00:17 Hi and welcome back to His Words Are Life.
00:19 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and today 00:21 we're to continue to read in 00:22 Genesis. But before we do that, let's pray together. 00:25 Dear Jesus, thank you so much for blessing us and keeping us 00:30 and giving us life and bringing us again to this time when we 00:34 can come and read Your words and be strengthened, 00:38 have our faith increased through the hearing of Your guidance 00:41 and Your counsel and the stories that You have left for us 00:44 as an example. Please be with us now as we read 00:47 and guide our hearts and minds closer to You. 00:50 We love You so much, and thank you for loving us. Amen. 00:54 I'm reading today from Genesis, and when we left off 00:58 we had just read the story of Abraham 00:59 and his obedience to God even to the point of being willing 01:03 to sacrifice his only son when God told him to do so. 01:06 But God stopped him at the point that Abraham had fully displayed 01:10 his obedience, and then God blessed him... 01:12 and through him He's blessed us. 01:14 As we read together now, we continue with Abraham's story 01:17 in Genesis chapter 23, and this is the King James version. 01:21 And Sarah was a hundred and seven and twenty years old: 01:25 these were the years of the life of Sarah. 01:28 And Sarah died in Kirjatharba; 01:31 the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan: 01:33 and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her. 01:36 And Abraham stood up from before his dead, 01:39 and spake unto the sons of Heth, saying, 01:42 "I am a stranger and a sojourner with you: give me a possession 01:46 of a burying place with you, that I may bury my dead 01:49 out of my sight. " 01:51 And the children of Heth answered Abraham, 01:53 saying unto him, "Hear us, my lord: 01:55 thou art a mighty prince among us: 01:58 in the choice of our sepulchers bury thy dead; 02:01 none of us shall withhold from thee his sepulcher, 02:04 but that thou mayest bury thy dead. " 02:06 And Abraham stood up, and bowed himself 02:10 to the people of the land, even to the children of Heth. 02:13 And he communed with them, saying, 02:15 "If it be your mind that I should bury my dead 02:19 out of my sight; hear me, and entreat for me to Ephron 02:23 the son of Zohar, That he may give me the cave of Machpelah, 02:27 which he hath, which is in the end of his field; 02:30 for as much money as it is worth he shall give it me 02:34 for a possession of a burying place amongst you. " 02:37 And Ephron dwelt among the children of Heth: 02:39 and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the audience 02:42 of the children of Heth, even of all that went in at the 02:45 gate of his city, saying, "Nay, my lord, hear me: 02:48 the field give I thee, and the cave that is therein, 02:53 I give it thee; in the presence of the sons of my people 02:57 give I it thee: bury thy dead. " 03:01 And Abraham bowed down himself before the people of the land. 03:04 And he spake unto Ephron in the audience of the people 03:06 of the land, saying, "But if thou wilt give it, 03:09 I pray thee, hear me: I will give thee money 03:12 for the field: take it of me, and I will bury my dead there. " 03:16 And Ephron answered Abraham, saying unto him, 03:20 "My lord, hearken unto me: the land is worth four hundred 03:24 shekels of silver; what is that betwixt me and thee? 03:27 bury therefore thy dead. " 03:29 And Abraham hearkened unto Ephron; and Abraham weighed 03:34 to Ephron the silver, which he had named in the audience 03:37 of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, 03:40 current money with the merchant. 03:42 And the field of Ephron, which was in Machpelah, 03:45 which was before Mamre, the field, and the cave 03:49 which was therein, and all the trees that were in the field, 03:51 that were in all the borders round about, were made sure 03:55 unto Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children 03:58 of Heth, before all that went in at the gate of his city. 04:03 And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave 04:07 of the field of Machpelah before Mamre: 04:09 the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan. 04:13 And the field, and the cave that is therein, 04:15 were made sure unto Abraham for a possession of a burying 04:18 place by the sons of Heth. 04:21 We are continuing to read in Genesis. 04:23 This is chapter 24, and this 04:25 is the King James version. 04:26 And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: 04:31 and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things. 04:34 And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, 04:38 that ruled over all that he had, 04:40 "Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh: 04:43 And I will make thee swear by the Lord, 04:46 the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, 04:48 that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters 04:51 of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell: 04:54 But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, 04:57 and take a wife unto my son Isaac. " 04:59 And the servant said unto him, 05:01 "Peradventure the women will not be willing to follow me 05:03 unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto 05:07 the land from whence thou camest? " 05:08 And Abraham said unto him, "Beware thou that thou bring not 05:13 my son thither again. The Lord God of heaven, 05:16 which took me from my father's house, and from the land 05:19 of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that sware unto me, 05:23 saying, 'Unto thy seed will I give this land; ' 05:25 He shall send His angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife 05:29 unto my son from thence. 05:32 And if the women will not be willing to follow thee, 05:34 then thou shalt be clear from this my oath: 05:37 only bring not my son thither again. " 05:40 And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham 05:44 his master and sware to him concerning that matter. 05:47 And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, 05:51 and departed; for all the goods of his master were in his hand: 05:55 and he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, 05:57 unto the city of Nahor. 05:59 And he made his camels to kneel down without the city 06:02 by a well of water at the time of the evening, 06:05 even the time that women go out to draw water. 06:08 And he said, "O Lord God of my master Abraham, 06:12 I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and show kindness 06:17 unto my master Abraham. 06:19 Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of 06:23 the men of the city come out to draw water: 06:26 And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, 06:30 'Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; ' 06:33 and she shall say, 'Drink, 06:36 and I will give thy camels drink also: ' 06:39 let the same be she that Thou has appointed for thy servant 06:43 Isaac; and thereby shall I know that Thou has showed kindness 06:48 unto my master. " And it came to pass, 06:51 before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, 06:57 who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, 07:01 Abraham's brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder. 07:05 And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, 07:09 neither had any man known her; 07:12 and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, 07:15 and came up. And the servant ran to meet her, and said, 07:19 "Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher. " 07:23 And she said, "Drink, my lord: " 07:26 and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, 07:30 and gave him drink. And when she had done giving him drink, 07:33 she said, "I will draw water for thy camels also, 07:36 until they have done drinking. " 07:37 And she hasted, and emptied her pitcher into the through, 07:41 and ran again unto the well to draw water, 07:44 and drew for all his camels. 07:47 And the man wondering at her held his peace, 07:51 to wit whether the Lord had made his journey prosperous or not. 07:55 And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, 07:59 that the man took a golden earring of half a shekel weight, 08:02 and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold; 08:07 And said, "Whose daughter art thou? tell me, I pray thee: 08:11 is there room in thy father's house for us to lodge in? " 08:15 And she said unto him, "I am the daughter of Bethuel 08:19 the son of Milcah, which she bare unto Nahor. " 08:22 She said moreover unto him, "We have both straw and 08:27 provender enough, and room to lodge in. " 08:29 And the man bowed down his head, and worshiped the Lord. 08:33 And he said, "Blessed be the Lord God of my master Abraham, 08:36 who hath not left destitute my master of His mercy 08:40 and His truth: I being in the way, the Lord led me to the 08:44 house of my master's brethren. " 08:47 And the damsel ran, and told them of her mother's house 08:50 these things. And Rebekah had a brother, 08:52 and his name was Laban: and Laban ran out unto the man, 08:56 unto the well. And it came to pass, when he saw the earring 09:00 and the bracelets upon his sister's hands, 09:02 and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, 09:06 "Thus spake the man unto me; " 09:07 that he came unto the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels 09:11 at the well. And he said, "Come in, thou blessed of the 09:14 Lord: wherefore standest thou without? 09:17 for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels. " 09:21 And the man came into the house: and he ungirded his camels, 09:25 and gave straw and provender for the camels, 09:28 and water to wash his feet, 09:30 and the men's feet that were with him. 09:33 And there was set meat before him to eat: but he said, 09:36 "I will not eat, until I have told mine errand. " 09:38 And he said, "Speak on. " 09:40 And he said, "I am Abraham's servant. And the Lord hath 09:44 blessed my master greatly; and he is become great: 09:47 and He hath given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, 09:50 and menservants, and maid- servants, and camels, and asses. 09:53 And Sarah my master's wife bare a son to my master 09:57 when she was old: and unto him hath he given all that he hath. 10:01 And my master made me swear, saying, Thou shalt not take 10:05 a wife to my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, 10:07 in whose land I dwell: But thou shalt go unto my father's house, 10:11 and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son. " 10:15 And I said unto my master, 10:17 "Peradventure the woman will not follow me. " 10:20 And he said unto me, "The Lord, before whom I walk, 10:24 will send His angel with thee, and prosper thy way; 10:29 and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my kindred, 10:32 and of my father's house: Then shalt thou be clear 10:36 from this my oath, when thou comest to my kindred; 10:38 and if they give not thee one, 10:40 thou shalt be clear from my oath. " 10:42 And I came this day unto the well, and said, 10:45 "O Lord God of my master Abraham, if now Thou do prosper 10:49 my way which I go: Behold, I stand by the well 10:52 of water; and it shall come to pass, 10:54 that when the virgin cometh forth to draw water, 10:57 and I say to her, 'Give me, I pray thee, a little water 11:00 of thy pitcher to drink; ' And she say to me, 11:03 'Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels; ' 11:06 let the same be the woman whom the Lord hath appointed 11:09 out for my master's son. " 11:12 And before I had done speaking in mine heart, behold, 11:18 Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; 11:20 and she went down unto the well, and drew water: 11:23 and I said unto her, 'Let me drink, I pray thee. ' 11:26 And she made haste, and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, 11:29 and said, 'Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: ' 11:32 so I drank; and she made the camels drink also. 11:35 And I asked her, and said, 'Whose daughter art thou? ' 11:38 And she said, 'The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, 11:42 whom Milcah bare unto him: ' and I put the earring upon her 11:45 face, and the bracelets upon her hands. 11:47 And I bowed down my head, and worshiped the Lord, 11:50 and blessed the Lord God of my master Abraham, 11:53 which hath led me in the right way to take my master's 11:56 brother's daughter unto his son. 11:59 And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, 12:04 tell me: and if not, tell me; 12:06 that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left. " 12:09 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, 12:13 "The thing proceedeth from the Lord: we cannot speak unto thee 12:16 bad or good. Behold, Rebekah is before thee, 12:20 take her, and go, and let her be thy master's son's wife, 12:24 as the Lord hath spoken. " 12:26 And it came to pass, that, when Abraham's servant heard 12:29 their words, he worshiped the Lord, 12:32 bowing himself to the earth. 12:33 And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, 12:36 and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: 12:40 he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things. 12:44 And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were 12:47 with him, and tarried all night; and they rose up in the morning, 12:51 and he said, "Send me away unto my master. " 12:53 And her brother and her mother said, "Let the damsel abide 12:57 with us a few days, at the least ten; 13:00 after that she shall go. " 13:02 And he said unto them, "Hinder me not, 13:05 seeing the Lord hath prospered my way; 13:08 send me away that I may go to my master. " 13:12 And they said, "We will call the damsel, and inquire 13:14 at her mouth. " And they called Rebekah, 13:17 and said unto her, "Wilt thou go with this man? " 13:20 And she said, "I will go. " 13:22 And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, 13:26 and Abraham's servant, and his men. 13:28 And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, 13:31 "Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands 13:35 of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those 13:39 which hate them. " And Rebekah arose, 13:42 and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, 13:45 and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, 13:48 and went his way. 13:50 And Isaac came from the way 13:52 of the well Lahairoi; for he 13:54 dwelt in the south country. 13:55 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: 13:59 and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, 14:02 and behold, the camels were coming. 14:04 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, 14:06 and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel. 14:10 For she had said unto the servant, "What man is this 14:13 that walketh in the field to meet us? " 14:15 And the servant had said, "It is my master: " 14:17 therefore she took a veil, and covered herself. 14:21 And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done. 14:25 And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, 14:28 and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; 14:31 and he loved her; 14:32 and Isaac was comforted after his mother's death. |
