00:17 Hi, and welcome back to His Words are Life.
00:19 I'm Kelly Mowrer and thank you for joining with me today 00:22 to keep reading the wonderful story of Joseph. Before we start 00:26 Let's pray together. Dear God, thank you again, again and again 00:31 for sending these words to us; for the comfort they bring to us 00:35 for the encouragement; for the inspiration and for what they 00:39 show us about you. That is the deepest cry of our heart. 00:42 We want to see you. We want to know you. Please help us now to 00:46 understand you deeper than we have before because of the 00:50 stories that we're about to read and be with us as we read, 00:53 that we may understand. We love you so much, and thank you 00:57 for loving us. Amen. When we were last together we 01:01 were reading the story of the famine in Egypt and how Joseph's 01:05 Brethren came down and bought food from him, and how he tested 01:10 them out to see if their hearts had changed; and the ultimate 01:15 test came and he was going to keep Benjamin as his slave 01:19 and send the rest back, because he had set it up to make it look 01:21 like Benjamin had stolen the silver cup in Joseph's house 01:25 and his brother, Judah, made a beautiful speech to him, just 01:31 begging him, Please don't keep our brother Benjamin here. 01:35 He's the last thing my father has from the wife that he loved 01:38 so much. Keep me instead. Send Benjamin went back home and 01:42 Joseph knew then that his brothers weren't the same. 01:45 as they had been when they sold him into slavery. And he sent 01:49 all of his household help out of the room and he revealed 01:52 himself to his brothers, and joyfully said, I am Joseph! 01:56 Go get our father. Come on down here. There's going to be 5 more 01:59 years of famine. I'll take care of you. And he wept 02:02 and he hugged them and they all talked together. 02:04 We're picking up the story now in Genesis chapter 45, verse 16 02:09 and this is the King James Version. 02:10 And the fame thereof was heard in Pharaoh's house, saying 02:15 Joseph's brethren are come: and it pleased Pharaoh well, 02:18 and his servants. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Say unto thy 02:22 brethren, This do ye; lade your beasts, and go, get you unto the 02:27 land of Canaan; and take your father and your households, 02:31 and come unto me: and I will give you the good of the land 02:33 of Egypt, and ye shall eat of the fat of the land. 02:36 Now thou art commanded, this do ye; take you wagons out of the 02:41 land of Egypt for your little ones, and for your wives, 02:44 and bring your father, and come. Also regard not your stuff, 02:48 for the good of all the land of Egypt is yours. And the children 02:52 of Israel did so: and Joseph gave them wagons, according to 02:55 the commandment of Pharaoh, and gave them provision for the 02:59 way. To all of them he gave each man changes of raiment; 03:02 but to Benjamin he gave 300 pieces of silver, and 5 changes 03:07 of raiment. And to his father he sent after this manner; 10 asses 03:12 laden with the good things of Egypt, and 10 she asses laden 03:16 with corn and bread and meat for his father by the way. 03:19 So he sent his brethren away, and they departed: and he said 03:23 unto them, See that ye fall not out by the way. And they went 03:27 up out of Egypt, and came into the land of Canaan unto Jacob 03:31 their father, and told him, saying, Joseph is yet alive, 03:34 and he is governor over all the land of Egypt. And Jacob's heart 03:38 fainted, for he believed them not. And they told him all 03:43 the words of Joseph, which he had said unto them: and when he 03:47 saw the wagons which Joseph had sent to carry him, 03:49 the spirit of Jacob their father revived: and Israel said, 03:54 It is enough; Joseph my son is yet alive: 03:59 I will go and see him before I die. 04:03 Continuing to read in Chapter 46 04:06 the book of Genesis. And Israel took his journey 04:11 with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered 04:15 sacrifices unto the God of his father Isaac. And God spake 04:19 unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, Jacob, 04:22 Jacob. And he said, Here am I. And he said, I am God, the God 04:28 of they father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will 04:32 there make of thee a great nation: I will go down with thee 04:36 into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again: 04:39 and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes. And Jacob 04:45 rose up from Beersheba: and the sons of Israel carried Jacob 04:48 their father, and their little ones, and their wives, 04:50 in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. 04:53 And they took their cattle, and their goods, which they had 04:56 gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob, 05:00 and all his seed with him: His sons, and his sons' sons with 05:05 him, his daughters, and his sons' daughters, and all 05:08 his seed brought he with him into Egypt. 05:11 And these are the names of the children of Israel, which came 05:16 into Egypt, Jacob and his sons: Reuben, Jacob's firstborn. 05:19 And the sons of Reuben; - and the sons of Simeon; 05:24 And the sons of Levi; and the sons of Judah; and the sons of 05:27 Issachar; and the sons of Zebulun. - the sons of Leah 05:31 which she bare - and the sons of Gad; the sons of Asher - 05:34 the sons of Zilpah and the sons of Rachel, Jacob's wife, Joseph 05:37 and Benjamin. - We're reading now I skipped, as you may have 05:41 noticed, skipped a lot of the names of those sons, 05:43 the genealogy. Moving on to Genesis, chapter 46, verse 20 05:50 We'll pick it up there. - And unto Joseph in the land of Egypt 05:54 were born Manasseh and Ephraim, which Asenath the daughter of 05:57 Potipherah, priest of On, bare unto him. And the sons of 06:02 Benjamin were Belah, and Becher, and Ashbel, Gera and Naaman, 06:06 Ehi, and Rosh, Muppim and Huppim and Ard. These are the sons of 06:11 Rachael, which were born to Jacob: all the souls were 14. 06:15 And the sons of Dan; Hushim. And the sons of Naphtali; 06:19 Jahzeel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shillem. These are the sons 06:23 of Bilhah, which Laban gave unto Rachael his daughter, and she 06:26 bare these unto Jacob: all the souls were 7. All the souls 06:31 that came with Jacob into Egypt, which came out of his loins, 06:34 besides Jacob's sons wives, all the souls were threescore and 6; 06:39 And the sons of Joseph, which were born him in Egypt, 06:42 were two souls: all the souls of the house of Jacob, which came 06:46 into Egypt, were threescore and ten. And he sent Judah 06:50 before him unto Joseph, to direct his face unto Goshen; 06:53 and they came into the land of Goshen. And Joseph made ready 06:57 his chariot, and went up to meet Israel his father, to Goshen, 07:00 and presented himself unto him; and he fell on his neck and wept 07:06 on his neck a good while. And Israel said unto Joseph, 07:10 Now let me die, since I have seen thy face, because thou art 07:15 yet alive. And Joseph said unto his brethren, and unto his 07:20 father's house, I will go up, and shew Pharaoh, and say 07:23 unto him, My brethren, and my father's house, which were in 07:26 the land of Canaan, are come unto me; and the men are 07:29 shepherds, for their trade hath been to feed cattle; and they 07:32 have brought their flocks, and their herds, and all that they 07:35 have. And it shall come to pass, when Pharaoh shall call you, 07:38 and shall say, What is your occupation? That ye shall say, 07:41 thy servant's trade hath been about cattle from our youth 07:44 even until now, both we, and also our fathers: 07:48 that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is 07:52 an abomination unto the Egyptians. 07:54 Continuing to read now in Genesis, in chapter 47, 07:58 This is the King James Version. Then Joseph came and told 08:02 Pharoah, and said, My father and my brethren, 08:04 and their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have, 08:06 are come out of the land of Canaan; and behold, they are 08:09 in the land of Goshen. And he took some of his brethren, 08:12 even five men, and presented them unto Pharaoh, 08:16 And Pharaoh said unto his brethren, 08:18 What is your occupation? And they said unto Pharaoh, 08:21 Thy servants are shepherds, both we, and also our fathers. 08:25 They said moreover unto Pharaoh, For to sojourn in the land 08:29 are we come; for thy servants have no pasture for their flocks 08:33 for the famine is sore in the land of Canaan: now therefore, 08:36 we pray thee, let thy servants dwell in the land of Goshen. 08:40 And Pharaoh spake unto Joseph, saying, Thy father and thy 08:44 brethren are come unto thee: The land of Egypt is before thee 08:47 in the best of the land make thy father and brethren to dwell; 08:50 in the land of Goshen let them dwell: and if thou knowest any 08:54 men of activity among them, then make them rulers over 08:57 my cattle. And Joseph brought in Jacob his father, and set him 09:01 before Pharaoh: and Jacob blessed Pharaoh. 09:03 And Pharaoh said unto Jacob, How old art thou? And Jacob 09:07 said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are 09:11 an hundred and thirty years: few and evil have the days of 09:15 the years of my life been, and have not attained unto the days 09:19 of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their 09:21 pilgrimage. And Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from 09:25 before Pharaoh. And Joseph placed his father and his 09:28 brethren, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, 09:31 in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh 09:35 had commanded. And Joseph nourished his father, and his 09:38 brethren, and all his father's household, with bread, 09:41 according to their families. And there was no bread in all the 09:45 land; for the famine was very sore, so that the land of Egypt 09:49 and all the land of Canaan fainted by reason of the famine. 09:52 And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land 09:56 of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, for the corn which they 09:59 bought: and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh's house. 10:02 And when money failed in the land of Egypt, and in the land 10:05 of Canaan, all the Egyptians came unto Joseph, and said, 10:08 give us bread: for why should we die in thy presence? 10:11 for the money faileth. And Joseph said, Give your cattle 10:16 and I will give you for your cattle, if money fail. 10:18 And they brought their cattle unto Joseph: and Joseph gave 10:22 them bread in exchange for horses, and for their flocks, 10:25 and for the cattle of the herds, and for the asses: and he fed 10:28 them with bread for all their cattle for that year. When that 10:32 year was ended, they came unto him the second year, and said 10:36 unto him, We will not hide it from my lord, how that our money 10:40 is spent; my lord also hath our herds of cattle; there is 10:44 aught left in the sight of my lord, but our bodies, 10:46 and our lands: Wherefore shall we die before thine eyes, 10:49 both we and our land? buy us and our land for bread, and we 10:54 and our land will be servants unto Pharaoh: and give us seed 10:58 that we may live, and not die, that the land be not desolate. 11:01 And Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharoah; for the 11:06 Egyptians sold every man his field, because the famine 11:08 prevailed over them: so the land became Pharaoh's. 11:11 and as for the people, he removed them to cities 11:14 from one end of the borders of Egypt even to the other end 11:17 thereof. Only the land of the priests bought he not; 11:21 for the priests had a portion assigned them of Pharaoh, 11:24 and did eat their portion which Pharaoh gave them; wherefore 11:28 they sold not their lands. Then Joseph said unto the people, 11:32 Behold, I have bought you this day and your land for Pharaoh: 11:36 lo, here is seed for you, and ye shall sow the land. 11:40 And it shall come to pass in the increase, that ye shall give 11:43 the fifth part unto Pharaoh, and four parts shall be your own, 11:47 for seed of the field, and for your food, and for them of your 11:51 households, and for food for your little ones. And they said, 11:54 Thou hast saved our lives; let us find grace in the sight of 11:58 my lord, and we will be Pharaoh's servants. 12:01 And Joseph made it a law over the land of Egypt unto this day 12:05 that Pharaoh should have the fifth part; except the land of 12:10 the priests only, which became not Pharaoh's. 12:13 And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the country of 12:17 Goshen; and they had possessions therein, and grew and multiplied 12:21 exceedingly. And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt 17 years: 12:26 so the whole age of Jacob was an hundred forty and seven years. 12:30 And the time drew nigh that Israel must die: and he called 12:34 his son Joseph, and said unto him, If now I have found grace 12:39 in thy sight, put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh, 12:43 and deal kindly and truly with me; bury me not, I pray thee, 12:48 in Egypt: But I will lie with my fathers, and thou shalt 12:52 carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their burying place. 12:56 And he said, I will do as thou hast said. And he said, 13:01 Swear unto me. And he sware unto him. And Israel bowed himself 13:06 upon the bed's head. Continuing now with chapter 48. 13:11 This is the King James Version. And it came to pass after these 13:15 things, that one told Joseph, Behold, thy father is sick: 13:19 and he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. 13:23 And one told Jacob, and said, Behold, thy son Joseph cometh 13:27 unto thee: and Israel strengthened himself, 13:29 and sat upon the bed. And Jacob said unto Joseph, 13:33 God Almighty appeared unto me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and 13:38 blessed me and said unto me, Behold I will make thee fruitful 13:41 and multiply thee, and I will make of thee a multitude of 13:44 people; and will give this land to thy seed after thee for an 13:48 everlasting possession. And now thy two sons, 13:51 Ephraim and Manasseh, which were born unto thee in the land 13:55 of Egypt before I came unto thee into Egypt, are mine; 13:58 as Reuben and Simeon, they shall be mine. And thy issue, which 14:02 thou begettest after them, shall be thine, and shall be called 14:05 after the name of their brethren in their inheritance. 14:08 And as for me, when I came from Padan, Rachel died by me 14:13 in the land of Canaan in the way when yet there was but a little 14:16 way to come to Ephrath: and I buried her there in the way of 14:19 Ephrath; the same is Bethlehem. And Israel beheld Joseph's 14:23 sons, and said, Who are these? We'll pick up the story 14:29 next time we're together. Thank you for joining with me. 14:32 Goodbye. |
