00:16 Hi and welcome to His words are life.
00:19 Thank you for joining me today and before we start to read
00:23 let's go to God in prayer.
00:25 Dear Heavenly Father, and dear Jesus, thank you so very much
00:30 for what we are about to read today - the words and the story
00:34 of your hours leading up to your death and that death was for us.
00:40 You came so that we could be with you - we could never have
00:45 made it otherwise and we just thank you for that and we can't
00:49 tell you thank you enough but may these words somehow take
00:53 root in our lives by the power of your Holy Spirit and may we
00:57 show to the world how much we love you by the way we treat
01:01 each other and by the things we do to serve each other.
01:04 Please be with us now as we read - we love you so much.
01:07 Amen.
01:09 Again, I am reading from the Gospel of John, the King James
01:12 version - we are in chapter 18.
01:15 When we left off Jesus had gone to the garden of Gesthemane,
01:19 and there Judas and the angry mob had come to Him, seeking
01:23 Him and we will begin now in verse 8.
01:29 Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye
01:34 seek me, let these go their way.
01:37 That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, of
01:40 them which thou gavest me have I lost none.
01:45 Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high
01:48 priest's servant and cut off his right ear.
01:52 The servant's name was Malchus.
01:54 Then said Jesus unto Peter, put up thy sword into the sheath:
01:59 the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?
02:05 Then the band and the captain and the officers of the Jews
02:08 took Jesus and bound him, and led him away to Annas first,
02:11 for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high
02:13 priest that same year.
02:15 Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was
02:20 expedient that one man should die for the people.
02:24 And Simon Peter followed Jesus and so did another disciple:
02:28 that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with
02:31 Jesus into the palace of the high priest.
02:35 But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that
02:38 other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake
02:41 unto her that kept the door and brought in Peter.
02:46 Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not
02:50 thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.
02:56 And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire
02:58 of coals, for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and
03:02 Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.
03:04 The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of
03:07 his doctrine.
03:10 Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever
03:13 taught in the synogogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews
03:16 always resort, and in secret have I said nothing.
03:21 Why asketh thou me? Ask them which heard me, what I have said
03:24 unto them, behold, they know what I said.
03:31 And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by
03:35 struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou
03:39 the high priest so?
03:40 Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the
03:45 evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?
03:50 Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.
03:55 And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore
03:59 unto him, art not thou one of his disciples? He denied it and
04:05 said, I am not.
04:07 One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose
04:11 ear Peter cut off, saith did not I see thee in the garden with
04:14 him? Peter then denied again and immediately the cock crew.
04:21 Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of
04:23 judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not unto
04:26 the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they
04:30 might eat the passover.
04:32 Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring
04:35 ye against this man?
04:38 They answered and said unto him, if he were not a malefactor, we
04:41 would not have delivered him up unto thee.
04:43 Then said Pilate unto them, take he him, and judge him according
04:48 to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful
04:52 for us to put any man to death.
04:55 That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which he spake,
04:59 signifying what death he should die.
05:02 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again and called
05:04 Jesus, and said unto him, art thou the King of the Jews?
05:09 Jesus answered him, sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did
05:13 others tell it thee of me?
05:16 Pilate answered, am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief
05:20 priests have delivered thee unto me: what has thou done?
05:24 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my
05:28 kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight,
05:31 that I should not be delivered to the Jews, but now is my
05:35 kingdom not from hence.
05:39 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then?
05:43 Jesus answered, thou sayest that I am a king. To this end
05:46 was I born, and for this cause came I unto the world,
05:49 that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is
05:53 of the truth, heareth my voice.
05:56 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said
06:00 this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I
06:02 find in him no fault at all.
06:07 But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at
06:10 the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King
06:13 of the Jews?
06:15 Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but
06:18 Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.
06:23 We are reading from the Gospel of John, Chapter 19.
06:28 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus and scourged him.
06:31 And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns and put it on his head
06:35 and they put on him a purple robe, And said Hail, King of the
06:39 Jews, and they smote him with their hands.
06:43 Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them,
06:46 Behold I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find
06:49 no fault in him.
06:52 And then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns,
06:56 and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!
07:00 When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried
07:05 out saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them,
07:10 take ye him and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.
07:16 The Jews answered him, we have a law, and by our law he ought to
07:19 die because he made himself the Son of God.
07:23 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;
07:28 And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus,
07:31 Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.
07:36 Then saith Pilate unto him, speakest thou not unto me?
07:39 Knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have
07:43 power to release thee?
07:46 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me,
07:52 except it were given thee from above: therefore he that
07:55 delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.
08:01 And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the
08:03 Jews cried out saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not
08:06 Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh
08:09 against Caesar.
08:11 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth,
08:15 and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called
08:18 the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.
08:23 And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the
08:26 sixth hour, and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!
08:33 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him.
08:37 Pilate saith unto them, shall I crucify your King?
08:40 The chief priests answered we have no king but Caesar.
08:44 Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified.
08:47 And they took Jesus, and led him away.
08:52 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the
08:57 place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew, Golgotha.
09:04 Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either
09:07 side one, and Jesus in the midst.
09:10 And Pilate wrote a title, and put in on the cross.
09:13 And the writing was JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.
09:20 This title then read many of Jews for the place where Jesus
09:23 was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in
09:26 Hebrew, in Greek and Latin.
09:30 Then said the chief priest of the Jews to Pilate, Write not,
09:33 The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am the King of
09:36 the Jews.
09:39 Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written.
09:44 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his
09:48 garments and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and
09:52 also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the
09:56 top throughout.
09:58 They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it,
10:03 but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture
10:06 might be fulfilled, which saith, they parted my raiment among
10:10 them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things
10:14 therefore the soldiers did.
10:17 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his
10:20 mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
10:26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple
10:29 standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother,
10:32 Woman, behold thy son!
10:34 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother!
10:40 And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
10:44 After this Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished
10:49 that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
10:54 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled the
10:56 sponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to
10:59 his mouth.
11:01 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said,
11:04 It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
11:11 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the
11:14 bodies should not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath day,
11:17 for that Sabbath day was an high day, besought Pilate that
11:20 their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
11:25 Then came the soldiers, and break the legs of the first, and
11:28 of the other which was crucified with him.
11:31 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already
11:35 they break not his legs.
11:38 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and
11:42 forthwith came there out blood and water.
11:47 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true:
11:50 and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.
11:55 For these things were done, that the scriptures should be
11:57 fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.
12:01 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him
12:03 whom they pierced.
12:06 And after this, Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of
12:09 Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that
12:13 he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave
12:19 He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.
12:22 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus
12:27 by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a
12:30 hundred pound weight.
12:33 Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen
12:35 clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.
12:41 Now in the place where he was crucified, there was a garden;
12:45 and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man
12:48 yet laid.
12:50 There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation
12:53 day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.
12:59 We are reading from the Gospel of John, Chapter 20.
13:03 The first day of the week coming Mary Magdalene early, when it
13:07 was yet dark, unto the sepulchre and seeth the stone taken away
13:11 from the sepulchre.
13:13 Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter and to the other
13:16 disciple whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, they have taken
13:19 away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where
13:22 they have laid him.
13:24 Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came
13:27 to the sepulchre.
13:29 So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun
13:31 Peter and came first to the sepulchre.
13:37 And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen
13:39 clothes lying; yet went he not in.
13:44 Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the
13:46 sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie,
13:49 And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the
13:52 linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.
13:55 Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to
13:59 the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed.
14:03 For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise
14:05 again from the dead.
14:08 Then the disciples went away again unto their home.
14:12 But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she
14:17 wept, she stooped down to look int the sepulchre,
14:20 And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head,
14:23 and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.
14:27 Thank you for joining with me today to read these words of God
14:31 Till next time may he continue to keep you in his care.
