 11:53 for a drink offering half an hin of wine, for an offering made 11:56 by fire, of a sweet savour unto the Lord. 11:58 Thus shall it be done for one bullock, or for one ram, or for 12:03 a lamb, or a kid. According to the number that ye shall prepare 12:06 so shall ye do to every one according to their number. 12:09 All that are born of the country shall do these things after this 12:13 manner, in offering an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour 12:17 unto the Lord. And if a stranger sojourn with you or whosoever be 12:23 among you in your generations, and will offer an offering made 12:26 by fire, of a sweet savour unto the Lord as ye do, 12:29 so he shall do. 12:32 One ordinance shall be both for you of the congregation, and 12:35 also for the stranger that sojourneth with you, and 12:38 an ordinance forever in your generations: as ye are so shall 12:42 the stranger be before the Lord. One law, one manner shall be for 12:47 you and for the stranger that sojourneth with you. 12:49 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children 12:54 of Israel and say unto them, When ye come into the land 12:58 whither I bring you then it shall be that when ye eat of the 13:01 bread of the land, ye shall offer up an heave offering unto 13:04 the Lord. Ye shall offer up a cake of the first of your dough 13:09 for an heave offering. As ye do the heave offering of the 13:12 threshing floor so shall ye heave it. 13:14 Of the first of your dough ye shall give unto the Lord an 13:18 heave offering in your generations. 13:19 And if ye have erred, and not observed all these commandments, 13:23 which the Lord hath spoken unto Moses, even all that the Lord 13:26 hath commanded you by the hand of Moses, from the day that the 13:30 Lord commanded Moses and henceforward among your 13:32 generations, then it shall be if aught be committed by ignorance 13:36 without the knowledge of the congregation, 13:38 that all the congregation shall offer one young bullock, 13:41 for a burnt offering for a sweet savour unto the Lord, 13:44 with his meat offering and his drink offering, according 13:47 to the manner, and one kid of the goats for a sin offering. 13:51 And the priest shall make an atonement for all 13:54 the congregation of the children of Israel, 13:56 and it shall be forgiven them; for it is ignorance: 14:00 and they shall bring their offering, a sacrifice made by 14:05 fire unto the Lord, and their sin offering before the Lord, 14:09 for their ignorance. And it shall be forgiven all 14:12 the congregation of the children of Israel, and the stranger that 14:14 sojourneth among them; seeing all the people were in ignorance 14:18 And if any soul sin through ignorance, then he shall bring 14:21 a she goat of the first year for a sin offering, and the priest 14:24 shall make an atonement for the soul that sinneth ignorantly 14:27 when he sinneth by ignorance before the Lord, to make an 14:31 atonement for him; and it shall be forgiven him. 14:33 Thank you for joining with me today to read God's word. 14:37 Please join with me next time to hear the words of life.
