00:17 Hi, and welcome to His Words Are Life.
00:19 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and I'm glad you're joining with me today 00:22 to read the very word of God. 00:24 Before we turn to the gospel of Luke and begin, 00:26 let's go to God in prayer. 00:28 Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that in our time together we can 00:34 read of Your death for us, and of the resurrection and 00:39 eternal life that You have given to us, the way You have made 00:44 for us to come and be with You for eternity. 00:46 We thank You for that. 00:48 We can never fully understand it, and we don't deserve it, 00:52 but we love You because You first loved us. 00:54 Come be with us now as we read Your word. 00:56 Amen. 00:57 Again, I'm reading today from the gospel of Luke. 01:01 We'll begin in chapter 23. 01:03 This is the King James Version, and we're beginning with 01:07 verse 48. 01:08 And all the people that came together to that sight, 01:12 beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, 01:16 and returned. 01:17 And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him 01:20 from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things. 01:24 And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counselor; 01:28 and he was a good man, and a just: (The same had not 01:32 consented to the counsel and deed of them:) he was of 01:36 Arimathea, a city of the Jews; who also himself waited for the 01:41 kingdom of God. 01:42 This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. 01:46 And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a 01:50 sepulcher that was hewn in stone, wherein never man 01:53 before was laid. 01:54 And that day was the preparation, 01:57 and the Sabbath drew on. 01:59 And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed 02:03 after, and beheld the sepulcher, and how his body was laid. 02:07 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments, and rested 02:11 the Sabbath day according to the commandment. 02:14 I'm reading from the gospel of Luke and beginning with 02:17 chapter 24. 02:18 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, 02:23 they came unto the sepulcher, bringing the spices which they 02:27 had prepared, and certain others with them. 02:29 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulcher. 02:33 And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. 02:37 And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, 02:41 behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: and as they 02:47 were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, 02:49 they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? 02:54 He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you 02:59 when he was yet in Galilee, saying, The Son of man must be 03:02 delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, 03:05 and the third day rise again. 03:07 And they remembered his words. 03:09 And returned from the sepulcher, and told all these things unto 03:13 the eleven, and to all the rest. 03:15 It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother 03:19 of James, and other women that were with them, which told these 03:22 things unto the apostles. 03:24 And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed 03:28 them not. 03:29 Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulcher; and stooping 03:34 down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, 03:38 and departed, wondering in himself at that which was 03:43 come to pass. 03:44 And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village 03:48 called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about 03:50 threescore furlongs. 03:52 And they talked together of all these things which had happened. 03:55 And it came to pass, that, while they communed together 03:59 and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. 04:04 But their eyes were held that they should not know him. 04:08 And he said unto them, What manner of communications 04:12 are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, 04:16 and are sad? 04:17 And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto 04:22 him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known 04:26 the things where are come to pass there in these days? 04:28 And he said unto them, What things? 04:31 And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, 04:35 which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God 04:39 and all the people: and how the chief priests and our rulers 04:42 delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. 04:47 But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed 04:51 Israel: and beside all this, today is the third day since 04:53 these things were done. 04:54 Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, 04:59 which were early at the sepulcher; and when they found 05:02 not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision 05:06 of angels, which said that he was alive. 05:09 And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulcher, 05:13 and found it even so as the women had said: 05:15 but him they saw not. 05:17 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all 05:24 that the prophets have spoken: ought not Christ to have 05:28 suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? 05:31 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto 05:35 them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. 05:38 And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: 05:42 and he made as though he would have gone further. 05:45 But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us; for it is 05:49 toward evening, and the day is far spent. 05:51 And he went in to tarry with them. 05:54 And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread 05:59 and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. 06:03 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; 06:07 and he vanished out of their sight. 06:09 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within 06:14 us while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened 06:17 to us the Scriptures? 06:18 And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, 06:21 and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were 06:25 with them, saying, The Lord is risen indeed, 06:28 and hath appeared to Simon. 06:29 And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was 06:33 known of them in breaking of bread. 06:35 And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of 06:40 them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. 06:43 But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed 06:47 that they had seen a spirit. 06:49 And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts 06:53 arise in your hearts? 06:54 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, 07:00 and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, 07:02 as ye see me have. 07:04 And when he had thus spoken, he showed them his hands 07:08 and his feet. 07:09 And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, 07:14 he said unto them, Have ye here any meat? 07:18 And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, 07:21 and of a honeycomb. 07:22 And he took it, and did eat before them. 07:25 And he said unto them, These are the words which I 07:28 spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must 07:33 be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the 07:36 prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. 07:39 Then opened he their understanding, that they might 07:42 understand the Scriptures. 07:43 And he said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved 07:48 Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: 07:51 And that repentance and remission of sins should be 07:55 preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 07:59 And ye are witnesses of these things. 08:01 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: 08:05 but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued 08:08 with power from on high. 08:10 And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his 08:15 hands, and blessed them. 08:16 And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted 08:21 from them, and carried up into heaven. 08:23 And they worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great 08:27 joy: and were continually in the temple, praising and 08:32 blessing God. 08:33 Amen. 08:34 We continue our reading now with the gospel according to John. 08:40 We'll begin in chapter 1, and I'm reading from the 08:43 King James Version. 08:44 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, 08:49 and the Word was God. 08:51 The same was in the beginning with God. 08:54 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing 08:59 made that was made. 09:00 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 09:05 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness 09:09 comprehended it not. 09:11 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 09:15 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, 09:20 that all men through him might believe. 09:23 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness 09:27 of that Light. 09:28 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh 09:33 into the world. 09:34 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, 09:37 and the world knew him not. 09:40 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 09:45 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the 09:50 sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: which were 09:56 born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, 09:59 nor of the will of man, but of God. 10:02 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, 10:06 (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten 10:11 of the Father,) full of grace and truth. 10:14 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he 10:18 of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me; 10:22 for he was before me. 10:24 And of his fullness have all we received, and grace for grace. 10:30 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by 10:35 Jesus Christ. 10:36 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, 10:41 which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. 10:45 And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and 10:50 Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? 10:53 And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, 10:56 I am not the Christ. 10:59 And they asked him, What then? 11:01 Art thou Elias? 11:02 And he saith, I am not. 11:04 Art thou that Prophet? 11:06 And he answered, No. 11:08 Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an 11:12 answer to them that sent us. 11:14 What sayest thou of thyself? 11:15 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, 11:20 Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the 11:23 prophet Isaiah. 11:24 And they which were sent were of the Pharisees. 11:27 And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou 11:31 then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, 11:34 neither that Prophet? 11:35 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there 11:41 standeth one among you, whom ye know not; he it is, 11:45 who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet 11:49 I am not worthy to unloose. 11:51 These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, 11:55 where John was baptizing. 11:57 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, 12:02 Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin 12:06 of the world. 12:07 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is 12:11 preferred before me; for he was before me. 12:15 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to 12:19 Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. 12:24 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from 12:28 heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. 12:31 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, 12:36 the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit 12:41 descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which 12:45 baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. 12:47 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God. 12:52 Again the next day after, John stood, and two of his disciples; 12:57 and looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the 13:00 Lamb of God! 13:02 And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 13:06 Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, 13:11 What seek ye? 13:12 They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, 13:17 being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? 13:21 He saith unto them, Come and see. 13:24 They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that 13:28 day: for it was about the tenth hour. 13:30 One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, 13:34 was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. 13:37 He first findeth his own brother Simon, and said unto him, 13:41 We have found the Messiah, which is, being interpreted, 13:44 the Christ. 13:46 And he brought him to Jesus. 13:47 And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of 13:52 Jonah: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by 13:56 interpretation, A stone. 13:57 The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth 14:01 Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me. 14:04 Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 14:08 Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found 14:12 him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, 14:15 Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. 14:19 And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing 14:22 come out of Nazareth? 14:23 Philip saith unto him, Come and see. 14:26 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, 14:30 Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile! 14:35 Thank you for joining with me today. 14:38 Please join me again next time. |
