00:15 Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life.
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer. We'll be reading today from I Corinthians
00:21 before we start, Let's pray together.
00:23 Dear Jesus, thank you so much that you have placed
00:27 in our hearts a desire to come close to you
00:31 to be in your presence, to walk with you in the paths of life
00:34 Please be to us a shepherd, teaching us your ways,
00:39 cleansing us from unrighteousness,
00:41 and leading us home to be with you. We hope that will be very
00:45 soon. But while we are here, help us to know more about you
00:49 all the time growing closer. Bless now as we read.
00:53 May we understand what we're reading by the power
00:55 of the Holy Spirit. We love you so much. Amen.
00:59 We're reading from the King James Version
01:01 in I Corinthians, chapter 7 beginning with verse 18.
01:05 Is any man called being circumcised? let him not
01:11 become uncircumcised? Is any called in uncircumcision?
01:15 Let him not be circumcised. Circumcision is nothing,
01:19 and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the
01:23 commandments of God. Let every man abide in the same calling
01:27 wherein he was called. Art thou called being a servant?
01:31 care not for it: but if thou mayest be made free,
01:35 use it rather. For he that is called in the Lord,
01:39 being a servant, is the Lord's freeman: likewise also
01:44 he that is called, being free, is Christ's servant.
01:48 Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men.
01:54 Brethren, let every man, wherein he is called,
01:57 therein abide with God. Now concerning virgins, I have no
02:03 commandment of the Lord: yet I give my judgment, as one that
02:07 hath obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful.
02:09 I suppose therefore that this is good for the present distress,
02:14 I say that it is good for a man so to be.
02:16 Art thou bound unto a wife? seek not to be loosed.
02:21 Art thou loosed from a wife? seek not a wife.
02:24 Seek not a wife. But and if thou marry, thou hast not sinned;
02:29 And if a virgin marry, she hath not sinned. Nevertheless
02:34 such shall have trouble in the flesh: but I spare you.
02:38 But this I say, brethren, the time is short: It remaineth,
02:41 that both they that have wives be as though they had none;
02:45 And they that weep, as though they wept not;
02:48 and they that rejoice as though they rejoiced not;
02:52 they that buy, as though they possessed not;
02:54 And they that use this world, as not abusing it:
02:58 for the fashion of this world passeth away. But I would have
03:02 you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the
03:06 things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord:
03:09 But he that is married careth for the things that are of the
03:13 world, how ye may please his wife.
03:16 There is difference also between a wife and a virgin.
03:19 The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she
03:23 may be holy both in body and in spirit:
03:26 But she that is married careth for the things of the world,
03:29 how she may please her husband. And this I speak for your own
03:34 profit; not that I may cast a snare upon you, but for that
03:39 which is comely, and that ye may attend upon the lord
03:42 without distraction. But if any man think that he behaveth
03:46 himself uncomely toward his virgin, if she pass the flower
03:50 of her age, and need so require, let him do what he will
03:54 he sinneth not: let them marry. Nevertheless he that standeth
03:59 steadfast in his heart, having no necessity, but hath power
04:03 over his own will and has so decreed in his heart that he
04:07 will keep his virgin, doeth well So then he that giveth her in
04:12 marriage doeth well; but he that giveth her not in marriage
04:16 doeth better. The wife is bound by the law as long
04:20 as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead,
04:23 she is at liberty to be married to whom she will;
04:26 only in the Lord. But she is happier if she so abide,
04:31 after my judgment: and I think also that I have the Spirit
04:35 of God. - Reading from I Corinthians
04:39 beginning in chapter 8 and this is the King James version.
04:42 Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all
04:48 have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth
04:54 and if any man think that he knoweth any thing,
04:57 he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.
05:00 But if any man love God, the same is known of him.
05:03 As concerning therefore the eating of those things
05:07 that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol
05:11 is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God
05:14 but one. For though there be that are called gods,
05:18 whether in heaven or in earth, - as there be gods many,
05:21 and Lords many, - But to us there is but one God,
05:25 the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him:
05:30 and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things,
05:34 and we by him. Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge:
05:39 for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it
05:45 as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak
05:49 is defiled. But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if
05:55 we eat are we the better; neither, if we eat not,
05:58 are we the worse. But take heed lest by any means this liberty
06:02 of yours become a stumbling block to them that are weak.
06:05 For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat
06:10 in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is
06:14 weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered
06:17 to idols; and through thy knowledge shall the weak
06:21 brother perish, for whom Christ died? But when ye sin so against
06:26 the brethren, and wound their weak conscience,
06:28 ye sin against Christ. Wherefore if meat make my brother
06:33 to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth,
06:37 lest I make my brother to offend.
06:40 Reading I Corinthians, chapter 9 this is the King James version.
06:45 Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus
06:52 Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord?
06:55 If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless
06:59 I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye
07:03 in the Lord. Mine answer to them that do examine me is this
07:07 Have we not power to eat and to drink? Have we not power to lead
07:12 about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the
07:17 brethren of the Lord, and Cephas? or I only and Barnabas,
07:21 have not we power to forbear working? Who goeth a warfare
07:26 any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard,
07:29 and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock,
07:32 and eateth not of the milk of the flock? Say I these things
07:36 as a man? or saith not the law the same also?
07:40 For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle
07:44 the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn.
07:47 Doth God take care for the oxen? Or saith he it altogether
07:52 for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written:
07:57 that he that ploweth should plow in hope;
08:00 and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker
08:04 of this hope. If we have sown unto you spiritual things,
08:07 is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?
08:11 If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we
08:17 rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power;
08:20 but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel
08:24 of Christ. Do ye not know that they which minister about holy
08:29 things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait
08:33 at the altar are partakers with the altar? Even so hath the Lord
08:39 ordained that they which preach the gospel should live
08:42 of the gospel. But I have used none of these things: neither
08:47 have I written these things, that it should be so done
08:50 unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man
08:54 should make my glorying void. For though I preach the gospel,
08:59 I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me;
09:03 yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel! For if I do this
09:09 thing willingly I have a reward: but if against my will,
09:13 a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me.
09:16 What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel
09:21 I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not
09:26 my power in the gospel. For though I be free from all men,
09:31 Yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain
09:36 the more. And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might
09:40 gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law,
09:45 that I might gain them that are under the law; To them that are
09:49 without the law, as without law - being not without law to God,
09:54 but under the law to Christ, - that I might gain them that are
09:58 without law. To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain
10:04 the weak: I am made all things all men,
10:07 that I might by all means save some. And this I do
10:12 for the gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof
10:14 with you. Know ye not that they which run in a race run all,
10:20 but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.
10:26 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate
10:30 in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown;
10:34 but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run,
10:40 not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air.
10:46 But I keep under my body, and bring it unto subjection;
10:51 lest that by any means, when I have preached to others,
10:54 I myself should be a castaway. We're reading the letter of Paul
11:00 I Corinthians, chapter ten and this is the King James version.
11:03 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant,
11:08 how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed
11:12 through the sea; and were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud
11:15 and in the sea; And did all eat the same spiritual meat;
11:18 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank
11:21 of that spiritual Rock that followed them:
11:24 and that Rock was Christ, But with many of them God was not
11:29 well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
11:32 Now these things were our examples, to the intent
11:37 that we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted
11:41 neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written,
11:46 The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
11:50 Neither let us commit fornication,
11:53 as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and 20.000
11:57 Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted,
12:01 and were destroyed of serpents. Neither murmur ye,
12:05 as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed
12:09 of the destroyer. Now all these things happened unto them
12:13 for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition,
12:17 upon whom the ends of the world are come.
12:19 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed
12:25 lest he fall. There hath no temptation taken you
12:29 but such as is common to man: but God is faithful,
12:33 who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able;
12:38 but will with the temptation also make a way to escape,
12:43 that ye may be able to bear it. Wherefore, my dearly beloved,
12:48 flee from idolatry. I speak as to wise men;
12:53 judge ye what I say. The cup of blessing which we bless,
12:57 Is it not the communion of the blood of Christ?
13:00 The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body
13:05 of Christ? For we being many are one bread, and one body:
13:09 for we are all partakers of that one bread.
13:12 Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat
13:16 of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? What say I then?
13:21 that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered
13:24 in sacrifice to idols is any thing? But I say that the things
13:28 which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils,
13:31 and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship
13:36 with devils. Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord,
13:38 and the cup of devils: Ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table
13:42 and of the table of devils. Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy?
13:46 Are we stronger than he? All things are lawful for me,
13:51 but all things are not expedient:
13:53 all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
13:57 Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.
14:03 Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat,
14:07 asking no question for conscience sake:
14:09 For the earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof.
14:13 If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast,
14:17 and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you,
14:20 eat, asking no questions for conscience sake.
14:23 But if any man say unto you, this is offered in sacrifice
14:27 unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it,
14:30 and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's
14:34 and the fullness thereof:
