00:16 Hi and welcome back to His Words Are Life.
00:19 I'm Kelly Mowrer.
00:20 Before we begin to read today from the book of Acts,
00:24 let's pray together.
00:25 Dear Jesus, thank You for sending us Your Word
00:29 to be a light to our feet and to guide us as we make our way
00:34 through our days, and hopefully, serve you better each day.
00:39 Thank You for the testimony of the life of your servant Paul,
00:43 and may we be able to say, like Paul, that we belong to You,
00:48 and we serve You with all our hearts.
00:49 We love You, Jesus.
00:51 Amen.
00:52 Again, I'm reading today from the book of Acts.
00:55 It's the King James Version.
00:56 And when we left off last time Paul is sailing with a group
01:01 of men, and they're caught in a storm.
01:03 But God has revealed to Paul that everyone on the ship
01:06 will be safe, but the ship itself will be lost.
01:09 The men take heart at this, and they eat, and they lighten
01:12 the ship; throwing the rest of the wheat overboard.
01:14 We're picking up now in verse 39.
01:17 And when it was day, they knew not the land:
01:21 but they discovered a certain creek with a shore,
01:24 into the which they were minded, if it were possible,
01:27 to thrust in the ship.
01:28 And when they had taken up the anchors, they committed
01:32 themselves unto the sea, and loosed the rudder bands,
01:35 and hoisted up the mainsail to the wind,
01:37 and made toward shore.
01:38 And falling into a place where two seas met,
01:42 they ran the ship aground; and the forepart stuck fast,
01:46 and remained unmoveable, but the hinder part was broken
01:51 with the violence of the waves.
01:53 And the soldiers' counsel was to kill the prisoners,
01:56 lest any of them should swim out, and escape.
01:58 But the centurion, willing to save Paul,
02:02 kept them from their purpose; and commanded that they which
02:06 could swim should cast themselves first into the sea,
02:09 and get to land: and the rest, some on boards,
02:13 and some on broken pieces of the ship.
02:16 And so it came to pass, that they escaped
02:19 all safe to land.
02:21 Reading now from the book of Acts in the King James Version,
02:24 chapter 28.
02:26 And when they were escaped, then they knew that the island
02:30 was called Melita.
02:32 And the barbarous people showed us no little kindness:
02:36 for they kindled a fire, and received us every one,
02:39 because of the present rain, and because of the cold.
02:43 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks,
02:46 and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat,
02:50 and fastened on his hand.
02:52 And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand,
02:57 they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer,
03:01 whom, thou he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth
03:06 not to live.
03:07 And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm.
03:11 Howbeit they looked when he should have swollen,
03:15 or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked
03:18 a great while, and saw no harm come to him,
03:21 they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.
03:24 In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man
03:28 of the island, whose name was Publius; who received us,
03:32 and lodged us three days courteously.
03:34 And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick
03:38 of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in,
03:42 and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him.
03:46 So when this was done, others also, which had diseases
03:51 in the island, came, and were healed: who also honored us
03:55 with many honors; and when we departed, they laded us with
03:59 such things as were necessary.
04:01 And after three months we departed in a ship
04:04 of Alexandria, which had wintered in the isle,
04:07 whose sign was Castor and Pollux.
04:10 And landing at Syracuse, we tarried there three days.
04:14 And from thence we fetched a compass, and came to Rhegium:
04:18 and after one day the south wind blew, and we came
04:21 the next day to Puteoli: where we found brethren,
04:25 and were desired to tarry with them seven days:
04:28 and so we went toward Rome.
04:30 And from thence, when the brethren heard of us,
04:34 they came to meet us as far as Appii forum,
04:37 and the three taverns; whom when Paul saw,
04:41 he thanked God, and took courage.
04:43 And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered
04:47 the prisoners to the captain of the guard:
04:49 but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a soldier
04:53 that kept him.
04:54 And it came to pass, that after three days
04:57 Paul called the chief of the Jews together:
04:59 and when they were come together, he said unto them,
05:02 Men and brethren, though I have committed nothing against
05:06 the people, or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered
05:11 prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.
05:14 Who, when they had examined me, would have let me go,
05:18 because there was no cause of death in me.
05:21 But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal
05:26 unto Caesar; not that I had aught to accuse my nation of.
05:30 For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see you,
05:34 and to speak with you: because that for the hope of Israel
05:38 I am bound with this chain.
05:41 And they said unto him, We neither received letters out of
05:45 Judea concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came
05:48 showed or spake any harm of thee.
05:51 But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest:
05:54 for as concerning this sect, we know that everywhere
05:58 it is spoken against.
06:00 And when they had appointed him a day, there came many
06:03 to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified
06:08 the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus,
06:12 both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets,
06:16 from morning till evening.
06:18 And some believed the things which were spoken,
06:21 and some believed not.
06:24 And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed,
06:28 after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost
06:33 by Isaiah the prophet unto our fathers, saying,
06:36 Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear,
06:40 and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see,
06:44 and not perceive: for the heart of this people is waxed gross,
06:49 and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have
06:53 they closed; lest they should see with their eyes,
06:57 and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart,
07:00 and should be converted, and I should heal them.
07:04 Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God
07:08 is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it.
07:12 And when he had said these words, the Jews departed,
07:16 and had great reasoning among themselves.
07:18 And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house,
07:23 and received all that came in unto him, preaching the kingdom
07:27 of God, and teaching those things which concern
07:30 the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence,
07:33 no man forbidding him.
07:37 We're reading today from the King James Version,
07:40 and we just completed the book of Acts, and we're now beginning
07:43 the book of Romans, chapter 1.
07:44 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle,
07:49 separated unto the gospel of God, (which he had promised
07:54 afore by his prophets in the holy Scriptures,)
07:56 concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the
08:01 seed of David according to the flesh; and declared to be
08:04 the Son of God with power, according to the Spirit of
08:07 holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:
08:11 by whom we have received grace and apostleship,
08:14 for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:
08:19 among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ:
08:23 to all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints:
08:28 Grace to you and peace from God our Father,
08:32 and the Lord Jesus Christ.
08:33 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all,
08:38 that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.
08:42 For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit
08:45 in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention
08:49 of you always in my prayers; making request,
08:52 if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey
08:58 by the will of God to come unto you.
08:59 For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you
09:03 some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established;
09:07 that is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual
09:12 faith both of you and me.
09:14 Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren,
09:17 that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you,
09:20 that I might have some fruit among
09:24 you also, even as among other Gentiles.
09:27 I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians;
09:31 both to the wise, and to the unwise.
09:34 So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel
09:39 to you that are at Rome also.
09:41 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ:
09:44 for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that
09:48 believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
09:53 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith
09:58 to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
10:03 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all
10:07 ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth
10:11 in unrighteousness; because that which may be known of God
10:15 is manifest in them; for God hath showed it unto them.
10:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world
10:24 are clearly seen, being understood by the things
10:27 that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead;
10:31 so that they are without excuse: because that, when they knew
10:36 God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful;
10:41 but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish
10:46 heart was darkened.
10:47 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
10:52 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image
10:57 made like to corruptible man, and to birds,
11:00 and four-footed beasts, and creeping things.
11:04 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness,
11:07 through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own
11:11 bodies between themselves: who changed the truth of God
11:17 into a lie, and worshiped and served the creature more than
11:23 the Creator, who is blessed for ever.
11:26 Amen.
11:27 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections:
11:31 for even their women did change the natural use into that
11:36 which is against nature: and likewise also the men,
11:40 leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust
11:43 one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly,
11:47 and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error
11:51 which was meet.
11:52 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge,
11:56 God gave them over to a reprobate mind,
11:59 to do those things which are not convenient;
12:03 being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication,
12:06 wickedness, covetousness maliciousness; full of envy,
12:11 murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
12:16 backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters,
12:23 inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
12:28 without understanding, covenant breakers,
12:31 without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
12:35 who, knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such
12:39 things are worthy of death, not only do the same,
12:42 but have pleasure in them that do them.
12:45 We're reading from the King James Version
12:48 the book of Romans, chapter 2.
12:51 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art
12:56 that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another,
13:00 thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest
13:03 the same things.
13:05 But we are sure that the judgment of God is according
13:08 to truth against them which commit such things.
13:12 And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such
13:16 things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape
13:20 the judgment of God?
13:21 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance
13:25 and long-suffering; not knowing that the goodness of God
13:30 leadeth thee to repentance?
13:32 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up
13:37 unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation
13:41 of the righteous judgment of God; who will render
13:44 to every man according to his deeds: to them who by patient
13:49 continuance in well-doing seek for glory and honor
13:54 and immortality, eternal life: but unto them that are
13:58 contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness,
14:03 indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish,
14:06 upon every soul of man that doeth evil; of the Jew first,
14:11 and also of the Gentile; but glory, honor, and peace,
14:15 to every man that worketh good; to the Jew first,
14:19 and also to the Gentile: for there is no respect
14:23 of persons with God.
14:24 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish
14:28 without law; and as many as have sinned in the law
14:32 shall be judged by the law;
