00:16 Hi and welcome back to His Words Are Life.
00:19 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and before
00:21 we read today let's pray together.
00:22 Dear Jesus, thank you so much for this opportunity to...
00:27 to step out of our daily lives and to sit quietly with Your
00:32 Word for a few minutes
00:33 and to listen to You speak to us and to be refreshed.
00:37 Please send Your Holy Spirit now to guide our minds,
00:40 guide our thoughts, so that we may understand
00:43 and then put these words into action to Your glory.
00:46 We love You; thank you for loving us. Amen.
00:50 We are reading today in the book of Genesis.
00:53 And when we were last together we were reading the account of
00:56 the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.
00:58 And how the visitors from God had taken Lot and his wife
01:03 and his two daughters and urged them to flee from the cities
01:07 and not to look back.
01:09 And then God rained fire and brimstone out of heaven
01:11 onto Sodom and Gomorrah.
01:13 Picking up the story in Genesis 19 verse 25.
01:17 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain,
01:21 and all the inhabitants of the cities,
01:23 and that which grew upon the ground.
01:25 But his wife looked back from behind him,
01:28 and she became a pillar of salt.
01:31 And Abraham got up early in the morning to the place where he
01:34 stood before the Lord: And he looked toward Sodom
01:36 and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain,
01:38 and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up
01:42 as the smoke of a furnace.
01:44 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the
01:47 plain, that God remembered Abraham,
01:49 and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow,
01:52 when He overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.
01:56 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain,
01:59 and his two daughters with him;
02:01 for he feared to dwell in Zoar:
02:03 and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.
02:06 And the first-born said unto the younger,
02:08 Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth
02:11 to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth:
02:14 Come, let us make our father drink wine,
02:17 and we will lie with him,
02:18 that we may preserve seed of our father.
02:21 And they made their father drink wine that night:
02:24 and the first-born went in, and lay with her father;
02:26 and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
02:31 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the first-born said
02:34 unto the younger, "Behold, I lay yesternight with my father:
02:38 let us make him drink wine this night also;
02:41 and go thou in, and lie with him,
02:43 that we may preserve seed of our father.
02:46 And they made their father drink wine that night also:
02:49 and the younger arose, and lay with him;
02:51 and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
02:55 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.
03:01 And the first-born bare a son, and called his name Moab:
03:04 the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day.
03:08 And the younger, she also bare a son,
03:11 and called his name Benammi: the same is the father
03:14 of the children of Ammon unto this day.
03:17 We are continuing now in the book of Genesis in chapter 20.
03:21 And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the south country,
03:25 and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourned in Gerar.
03:30 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, "She is my sister: "
03:34 and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah.
03:38 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night,
03:41 and said to him, "Behold, thou art but a dead man,
03:44 for the woman which thou hast taken;
03:46 for she is a man's wife. "
03:49 But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said,
03:52 "Lord, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation?
03:55 Said he not unto me, 'She is my sister? '
03:58 and she, even she herself said, 'He is my brother: '
04:01 in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands
04:05 have I done this. "
04:07 And God said unto him in a dream,
04:09 "Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy
04:12 heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against Me:
04:15 therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.
04:18 Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet,
04:22 and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live:
04:24 and if thou restore her not,
04:25 know thou that thou shalt surely die,
04:28 thou, and all that are thine. "
04:31 Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morning,
04:33 and called all his servants, and told all these things
04:36 in their ears: and the men were sore afraid.
04:38 Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him,
04:40 "What hast thou done unto us? and what have I offended thee,
04:45 that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin?
04:49 thou has done deeds unto me that ought not to be done. "
04:52 And Abimelech said unto Abraham,
04:54 "What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing? "
04:58 And Abraham said, "Because I thought, Surely the fear of God
05:02 is not in this place; and they will slay me
05:04 for my wife's sake. And yet indeed she IS my sister;
05:08 she is the daughter of my father,
05:10 but not the daughter of my mother;
05:12 and she became my wife. "
05:13 And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander
05:17 from my father's house, that I said unto her,
05:19 "This is thy kindness which thou shalt show unto me;
05:22 at every place whither we shall come, say of me,
05:26 He is my brother. "
05:27 And Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and menservants,
05:31 and womenservants, and gave them unto Abraham,
05:33 and restored him Sarah his wife.
05:35 And Abimelech said: "Behold, my land is before thee:
05:39 dwell where it pleaseth thee. "
05:41 And unto Sarah he said, "Behold, I have given thy
05:44 brother a thousand pieces of silver:
05:46 behold he is to thee a covering of the eyes,
05:50 unto all that are with thee, and with all other: "
05:53 thus she was reproved.
05:56 So Abraham prayed unto God: and Gold healed Abimelech,
05:59 and his wife, and his maidservants,
06:01 and they bare children.
06:03 For the Lord had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of
06:07 Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham's wife.
06:10 Continuing in chapter 21.
06:13 And the Lord visited Sarah as He had said,
06:16 and the Lord did unto Sarah as He had spoken.
06:19 For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age,
06:24 at the set time of which God had spoken to him.
06:28 And Abraham called the name of his son that was born
06:32 unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac.
06:35 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac being eight days old,
06:39 as God had commanded him.
06:41 And Abraham was a hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born
06:45 unto him. And Sarah said, "God hath made me to laugh,
06:50 so that all that hear
06:52 will laugh with me. "
06:53 And she said, "Who would have said unto Abraham that Sarah
06:56 should have given children suck?
06:58 for I have born him a son in his old age. "
07:00 And the child grew, and was weaned:
07:03 and Abraham made a great feast
07:05 the same day that Isaac was weaned.
07:07 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar, the Egyptian,
07:11 which she had born unto Abraham, mocking.
07:14 Wherefore she said unto Abraham,
07:16 "Cast out this bondwoman and her son:
07:18 for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son,
07:22 even with Isaac. "
07:23 And the thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight
07:26 because of his son.
07:28 And God said unto Abraham,
07:30 "Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad,
07:33 and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said
07:37 unto thee, hearken unto her voice;
07:39 for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.
07:42 And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation,
07:45 because he is thy seed. "
07:47 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread,
07:50 and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar,
07:52 putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away:
07:57 and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.
08:01 And the water was spent in the bottle,
08:03 and she cast the child under one of the shrubs.
08:05 And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off,
08:09 as it were a bowshot: for she said,
08:12 "Let me not see the death of the child. "
08:14 And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept.
08:18 And God heard the voice of the lad;
08:20 and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven,
08:23 and said unto her, "What aileth thee, Hagar?
08:26 fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is.
08:31 Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand;
08:35 for I will make him a great nation. "
08:38 And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water;
08:42 and she went, and filled the bottle with water,
08:45 and gave the lad drink. And God was with the lad;
08:48 and he grew, and dwelt in the wilderness,
08:51 and became an archer.
08:53 And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran:
08:56 and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt.
08:59 And it came to pass at that time that Abimelech and Phichol
09:04 the chief captain of his host spake unto Abraham, saying,
09:07 "God is with thee in all that thou doest:
09:11 Now therefore swear unto me here by God that thou wilt not
09:15 deal falsely with me, nor with my son,
09:18 nor with my son's son: but according to the kindness
09:22 that I have done unto thee, thou shalt do unto me,
09:24 and to the land wherein thou hast sojourned. "
09:28 And Abraham said, "I will swear. "
09:31 And Abraham reproved Abimelech because of a well of water,
09:35 which Abimelech's servants had violently taken away.
09:38 And Abimelech said, "I wot not who hath done this thing:
09:42 neither didst thou tell me, neither yet heard I of it,
09:44 but today. " And Abraham took sheep and oxen,
09:48 and gave them unto Abimelech;
09:50 and both of them made a covenant.
09:51 And Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves.
09:55 And Abimelech said unto Abraham,
09:58 "What mean these seven ewe lambs
10:00 which thou hast set by themselves? "
10:02 And he said, "For these seven ewe lambs shalt thou take
10:05 of my hand, that they may be a witness unto me,
10:08 that I have digged this well. "
10:10 Wherefore he called that place Beersheba:
10:13 because there they sware both of them.
10:15 Thus they made a covenant at Beersheba:
10:18 and Abimelech rose up, and Phichol the chief captain
10:21 of his host, and they returned
10:22 into the land of the Philistines.
10:24 And Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba,
10:26 and called there on the name of the Lord, the everlasting God.
10:30 And Abraham sojourned in the Philistines land many days.
10:34 We are continuing to read in
10:36 Genesis; this is chapter 22.
10:38 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt
10:42 Abraham, and said unto him,
10:44 "Abraham: " and he said, "Behold, here I am. "
10:48 And He said, "Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac,
10:54 whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah;
10:57 and offer him there for a burnt offering
10:59 upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. "
11:02 And Abraham rose up early in the morning,
11:05 and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him,
11:08 and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering,
11:12 and rose up, and went unto the place
11:14 of which God had told him.
11:16 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes,
11:19 and saw the place afar off.
11:21 And Abraham said unto his young men,
11:23 "Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder
11:27 and worship, and come again to you. "
11:30 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering,
11:33 and laid it upon Isaac his son;
11:34 and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife;
11:37 and they went both of them together.
11:40 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said,
11:43 "My father: " and he said,
11:46 "Here am I, my son. "
11:48 And he said, "Behold the fire and the wood:
11:52 but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? "
11:54 And Abraham said, "My son, God will provide
11:59 Himself a lamb for a burnt offering: "
12:01 so they went both of them together.
12:04 And they came to the place which God had told him of:
12:07 and Abraham built and altar there, and laid the wood
12:09 in order, and bound Isaac his son,
12:12 and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
12:15 And Abraham stretched forth his hand,
12:18 and took the knife to slay his son.
12:20 And the angel of the Lord called unto him out of heaven,
12:24 and said, "Abraham, Abraham; "
12:25 and he said, "Here am I. "
12:27 And He said, "Lay not thine hand upon the lad,
12:30 neither do thou any thing unto him:
12:33 for now I know that thou fearest God,
12:36 seeing thou has not withheld thy son,
12:39 thine only son from Me. "
12:41 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked,
12:44 and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket
12:48 by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram,
12:51 and offered him up for a burnt offering
12:53 in the stead of his son.
12:55 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-Jireh:
12:59 as it is said to this day,
13:01 In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen.
13:04 And the angel of the Lord called unto Abraham
13:07 out of heaven the second time.
13:08 And said, "By Myself have I sworn, saith the Lord,
13:13 for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld
13:17 thy son, thine only son;
13:18 That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying
13:23 I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven,
13:27 and as the sand which is upon the sea shore;
13:29 and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
13:34 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;
13:38 because thou hast obeyed My voice. "
13:41 So Abraham returned unto his young men,
13:44 and they rose up and went together to Beersheba;
13:47 and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.
13:50 And it came to pass after these things,
13:53 that it was told Abraham, saying,
13:55 "Behold, Milcah, she hath also born children unto thy brother
13:58 Nahor; Huz his first-born, and Buz his brother,
14:02 and Kemuel the father of Aram,
14:05 And Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph,
14:08 and Bethuel. And Bethuel begat Rebekah:
14:10 these eight Milcah did bear to Nahor, Abraham's brother.
14:15 And his concubine, whose name was Reumah,
14:18 she bare also Tebah, and Gaham, and Thahash, and Maachah.
14:23 When we are together again we'll start with chapter 23.
14:26 Thank you for joining with me and God bless you.
