00:15 Hi, and welcome back to His Words Are Life.
00:18 I'm Kelly Mowrer.
00:19 We'll be reading today from the King James version in the book
00:22 of Acts, but before we begin lets pray together.
00:25 Dear Jesus, thank you so much for the opportunity to
00:31 come apart from the things that fill our days, and to come into
00:37 Your presence, and to read Your words.
00:39 Please send the Holy Spirit now to guide our minds and to give
00:43 us a deeper understanding of the truth and the life that Your
00:47 word has for each one of us.
00:49 We love you.
00:50 Thank you.
00:51 Amen.
00:53 We are reading again from the book of Acts.
00:56 And when we were last together we were reading how the church
00:58 in Jerusalem sent a letter to the new believers, the Gentiles
01:02 in Antioch.
01:03 And they sent their two prophets, Judas and Silas.
01:06 We'll pick up now in Chapter 15, verse 34.
01:11 Notwithstanding it pleased Silas to abide there still.
01:15 Paul also and Barnabas continued in Antioch, teaching and
01:20 preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.
01:22 And some days after, Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again
01:27 and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the
01:31 word of the Lord, and see how they do.
01:33 And Barnabas determined to take him with them John,
01:36 whose surname was Mark.
01:38 But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed
01:43 from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work.
01:46 And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed
01:52 asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark,
01:56 and sailed unto Cyprus; and Paul chose Silas, and departed,
02:00 being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God.
02:04 And he went through Syria and Cilicia,
02:06 confirming the churches.
02:08 We're reading from the book of Acts, the King James Version,
02:11 Chapter 16.
02:13 Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and, behold, a certain
02:19 disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain
02:23 woman which was a Jewest, and believed that his father was a
02:26 Greek: which was well reported of by the brethren that were at
02:30 Lystra and Iconium.
02:31 Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and
02:35 circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those
02:38 quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek.
02:42 And as they went through the cities, they delivered them
02:45 the decrees for to keep, that were ordained of the apostles
02:49 and elders which were at Jerusalem.
02:50 And so were the churches established in the faith,
02:54 and increased in number daily.
02:56 Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the
03:00 region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to
03:03 preach the word in Asia, after they were come to Mysia,
03:07 they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit
03:10 suffered them not.
03:12 And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas.
03:16 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of
03:21 Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into
03:24 Macedonia, and help us.
03:26 And after he had seen the vision, immediately we
03:30 endeavored to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that
03:34 the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them.
03:37 Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to
03:43 Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis; and from thence to
03:48 Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia,
03:52 and a colony: and we were in that city abiding certain days.
03:56 And on the Sabbath we went out of the city by a river side,
04:01 where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down,
04:04 and spake unto the women which resorted thither.
04:08 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city
04:13 of Thyatira, which worshiped God, heard us: whose heart the
04:18 Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were
04:21 spoken of Paul.
04:22 And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us,
04:28 saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord,
04:31 come into my house, and abide there.
04:34 And she constrained us.
04:35 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel
04:40 possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought
04:45 her masters much gain by soothsaying: the same followed
04:49 Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of
04:54 the most high God, which show unto us the way of salvation.
04:58 And this did she many days.
05:01 But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit,
05:06 I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.
05:11 And he came out the same hour.
05:13 And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was
05:18 gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the
05:22 market place unto the rulers.
05:24 And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men,
05:28 being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city, and teach
05:32 customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to
05:36 observe, being Romans.
05:37 And the multitude rose up together against them;
05:41 and the magistrates rent off their clothes,
05:44 and commanded to beat them.
05:45 And when they had laid many stripes upon them,
05:49 they cast them into prison, charging the jailer to keep them
05:53 safely: who, having received such a charge, thrust them into
05:59 the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.
06:03 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto
06:08 God: and the prisoners heard them.
06:10 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the
06:14 foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the
06:19 doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.
06:22 And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep,
06:26 and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword,
06:30 and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners
06:33 had been fled.
06:34 But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no
06:37 harm: for we are all here.
06:40 Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling,
06:44 and fell down before Paul and Silas, and brought them out,
06:48 and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
06:51 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ,
06:54 and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
06:57 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that
07:01 were in his house.
07:02 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their
07:06 stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.
07:11 And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat
07:15 before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with
07:19 all his house.
07:20 And when it was day, the magistrates sent the sergeants,
07:24 saying, Let those men go.
07:26 And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul,
07:30 The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore depart,
07:34 and go in peace.
07:35 But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly
07:40 uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison;
07:45 and now do they thrust us out privily? nay verily;
07:50 but let them come themselves and fetch us out.
07:53 And the sergeants told these words unto the magistrates:
07:57 and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans.
08:01 And they came and besought them, and brought them out,
08:04 and desired them to depart out of the city.
08:06 And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of
08:09 Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted
08:13 them, and departed.
08:14 We're reading from the book of Acts, Chapter 17.
08:19 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia,
08:24 they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:
08:28 and Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them,
08:32 and three Sabbath days reasoned with them out of the Scriptures,
08:36 opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered,
08:40 and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus,
08:43 whom I preach unto you, is Christ.
08:46 And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas;
08:50 and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief
08:55 women not a few.
08:56 But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them
09:02 certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a
09:05 company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the
09:10 house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.
09:13 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain
09:17 brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have
09:21 turned the world upside down are come hither also; whom Jason
09:25 hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of
09:29 Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.
09:33 And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city,
09:36 when they heard these things.
09:38 And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other,
09:41 they let them go.
09:42 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by
09:47 night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue
09:52 of the Jews.
09:53 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they
09:57 received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched
10:02 the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
10:05 Therefore many of them believed; also of honorable women which
10:10 were Greeks, and of men, not a few.
10:12 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that
10:17 the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither
10:21 also, and stirred up the people.
10:23 And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as
10:28 it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.
10:33 And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens;
10:37 and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to
10:41 come to him with all speed, they departed.
10:44 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was
10:49 stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.
10:53 Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews,
10:57 and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them
11:00 that met with him.
11:02 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoics,
11:06 encountered him.
11:07 And some said, What will this babbler say? other some,
11:13 He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he
11:17 preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.
11:20 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying,
11:24 May we know what this new doctrine, whereof
11:27 thou speakest, is?
11:28 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears:
11:32 we would know therefore what these things mean.
11:35 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent
11:39 their time in nothing else, but either to tell or to hear
11:42 some new thing.)
11:43 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said,
11:48 Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye
11:52 are too superstitious.
11:54 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar
11:59 with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD.
12:03 Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.
12:09 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he
12:14 is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples
12:17 made with hands; neither is worshiped with men's hands,
12:21 as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life,
12:25 and breath, and all things; and hath made of one blood all
12:29 nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth,
12:33 and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds
12:36 of their habitation; that they should seek the Lord,
12:39 if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be
12:43 not far from every one of us: for in him we live, and move,
12:48 and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have
12:52 said, For we are also his offspring.
12:55 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not
13:00 to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver,
13:04 or stone, graven by art and man's device.
13:08 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now
13:13 commandeth all men everywhere to repent: because he hath
13:18 appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in
13:21 righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he
13:26 hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him
13:29 from the dead.
13:31 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead,
13:35 some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again
13:39 of this matter.
13:40 So Paul departed from among them.
13:42 Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the
13:47 which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named
13:51 Damaris, and others with them.
13:53 We're reading in the book of Acts, Chapter 18.
13:57 After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to
14:01 Corinth; and found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus,
14:05 lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla, (because that
14:10 Claudius had commanded
