00:17 Hi, and welcome back to His Words are Life.
00:20 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and thank you for being with me today to read 00:23 in the book of Genesis, the ongoing story of Joseph. 00:26 But before we read, let's pray together. Dear Jesus, thank you 00:30 again for and opportunity to come apart for a few minutes 00:34 and spend time directly with you in your presence with your word. 00:39 May these words speak to us in the way that you would have 00:43 them, in each of our hearts. Touch us and give us the wisdom 00:47 that you know that we need. You know all the circumstances 00:50 of everyone listening right now. Please come close to each of us. 00:54 Draw us close to you, that's where we long to be. 00:56 We love you so much. Thank you for loving us. Amen. 01:00 We're reading the story of Joseph, down in Egypt and how 01:05 after many years he had - there was a famine in the land. 01:08 He had his brothers come and he tested them out and revealed 01:11 himself to them, had them bring their father and all of their 01:14 families down and settle in Goshen and now his father, 01:18 Jacob, Israel, is getting older and is in poor health, 01:23 and so Joseph brings to his father, his two sons, Ephraim, 01:27 and Manasseh. And we'll pick up the story in Genesis 48, and 01:33 verse 9. This is the King James Version. 01:35 And Joseph said unto his father, They are my sons, whom God hath 01:41 given me in this place. And he said, Bring them, I pray thee, 01:44 unto me, and I will bless them. Now the eyes of Israel were dim 01:49 for age, so that he could not see. And he brought them near 01:52 unto him; and he kissed them, and embraced them. 01:54 And Israel said unto Joseph, I had not thought to see thy 01:58 face, and lo, God hath shewed me also thy seed. And Joseph 02:04 brought them out from between his knees, and he bowed himself 02:07 with his face to the earth. And Joseph took them both, Ephraim, 02:11 in his right hand toward Israel's left hand, and Manasseh 02:15 in his left hand, toward Israel's right hand, 02:17 and brought them near unto him. And he blessed Joseph and said, 02:22 God, before whom my fathers, Abraham and Isaac, did walk 02:25 the God which fed me all my life long unto this day, 02:29 The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; 02:33 and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers 02:36 Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude 02:40 in the midst of the earth. And And when Joseph saw that 02:43 his father laid his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, 02:46 it displeased him: and he held up his father's hand, to remove 02:50 it from Ephraim's head unto Manasseh's head. And Joseph 02:53 said unto his father, Not so, my father for this is the firstborn 02:57 put thy right hand upon his head. And his father refused, 03:01 and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become 03:06 a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger 03:10 brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become 03:13 a multitude of nations. And he blessed them that day, saying 03:17 In thee shall Israel bless, saying, God make thee as 03:20 Ephraim and as Manasseh: and he set Ephraim before Manasseh. 03:25 And Israel said unto Joseph, Behold, I die: but God shall be 03:31 with you, and bring you again unto the land of your fathers. 03:34 Moreover I have given to thee one portion above they brethren, 03:38 which I took out of the hand of the Amorite with my sword 03:41 and with my bow. We're continuing to read 03:45 now in the King James version, Genesis, chapter 49. 03:48 And Jacob called unto his sons, and said, Gather yourselves 03:53 together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you 03:56 in the last days. Gather yourselves together, and hear 03:59 ye sons of Jacob; and hearken unto Israel your father. 04:03 Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of 04:08 my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of 04:12 power: Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou 04:17 wentest up to thy father's bed; then defiledst thou it: 04:21 he went up to my couch. Simeon and Levi are brethren 04:25 instruments of cruelty are in their habitations. O my soul, 04:30 come not thou into their secret; unto their assembly, mine honor, 04:35 be not thou united: for in their anger they slew a man, 04:38 and in their selfwill they digged down a wall. 04:42 Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, 04:46 for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them 04:50 in Israel. Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise: 04:56 Thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy father's 04:59 children shall bow down before thee. Judah is a lion's whelp: 05:04 from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, 05:08 he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up 05:12 The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver 05:16 from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him 05:20 shall the gathering of the people be. Binding his foal 05:24 unto the vine, and his ass's colt unto the choice vine; 05:27 He washed his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of 05:31 grapes: His eyes shall be red with wine, and his teeth white 05:35 with milk. Zebulun shall dwell at the haven of the sea; 05:39 and he shall be for an haven of ships; and his border shall be 05:44 unto Zidon. Issachar is a strong ass couching between 2 burdens: 05:50 And he saw that rest was good, and the land that it was 05:53 pleasant; and bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant 05:56 into tribute. Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes 06:01 of Israel. Dan shall be a serpent by the way, 06:04 an adder in the path, that biteth the horse heels, 06:07 so that his rider shall fall backward. 06:09 I have waited for thy salvation, O Lord. 06:12 Gad, a troop shall overcome him: but he shall overcome 06:17 at the last. Out of Asher his bread shall be fat, 06:22 and he shall yield royal dainties. Napthali is a hind 06:26 let loose: he giveth goodly words. Joseph is a fruitful 06:31 bough, even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run 06:35 over the wall: The archers have sorely grieved him, and shot at 06:40 him, and hated him: But his bow abode in strength, and the arms 06:46 of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God 06:51 of Jacob; from thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel: 06:55 Even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee; 06:59 and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of 07:02 heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings 07:07 of the breasts, and of the womb: The blessings of thy father have 07:12 prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors unto the 07:15 utmost bound of the everlasting hills: they shall be on the 07:19 head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was 07:22 separate from his brethren. Benjamin shall ravin as a wolf: 07:27 in the morning he shall devour the prey, and at night he shall 07:30 divide the spoil. All these are the twelve tribes of Israel: 07:35 and this is it that their father spake unto them, and blessed 07:39 them; every one according to his blessing he blessed them. 07:42 And he charged them, and said unto them, I am to be gathered 07:46 unto my people: bury me with my fathers in the cave that is 07:51 in the field of Ephron the Hittite, in the cave that is in 07:55 the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of 07:58 Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron 08:01 the Hittite for a possession of a burying place. 08:04 There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife; there they 08:08 buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife; and there I buried Leah. 08:12 The purchase of the field and of the cave that is therein was 08:16 from the children of Heth. And when Jacob had made an end 08:20 of commanding his sons, he gathered up his feet into the 08:24 bed, and yielded up the ghost, and was gathered unto his people 08:29 We're continuing now with chapter 50, the book of Genesis. 08:33 This is the King James Version. And Joseph fell upon 08:39 his father's face, and wept upon him, and kissed him. And Joseph 08:44 commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: 08:47 and the physicians embalmed Israel. And forty days were 08:52 fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those 08:55 which are embalmed: and the Egyptians mourned for him 08:58 threescore and ten days. And when the days of his mourning 09:02 were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, 09:06 If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, 09:11 in the ears of Pharaoh, saying, My father made me swear, 09:15 saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digged for me 09:20 in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. 09:23 Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, 09:28 and I will come again. And Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury 09:33 thy father, according as he made thee swear. 09:36 And Joseph went up to bury his father: and with him went up all 09:40 the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the 09:43 elders of the land of Egypt, And all the house of Joseph, 09:47 and his brethren, and his father's house: only their 09:50 little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left 09:52 in the land of Goshen. And there went up with him both chariots 09:56 and horsemen: and it was a very great company. And they came to 10:00 the threshingfloor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan, 10:03 and there they mourned with a very great and very sore 10:06 lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father 7 days. 10:11 And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw 10:15 the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a 10:19 grievous mourning to the Egyptians: wherefore the name 10:22 of it was called Abelmizraim, which is beyond Jordan. 10:26 And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them: 10:30 For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried 10:34 him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought 10:37 with the field for a possession of a burying place of Ephron 10:41 the Hittite, before Mamre. And Joseph returned into 10:45 Egypt, he, and his brethren, and all that went up with him to 10:49 bury his father, after he had buried his father. 10:51 And when Joseph's brethren saw that their father was dead, 10:55 they said, Joseph will peradventure hate us, 10:59 and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did 11:03 unto him. And they sent a messenger unto Joseph, saying, 11:07 Thy father did command before he died, saying, So shall ye say 11:12 unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy 11:16 brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee evil: 11:19 and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of 11:23 the God of they father. And Joseph wept when they spake 11:27 unto him. And his brethren also went and fell down before 11:31 his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants. And Joseph 11:35 said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God? 11:39 But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it 11:45 unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much 11:50 people alive. Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, 11:55 and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly 11:59 unto them. And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father's 12:03 house: and Joseph lived and hundred and ten years. 12:05 And Joseph saw Ephraim's children of the 3rd generation: 12:10 the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were brought up 12:14 upon Joseph's knees. And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: 12:19 and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land 12:23 unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to 12:28 Jacob. And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, 12:32 saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my 12:36 bones from hence. So Joseph died, being an hundred and ten 12:42 years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin 12:46 in Egypt. - We're continuing to read now in the book of Exodus. 12:51 This is the King James Version, Exodus, chapter one. 12:54 Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came 12:58 into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob. 13:02 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, 13:08 Dan and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. And all the souls that 13:14 came out of the loins of Jacob were 70 souls: for Joseph 13:17 was in Egypt already. And Joseph died, and all his brethren, 13:21 and all that generation. And the children of Israel were 13:25 fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, 13:29 and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them. 13:32 Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not 13:38 Joseph. And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of 13:43 the children of Israel are more and mightier than we: Come on, 13:48 let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come 13:52 to pass that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto 13:56 our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of 14:00 our land. Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict 14:06 them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure 14:10 cities, Pithom and Raamses. But the more they afflicted them, 14:14 the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved 14:18 because of the children of Israel. And the Egyptians 14:22 made the children of Israel to serve with rigor: 14:25 Thank you for being with me to read today and we'll pick up 14:29 the story of the children of Israel in Egypt next time. 14:31 Until then God bless and keep you. |
